We consider the Symmetric Exclusion Process on a compact Riemannian manifold, as introduced in van Ginkel and Redig (2020). There it was shown that the hydrodynamic limit satisfies the heat equation. In this paper we study the equilibrium fluctuations around this hydrodynamic limit. We define the fluctuation fields as functionals acting on smooth functions on the manifold and we show that they converge in distribution in the path space to a generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This is done by proving tightness and by showing that the limiting fluctuations satisfy the corresponding martingale problem.
We consider the symmetric exclusion process on suitable random grids that approximate a compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that a class of random walks on these random grids converge to Brownian motion on the manifold. We then consider the empirical density field of the symmetric exclusion process and prove that it converges to the solution of the heat equation on the manifold.
We study the equilibrium fluctuations for a gradient exclusion process with conductances in random environments, which can be viewed as a central limit theorem for the empirical distribution of particles when the system starts from an equilibrium measure.
We prove an invariance principle for a tagged particle in a simple exclusion process out of equilibrium. The scaling limit is a time-inhomogeneous process of independent increments, related to the solution of a fractional heat equation.
We give bounds on the rate of convergence to equilibrium of the symmetric simple exclusion process in $\Z^d$. Our results include the existent results in the literature. We get better bounds and larger class of initial states via a unified approach. The method includes a comparison of the evolution of n interacting particles with n independent ones along the whole time trajectory.
We provide a complete description of the equilibrium fluctuations for diffusive symmetric exclusion processes with long jumps in contact with infinitely extended reservoirs and prove that they behave as generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with various boundary conditions, depending mainly on the strength of the reservoirs. On the way, we also give a general statement about uniqueness of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process originated by the microscopic dynamics of the underlying interacting particle systems and adapt it to our study.
We analyze the equilibrium fluctuations of the density, current and tagged particle in symmetric exclusion with a slow bond. The system evolves in the one-dimensional lattice and the jump rate is everywhere equal to one except at the slow bond where it is $αn^-β$, where $α,β\geq{0}$ and $n$ is the scaling parameter. Depending on the regime of $β$, we find three different behaviors for the limiting fluctuations whose covariances are explicitly computed. In particular, for the critical value $β=1$, starting a tagged particle near the slow bond, we obtain a family of gaussian processes indexed in…
We prove that the equilibrium fluctuations of the symmetric simple exclusion process in contact with slow boundaries is given by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with Dirichlet, Robin or Neumann boundary conditions depending on the range of the parameter that rules the slowness of the boundaries.
Juggler's exclusion process describes a system of particles on the positive integers where particles drift down to zero at unit speed. After a particle hits zero, it jumps into a randomly chosen unoccupied site. We model the system as a set-valued Markov process and show that the process is ergodic if the family of jump height distributions is uniformly integrable. In a special case where the particles jump according to a set-avoiding memoryless distribution, the process reaches its equilibrium in finite nonrandom time, and the equilibrium distribution can be represented as a Gibbs measure con…
We consider a one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process in contact with slowed reservoirs: at the left (resp. right) boundary, particles are either created or removed at rates given by $α/n$ or $(1-α)/n$ (resp. $β/n$ or $(1-β)/n$) where $α, β>0$ and $n$ is a scaling parameter. We obtain the non-equilibrium fluctuations and consequently the non-equilibrium stationary fluctuations.
We consider the simple exclusion process with $k$ particles on a segment of length $N$ performing random walks with transition $p>1/2$ to the right and $q=1-p$ to the left. We focus on the case where the asymmetry in the jump rates $b=p-q>0$ vanishes in the limit when $N$ and $k$ tend to infinity, and obtain sharp asymptotics for the mixing times of this sequence of Markov chains in the two cases where the asymmetry is either much larger or much smaller than $(\log k)/N$. We show that in the former case ($b \gg (\log k)/N$), the mixing time corresponds to the time needed to reach macroscopic e…
In this paper, we give a very accurate description of the way the simple exclusion process relaxes to equilibrium. Let $P_t$ denote the semi-group associated the exclusion on the circle with $2N$ sites and $N$ particles. For any initial condition $χ$, and for any $t\ge\frac{4N^2}{9π^2}\log N$, we show that the probability density $P_t(χ,\cdot)$ is given by an exponential tilt of the equilibrium measure by the main eigenfunction of the particle system. As $\frac{4N^2}{9π^2}\log N$ is smaller than the mixing time which is $\frac{N^2}{2π^2}\log N$, this allows to give a sharp description of the c…
We present the correct space of test functions for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes defined in \cite{fgn2}. Under these new spaces, an invariance with respect to a second order operator is shown, granting the existence and uniqueness of those processes. Moreover, we detail how to prove some properties of the semi-groups, which are required in the proof of uniqueness.
We prove the law of large numbers and invariance principles for the tagged particle in the asymmetric exclusion process with long jumps when the process starts from its equilibrium measure.

We prove Gaussian tail estimates for the transition probability of $n$ particles evolving as symmetric exclusion processes on $\bb Z^d$, improving results obtained in \cite{l}. We derive from this result a non-equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs principle for the symmetric simple exclusion process in dimension 1 starting from a product measure with slowly varying parameter.
We study the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process on the lattice $\{1, \dots,N\}$ with creation/annihilation at the boundaries. The boundary rates are time dependent and change on a slow time scale $N^{-a}$ with $a>0$. We prove that at the time scale $N^{1+a}$ the system evolves quasi-statically with a macroscopic density profile given by the entropy solution of the stationary Burgers equation with boundary densities changing in time, determined by the corresponding microscopic boundary rates. We consider two different types of boundary rates: the "Liggett boundaries" that corre…
Non-trivial linear bounds are obtained for the displacement of a random walk in a dynamic random environment given by a one-dimensional simple symmetric exclusion process in equilibrium. The proof uses an adaptation of multiscale renormalization methods of Kesten and Sidoravicius.
We study the last-passage growth model on the planar integer lattice with exponential weights. With boundary conditions that represent the equilibrium exclusion process as seen from a particle right after its jump we prove that the variance of the last-passage time in a characteristic direction is of order t^{2/3}. With more general boundary conditions that include the rarefaction fan case we show that the last-passage time fluctuations are still of order t^{1/3}, and also that the transversal fluctuations of the maximal path have order t^{2/3}. We adapt and then build on a recent study of Ham…
We examine the entropy of stationary nonequilibrium measures of boundary driven symmetric simple exclusion processes. In contrast with the Gibbs--Shannon entropy \cite{B, DLS2}, the entropy of nonequilibrium stationary states differs from the entropy of local equilibrium states.
We describe a resolvent-type method for estimating time integrals of time-dependent functionals of general right processes in equilibrium and apply this result in the case of weakly asymmetric one-dimensional simple exclusion showing a weak form of a replacement lemma for quadratic fluctuations.
We establish an invariance principle for a one-dimensional random walk in a dynamical random environment given by a speed-change exclusion process. The jump probabilities of the walk depend on the configuration of the exclusion in a finite box around the walker. The environment starts from equilibrium. After a suitable space-time rescaling, the random walk converges to a sum of two independent processes, a Brownian motion and a Gaussian process with stationary increments.
We consider the zero-range process with long jumps and in contact with infinitely many reservoirs in its non-equilibrium stationary state. We derive the hydrostatic limit and the Fick's law, which are a consequence of a relationship between the exclusion process and the zero-range process. We also obtain the large deviation principle for the empirical density, i.e. we compute the non-equilibrium free energy.
We consider one-dimensional exclusion processes with long jumps given by a transition probability of the form $p_n(\cdot)=s(\cdot)+γ_na(\cdot)$, such that its symmetric part $s(\cdot)$ is irreducible with finite variance and its antisymmetric part is absolutely bounded by $s(\cdot).$ We prove that under diffusive time scaling and strength of asymmetry $\sqrt n γ_n \to_{n\to\infty} b\neq 0$, the equilibrium density fluctuations are given by the unique energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation.
We derive the macroscopic laws that govern the evolution of the density of particles in the exclusion process on the Sierpinski gasket in the presence of a variable speed boundary. We obtain, at the hydrodynamics level, the heat equation evolving on the Sierpinski gasket with either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, depending on whether the reservoirs are fast or slow. For a particular strength of the boundary dynamics we obtain linear Robin boundary conditions. As for the fluctuations, we prove that, when starting from the stationary measure, namely the product Bernoulli measure in th…
We investigate propagation of perturbations of equilibrium states for a wide class of 1D interacting particle systems. The class of systems considered incorporates zero range, $K$-exclusion, mysanthropic, `bricklayers' models, and much more. We do not assume attractivity of the interactions. We apply Yau's relative entropy method rather than coupling arguments. The result is \emph{partial extension} of T. Seppäläinen's recent paper. For $0<β<1/5$ fixed, we prove that, rescaling microscopic space and time by $N$, respectively $N^{1+β}$, the macroscopic evolution of perturbations of microscopic …
We continue our study of intermittency for the parabolic Anderson model $\partial u/\partial t = κΔu + ξu$ in a space-time random medium $ξ$, where $κ$ is a positive diffusion constant, $Δ$ is the lattice Laplacian on $\Z^d$, $d \geq 1$, and $ξ$ is a simple symmetric exclusion process on $\Z^d$ in Bernoulli equilibrium. This model describes the evolution of a \emph{reactant} $u$ under the influence of a \emph{catalyst} $ξ$. In Gärtner, den Hollander and Maillard (2007) we investigated the behavior of the annealed Lyapunov exponents, i.e., the exponential growth rates as $t\to\infty$ of the suc…
We consider a one-dimensional continuous time random walk with transition rates depending on an underlying autonomous simple symmetric exclusion process starting out of equilibrium. This model represents an example of a random walk in a slowly non-uniform mixing dynamic random environment. Under a proper space-time rescaling in which the exclusion is speeded up compared to the random walk, we prove a hydrodynamic limit theorem for the exclusion as seen by this walk and we derive an ODE describing the macroscopic evolution of the walk. The main difficulty is the proof of a replacement lemma for…
We consider a one-dimensional simple symmetric exclusion process in equilibrium, constituting a dynamic random environment for a nearest-neighbor random walk that on occupied/vacant sites has two different local drifts to the right. We construct a renewal structure from which a LLN, a functional CLT and large deviation bounds for the random walk under the annealed measure follow. We further prove an Einstein relation under a suitable perturbation. A brief discussion on the topic of random walks in slowly mixing dynamic random environments is presented.
We study two different versions of the simple exclusion process on augmented Galton-Watson trees, the constant speed model and the varying speed model. In both cases, the simple exclusion process starts from an equilibrium distribution with non-vanishing particle density. Moreover, we assume to have initially a particle in the root, the tagged particle. We show for both models that the tagged particle has a positive linear speed and we give explicit formulas for the speeds.
We study the time that the simple exclusion process on the complete graph needs to reach equilibrium in terms of total variation distance. For the graph with n vertices and 1<<k<n/2 particles we show that the mixing time is of order (n/2)\log \min(k, \sqrt{n}), and that around this time, for any small positive epsilon the total variation distance drops from 1-epsilon to epsilon in a time window whose width is of order n (i.e. in a much shorter time). Our proof is purely probabilistic and self-contained.
We obtain the large scale limit of the fluctuations around its hydrodynamic limit of the density of particles of a weakly asymmetric exclusion process in dimension up to three. The proof is based upon a sharp estimate on the relative entropy of the law of the process with respect to product reference measures associated to the hydrodynamic limit profile, which holds in any dimension and is of independent interest. As a corollary of this entropy estimate, we obtain some quantitative bounds on the speed of convergence of the aforementioned hydrodynamic limit.
We study the large space and time scale behavior of a totally asymmetric, nearest-neighbor exclusion process in one dimension with random jump rates attached to the particles. When slow particles are sufficiently rare the system has a phase transition. At low densities there are no equilibrium distributions, and on the hydrodynamic scale the initial profile is transported rigidly. We elaborate this situation further by finding the correct order of the correction from the hydrodynamic limit, together with distributional bounds averaged over the disorder. We consider two settings, a macroscopica…
In this article we obtain the equilibrium fluctuations of a symmetric exclusion process in $\mathbb{Z}$ with long jumps. The transition probability of the jump from $x$ to $y$ is proportional to $|x-y|^{-γ-1}$. Here we restrict to the choice $γ\geq 2$ so that the system has a diffusive behavior. Moreover, when particles move between $\mathbb{Z}_{-}^{*}$ and $\mathbb N$, the jump rates are slowed down by a factor $αn^{-β}$, where $α>0$, $β\geq 0$ and $n$ is the scaling parameter. Depending on the values of $β$ and $γ$, we obtain several stochastic partial differential equations, corresponding t…
We look at a superposition of symmetric simple exclusion and Glauber dynamics in the discrete torus in dimension 1. For this model, we prove that the fluctuations around the hydrodynamic limit are described, in the diffusive scale, by an infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Our proof technique is an adaptation of Yau's Relative Entropy Method that is robust enough to be adapted to other exclusion models. To cut the technical details to a minimum, we assume that the process starts from a product measure with a custom-chosen density, for which the solution of the hydrodynamic equatio…
We investigate the long-term behavior of a random walker evolving on top of the simple symmetric exclusion process (SSEP) at equilibrium, in dimension one. At each jump, the random walker is subject to a drift that depends on whether it is sitting on top of a particle or a hole, so that its asymptotic behavior is expected to depend on the density $ρ\in [0, 1]$ of the underlying SSEP. Our first result is a law of large numbers (LLN) for the random walker for all densities $ρ$ except for at most two values $ρ_-, ρ_+ \in [0, 1]$. The asymptotic speed we obtain in our LLN is a monotone function of…
We consider the symmetric simple exclusion process evolving on the interval of length $n-1$ in contact with reservoirs of density $ρ\in (0,1)$ at the boundary. We use Yau's relative entropy method to show that if the initial measure is associated with a profile $u_0:[0,1] \to (0,1)$, then at explicit times $t^n(b)$ that depend on $u_0$, the distance to equilibrium, in total variation distance, converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a profile $\mathcal G(γe^{-b})$. The parameter $γ$ also depends on the initial profile $u_0$ and $\mathcal G(m)$ stands for the total variation distance $\|\mathcal N (m,…
We study equilibrium fluctuations for a class of totally asymmetric zero-range type interacting particle systems. As a main result, we show that density fluctuation of our process converges to the stationary energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. As a special case, microscopic system we consider here is related to $q$-totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes ($q$-TASEPs) and our scaling limit corresponds to letting the quantum parameter $q$ to be one.
Motivated by kinetically constrained interacting particle systems (KCM), we consider a reversible coalescing and branching simple exclusion process on a general finite graph $G=(V,E)$ dual to the biased voter model on $G$. Our main goal are tight bounds on its logarithmic Sobolev constant and relaxation time, with particular focus on the delicate slightly supercritical regime in which the equilibrium density of particles tends to zero as $|V|\rightarrow \infty$. Our results allow us to recover very directly and improve to $\ell^p$-mixing, $p\ge 2$, and to more general graphs, the mixing time r…
We compute the growth fluctuations in equilibrium of a wide class of deposition models. These models also serve as general frame to several nearest-neighbor particle jump processes, e.g. the simple exclusion or the zero range process, where our result turns to current fluctuations of the particles. We use martingale technique and coupling methods to show that, rescaled by time, the variance of the growth as seen by a deterministic moving observer has the form |V-C|*D, where V and C is the speed of the observer and the second class particle, respectively, and D is a constant connected to the eq…
This note proves an upper bound for the fluctuations of a second-class particle in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. The proof needs a lower tail estimate for the last-passage growth model associated with the exclusion process. A stronger estimate has been proved for the corresponding discrete time model, so we take the needed estimate as a hypothesis. The process is initially in local equilibrium with a slowly varying macroscopic profile. The macroscopic initial profile is smooth in a neighborhood of the origin where the second-class particle starts off, and the forward charact…
