Let $G$ be a real compact Lie group, such that $G=G^0\rtimes C_2$, with $G^0$ simple. Here $G^0$ is the connected component of $G$ containing the identity and $C_2$ is the cyclic group of order $2$. We give a criterion for whether an orthogonal representation $π: G \to \mathrm{O}(V)$ lifts to $\mathrm{Pin}(V)$ in terms of the highest weights of $π$. We also calculate the first and second Stiefel-Whitney classes of the representations of the Orthogonal groups.
We determine which orthogonal representations V of GL(n,q) lift to the double cover Pin(V ) of the orthogonal group O(V ). We cover all n and prime powers q, except for (n; q) =(3,4).
Let G be a connected reductive group over a field of characteristic zero, and consider an orthogonal representation of G. We give a simple criterion for whether the representation lifts to the spin group, in terms of the highest weights of the irreducible constituents of the representation.
A real representation $π$ of a finite group may be regarded as a homomorphism to an orthogonal group $\Or(V)$. For symmetric groups $S_n$, alternating groups $A_n$, and products $S_n \times S_{n'}$ of symmetric groups, we give criteria for whether $π$ lifts to the double cover $\Pin(V)$ of $\Or(V)$, in terms of character values. From these criteria, we compute the second Stiefel-Whitney classes of these representations.
In this paper, we give a complete picture of Howe correspondence for the setting ($O(E, b), Pin(E, b), Π$), where $O(E, b)$ is an orthogonal group (real or complex), $Pin(E, b)$ is the two-fold Pin-covering of $O(E, b)$, and $Π$ is the spinorial representation of $Pin(E, b)$. More precisely, for a dual pair ($G, G'$) in $O(E, b)$, we determine explicitly the nature of its preimages $(\tilde{G}, \tilde{G'})$ in $Pin(E, b)$, and prove that apart from some exceptions, $(\tilde{G}, \tilde{G'})$ is always a dual pair in $Pin(E, b)$; then we establish the Howe correspondence for $Π$ with respect to …
Let $\mathbb S$ be a Clifford module for the complexified Clifford algebra $\mathbb{C}\ell(\mathbb R^n)$, $\mathbb S'$ its dual, $ρ$ and $ρ'$ be the corresponding representations of the spin group ${\rm Spin}(n)$. The group $G= {\rm Spin}(1,n+1)$ is a (twofold) covering of the conformal group of $\mathbb R^n$. For $λ, μ\in \mathbb C$, let $π_{ρ, λ}$ (resp. $π_{ρ',μ}$) be the spinorial representation of $G$ realized on a (subspace of) $C^\infty(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S)$ (resp. $C^\infty(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb S')$). For $0\leq k\leq n$ and $m\in \mathbb N$, we construct a symmetry breaking different…
We discuss a Clifford algebra framework for discrete symmetry groups (such as reflection, Coxeter, conformal and modular groups), leading to a surprising number of new results. Clifford algebras allow for a particularly simple description of reflections via `sandwiching'. This extends to a description of orthogonal transformations in general by means of `sandwiching' with Clifford algebra multivectors, since all orthogonal transformations can be written as products of reflections by the Cartan-Dieudonné theorem. We begin by viewing the largest non-crystallographic reflection/Coxeter group $H_4…
For a $p$-adic field $F$, the embeddings of a tame supercuspidal representation of $G= {\rm GL}_n (F)$ in the space of smooth functions on the set of symmetric matrices in $G$ are determined.
We show how quiver representations and their invariant theory natu- rally arise in the study of some moduli spaces parametrizing bundles dened on an algebraic curve, and how they lead to ne results regarding the geometry of these spaces.
We construct via generators and relations a generalized Weil representation for the split orthogonal group $\ot_q(2n,2n)$ over a finite field of $q$ elements. Besides, we give an initial decomposition of the representation found. We also show that the constructed representation is equal to the restriction of the Weil representation to $\ot_q(2n,2n)$ for the reductive dual pair $(\Sp_2(\mathbb{F}_q),\ot_q(2n,2n))$ and that the initial decomposition is the same as the decomposition with respect to the action of $\Sp_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$.
For every absolutely irreducible orthogonal representation of a twisted form of SL2 over a field of characteristic zero, we compute the "unique" symmetric bilinear form that is invariant under the group action. We also prove the analogous result for Weyl modules in prime characteristic (including characteristic 2) and an isomorphism between two symmetric bilinear forms given by binomial coefficients.
The conformal transformations with respect to the metric defining the orthogonal Lie algebra o(n) give rise to a one-parameter (c) family of inhomogeneous first-order differential operator representations of the orthogonal Lie algebra o(n+2). Letting these operators act on the space of exponential-polynomial functions that depend on a parametric vector a, we prove that the space forms an irreducible o(n+2)-module for any constant c if the vector a is not on a certain hypersurface. By partially swapping differential operators and multiplication operators, we obtain more general differential ope…
We give a complete description of the discrete spectra in the branching law $Π|_{G'}$ with respect to the pair $(G,G')=(O(p,q), O(p',q') \times O(p'',q''))$ for irreducible unitary representations $Π$ of $G$ that are "geometric quantization" of minimal elliptic coadjoint orbits. We also construct explicitly all holographic operators and prove a closed Parseval-type formula.
We prove that a polar orthogonal representation of a real reductive algebraic group has the same closed orbits as the isotropy representation of a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space. We also develop a partial structural theory of polar orthogonal representations of real reductive algebraic groups which slightly generalizes some results of the structural theory of real reductive Lie algebras.
We show that the reduction mod p of an orthogonal linear representation is orthogonal, and we generalize this fact to representations of algebras with involution. The proofs make an essential use of the notion of " middle lattices ".
We further develop and simplify the general theory of distinguished tame supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups due to Hakim and Murnaghan, as well as the analogous theory for finite reductive groups due to Lusztig. We apply our results to study the representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with $n$ odd and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field, that are distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group in $n$ variables. In particular, we determine precisely when a supercuspidal representation is distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group and, if so, that the space of distingui…
We study the generalized theta lifting between the double covers of split special orthogonal groups, which uses the non-minimal theta representations constructed by Bump, Friedberg and Ginzburg. We focus on the theta liftings of non-generic representations and make a conjecture that gives an upper bound of the first non-zero occurrence of the liftings, depending only on the unipotent orbit. We prove both global and local results that support the conjecture.
A weight basis for each finite-dimensional irreducible representation of the orthogonal Lie algebra o(2n) is constructed. The basis vectors are parametrized by the D-type Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns. Explicit formulas for the matrix elements of generators of o(2n) in this basis are given. The construction is based on the representation theory of the Yangians and extends our previous results for the symplectic Lie algebras.
In this work, we explicitly compute a certain family of twisted gamma factors of a simple supercuspidal representation $π$ of a $p$-adic odd orthogonal group. These computations, together with analogous computations for general linear groups carried out in previous work with Liu, allow us to give a prediction for the Langlands parameter of $π$. If we assume the "depth-preserving conjecture", we prove that our prediction is correct if $p$ is sufficiently large.
Let $π$ be a simple supercuspidal representation of the split even special orthogonal group. We compute the Rankin-Selberg $γ$-factors for rank 1-twists of $π$ by quadratic tamely ramified characters of $F^*$. We then use our results to determine the Langlands parameter of $π$ up to its restriction to the wild inertia subgroup, subject to an analogue of a work of Blondel, Henniart, and Stevens for $SO_{2l}$. In the particular case of the field $\mathbb{Q}_2$, we are able to describe the parameter completely.
The formal degree conjecture relates the formal degree of an irreducible square-integrable representation of a reductive group over a local field to the special value of the adjoint $γ$-factor of its $L$-parameter. In this paper, we prove the formal degree conjecture for odd special orthogonal and metaplectic groups in the generic case, which combined with Arthur's work on the local Langlands correspondence implies the conjecture in full generality.
We investigate the finite-dimensional representation theory of two-parameter quantum orthogonal and symplectic groups that we found in [BGH] under the assumption that $rs^{-1}$ is not a root of unity and extend some results [BW1, BW2] obtained for type $A$ to types $B$, $C$ and $D$. We construct the corresponding $R$-matrices and the quantum Casimir operators, by which we prove that the complete reducibility Theorem also holds for the categories of finite-dimensional weight modules for types $B$, $C$, $D$.
Let $(G,H)$ be a reductive spherical pair and $P\subset H$ a parabolic subgroup such that $(G,P)$ is spherical. The triples $(G,H,P)$ with this property are called multiplicity free systems and they are classified in this paper. Denote by $π^{H}_μ=\mathrm{ind}_{P}^{H}μ$ the Borel-Weil realization of the irreducible $H$-representation of highest weight $μ\in P^{+}_{H}$ and consider the induced representation $\mathrm{ind}_{P}^{G}χ_μ=\mathrm{ind}_{H}^{G}π^{H}_μ$, a multiplicity free induced representation. Some properties of the spectrum of the multiplicity free induced representations are discu…
We prove the existence of $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations corresponding to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of certain quasi-split forms of $\mathrm{GSO}_{2n}$ under the local hypotheses that there is a Steinberg component and that the archimedean parameters are regular for the standard representation. This is based on the cohomology of Shimura varieties of abelian type, of type $D^{\mathbb{H}}$, arising from forms of $\mathrm{GSO}_{2n}$. As an application, under similar hypotheses, we compute automorphic multiplicities, prove meromorphic continuation of (…
This work focuses on non-compact groups and their applications to quantum gravity, mainly through the use of tensor operators. First, the mathematical theory of tensor operators for a Lie group is recast in a new way which is used to generalise the Wigner-Eckart theorem to non-compact groups. The result relies on the knowledge of the recoupling theory between finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional irreducible representations of the group; here the previously unconsidered cases of the 3D and 4D Lorentz groups are investigated in detail. As an application, the Wigner-Eckart theorem is used …
We prove a generalization of Schur orthogonality relations for certain classes of representations of Gromov hyperbolic groups. We apply the obtained results to show that representations of non-abelian free groups associated to the Patterson-Sullivan measures corresponding to a wide class of invariant metrics on the group are monotonous in the sense introduced by Kuhn and Steger. This in particular includes representations associated to harmonic measures of a wide class of random walks.
We consider irreducible unitary representations $A_i$ of G=SO(n+1,1) with the same infinitesimal character as the trivial representation and representations $B_j$ of H=SO(n,1) with the same properties and discuss H-equivariant homomorphisms Hom_H($A_i,B_j$). For tempered representations our results confirm the predictions of conjectures by B. Gross and D. Prasad.
Deformed orthogonal and pseudo-orthogonal Lie algebras are constructed which differ from deformations of Lie algebras in terms of Cartan subalgebra and root vectors and which make it possible to construct representations by operators acting according to Gel'fand--Tsetlin-type formulas. Unitary representations of the q-deformed algebras U_q(so_{n,1}) are found.
We provide a new tableau model from which one can easily deduce the characters of finite-dimensional irreducible polynomial representations of the special orthogonal group $SO_n(\mathbb{C})$. This model originates from the representation theory of the $\imath$quantum group (also known as the quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebra) of type $\mathrm{A\!I}$, and is equipped with a combinatorial structure, which we call $\mathrm{A\!I}$-crystal structure. This structure enables us to describe combinatorially the tensor product of an $SO_n(\mathbb{C})$-module and a $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$-module, and …
