In 1994, Erdős, Gyárfás and Łuczak posed the following problem: given disjoint vertex sets $V_1,\dots,V_n$ of size~$k$, with exactly one edge between any pair $V_i,V_j$, how large can $n$ be such that there will always be an independent transversal? They showed that the maximal $n$ is at most $(1+o(1))k^2$, by providing an explicit construction with these parameters and no independent transversal. They also proved a lower bound which is smaller by a $2e$-factor.
In this paper, we solve this problem by showing that their upper bound construction is best possible: if $n\le (1-o(1))k^2$, there will always be an independent transversal. In fact, this result is a very special case of a much more general theorem which concerns independent transversals in arbitrary partite graphs that are `locally sparse', meaning that the maximum degree between each pair of parts is relatively small. In this setting, Loh and Sudakov provided a global \emph{maximum} degree condition for the existence of an independent transversal. We show that this can be relaxed to an \emph{average} degree condition.
We can also use our new theorem to establish tight bounds for a more general version of the Erdős--Gyárfás--Łuczak problem and solve a conjecture of Yuster from 1997. This exploits a connection to the Turán numbers of complete bipartite graphs, which might be of independent interest.
We suggest and explore a matroidal version of the Brualdi - Ryser conjecture about Latin squares. We prove that any $n\times n$ matrix, whose rows and columns are bases of a matroid, has an independent partial transversal of length $\lceil2n/3\rceil$. We show that for any $n$, there exists such a matrix with a maximal independent partial transversal of length at most $n-1$.
Let G be a graph with maximum degree Δwhose vertex set is partitioned into parts V(G) = V_1 \cup ... \cup V_r. A transversal is a subset of V(G) containing exactly one vertex from each part V_i. If it is also an independent set, then we call it an independent transversal. The local degree of G is the maximum number of neighbors of a vertex v in a part V_i, taken over all choices of V_i and v \not \in V_i. We prove that for every fixed ε> 0, if all part sizes |V_i| >= (1+ε)Δand the local degree of G is o(Δ), then G has an independent transversal for sufficiently large Δ. This extends several pr…
An independent transversal of a graph $G$ with a vertex partition $\mathcal P$ is an independent set of $G$ intersecting each block of $\mathcal P$ in a single vertex. Wanless and Wood proved that if each block of $\mathcal P$ has size at least $t$ and the average degree of vertices in each block is at most $t/4$, then an independent transversal of $\mathcal P$ exists. We present a construction showing that this result is optimal: for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and sufficiently large $t$, there is a family of forests with vertex partitions whose block size is at least $t$, average degree of vertice…
A $[k,n,1]$-graph is a $k$-partite graph with parts of order $n$ such that the bipartite graph induced by any pair of parts is a matching. An independent transversal in such a graph is an independent set that intersects each part in a single vertex. A factor of independent transversals is a set of $n$ pairwise-disjoint independent transversals. Let $f(k)$ be the smallest integer $n_0$ such that every $[k,n,1]$-graph has a factor of independent transversals assuming $n \ge n_0$. Several known conjectures imply that for $k \ge 2$, $f(k)=k$ if $k$ is even and $f(k)=k+1$ if $k$ is odd. While a sim…
Let $G=(V, E)$ be a graph. A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is a {\it dominating set} of $G$ if every vertex in $V\setminus S$ is adjacent to a vertex of $S$. The {\it domination number} of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $G$. Furthermore, a dominating set $S$ is an {\it independent transversal dominating set} of $G$ if it intersects every maximum independent set of $G$. The {\it independent transversal domination number} of $G$, denoted by $γ_{it}(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum independent transversal dominating set of $G$. In 2012, Hamid initiated the s…
A fullerene graph is a cubic bridgeless plane graph with all faces of size 5 and 6. We show that that every fullerene graph on n vertices can be made bipartite by deleting at most sqrt{12n/5} edges, and has an independent set with at least n/2-sqrt{3n/5} vertices. Both bounds are sharp, and we characterise the extremal graphs. This proves conjectures of Doslic and Vukicevic, and of Daugherty. We deduce two further conjectures on the independence number of fullerene graphs, as well as a new upper bound on the smallest eigenvalue of a fullerene graph.
Rabern recently proved that any graph with omega >= (3/4)(Delta+1) contains a stable set meeting all maximum cliques. We strengthen this result, proving that such a stable set exists for any graph with omega > (2/3)(Delta+1). This is tight, i.e. the inequality in the statement must be strict. The proof relies on finding an independent transversal in a graph partitioned into vertex sets of unequal size.
We give an efficient algorithm that, given a graph $G$ and a partition $V_1,\ldots,V_m$ of its vertex set, finds either an independent transversal (an independent set $\{v_1,\ldots,v_m\}$ in $G$ such that $v_i\in V_i$ for each $i$), or a subset $\mathcal B$ of vertex classes such that the subgraph of $G$ induced by $\bigcup\mathcal B$ has a small dominating set. A non-algorithmic proof of this result has been known for a number of years and has been applied to solve many other problems. Thus we are able to give algorithmic versions of many of these applications, a few of which we describe expl…
Motivated both by recently introduced forms of list colouring and by earlier work on independent transversals subject to a local sparsity condition, we use the semi-random method to prove the following result. For any function $μ$ satisfying $μ(d)=o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$, there is a function $λ$ satisfying $λ(d)=d+o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$ such that the following holds. For any graph $H$ and any partition of its vertices into parts of size at least $λ$ such that (a) for each part the average over its vertices of degree to other parts is at most $d$, and (b) the maximum degree from a vertex to some o…
Let A be an m \times n matrix in which the entries of each row are all distinct. Drisko showed that, if m \ge 2n-1, then A has a transversal: a set of n distinct entries with no two in the same row or column. We generalize this to matrices with entries in a matroid. For such a matrix A, we show that if each row of A forms an independent set, then we can require the transversal to be independent as well. We determine the complexity of an algorithm based on the proof of this result. Lastly, we observe that m \ge 2n-1 appears to force the existence of not merely one but many transversals. We disc…
The NP-complete problem Feedback Vertex Set is that of deciding whether or not it is possible, for a given integer $k\geq 0$, to delete at most $k$ vertices from a given graph so that what remains is a forest. The variant in which the deleted vertices must form an independent set is called Independent Feedback Vertex Set and is also NP-complete. In fact, even deciding if an independent feedback vertex set exists is NP-complete and this problem is closely related to the $3$-Colouring problem, or equivalently, to the problem of deciding whether or not a graph has an independent odd cycle transve…
The DP-coloring problem is a generalization of the list-coloring problem in which the goal is to find an independent transversal in a certain topological cover of a graph $G$. In the online DP-coloring problem, the cover of $G$ is revealed one component at a time, and the independent transversal of the cover must be constructed in parts based on incomplete information. Kim, Kostochka, Li, and Zhu asked whether the chromatic numbers corresponding to these two graph coloring problems can have an arbitrarily large difference in a single graph. We answer this question in the affirmative by constru…
A paper by Cavenagh and Wanless diagnosed the possible intersection of any two transversals of the back circulant Latin square B_n, and used the result to completely determine the spectrum for 2-way k-homogeneous latin trades. We give a generalization of this problem for the intersection of μtransversals of B_n and provide a construction for this problem, as well as providing base designs for the construction in the cases μ= 3, 4 found by a computational search. This result is then applied to the problem of finding μ-way k-homogeneous Latin trades. We generalize this problem to the intersectio…
In this paper, we investigate the classes of matroid intersection admitting a solution for the problem of partitioning the ground set $E$ into $k$ common independent sets, where $E$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets in each of the two matroids. For this problem, we present a new approach building upon the generalized-polymatroid intersection theorem. We exhibit that this approach offers alternative proofs and unified understandings of previous results showing that the problem has a solution for the intersection of two laminar matroids and that of two matroids without $(k+1)$-spanned…
In this paper, we study the average size of independent (vertex) sets of a graph. This invariant can be regarded as the logarithmic derivative of the independence polynomial evaluated at $1$. We are specifically concerned with extremal questions. The maximum and minimum for general graphs are attained by the empty and complete graph respectively, while for trees we prove that the path minimises the average size of independent sets and the star maximises it. While removing a vertex does not always decrease the average size of independent sets, we prove that there always exists a vertex for whic…
We study the weighted induced bipartite subgraph problem (WIBSP). The goal of WIBSP is, given a graph and nonnegative weights for the nodes, to find a set W of nodes with the maximum total weight such that a subgraph induced by W is bipartite. WIBSP is also referred as to the graph bipartization problem or the odd cycle transversal problem. In this paper, we show that WIBSP can be reduced to the weighted independent set problem (WISP) where the number of nodes becomes twice and the maximum degree increase by 1. WISP is a well-studied combinatorial optimization problem. Thus, by using the reduc…
We prove an asymptotically tight lower bound on the average size of independent sets in a triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree $d$, showing that an independent set drawn uniformly at random from such a graph has expected size at least $(1+o_d(1)) \frac{\log d}{d}n$. This gives an alternative proof of Shearer's upper bound on the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$. We then prove that the total number of independent sets in a triangle-free graph with maximum degree $d$ is at least $\exp \left[\left(\frac{1}{2}+o_d(1) \right) \frac{\log^2 d}{d}n \right]$. The constant $1/2$ in the exponent…
Szemerédi's Theorem states that a set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman generalized this, showing that sets of integers with positive upper density contain arbitrarily long polynomial configurations; Szemerédi's Theorem corresponds to the linear case of the polynomial theorem. We focus on the case farthest from the linear case, that of rationally independent polynomials. We derive results in ergodic theory and in combinatorics for rationally independent polynomials, showing that their behavior differs sharply from t…
The maximum average degree $\mathrm{mad}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum average degree over all subgraphs of $G$. In this paper we prove that for every $G$ and positive integer $k$ such that $\mathrm{mad}(G) \ge k$ there exists $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that $\mathrm{mad}(G - S) \le \mathrm{mad}(G) - k$ and $G[S]$ is $(k-1)$-degenerate. Moreover, such $S$ can be computed in polynomial time. In particular there exists an independent set $I$ in $G$ such that $\mathrm{mad}(G-I) \le \mathrm{mad}(G)-1$ and an induced forest $F$ such that $\mathrm{mad}(G-F) \le \mathrm{mad}(G) - 2$.
