Diffusion in inhomogeneous materials can be described by both the Fick and Fokker--Planck diffusion equations. Here, we study a mixed Fick and Fokker-Planck diffusion problem with coefficients rapidly oscillating both in space and time. We obtain macroscopic models performing the homogenization limit by means of the unfolding technique.
The present work is aimed to find suitable exchange conditions for saturated fluid flow in a porous medium, when a fractal microstructure is embedded in the porous matrix. Two different deterministic models are introduced and rigorously analyzed. Also, numerical experiments for each of them are presented to verify the theoretically predicted behavior of the phenomenon and some probabilistic versions are explored numerically, to gain further insight on the phenomenon.
In this paper we study the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes equations in a perforated domain with multiple microstructures. First, under the assumption that the interface between subdomains is a union of Lipschitz surfaces, we show that the effective velocity and pressure are governed by a Darcy law, where the permeability matrix is piecewise constant. The key step is to prove that the effective pressure is continuous across the interface, using Tartar's method of test functions. Secondly, we establish the sharp error estimates for the convergence of the velocity and pres…
We study in detail Hodge-Helmholtz decompositions in non-smooth exterior domains filled with inhomogeneous and anisotropic media. We show decompositions of alternating differential forms belonging to weighted Sobolev spaces into irrotational and solenoidal forms. These decompositions are essential tools, for example, in electro-magnetic theory for exterior domains. In the appendix we translate our results to the classical framework of vector analysis.
We consider the problem of small data global existence for a class of semilinear wave equations with null condition on a Lorentzian background $(\mathbb{R}^{3+1}, g)$ with a \textbf{time dependent metric $g$} coinciding with Minkowski metric outside the cylinder $\{(t, x)| |x|\leq R\}$. We show that the small data global existence result can be reduced to two integrated local energy estimates and demonstrate these estimates in the particular case when $g$ is merely $C^1$ close to the Minkowski metric. One of the novel aspects of this work is that it applies to equations on backgrounds which do…
In this article I give a rigorous construction of the classical and quantum photon field on non-compact manifolds with boundary and in possibly inhomogeneous media. Such a construction is complicated by the presence of zero-modes that may appear in the presence of non-trivial topology of the manifold or the boundary. An important special case is $\mathbb{R}^3$ with obstacles. In this case the zero modes have a direct interpretation in terms of the topology of the obstacle. I give a formula for the renormalised stress energy tensor in terms of an integral kernel of an operator defined by spectr…
We study an elliptic equation with measurable coefficients arising from photo-acoustic imaging in inhomogeneous media. We establish Holder continuity of weak solutions and obtain pointwise bounds for Green's functions subject to Dirichlet or Neumann condition.
We obtain sharp $L^p$ and Hölder estimates for the Neumann function of the operator $\nabla \cdot γ\nabla - ik$ on a bounded domain. We also obtain quantitative description of its singularity. We then apply these estimates to quantitative photo-acoustic imaging in inhomogeneous media. The problem is to reconstruct the optical absorption coefficient of a diametrically small anomaly from the absorbed energy density.
The problem of diffusion in a porous medium with a spatially varying porosity is considered. The particular microstructure analyzed comprises a collection of impenetrable spheres, though the methods developed are general. Two different approaches for calculating the effective diffusion coefficient as a function of the microstructure are presented. The first is a deterministic approach based on the method of multiple scales; the second is a stochastic approach for small volume fraction of spheres based on matched asymptotic expansions. We compare the two approaches, and we show good agreement b…
In this paper, we investigate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem for an inhomogeneous media with conductive boundary conditions. We prove the discreteness and existence of the transmission eigenvalues. We also investigate the inverse spectral problem of gaining information about the material properties from the transmission eigenvalues. In particular, we prove that the first transmission eigenvalue is a monotonic function of the refractive index and boundary conductivity parameter eta, and obtain a uniqueness result for constant coefficients. We provide some numerical examples to dem…
The current paper is concerned with positive stationary solutions and spatial spreading speeds of KPP type evolution equations with random or nonlocal or discrete dispersal in locally spatially inhomogeneous media. It is shown that such an equation has a unique globally stable positive stationary solution and has a spreading speed in every direction. Moreover, it is shown that the localized spatial inhomogeneity of the medium neither slows down nor speeds up the spatial spreading in all the directions.
The time-dependent Maxwell system describing electromagnetic wave propagation in inhomogeneous isotropic media in the one-dimensional case reduces to a Vekua-type equation for bicomplex-valued functions of a hyperbolic variable, see arXiv:1001.0552. In arXiv:1410.4873 using this reduction a representation of a general solution of the system was obtained in terms of a couple of Darboux-associated transmutation operators arXiv:1111.4449. In arXiv:1508.02738 a Fourier-Legendre expansion of transmutation integral kernels was obtained. This expansion is used in the present work for obtaining an exa…
A system of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations is derived from the mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in inhomogeneous media defined on an unbounded domain. Boundary-domain integral equations are formulated in terms of parametrix-based potential type integral operators defined on the boundary and the domain. Mapping properties of parametrix-based potentials on weighted Sobolev spaces are analysed. Equivalence between the original boundary value problem and the system of BDIEs is shown. Uniqueness of solution of the BDIEs is proved using Fredholm Alterna…
In this paper we study the acoustic properties of porous media saturated by an incompressible viscoelastic fluid. The model considered here consists of a linear deformable porous skeleton having memory that is surrounded by a viscoelastic Oldroyd fluid. Assuming the microstructures to be almost periodically distributed and under the almost periodicity hypothesis on the coefficients of the governing equations, we determine the macroscopic equivalent medium. To achieve our goal, we use some very recent tools about the sigma convergence of convolution sequences.
This paper settles the existence question for a rather general class of convex optimal design problems with a volume constraint. In low dimensions, we prove the existence of an optimal configuration for general convex minimization problems ruled by bounded measurable degenerate elliptic operators. Under a mild continuity assumption on the medium, the free boundary is proven to enjoy the appropriate weak geometry and we establish the existence of an optimal design for general convex optimal design problems with volume constraints for all dimensions.
We consider the problem of small data global existence for quasilinear wave equations with null condition on a class of Lorentzian manifolds $(\mathbb{R}^{3+1}, g)$ with \textbf{time dependent} inhomogeneous metric. We show that sufficiently small data give rise to a unique global solution for metric which is merely $C^1$ close to the Minkowski metric inside some large cylinder $\{\left.(t, x)\right||x|\leq R\}$ and approaches the Minkowski metric weakly as $|x|\rightarrow \infty$. Based on this result, we give weak but sufficient conditions on a given large solution of quasilinear wave equati…
In this paper, we study optimization of the first eigenvalue of the heat equation with spatially nonuniform conductivity on a bounded domain under several constraints for the conductivity. We consider this problem in various boundary conditions and various type of topology of domains. As a result, we numerically observe several common criteria of the conductivity for optimizing eigenvalues in terms of corresponding eigenfunctions, which are independent of topology of domains and boundary conditions. The geometric characterization of optimizers are also numerically observed.
A one-way wave equation is an evolution equation in one of the space directions that describes (approximately) a wave field. The exact wave field is approximated in a high frequency, microlocal sense. Here we derive the pseudodifferential one-way wave equation for an inhomogeneous acoustic medium using a known factorization argument. We give explicitly the two highest order terms, that are necessary for approximating the solution. A wave front (singularity) whose propagation velocity has non-zero component in the special direction is correctly described. The equation can't describe singulariti…
We consider the homogenisation of the Stokes equations in a porous medium which is evolving in time. At the interface of the pore space and the solid part, we prescribe an inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, which enables to model a no-slip boundary condition at the evolving boundary. We pass rigorously to the homogenisation limit with the two-scale transformation method. In order to derive uniform a priori estimates, we show a Korn-type inequality for the two-scale transformation method and construct a family of $\varepsilon$-scaled operators $\operatorname{div}_\varepsilon^{-1}$, whi…
The interior Dirichlet boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in non-homogeneous media is reduced to a system of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations (BDIEs) employing the parametrix obtained in (Fresneda-Portillo, 2019) different from (Chkadua et. al 2009). We further extend the results obtained in (Fresneda-Portillo, 2019) for the mixed problem in a smooth domain with $L^{2}(Ω)$ right hand side to Lipschitz domains and source term $f$ in the Sobolev space $H^{-1}(Ω)$, where neither the classical nor the canonical co-normal derivatives are well defined. Equivalence between the system…
This paper extends approach of our joint paper with Kähler and recent paper of the author, published in 2021, on problems of the static Maxwell system in three dimensional inhomogeneous media. Applied pseudoanalytic function theory developed by Kravchenko et al. allows to characterize, in particular, meridional and transverse fields in cylindrically layered media. Geometric properties of the electric field gradient ($EFG$) tensor within a wide range of meridional fields allows us to introduce the concept of $α$-meridional mappings of the first and second kind depending on the values of a real …
The inhomogeneous Muskat problem models the dynamics of an interface between two fluids of differing characteristics inside a non-uniform porous medium. We consider the case of a porous media with a permeability jump across a horizontal boundary away from an interface between two fluids of different viscosities and densities. For initial data of explicit medium size, depending on the characteristics of the fluids and porous media, we will prove the global existence and uniqueness of a solution which is instantly analytic and decays in time to the flat interface.
Eigenvalues arising in scattering theory have been envisioned as a potential source of target signatures in nondestructive testing of materials, whereby perturbations of the eigenvalues computed for a penetrable medium would be used to infer changes in its constitutive parameters relative to some reference values. We consider a recently introduced modification of the class of Stekloff eigenvalues, in which the inclusion of a smoothing operator guarantees that infinitely many eigenvalues exist under minimal assumptions on the medium, and we derive precise formulas that quantify the perturbation…
