We construct the complete set of orders of growth and we define on it the generalized entropy of a dynamical systems. With this object we provide a framework where we can study the separation of orbits of a map beyond the scope of exponential growth. We are going to show that this construction is particularly useful to study families of dynamical systems with vanishing entropy. Moreover, we are going to see that the space of orders of growth in which orbits are separated is wilder than expected. This is going to be achieved with different types of examples.
Measure-theoretic and topological entropy are classical invariants in the theory of dynamical systems. There are several recently developed entropy type invariants for systems of sub-exponential growth: sequence entropy, slow entropy, Kakutani invariants, scaled entropy, entropy dimensions and entropy convergence rate. They measure the complexity of zero entropy systems by different approaches. These new invariants and corresponding new theories have many applications and interesting properties. This survey paper gives a comprehensive exposition of the slow entropy theory and also discusses so…
We study the connection between the Lyapunov exponents and the volume growth of boundary distortion of regions in the phase space of the dynamical system.
We show that the metric entropy of a $C^1$ diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting and the dominating bundle uniformly expanding is bounded from above by the integrated volume growth of the dominating (expanding) bundle plus the maximal Lyapunov exponent from the dominated bundle multiplied by its dimension. We also discuss different types of volume growth that can be associated with an expanding foliation and relationships between them, specially when there exists a closed form non-degenerate on the foliation. Some consequences for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms are presented.
Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.
We prove that a generic p.m.p. action of a countable amenable group $G$ has scaling entropy that can not be dominated by a given rate of growth. As a corollary, we obtain that there does not exist a topological action of $G$ for which the set of ergodic invariant measures coincides with the set of all ergodic p.m.p. $G$-systems of entropy zero. We also prove that a generic action of a residually finite amenable group has scaling entropy that can not be bounded from below by a given sequence. We also show an example of an amenable group that has such lower bound for every free p.m.p. action.
We consider $C^2$ Fréchet differentiable mappings of Banach spaces leaving invariant compactly supported Borel probability measures, and study the relation between entropy and volume growth for a natural notion of volume defined on finite dimensional subspaces. SRB measures are characterized as exactly those measures for which entropy is equal to volume growth on unstable manifolds, equivalently the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents of the map. In addition to numerous difficulties incurred by our infinite-dimensional setting, a crucial aspect to the proof is the technical point that the volum…
Let $f$ be a $C^{1}$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold $M$ admitting a partially hyperbolic splitting $TM=E^{s}\oplus_{\prec} E^{1}\oplus_{\prec} E^{2}\cdots \oplus_{\prec}E^{l}\oplus_{\prec} E^{u}$ where $E^{s}$ is uniformly contracting, $E^{u}$ is uniformly expanding and $\dim E^{i}=1,\,1\leq i\leq l.$ We prove an entropy formula w.r.t. the volume growth rate of subspaces in the tangent bundle: $$h_{\rm{top}}(f)=\lim_{n\to+\infty}\frac{1}{n}\log\int\max_{V\subset T_{x}M}|\det Df_{x}^{n}|_{V}|\,d x.$$
We estimate from below the topological entropy of the generalized Bunimovich stadium billiards. We do it for long billiard tables, and find the limit of estimates as the length goes to infinity.
We consider an isomorphism invariant for measure-preserving systems - types of generalized entropy convergence rates. We show the connections of this invariant with the types of Shannon entropy convergence rates. In the case when they differ we show several facts for aperiodic, completely ergodic and rank one systems. We use this concept to distinguish some measure-preserving systems with zero entropy.
In this paper, we consider certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with center of arbitrary dimension and obtain continuity properties of the topological entropy under $C^1$ perturbations. The systems considered have subexponential growth in the center direction and uniform exponential growth along the unstable foliation. Our result applies to partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which are Lyapunov stable in the center direction. It applies to another important class of systems which do have subexponential growth in the center direction, for which we develop a technique to use exponential…
The aim of this paper is to state and prove polynomial analogues of the classical Manning inequality relating the topological entropy of a geodesic flow with the growth rate of the volume of balls in the universal covering. To this aim we use two numerical conjugacy invariants, the {\em strong polynomial entropy $h_{pol}$} and the {\em weak polynomial entropy $h_{pol}^*$}. Both are infinite when the topological entropy is positive and they satisfy $h_{pol}^*\leq h_{pol}$. We first prove that the growth rate of the volume of balls is bounded above by means of the strong polynomial entropy and w…
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of hyperbolic type, i.e M is a manifold admitting another metric of strictly negative curvature. In this paper we study the geodesic flow restricted to the set of geodesics which are minimal on the universal covering. In particular for surfaces we show that the topological entropy of the minimal geodesics coincides with the volume entropy of (M, g) generalizing work of Freire and Mane.
Expansive algebraic Z^d-actions corresponding to ideals are characterized by the property that the complex variety of the ideal is disjoint from the multiplicative unit torus. For such actions it is known that the limit for the growth rate of periodic points exists and equals the entropy of the action. We extend this result to actions for which the complex variety intersects the multiplicative torus in a finite set. The main technical tool is the use of homoclinic points which decay rapidly enough to be summable.
We obtain geometric upper bounds on the topological entropy of generalized polygon exchange transformations. As an application of our results, we show that billiards in polygons and rational polytopes have zero topological entropy.
We give a detailed description in 1-D the growth of Sobolev norms for time dependent linear generalized KdV-type equations on the circle. For most initial data, the growth of Sobolev norms is polynomial in time for fixed analytic potential with admissible growth. If the initial data are given in a fixed smaller function space with more strict admissible growth conditions for $V(x,t)$ , then the growth of previous Sobolev norms is at most logarithmic in time.
In connection with the Entropy Conjecture it is known that the topological entropy of a continuous graph map is bounded from below by the spectral radius of the induced map on the first homology group. We show that in the case of a piecewise monotone graph map, its topological entropy is equal precisely to the maximum of the mentioned spectral radius and the exponential growth rate of the number of periodic points of negative type. This nontrivially extends a result of Milnor and Thurston on piecewise monotone interval maps. For this purpose we generalize the concept of Milnor-Thurston zeta fu…
Let F be a non-Archimedean local field and let E be a finite extension of F. Let G be a split semisimple F group. We discuss how to compare volumes on the Bruhat-Tits buildings B_E and B_F of G(E) and G(F) respectively.
We introduce the notion of intrinsic semilattice entropy $\widetilde h$ in the category $\mathcal L_{qm}$ of generalized quasimetric semilattices and contractive homomorphisms. By using appropriate categories $\mathfrak X$ and functors $F:\mathfrak X\to\mathcal L_{qm}$ we find specific known entropies $\widetilde h_\mathfrak X$ on $\mathfrak X$ as intrinsic functorial entropies, that is, as $\widetilde h_\mathfrak X=\widetilde h\circ F$. These entropies are the intrinsic algebraic entropy, the algebraic and the topological entropies for locally linearly compact vector spaces, the topological e…
