This paper is concerned with volume-constrained minimization problems derived from Gamow's liquid drop model for the atomic nucleus, involving the competition of a perimeter term and repulsive nonlocal potentials. We consider a large class of potentials, given by general radial nonnegative kernels which are integrable on $\mathbb{R}^n$, such as Bessel potentials, and study the behavior of the problem for large masses (i.e., volumes). Contrarily to the small mass case, where the nonlocal term becomes negligible compared to the perimeter, here the nonlocal term explodes compared to it. However, using the integrability of those kernels, we rewrite the problem as the minimization of the difference between the classical perimeter and a nonlocal perimeter, which converges to a multiple of the classical perimeter as the mass goes to infinity. Renormalizing to a fixed volume, we show that, if the first moment of the kernels is smaller than an explicit threshold, the problem admits minimizers of arbitrarily large mass, which contrasts with the usual case of Riesz potentials. In addition, we prove that, any sequence of minimizers converges to the ball as the mass goes to infinity. Finally, we study the stability of the ball, and show that our threshold on the first moment of the kernels is sharp in the sense that large balls go from stable to unstable. A direct consequence of the instability of large balls above this threshold is that there exist nontrivial compactly supported kernels for which the problems admit minimizers which are not balls, that is, symmetry breaking occurs.
We consider the volume-constrained minimization of the sum of the perimeter and the Riesz potential. We add an external potential of the form $\|x\|^β$ that provides the existence of a minimizer for any volume constraint, and we study the geometry of big minimizers. Then we provide a numerical method to adress this variational problem.
We characterize the volume-constrained minimizers of a nonlocal free energy given by the difference of the $t$-perimeter and the $s$-perimeter, with $s$ smaller than $t$. Exploiting the quantitative fractional isoperimetric inequality, we show that balls are the unique minimizers if the volume is sufficiently small, depending on $t-s$, while the existence vs. nonexistence of minimizers for large volumes remains open. We also consider the corresponding isoperimetric problem and prove existence and regularity of minimizers for all $s,\,t$. When $s=0$ this problem reduces to the fractional isoper…
We study a variational problem modeling the behavior at equilibrium of charged liquid drops under convexity constraint. After proving well-posedness of the model, we show C 1,1-regularity of minimizers for the Coulombic interaction in dimension two. As a by-product we obtain that balls are the unique minimizers for small charge. Eventually, we study the asymptotic behavior of minimizers, as the charge goes to infinity.
Building on work of Mondino-Scharrer, we show that among closed, smoothly embedded surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of genus $g$ and given isoperimetric ratio $v$, there exists one with minimum bending energy $\mathcal{W}$. We do this by gluing $g+1$ small catenoidal bridges to the bigraph of a singular solution for the linearized Willmore equation $Δ(Δ+2)φ=0$ on the $(g+1)$-punctured sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ to construct a comparison surface of genus $g$ with arbitrarily small isoperimetric ratio $v\in (0, 1)$ and $\mathcal{W} < 8π$.
We study an isoperimetric problem described by a functional that consists of the standard Gaussian perimeter and the norm of the barycenter. This second term has a repulsive effect, and it is in competition with the perimeter. Because of that, in general the solution is not the half-space. We characterize all the minimizers of this functional, when the volume is close to one, by proving that the minimizer is either the half-space or the symmetric strip, depending on the strength of the repulsive term. As a corollary, we obtain that the symmetric strip is the solution of the Gaussian isoperimet…
We study a geometric variational problem for sets in the plane in which the perimeter and a regularized dipolar interaction compete under a mass constraint. In contrast to previously studied nonlocal isoperimetric problems, here the nonlocal term asymptotically localizes and contributes to the perimeter term to leading order. We establish existence of generalized minimizers for all values of the dipolar strength, mass and regularization cutoff and give conditions for existence of classical minimizers. For subcritical dipolar strengths we prove that the limiting functional is a renormalized per…
We give a detailed description of the geometry of single droplet patterns in a nonlocal isoperimetric problem. In particular we focus on the sharp interface limit of the Ohta-Kawasaki free energy for diblock copolymers, regarded as a paradigm for those energies modeling physical systems characterized by a competition between short and a long-range interactions. Exploiting fine properties of the regularity theory for minimal surfaces, we extend previous partial results in different directions and give robust tools for the geometric analysis of more complex patterns.
We prove a quantitative version of the isoperimetric inequality for a non local perimeter of Minkowski type. We also apply this result to study isoperimetric problems with repulsive interaction terms, under convexity constraints. We show existence of minimizers, and we describe the shape of minimizers in certain parameter regimes.
We consider a class of nonlocal generalized perimeters which includes fractional perimeters and Riesz type potentials. We prove a general isoperimetric inequality for such functionals, and we discuss some applications. In particular we prove existence of an isoperimetric profile, under suitable assumptions on the interaction kernel.
The existence of minimizers in the fractional isoperimetric problem with multiple volume constraints is proved, together with a partial regularity result.
This paper is concerned with a study of the classical isoperimetric problem modified by an addition of a non-local repulsive term. We characterize existence, non-existence and radial symmetry of the minimizers as a function of mass in the situation where the non-local term is generated by a kernel given by an inverse power of the distance. We prove that minimizers of this problem exist for sufficiently small masses and are given by disks with prescribed mass below a certain threshold, when the interfacial term in the energy is dominant. At the same time, we prove that minimizers fail to exist …
We consider isoperimetric problem with a nonlocal repulsive term given by the Newtonian potential. We prove that regular critical sets of the functional are analytic. This optimal regularity holds also for critical sets of the Ohta-Kawasaki functional. We also prove that when the strength of the nonlocal part is small the ball is the only possible stable critical set.
We discuss the local minimality of certain configurations for a nonlocal isoperimetric problem used to model microphase separation in diblock copolymer melts. We show that critical configurations with positive second variation are local minimizers of the nonlocal area functional and, in fact, satisfy a quantitative isoperimetric inequality with respect to sets that are $L^1$-close. The link with local minimizers for the diffuse-interface Ohta-Kawasaki energy is also discussed. As a byproduct of the quantitative estimate, we get new results concerning periodic local minimizers of the area funct…
We study a two-dimensional ternary inhibitory system derived as a sharp-interface limit of the Nakazawa-Ohta density functional theory of triblock copolymers. This free energy functional combines an interface energy favoring micro-domain growth with a Coulomb-type long range interaction energy which prevents micro-domains from unlimited spreading. Here we consider a limit in which two species are vanishingly small, but interactions are correspondingly large to maintain a nontrivial limit. In this limit two energy levels are distinguished: the highest order limit encodes information on the geom…
This paper is the continuation of [H. Knüpfer and C. B. Muratov, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. (2012, to be published)]. We investigate the classical isoperimetric problem modified by an addition of a non-local repulsive term generated by a kernel given by an inverse power of the distance. In this work, we treat the case of general space dimension. We obtain basic existence results for minimizers with sufficiently small masses. For certain ranges of the exponent in the kernel we also obtain non-existence results for sufficiently large masses, as well as a characterization of minimizers as balls for…
In this article, we consider the (double) minimization problem $$\min\left\{P(E;Ω)+λW_p(E,F):~E\subseteqΩ,~F\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d,~\lvert E\cap F\rvert=0,~ \lvert E\rvert=\lvert F\rvert=1\right\},$$ where $p\geqslant 1$, $Ω$ is a (possibly unbounded) domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $P(E;Ω)$ denotes the relative perimeter of $E$ in $Ω$ and $W_p$ denotes the $p$-Wasserstein distance. When $Ω$ is unbounded and $d\geqslant 3$, it is an open problem proposed by Buttazzo, Carlier and Laborde in the paper ON THE WASSERSTEIN DISTANCE BETWEEN MUTUALLY SINGULAR MEASURES. We prove the existence of minimizers …
For $Ω_\e=(0,\e)\times (0,1)$ a thin rectangle, we consider minimization of the two-dimensional nonlocal isoperimetric problem given by \[ \inf_u E^γ_{Ω_\e}(u)\] where \[ E^γ_{Ω_\e}(u):= P_{Ω_\e}(\{u(x)=1\})+γ\int_{Ω_\e}\abs{\nabla{v}}^2\,dx \] and the minimization is taken over competitors $u\in BV(Ω_\e;\{\pm 1\})$ satisfying a mass constraint $\fint_{Ω_\e}u=m$ for some $m\in (-1,1)$. Here $P_{Ω_\e}(\{u(x)=1\})$ denotes the perimeter of the set $\{u(x)=1\}$ in $Ω_\e$, $\fint$ denotes the integral average and $v$ denotes the solution to the Poisson problem \[ -Δv=u-m\;\mbox{in}\;Ω_\e,\quad\nab…
We consider a nonlocal isoperimetric problem defined in the whole space $\R^N$, whose nonlocal part is given by a Riesz potential with exponent $α\in(0, N-1)$. We show that critical configurations with positive second variation are local minimizers and satisfy a quantitative inequality with respect to the $L^1$-norm. This criterion provides the existence of a (explicitly determined) critical threshold determining the interval of volumes for which the ball is a local minimizer, and allows to address several global minimality issues.
We consider a variational problem related to the shape of charged liquid drops at equilibrium. We show that this problem never admits global minimizers with respect to $L^1$ perturbations preserving the volume. This leads us to study it in more regular classes of competitors, for which we show existence of minimizers. We then prove that the ball is the unique solution for sufficiently small charges.
We address small volume-fraction asymptotic properties of a nonlocal isoperimetric functional with a confinement term, derived as the sharp interface limit of a variational model for self-assembly of diblock copolymers under confinement by nanoparticle inclusion. We introduce a small parameter $η$ to represent the size of the domains of the minority phase, and study the resulting droplet regime as $η\to 0$. By considering confinement densities which are spatially variable and attain a nondegenerate maximum, we present a two-stage asymptotic analysis wherein a separation of length scales is cap…
In this work we address the question of the existence of nonradial domains inside a nonconvex cone for which a mixed boundary overdetermined problem admits a solution. Our approach is variational, and consists in proving the existence of nonradial minimizers, under a volume constraint, of the associated torsional energy functional. In particular we give a condition on the domain $D$ on the sphere spanning the cone which ensures that the spherical sector is not a minimizer. Similar results are obtained for the relative isoperimetric problem in nonconvex cones.

In this paper we consider a non-local problem for a Laplace operator in a multidimensional bounded symmetric domain. The investigated problem is an analogue of the classical periodic boundary value problems in the case of non-rectangular domain. We prove self-adjointness of the problem and show a method of constructing eigenfunctions. We obtain an analogue of the Rayleigh type inequality and some spectral inequalities for the first eigenvalue of the nonlocal problem.
In this paper we establish optimal isoperimetric inequalities for a nonlocal perimeter adapted to the fractional powers of a class of Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck operators which are of interest in physics. These operators are very degenerate and do not possess a variational structure. The prototypical example was introduced by Kolmogorov in his 1938 paper on brownian motion and the theory of gases. Our work has been influenced by ideas of M. Ledoux in the local case.
We prove the stability of the ball as global minimizer of an attractive shape functional under volume constraint, by means of mass transportation arguments. The stability exponent is $1/2$ and it is sharp. Moreover, we use such stability result together with the quantitative (possibly fractional) isoperimetric inequality to prove that the ball is a global minimizer of a shape functional involving both an attractive and a repulsive term with a sufficiently large fixed volume and with a suitable (possibly fractional) perimeter penalization.
We study a non local approximation of the Gaussian perimeter, proving the Gamma convergence to the local one. Surprisingly, in contrast with the local setting, the halfspace turns out to be a volume constrained stationary point if and only if the boundary hyperplane passes through the origin. In particular, this implies that Ehrhard symmetrization can in general increase the considered non local Gaussian perimeter.
This paper provides a quantitative version of the recent result of Knüpfer and Muratov ({\it Commun. Pure Appl. Math.} {\bf 66} (2013), 1129--1162) concerning the solutions of an extension of the classical isoperimetric problem in which a non-local repulsive term involving Riesz potential is present. There it was shown that in two space dimensions the minimizer of the considered problem is either a ball or does not exist, depending on whether or not the volume constraint lies in an explicit interval around zero, provided that the Riesz kernel decays sufficiently slowly. Here we give an explici…
We study an isoperimetric problem the energy of which contains the perimeter of a set, Coulomb repulsion of the set with itself, and attraction of the set to a background nucleus as a point charge with charge $Z$. For the variational problem with constrained volume $V$, our main result is that the minimizer does not exist if $V - Z$ is larger than a constant multiple of $\max(Z^{2/3}, 1)$. The main technical ingredients of our proof are a uniform density lemma and electrostatic screening arguments.
We prove a relative isoperimetric inequality in the plane, when the perimeter is defined with respect to a convex, positively homogeneous function of degree one, and characterize the minimizers.
In this paper, we investigate the minimization of a functional in which the usual perimeter is competing with a nonlocal singular term comparable (but not necessarily equal to) a fractional perimeter. The motivation for this problem is a cell motility model introduced in some previous work by the first author. We establish several facts about global minimizers with a volume constraint. In particular we prove that minimizers exist and are radially symmetric for small mass, while minimizers cannot be radially symmetric for large mass. For large mass, we prove that the minimizing sequences either…
We develop a theory of existence of minimizers of energy functionals in vectorial problems based on a nonlocal gradient under Dirichlet boundary conditions. The model shares many features with the peridynamics model and is also applicable to nonlocal solid mechanics, especially nonlinear elasticity. This nonlocal gradient was introduced in an earlier work, inspired by Riesz' fractional gradient, but suitable for bounded domains. The main assumption on the integrand of the energy is polyconvexity. Thus, we adapt the corresponding results of the classical case to this nonlocal context, notably, …
We consider the minimization of an energy functional given by the sum of a crystalline perimeter and a nonlocal interaction of Riesz type, under volume constraint. We show that, in the small mass regime, if the Wulff shape of the anisotropic perimeter has certain symmetry properties, then it is the unique global minimizer of the total energy. In dimension two this applies to convex polygons which are reflection symmetric with respect to the bisectors of the angles. We further prove a rigidity result for the structure of (local) minimizers in two dimensions.
We consider a non-local isoperimetric problem with a repulsive Coulombic term. In dimension three this corresponds to the Gamow's famous liquid drop model. We show that whenever the mass is small the ball is the unique minimizer of the problem. The proof is based on a strong version of a quantitative isoperimetric inequality.
On the two dimensional sphere, we consider axisymmetric critical points of an isoperimetric problem perturbed by a long-range interaction term. When the parameter controlling the nonlocal term is sufficiently large, we prove the existence of a local minimizer with arbitrary many interfaces in the axisymmetric class of admissible functions. These local minimizers in this restricted class are shown to be critical points in the broader sense (i.e., with respect to all perturbations). We then explore the rigidity, due to curvature effects, in the criticality condition via several quantitative resu…
In this article we establish $C^{3,α}$-regularity of the reduced boundary of stationary points of a nonlocal isoperimetric problem in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, stationary points satisfy the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation classically on the reduced boundary. Moreover, we show that the singular set has zero $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. This complements the results in Choksi & Sternberg, in which the Euler-Lagrange equation was derived under the assumption of $C^2$-regularity of the topological boundary and the results in Sternberg & Topaloglu in which the …
We consider the nonexistence of minimizers for the energy containing a nonlocal perimeter with a general kernel $K$, a Riesz potential, and a background potential in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\geq2$ under the volume constraint. We show that the energy has no minimizer for a sufficiently large mass under suitable assumptions on $K$. The proof is based on the partition of a minimizer and the comparison of the sum of the energy for each part with the energy for the original configuration. This strategy is shown in [R.A. Frank, R. Killip, P.T. Nam, 2016] and [D.A. La Manna, 2018]
Motivated by Gamow's liquid drop model in the large mass regime, we consider an isoperimetric problem in which the standard perimeter $P(E)$ is replaced by $P(E)-γP_\varepsilon(E)$, with $0<γ<1$ and $P_\varepsilon$ a nonlocal energy such that $P_\varepsilon(E)\to P(E)$ as $\varepsilon$ vanishes. We prove that unit area minimizers are disks for $\varepsilon>0$ small enough. More precisely, we first show that in dimension $2$, minimizers are necessarily convex, provided that $\varepsilon$ is small enough. In turn, this implies that minimizers have nearly circular boundaries, that is, their bound…
We prove a generalization of Reifenberg's isoperimetric inequality. The main result of this paper is used to establish existence of a minimizer for an anisotropically-weighted area functional among a collection of surfaces which satisfies a set of axioms, namely being closed under certain deformations and Hausdorff limits. This problem is known as the axiomatic Plateau problem.
We consider the minimization of an energy functional given by the sum of a density perimeter and a nonlocal interaction of Riesz type with exponent $α$, under volume constraint, where the strength of the nonlocal interaction is controlled by a parameter $γ$. We show that for a wide class of density functions the energy admits a minimizer for any value of $γ$. Moreover these minimizers are bounded. For monomial densities of the form $|x|^p$ we prove that when $γ$ is sufficiently small the unique minimizer is given by the ball of fixed volume. In contrast with the constant density case, here the…
We consider a small random perturbation of the energy functional $$ [u]^2_{H^s(Λ, R^d)} + \int_ΛW(u(x)) dx $$ for $s \in (0,1),$ where the non-local part $ [u]^2_{H^s(Λ,R^d)}$ denotes the total contribution from $Λ\subset R^d$ in the $H^s (R^d)$ Gagliardo semi-norm of $u$ and $W$ is a double well potential. We show that there exists, as $Λ$ invades $ R^d$, for almost all realizations of the random term a minimizer under compact perturbations, which is unique when $d=2$, $s \in (\frac 12,1)$ and when $d=1$, $s \in [\frac 14, 1).$ This uniqueness is a consequence of the randomness. When the rand…
In this paper we consider minimizers for nonlocal energy functionals generalizing elastic energies that are connected with the theory of peridynamics \cite{Silling2000} or nonlocal diffusion models \cite{Rossi}. We derive nonlocal versions of the Euler-Lagrange equations under two sets of growth assumptions for the integrand. Existence of minimizers is shown for integrands with joint convexity (in the function and nonlocal gradient components). By using the convolution structure we show regularity of solutions for certain Euler-Lagrange equations. No growth assumptions are needed for the exist…
We explore the possibility of modifying the classical Gauss free energy functional used in capillarity theory by considering surface tension energies of nonlocal type. The corresponding variational principles lead to new equilibrium conditions which are compared to the mean curvature equation and Young's law found in classical capillarity theory. As a special case of this family of problems we recover a nonlocal relative isoperimetric problem of geometric interest.
In 1989 Almgren and Lieb proved a rearrangement inequality for the Sobolev spaces of fractional order $W^{s,p}$. The case $p = 2$ of their result implies the nonlocal isoperimetric inequality \[ \frac{P_s(E)}{|E|^{\frac{N-2s}N}} \ge \frac{P_s(B_1)}{|B_1|^{\frac{N-2s}N}},\ \ \ \ \ \ \ 0<s<1/2, \] where $P_s$ indicates the fractional $s$-perimeter, and $B_1$ is the unit ball in $\RN$. In this note we explicitly compute the best constant, and show that for any $0<s<1/2$, one has \[ \frac{P_s(B_1)}{|B_1|^{\frac{N-2s}N}} = \frac{N π^{\frac N2 + s} \G(1-2s)}{s \G(\frac N2+1)^{\frac{2s}N} \G(1-s)\G(\…
We prove an isoperimetric inequality of the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn type for a nonlinear generalization of the first twisted Dirichlet eigenvalue. More precisely, we show that the minimizer among sets of given volume is the union of two equal balls.
In this paper we prove the uniqueness and radial symmetry of minimizers for variational problems that model several phenomena. The uniqueness is a consequence of the convexity of the functional. The main technique is Fourier transform of tempered distributions.
The minimizers of the anisotropic fractional isoperimetric inequality with respect to the convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are shown to be equivalent to star bodies whenever $K$ is strictly convex and unconditional. From this a Pólya-Szegö principle for anisotropic fractional seminorms is derived by using symmetrization with respect to star bodies.
We consider a scale invariant functional involving the anisotropic $p-$momentum, the anisotropic perimeter and the volume. We show that the Wulff shape, associated with the Finsler norm $F$ considered and centered at the origin, is the unique minimizer of the anisotropic functional taken into consideration among all bounded convex sets.
We study the regularity of solutions to a nonlocal variational problem, which is related to the image denoising model, and we show that, in two dimensions, minimizers have the same Hölder regularity as the original image. More precisely, if the datum is (locally) $β$-Hölder continuous for some $β\in (1-s,\,1]$, where $s \in (0,1)$ is a parameter related to the nonlocal operator, we prove that the solution is also $β$-Hölder continuous.
