We expand our previously founded basic theory of equiresidual algebraic geometry over an arbitrary commutative field, to a well-behaved theory of (equiresidual) algebraic varieties over a commutative field, thanks to the generalisation of affine algebraic geometry by the use of canonical localisations and $*$-algebras. We work here in an equivalent and more suggestive "concrete" setting with structural sheaves of functions into the base field, which allows us to give a set-theoretic description of the products of equivarieties in general. Locally closed subvarieties are naturally equipped with an equivariety structure as in the particular case of algebraically closed fields, and this allows in particular to embed all quasi-projective (equi)varieties in general into the category of algebraic (equi)varieties.
We classify commutative algebraic monoid structures on normal affine surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The answer is given in two languages: comultiplications and Cox coordinates. The result follows from a more general classification of commutative monoid structures of rank 0, n-1 or n on a normal affine variety of dimension n.
We determine the homological dimension of various isogeny categories of commutative algebraic groups over a field $k$, in terms of the cohomological dimension of $k$ at certain primes. This generalizes results of Serre, Oort and Milne, by an alternative approach.
We review the theory of non-commutative deformations of sheaves and describe a versal deformation by using an A-infinity algebra and the change of differentials of an injective resolution. We give some explicit non-trivial examples.
We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $0$ and let $G$ and $H$ be connected commutative algebraic groups over $K$. Let $\text{Mor}_0(G,H)$ denote the set of morphisms of algebraic varieties $G \to H$ that map the neutral element to the neutral element. We construct a natural retraction from $\text{Mor}_0(G,H)$ to $\text{Hom}(G,H)$ (for arbitrary $G$ and $H$) which commutes with the composition and addition of morphisms. In particular, if $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic as algebraic varieties, then they are isomorphic as algebraic groups. If $G$ has no non-trivial unipotent group as a direct factor, w…
We define and study preorderings and orderings on rings of the form $M_n(R)$ where $R$ is a commutative unital ring. We extend the Artin-Lang theorem and Krivine-Stengle Stellensätze (both abstract and geometric) from $R$ to $M_n(R)$. While the orderings of $M_n(R)$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the orderings of $R$, this is not true for preorderings. Therefore, our theory is not Morita equivalent to the classical real algebraic geometry.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, G_m=(K\{0},*) be its multiplicative group, and G_a=(K,+) be its additive group. Consider a commutative linear algebraic group G=G_m^r\times G_a. We study equivariant G-embeddings, i.e. normal G-varieties X containing G as an open orbit. We prove that X is a toric variety and all such actions of G on X correspond to Demazure roots of the fan of X. In these terms, the orbit structure of a G-variety X is described.
Consider the abelian category ${\mathcal C}$ of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field $k$, its full subcategory ${\mathcal F}$ of finite group schemes, and the associated pro category ${\rm Pro}({\mathcal C})$ (resp. ${\rm Pro}({\mathcal F})$) of pro-algebraic (resp. profinite) group schemes. When $k$ is perfect, we show that the profinite fundamental group $\varpi_1 : {\rm Pro}({\mathcal C}) \to {\rm Pro}({\mathcal F})$ is left exact and commutes with base change under algebraic field extensions; as a consequence, the higher profinite homotopy functors $\varpi_i$ vanish for $i…
We review some recent results and conjectures saying that, roughly speaking, periodic cyclic homology of a smooth non-commutative algebraic variety should carry all the additional "motivic" structures possessed by the usual de Rham cohomology of a smooth algebraic variety (specifically, an R-Hodge structure for varieties over R, and a filtered Dieudonne module structure for varieties over Z_p). To appear in Proc. ICM 2010.
For a rational map $ϕ: X \to G$ from a normal algebraic variety $X$ to a commutative algebraic group $G$, we define the modulus of $ϕ$ as an effective divisor on $X$. We study the properties of the modulus. This work generalizes the known theories for curves to higher dimensional varieties.
We observe algebraic derivations on an affine domain B defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, which are called locally finite derivations in commutative and non-commutative contexts in other references. We observe the graded ring structure which the algebraic derivation defines on B, and give characterizations of a polynomial ring in two variables in terms of algebraic derivations.
We recover results by Ullmo-Yafaev and Peterzil-Starchenko on the closure of the image of an algebraic variety in a compact complex torus. Our approach uses directed closed currents and allows us to extend the result for dimension 1 flows to the setting of commutative complex Lie groups which are not necessarily compact. A version of the classical Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem for commutative complex Lie groups is also given.
We study non-commutative projective lines over not necessarily algebraic bimodules. In particular, we give a complete description of their categories of coherent sheaves and show they are derived equivalent to certain bimodule species. This allows us to classify modules over these species and thus generalize, and give a geometric interpretation for, results of C. Ringel.
If $V$ is a commutative algebraic group over a field $k$, $O$ is a commutative ring that acts on $V$, and $I$ is a finitely generated free $O$-module with a right action of the absolute Galois group of $k$, then there is a commutative algebraic group $I \otimes_O V$ over $k$, which is a twist of a power of $V$. These group varieties have applications to cryptography (in the cases of abelian varieties and algebraic tori over finite fields) and to the arithmetic of abelian varieties over number fields. For purposes of such applications we devote this article to making explicit this tensor produc…
Let G be a commutative algebraic group over Q. Let Gamma be a subgroup of G(Q) contained in the union of the compact subgroups of G(Q_p). We formulate a guess for the dimension of the closure of Gamma in G(Q_p), and show that its correctness for certain tori is equivalent to Leopoldt's conjecture.
In this article we study interpolation estimates on a special class of compactifications of commutative algebraic groups constructed by Serre. We obtain a large quantitative improvement over previous results due to Masser and the first author and our main result has the same level of accuracy as the best known multiplicity estimates. The improvements come both from using special properties of the compactifications which we consider and from a different approach based upon Seshadri constants and vanishing theorems.
We prove a canonical Kunneth decomposition for the motive of a commutative group scheme over a field. Moreover, we show that this decomposition behaves under the group law just as in cohomology. We also deduce applications of the decomposition to the existence of a weight filtration, computation of any Weil cohomology theory and study of 1-motives.
This paper lays out a foundation for a theory of supertropical algebraic geometry, relying on commutative $ν$-algebra. To this end, the paper introduces $\mathfrak{q}$-congruences, carried over $ν$-semirings, whose distinguished ghost and tangible clusters allow both quotienting and localization. Utilizing these clusters, $\mathfrak{g}$-prime, $\mathfrak{g}$-radical, and maximal $\mathfrak{q}$-congruences are naturally defined, satisfying the classical relations among analogous ideals. Thus, a foundation of systematic theory of commutative $ν$-algebra is laid. In this framework, the underlying…
Consider the abelian category $\mathcal{C}_k$ of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field $k$. By results of Serre and Oort, $\mathcal{C}_k$ has homological dimension $1$ (resp. $2$) if $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic $0$ (resp. positive). In this article, we explore the abelian category of commutative algebraic groups up to isogeny, defined as the quotient of $\mathcal{C}_k$ by the full subcategory $\mathcal{F}_k$ of finite $k$-group schemes. We show that $\mathcal{C}_k/\mathcal{F}_k$ has homological dimension $1$, and we determine its projective or injective object…
We prove a conjecture of Medvedev and Scanlon for endomorphisms of connected commutative linear algebraic groups $G$ defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{k}$ of characteristic $0$. That is, if $Φ\colon G\longrightarrow G$ is a dominant endomorphism, we prove that one of the following holds: either there exists a non-constant rational function $f\in \mathbb{k}(G)$ preserved by $Φ$ (i.e., $f\circ Φ= f$), or there exists a point $x\in G(\mathbb{k})$ whose $Φ$-orbit is Zariski dense in $G$.
We construct new examples of multidimensional commuting matrix differential operators and a multidimensional analog of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili hierarchy.
The works of R. Descartes, I. M. Gelfand and A. Grothendieck have convinced us that commutative rings should be thought of as rings of functions on some appropriate (commutative) spaces. If we try to push this notion forward we reach the realm of Non-commutative Geometry. The confluence of ideas comes here mainly from three seemingly disparate sources, namely, quantum physics, operator algebras (Connes-style) and algebraic geometry. Following the title of the article, an effort has been made to provide an overview of the third point of view. Since na\" ive efforts to generalize commutative alg…
Let $G$ be a commutative algebraic group defined over a number field $K$ that is disjoint over $K$ to $\mathbb G_a$ and satisfies the condition of semistability. Consider a linear form $l$ on the Lie algebra of $G$ with algebraic coefficients and an algebraic point $u$ in a $p$-adic neighbourhood of the origin with the condition that $l$ does not vanish at $u$. We give a lower bound for the $p$-adic absolute value of $l(u)$ which depends up to an effectively computable constant only on the height of the linear form, the height of the point $u$ and $p$.
In this paper we give a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected complex reductive algebraic group, we show that the category of representations of its Langlands dual is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian. We can work with perverse sheaves with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring and then we recover the representation theory of the split form of the dual group over the commutative ring.
In this paper, we study affine commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine spaces over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. We obtain full classification of such structures on $\mathbb{A}_K^2$ and $\mathbb{A}_K^3$ and describe some generalizations on $\mathbb{A}_K^n$ for any dimension $n$.
We consider non-commutative deformations of sheaves on algebraic varieties. We develop some tools to determine parameter algebras of versal non-commutative deformations for partial simple collections and the structure sheaves of smooth rational curves. We apply them to universal flopping contractions of length 2 and higher. We confirm Donovan-Wemyss conjecture in the case of deformations of Laufer's flops.
Let G be a connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p (possibly 0), and X a variety on which G acts transitively with connected stabilizers. We show that any étale Galois cover of X of degree prime to p is also homogeneous, and that the maximal prime-to-p quotient of the étale fundamental group of X is commutative. We moreover obtain an explicit bound for the number of topological generators of the said quotient. When G is commutative, we also obtain a description of the prime-to-p torsion in the Brauer group of G.
This paper develops a representation-theoretic approach to the isogeny category $\underline{\mathcal{C}}$ of commutative group schemes of finite type over a field $k$, studied in arXiv:1602:00222. We construct a ring $R$ such that $\underline{\mathcal{C}}$ is equivalent to the category $R$-mod of all left $R$-modules of finite length. We also construct an abelian category of $R$-modules, $R$-$\widetilde{\rm mod}$, which is hereditary, has enough projectives, and contains $R$-mod as a Serre subcategory; this yields a more conceptual proof of the main result of [loc. cit.], asserting that $\unde…
Let $G$ be a commutative algebraic group embedded in projective space and $Γ$ a finitely generated subgroup of $G$. From these data we construct a chain of algebraic subgroups of $G$ which is intimately related to obstructions to multiplicity or interpolation estimates. Let $γ_1,...,γ_l$ denote a family of generators of $Γ$ and, for any $S>1$, let $Γ(S)$ be the set of elements $n_1γ_1+..+n_lγ_l$ with integers $n_j$ such that $|n_j| < S$. Then this chain of subgroups controls, for large values of $S$, the distribution of $Γ(S)$ with respect to algebraic subgroups of $G$. As an application we es…
We study in this article the dual of a (strictly) commutative group stack $G$ and give some applications. Using the Picard functor and the Picard stack of $G$, we first give some sufficient conditions for $G$ to be dualizable. Then, for an algebraic stack $X$ with suitable assumptions, we define an Albanese morphism $a_X : X\to A^1(X)$ where $A^1(X)$ is a torsor under the dual commutative group stack $A^0(X)$ of $Pic_{X/S}$. We prove that $a_X$ satisfies a natural universal property. We give two applications of our Albanese morphism. On the one hand, we give a geometric description of the elem…
The design and implementation of parallel algorithms is a fundamental task in computer algebra. Combining the computer algebra system Singular and the workflow management system GPI-Space, we have developed an infrastructure for massively parallel computations in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. In this note, we give an overview on the current capabilities of this framework by looking into three sample applications: determining smoothness of algebraic varieties, computing GIT-fans in geometric invariant theory, and determining tropicalizations. These applications employ algorithmic …
In this paper we define the algebraic sets and the ideal of points for bijective skew PBW extensions with coefficients in left Noetherian domains. Some properties of affine algebraic sets of commutative algebraic geometry will be extended, in particular, a Zariski topology will be constructed. Assuming additionally that the extension is quasi-commutative with polynomial center and the ring of coefficients is an algebraically closed field, we will prove an adapted version of the Hilbert's Nullstellensatz theorem that covers the classical one. The Gröbner bases of skew PBW extensions will be use…
We generalize a construction of Freudenburg and Moser-Jauslin in order to obtain an example of a non-linearizable action of a commutative reductive algebraic group on the affine space for every field of characteristic zero which admits a quadratic field extension.
It is well-known that classical two-dimensional topological field theories are in one-to-one correspondence with commutative Frobenius algebras. An important extension of classical two-dimensional topological field theories is provided by open-closed two-dimensional topological field theories. In this paper we extend open-closed two-dimensional topological field theories to nonorientable surfaces. We call them Klein topological field theories(KTFT). We prove that KTFTs bijectively correspond to algebras with certain additional structures, called structure algebras. Semisimple structure algebra…
In this paper we prove the following result: if two 2-dimensional 2-homogeneous rational vector fields commute, then either both vector fields can be explicitly integrated to produce rational flows with orbits being lines through the origin, or both flows can be explicitly integrated in terms of algebraic functions. In the latter case, orbits of each flow are given in terms of $1$-homogeneous rational functions $W$ as curves $W(x,y)=\textrm{const}$. An exhaustive method to construct such commuting algebraic flows is presented. The degree of the so-obtained algebraic functions in two variables …
We attempt to develop a general algebro-geometric study of the moduli stack of commutative, 1-parameter formal Lie groups. We emphasize the pro-algebraic structure of this stack: it is the inverse limit, over varying n, of moduli stacks of n-buds, and these latter stacks are algebraic. Our main results pertain to aspects of the height stratification relative to fixed prime p on the stacks of buds and formal Lie groups. We conclude with a largely expository account of some foundational material on limits in bicategories.
The method of direct computation of universal (fibred) product in the category of commutative associative algebras of finite type with unity over a field is given and proven. The field of coefficients is not supposed to be algebraically closed and can be of any characteristic. Formation of fibred product of commutative associative algebras is an algebraic counterpart of gluing algebraic schemes by means of some equivalence relation in algebraic geometry. If initial algebras are finite-dimensional vector spaces the dimension of their product obeys Grassmann-like formula. Finite-dimensional case…
Several algebro-geometric properties of commutative rings of partial differential operators as well as several geometric constructions are investigated. In particular, we show how to associate a geometric data by a commutative ring of partial differential operators, and we investigate the properties of these geometric data. This construction is similar to the construction of a formal module of Baker-Akhieser functions. On the other hand, there is a recent generalization of Sato's theory which belongs to the third author of this paper. We compare both approaches to the commutative rings of part…
In this paper we propose a unified approach to (topological) string theory on certain singular spaces in their large volume limit. The approach exploits the non-commutative structure of D-branes, so the space is described by an algebraic geometry of non-commutative rings. The paper is devoted to the study of examples of these algebras. In our study there is an auxiliary commutative algebraic geometry of the center of the (local) algebras which plays an important role as the target space geometry where closed strings propagate. The singularities that are resolved will be the singularities of th…
Products, multiplicative Chern characters, and finite coefficients, are unarguably among the most important tools in algebraic K-theory. Although they admit numerous different constructions, they are not yet fully understood at the conceptual level. In this article, making use of the theory of non-commutative motives, we change this state of affairs by characterizing these constructions in terms of simple, elegant, and precise universal properties. We illustrate the potential of our results by developing two of its manyfold consequences: (1) the multiplicativity of the negative Chern character…
Reflexive functors of modules naturally appear in Algebraic Geometry, mainly in the theory of linear representations of group schemes, and in "duality theories". In this paper we study and determine reflexive functors and we give many properties of reflexive functors.
Fix a prime number $p$. We report on some recent developments in algebraic geometry (broadly construed) over $p$-adically complete commutative rings. These developments include foundational advances within the subject as well as external applications.
Traditionally, Hodge structures are associated with complex projective varieties. In my expository lectures I discussed a non-commutative generalization of Hodge structures in deformation quantization and in derived algebraic geometry.
