In conformal field theories (CFTs) of dimension $d>3$, two-dimensional (2d) conformal defects are characterised in part by central charges defined via the defect's contribution to the trace anomaly. However, in general for interacting CFTs these central charges are difficult to calculate. For superconformal 2d defects in supersymmetric (SUSY) CFTs (SCFTs), we show how to compute these defect central charges from the SUSY partition function either on $S^d$ with defect along $S^2$, or on $S^1 \times S^{d-1}$ with defect along $S^1 \times S^1$. In the latter case we propose that defect central charges appear in an overall normalisation factor, as part of the SUSY Casimir energy. For 2d half-BPS defects in 4d ${\mathcal N}=2$ SCFTs and in the 6d ${\mathcal N}=(2,0)$ SCFT we obtain novel, exact results for defect central charges using existing results for partition functions computed using SUSY localisation, SUSY indices, and correspondences to 2d Liouville, Toda, and $q$-deformed Yang-Mills theories. Some of our results for defect central charges agree with those obtained previously via holography, showing that the latter are not just large-$N$ and/or strong-coupling limits, but are exact. Our methods can be straightforwardly extended to other superconformal defects, of various codimension, as we demonstrate for a 4d defect in the 6d ${\mathcal N}=(2,0)$ SCFT.
We initiate the classification of unitary superconformal defects in unitary superconformal field theories (SCFT) of diverse spacetime dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. Our method explores general constraints from the defect superconformal symmetry, unitarity, as well as consistency conditions of local bulk-defect couplings. Such features are common to all superconformal defects regardless of any Lagrangian description. In particular, modified Ward identities of conserved currents in the presence of the defect induce a distinguished set of conformal primary operators on the defect worldvolume, which…
We study superconformal defect lines in the tricritical Ising model in 2 dimensions. By the folding trick, a superconformal defect is mapped to a superconformal boundary of the N=1 superconformal unitary minimal model of c=7/5 with D_6-E_6 modular invariant. It turns out that the complete set of the boundary states of c=7/5 D_6-E_6 model cannot be interpreted as the consistent set of superconformal defects in the tricritical Ising model since it does not contain the "no defect" boundary state. Instead, we find a set of 18 consistent superconformal defects including "no defect" and satisfying t…
Recently a prescription to compute the four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal index in the presence of certain BPS surface defects has been given. These surface defects are labelled by symmetric representations of SU(N). In the present paper we give a prescription to compute the superconformal index in the presence of surface defects labelled by arbitrary representations of SU(N). Furthermore, we extend the dictionary between the N = 2 superconformal Schur-index and correlators of q-deformed Yang-Mills to incorporate such surface defects.
We compute the 3d N = 2 superconformal indices for 3d/1d coupled systems, which arise as the worldvolume theories of intersecting surface defects engineered by Higgsing 5d N = 1 gauge theories. We generalize some known 3d dualities, including non-Abelian 3d mirror symmetry and 3d/3d correspondence, to some of the simple 3d/1d coupled systems. Finally we propose a q-Virasoro construction for the superconformal indices.
The analytic properties of the N = 2 superconformal index are given a physical interpretation in terms of certain BPS surface defects, which arise as the IR limit of supersymmetric vortices. The residue of the index at a pole in flavor fugacity is interpreted as the index of a superconformal field theory without this flavor symmetry, but endowed with an additional surface defect. The residue can be efficiently extracted by acting on the index with a difference operator of Ruijsenaars-Schneider type. By imposing the associativity constraints of S-duality, we are then able to evaluate the index …
We review recent progress in the study of line defects in three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter superconformal field theories, notably the ABJM theory. The first part is focused on kinematical defects supporting a topological sector of the theory. After reviewing the construction of this sector, we concentrate on the evaluation of topological correlators from the partition function of the mass-deformed ABJM theory and provide evidence on the existence of a topological quantum mechanics living on the line. In the second part, we consider dynamical defects realized as latitude BPS Wilson loops f…
We compute the supersymmetric partition function of the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory of type $A_{N-1}$ on $S^1 \times S^5$ in the presence of both codimension two and codimension four defects. We concentrate on a limit of the partition function depending on a single parameter. From the allowed supersymmetric configurations of defects we find a precise match with the characters of irreducible modules of $W_N$ algebras and affine Lie algebras of type $A_{N-1}$.
This paper focuses on the analysis of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal theories in the presence of a defect from the point of view of the conformal bootstrap. We will concentrate first on the case of codimension one, where the defect is a boundary that preserves half of the supersymmetry. After studying the constraints imposed by supersymmetry, we will obtain the Ward identities associated to two-point functions of $\tfrac{1}{2}$-BPS operators and write their solution as a superconformal block expansion. Due to a surprising connection between spacetime and R-symmetry conformal blocks, our r…
We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories coupled to three-dimensional superconformal boundary or defect degrees of freedom. Starting with bulk N=2, d=4 theories, we construct abelian models preserving N=2, d=3 supersymmetry and the conformal symmetries under which the boundary/defect is invariant. We write the action, including the bulk terms, in N=2, d=3 superspace. Moreover we derive Callan-Symanzik equations for these models using their superconformal transformation properties and show that the beta functions vanish to all orders in perturbation theory, such that the models r…
We study surface defects in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ superconformal gauge theories of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ obtained from the 6d (1,0) theories of type $A_{N-1}$, which are worldvolume theories on $N$ M5-branes at $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$ singularities, compactified on Riemann surfaces with punctures. First we apply a method based on Riemann surface description and obtain the superconformal index of the theories in the presence of surface defects labelled by arbitrary symmetric representations of $su(N)$. Then we propose another description for the same surface defects, which involves 4d-…
We study the constraints of superconformal symmetry on codimension two defects in four-dimensional superconformal field theories. We show that the one-point function of the stress tensor and the two-point function of the displacement operator are related, and we discuss the consequences of this relation for the Weyl anomaly coefficients as well as in a few examples, including the supersymmetric Rényi entropy. Imposing consistency with existing results, we propose a general relation that could hold for sufficiently supersymmetric defects of arbitrary dimension and codimension. Turning to $\math…
We study the superconformal index of the N=4 super-Yang-Milles theory on S^3 X S^1 with the half BPS superconformal surface operator (defect) inserted at the great circle of S^3. The half BPS superconformal surface operators preserve the same supersymmetry as well as the symmetry of the chemical potential used in the definition of the superconformal index, so the structure and the parameterization of the superconformal index remain unaffected by the presence of the surface operator. On the surface defect, a two-dimensional (4,4) superconformal field theory resides, and the four-dimensional sup…
We study operator insertions into 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in N = 6 ABJM theory and investigate their two-point correlators. In this framework, the energy emitted by a heavy moving probe can be exactly obtained from some two-point coefficients of bosonic and fermionic insertions. This allows us to confirm an early proposal for computing the Bremsstrahlung function in terms of certain supersymmetric circular Wilson loops, whose value might be accessible to localization techniques. In the derivation of this result we also elucidate the structure of protected multiplets in the relevant superconformal…
We investigate an AdS_4 x L_2 D5-brane in AdS_5 x X_5 space-time, in the context of AdS/dCFT correspondence. Here, X_5 is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold and L_2 is a submanifold of X_5. This brane has the same supersymmetry as the 3-dimensional N=1 superconformal symmetry if L_2 is a special Legendrian submanifold in X_5. In this case, this brane is supposed to correspond to a superconformal wall defect in 4-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We construct these new string backgrounds and show they have the correct supersymmetry, also in the case with non-trivial gauge flux on L_2. The simple…

In this paper we continue the study of the superconformal index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ in the presence of surface defects. Our main result is the construction of an algebra of difference operators, whose elements are labeled by irreducible representations of $A_{N-1}$. For the fully antisymmetric tensor representations these difference operators are the Hamiltonians of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. The structure constants of the algebra are elliptic generalizations of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the Macdonald limit, we id…
In this paper we investigate the influence of an external magnetic field on a flavoured holographic gauge theory dual to the D3/D5 intersection at finite temperature. Our study shows that the external magnetic field has a freezing effect on the confinement/ deconfinement phase transition. We construct the corresponding phase diagram. We investigate some thermodynamic quantities of the theory. A study of the entropy reveals enhanced relative jump of the entropy at the "chiral" phase transition. A study of the magnetization shows that both the confined and deconfined phases exhibit diamagnetic r…
The presence of a domain wall is shown to require a tensorial central charge extension of the superconformal algebra. The currents associated with the conformal central charges are constructed as spacetime moments of the SUSY tensorial central charge current. The supercurrent is obtained and it contains the R symmetry current, the SUSY spinor currents, the energy-momentum tensor and the SUSY tensorial central charge currents as its component currents. All tensorial central charge extended superconformal currents are constructed from the supercurrent. The superconformal currents' and the confor…
5d ray index is the 5d superconformal index in the presence of a ray-like defect. An elementary ray defect flows to a fundamental Wilson ray in IR gauge theory. In 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theory(SCFT) with $E_n$ global symmetry, we compute the ray index associated with an adjoint Wilson ray. We show that the operators that appear in the index are non-trivially charged under the center of the global symmetry $E_n$. The charge under the center being twice compared with the center charge carried by the elementary ray operator indicates a non-trivial OPE between the ray-like defect…
The ratio of central charges in four-dimensional CFTs has been suggested by Hofman and Maldacena to lie within an interval whose boundaries are fixed by the number of supersymmetries. We compute this ratio for a set of interacting N=1 superconformal field theories which arise as RG fixed points of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with adjoint and fundamental matter. We do not find violations of the proposed bounds, which appear to be saturated by free field theories.
We present prescriptions for obtaining the central charges, $a$ and $c$, of a four dimensional superconformal quantum field theory from the superconformal index. At infinite $N$, for holographic theories dual to Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds the prescriptions give the $\mathcal{O}(1)$ parts of the central charges. This allows us, among other things, to show the exact AdS/CFT matching of $a$ and $c$ for arbitrary toric quiver CFTs without adjoint matter that are dual to smooth Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds. In addition, we include evidence from non-holographic theories for the applicability of thes…
We study half-BPS line defects in $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories using the bootstrap approach. We concentrate on local excitations constrained to the defect, which means the system is a $1d$ defect CFT with $\mathfrak{osp}(4^*|2)$ symmetry. In order to study correlation functions we construct a suitable superspace, and then use the Casimir approach to calculate a collection of new superconformal blocks. Special emphasis is given to the displacement operator, which controls deformations orthogonal to the defect and is always present in a defect CFT. After setting up the crossing equati…
We deform a defect conformal field theory by an exactly marginal bulk operator and we consider the dependence on the marginal coupling of flat and spherical defect expectation values. For even dimensional spherical defects we find a logarithmic divergence which can be related to a $a$-type defect anomaly coefficient. This coefficient, for defect theories, is not invariant on the conformal manifold and its dependence on the coupling is controlled to all orders by the one-point function of the associated exactly marginal operator. For odd-dimensional defects, the flat and spherical case exhibit …
Starting with the superconformal indices for 4d N=2 and N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, which are related by superpotential deformation, we perform the contour integrations and isolate the residue contributions which can be attributed to the surface defects. These defects can be interpreted as the IR limit of dynamical vortices. Given the 2d N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) world sheet theories for these surface defects, we then verify this statement by explicitly computing their elliptic genera and identifying their fugacity parameters through superconformal algebras. We show them precisely match, and …
We show that in the supersymmetry framework described by a Poincaré superalgebra with tensorial central charges the role of generalized superconformal symmetry which contains all these central charges is played by $OSp(1|2^{k})$, where k=3 for D=4. Following [1,2] we describe the free supertwistor model for $OSp(1|8)$. It appears that in such a scheme the tensorial central charges satisfy additional relations and the model describes the tower of supersymmetric massless states with an arbitrary (integer and half--integer) helicity spectrum.
It is shown that the previously known $N=3$ and $N=4$ superconformal algebras can be contracted consistently by singular scaling of some of the generators. For the later case, by a contraction which depends on the central term, we obtain a new $N=4$ superconformal algebra which contains an $SU(2)\times {U(1)}^4$ Kac-Moody subalgebra and has nonzero central extension.
We present a general method for computing the central charges a and c of N=2 superconformal field theories corresponding to singular points in the moduli space of N=2 gauge theories. Our method relates a and c to the U(1)_R anomalies of the topologically twisted gauge theory. We evaluate these anomalies by studying the holomorphic dependence of the path integral measure on the moduli. We calculate a and c for superconformal points in a variety of gauge theories, including N=4 SU(N), N=2 pure SU(N) Yang-Mills, and USp(2N) with 1 massless antisymmetric and 4 massive fundamental hypermultiplets. …
We study the effect of bulk perturbations of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models on topological defects. In particular, symmetries and more general topological defects which survive the flow to the IR are identified. Our method is to consider the topological subsector and make use of the Landau-Ginzburg formulation to describe RG flows and topological defects in terms of matrix factorizations.
Implications of N=4 superconformal symmetry on Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) operators with two charge defects are studied both at finite charge J and in the BMN limit. We find that all of these belong to a single long supermultiplet explaining a recently discovered degeneracy of anomalous dimensions on the sphere and torus. The lowest dimensional component is an operator of naive dimension J+2 transforming in the [0,J,0] representation of SU(4). We thus find that the BMN operators are large J generalisations of the Konishi operator at J=0. We explicitly construct descendant operators by …
We analyze the constraints imposed by unitarity and crossing symmetry on the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet of ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories in three dimensions. We first derive the superconformal blocks by analyzing the superconformal Ward identity. Our results imply that the OPE of the primary operator of the stress-tensor multiplet with itself must have parity symmetry. We then analyze the relations between the crossing equations, and we find that these equations are mostly redundant. We implement the independent crossing constraints numerically and find bou…
We use modern bootstrap techniques to study half-BPS line defects in 4d N=4 superconformal theories. Specifically, we consider the 1d CFT with OSP(4*|4) superconformal symmetry living on such a defect. Our analysis is general and based only on symmetries, it includes however important examples like Wilson and 't Hooft lines in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We present several numerical bounds on OPE coefficients and conformal dimensions. Of particular interest is a numerical island obtained from a mixed correlator bootstrap that seems to imply a unique solution to crossing. The island is obtained if so…
We investigate superconformal surface defects in four-dimensional N=2 superconformal theories. Each such defect gives rise to a module of the associated chiral algebra and the surface defect Schur index is the character of this module. Various natural chiral algebra operations such as Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction and spectral flow can be interpreted as constructions involving four-dimensional surface defects. We compute the index of these defects in the free hypermultiplet theory and Argyres-Douglas theories, using both infrared techniques involving BPS states, as well as renormalization group f…
Surface operators in the 6d (2,0) theory at large $N$ have a holographic description in terms of M2 branes probing the AdS$_7 \times S^4$ M-theory background. The most symmetric, 1/2-BPS, operator is defined over a planar or spherical surface, and it preserves a 2d superconformal group. This includes, in particular, an $SO(2,2)$ subgroup of 2d conformal transformations, so that the surface operator may be viewed as a conformal defect in the 6d theory. The dual M2 brane has an AdS$_3$ induced geometry, reflecting the 2d conformal symmetry. Here we use the holographic description to extract the …
We implement the conformal bootstrap for N=4 superconformal field theories in four dimensions. Consistency of the four-point function of the stress-energy tensor multiplet imposes significant upper bounds for the scaling dimensions of unprotected local operators as functions of the central charge of the theory. At the threshold of exclusion, a particular operator spectrum appears to be singled out by the bootstrap constraints. For large values of the central charge, this extremal spectrum is compatible with that of supergravity in AdS_5 x S^5. For finite central charge, we conjecture that the …
We complete the program of 2012.15792 about perturbative approaches for $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver theories in four dimensions. We consider several classes of observables in presence of Wilson loops, and we evaluate them with the help of supersymmetric localization. We compute Wilson loop vacuum expectation values, correlators of multiple coincident Wilson loops and one-point functions of chiral operators in presence of them acting as superconformal defects. We extend this analysis to the most general case considering chiral operators and multiple Wilson loops scattered in all the p…
We present a unifying theme relating BPS partition functions and superconformal indices. In the case with complex SUSY central charges (as in N=2 in d=4 and N=(2,2) in d=2) the known results can be reinterpreted as the statement that the BPS partition functions can be used to compute a specialization of the superconformal indices. We argue that in the case with real central charge in the supersymmetry algebra, as in N=1 in d=5 (or the N=2 in d=3), the BPS degeneracy captures the full superconformal index. Furthermore, we argue that refined topological strings, which captures 5d BPS degeneracie…
For a generic value of the central charge, we prove the holomorphic factorization of partition functions for free superconformal fields which are defined on a compact Riemann surface without boundary. The partition functions are viewed as functionals of the Beltrami coefficients and their fermionic partners which variables parametrize superconformal classes of metrics.
The AdS/dCFT correspondence is used to show that a planar q-dimensional superconformal CFT defect expands, under the addition of electric charge and angular momentum, to a supersymmetric higher-dimensional defect of geometry R^q x C, where C is an arbitrary curve. The dual string theory process is the expansion of D-branes and fundamental strings into a supertube in an AdS background.

We construct Z_M, M= 2, 3, 4, 6 orbifold models of the N=2 superconformal field theories with central charge c=3. Then we check the description of the Z_3, Z_4 and Z_6 orbifolds by the N=2 superconformal Landau-Ginzburg models with c=3, by comparing the spectrum of chiral fields, in particular the Witten index Tr(-1)^F.
Four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal quantum field theories contain a subsector carrying the structure of a chiral algebra. Using localization techniques, we show for the free hypermultiplet that this structure can be accessed directly from the path integral on the four-sphere. We extend the localization computation to include supersymmetric surface defects described by a generic 4d/2d coupled system. The presence of a defect corresponds to considering a module of the chiral algebra: our results provide a calculational window into its structure constants.
We study the conformal data of a generic superconformal half-BPS line defect in a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theory. We prove a theory independent relation between the one-point function of the stress tensor in the presence of the line defect and the two-point function of the displacement operator. When the defect is interpreted as a heavy charged particle in a gauge theory, the result relates the energy emitted through Bremsstrahlung with the coupling of the stress tensor to the particle at rest.
The embedding diagrams of representations of the N=2 superconformal algebra with central charge c=3 are given. Some non-unitary representations possess subsingular vectors that are systematically described. The structure of the embedding diagrams is largely defined by the spectral flow symmetry. As an additional consistency check the action of the spectral flow on the characters is calculated.
In the context of boundary conformal field theory, we investigate whether the boundary trace anomaly can depend on marginal directions in the presence of supersymmetry. Recently, it was found that a graphene-like non-supersymmetric conformal field theory with a four-dimensional bulk photon and a three-dimensional boundary electron has two boundary central charges that depend on an exactly marginal direction, namely the gauge coupling. In this work, we supersymmetrize this theory, paying special attention to the boundary terms required by supersymmetry. We study models with 4, 8, and 16 Poincar…
The realizations of the exceptional non-linear (quadratically generated, or W-type) N=8 and N=7 superconformal algebras with Spin(7) and G_2 affine symmetry currents are reviewed. Both the N=8 and N=7 algebras admit unitary realizations in terms of a single boson and free fermions in 8 of Spin(7) and 7 of G_2, with the central charges c=26/5 and c=5, respectively. They also have realizations over the coset spaces SO(8)XU(1)/SO(7) and SO(7)X U(1)/G_2 for some fixed values of their central charges. The coset space SO(8)/SO(7) is the seven-sphere , whereas the space SO(7)/G_2 represents the seven…
An exact and general solution is presented for a previously open problem. We show that the superconformal R-symmetry of any 4d SCFT is exactly and uniquely determined by a maximization principle: it is the R-symmetry, among all possibilities, which (locally) maximizes the combination of 't Hooft anomalies a_{trial}(R) \equiv (9 Tr R^3-3 Tr R)/32. The maximal value of a_{trial} is then, by a result of Anselmi et. al., the central charge \it{a} of the SCFT. Our a_{trial} maximization principle almost immediately ensures that the central charge \it{a} decreases upon any RG flow, since relevant de…
