We study long-term radio/X-ray correlations in Cyg X-1. We find the persistent existence of a compact radio jet in its soft state. This represents a new phenomenon in black-hole binaries, in addition to compact jets in the hard state and episodic ejections of ballistic blobs in the intermediate state. While the radio emission in the hard state is strongly correlated with both the soft and hard X-rays, the radio flux in the soft state is not directly correlated with the flux of the dominant disk blackbody in soft X-rays, but instead it is lagged by about a hundred days. We interpret the lag as occurring in the process of advection of the magnetic flux from the donor through the accretion disk. On the other hand, the soft-state radio flux is very tightly correlated with the hard X-ray, 15--50 keV, flux without a measurable lag and at the same rms. This implies that the X-ray emitting disk corona and the soft-state jet are powered by the same process, probably magnetically.
In this contribution we model the non-thermal emission (from radio to gamma-rays) produced in the compact (and recently detected) colliding wind region in the multiple stellar system Cyg OB2 #5. We focus our study on the detectability of the produced gamma-rays.
Recent ultrahigh energy gamma-ray observations by the HAWC up to 100 TeV and LHAASO observatories up to 1.4 PeV energies from the direction of Fermi-LAT 4FGL source 4FGL J2028.6+4110e (Cygnus Cocoon), are indicative of a hadronic origin over a leptonic process for their creation. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has reported IceCube-201120A, a neutrino event coming from the same direction, suggesting that the Cygnus Cocoon may correspond to one of the most plausible sources of high-energy cosmic rays. The apparent relationship of the neutrino event with the observed ultra high energy gamma-ray…
The microquasar Cygnus X-3 was detected at high energies by the gamma-ray space telescopes AGILE and Fermi. The gamma-ray emission is transient, modulated with the orbital period and seems related to major radio flares, i.e. to the relativistic jet. The GeV gamma-ray flux can be substantially attenuated by internal absorption with the ambient X-rays. In this study, we examine quantitatively the effect of pair production in Cygnus X-3 and put constraints on the location of the gamma-ray source. Cygnus X-3 exhibits complex temporal and spectral patterns in X-rays. During gamma-ray flares, the X-…
Gamma-ray observations of microquasars at high and very-high energies can provide valuable information of the acceleration processes inside the jets, the jet-environment interaction and the disk-jet coupling. Two high-mass microquasars have been deeply studied to shed light on these aspects: Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3. Both systems display the canonical hard and soft X-ray spectral states of black hole transients, where the radiation is dominated by non-thermal emission from the corona and jets and by thermal emission from the disk, respectively. Here, we report on the detection of Cygnus X-1 a…
Microquasars have been expected to emit high energy gamma-rays due to their general similarities to the gamma-ray emitting blazars (evidences of relativistic jets, non-thermal radio to X-ray emission). In fact, the first source of this type, Cyg X-3, has been recently unambiguously discovered by the satellite telescopes. We study the features of the gamma-ray radiation produced in these sources by relativistic electrons, accelerated in the inner part of the jet. The electrons initiate an Inverse Compton e^\pm pair cascade in the radiation field of the accretion disk. Due to the anisotropy of t…
The compact X-ray binary system Cyg X-3 has been recently discovered as a source of GeV gamma-rays by the AGILE and the {\it Fermi} satellites. It shows emission features in the GeV gamma-rays similar to other gamma-ray binaries which were also observed in the TeV gamma-rays (LS 5039 and LSI +61 303). The question appears whether Cyg X-3 can be also detected in the TeV gamma-rays by the Cherenkov telescopes. Here we discuss this problem in detail based on the anisotropic inverse Compton (IC) e-p pair cascade model successfully applied to TeV gamma-ray binaries. We calculate the gamma-ray light…
The study of $γ$-ray emission from galactic sources such as supernova remnants (SNR) may provide key insights into their potential role as accelerators of cosmic rays up to the knee ($\sim 10^{15}$ eV). The VERITAS Observatory is sensitive to galactic and extragalactic $γ$-ray sources in the 100 GeV to 30 TeV energy range. We report here on VERITAS observations of the vicinity of the cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays reported by Fermi, which lies between potential accelerators in the Cygnus OB2 association and the $γ$-Cygni SNR. A particular focus is placed on the source VER J2019 +407…
The Cygnus region hosts the most conspicuous star-forming region close to the Sun, embedded in a giant complex of molecular clouds in the Local Arm. We present an analysis of the Fermi-LAT observations of Cygnus intended to probe the cosmic-ray and interstellar-matter content of the region. From gamma-ray data we estimate a total of (8 +5 -1) x 10^6 solar masses of interstellar gas in the complex at a distance of 1.4 kpc. The gamma-ray emission from the atomic gas supports the average HI spin temperature derived from radio absorption/emission pairs to estimate its column densities. The X(CO)=N…
The microquasar V404 Cygni (also known as GS 2023+338) was previously reported to have weak GeV gamma-ray emission in sub-day time periods during its 2015 outburst. In order to provide more detailed information at the high energy range for this black hole binary system, we conduct analysis to the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). Both LAT database and source catalog used are the latest. In addition to the previously reported detection at the peak of the 2015 outburst, we find possible detection ($\sim 4σ$) of the source durin…
We study orbital modulation of X-rays from Cyg X-3, using data from Swift, INTEGRAL and RXTE. Using the wealth of the presently available data and an improved averaging method, we obtain energy-dependent folded and averaged light curves with unprecedented accuracy. We find that above ~5 keV, the modulation depth decreases with the increasing energy, which is consistent with the modulation being caused by both bound-free absorption and Compton scattering in the stellar wind of the donor, with minima corresponding to the highest optical depth, which occurs around the superior conjunction. We fin…
High energy gamma-rays have been detected from Cygnus X-3, a system composed of a Wolf-Rayet star and a black hole or neutron star. The gamma-ray emission is linked to the radio emission from the jet launched in the system. The flux is modulated with the 4.8 hr orbital period, as expected if high energy electrons are upscattering photons emitted by the Wolf-Rayet star to gamma-ray energies. This modulation is computed assuming that high energy electrons are located at some distance along a relativistic jet of arbitrary orientation. Modeling shows that the jet must be inclined and that the gamm…
The abundance of accelerators and the ambient conditions make Cygnus X a natural laboratory for studying the life cycle of cosmic-rays (CRs). This naturally makes the Cygnus X complex a highly interesting source in neutrino astronomy, in particular concerning a possible detection with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, which has a good view of the northern hemisphere. In this paper, we model the multiwavelength spectrum of the Cygnus, for the first time using a broad data set from radio, MeV (COMPTEL), GeV (Fermi), TeV (Argo) and 10s of TeV (Milagro) energies. The modeling is performed assuming…
An analysis of 7.5 years of data in the high-energy starting event sample has been recently published by the IceCube collaboration. The hottest spot in a search for neutrino sources was found far above the Galactic plane and is thus, at first sight, difficult to reconcile with a Galactic origin. In this work, we calculate the cosmic ray (CR) density around nearby, young supernova remnants assuming anisotropic diffusion. Combining the obtained CR densities with the matter distribution deduced from extinction maps, we find two prominent hot spots: The one close to the most significant point in t…
We report the detection of X-ray emission from the symbiotic star V1329 Cyg with XMM-Newton. The spectrum from the EPIC pn, MOS1 and MOS2 instruments consists of a two-temperature plasma with k T = 0.11 keV and k T = 0.93 keV. Unlike the vast majority of symbiotic stars detected in X-rays, the soft component of the spectrum seems to be absorbed only by interstellar material. The shock velocities corresponding to the observed temperatures are about 300 km/s and about 900 km/s. We did not find either periodic or aperiodic X-ray variability, with upper limits on the amplitudes of such variations …
The Cygnus region hosts a giant molecular-cloud complex which actively forms massive stars. Interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas and radiation fields make it shine at gamma-ray energies. Several gamma-ray pulsars and other energetic sources are seen in this direction. In this paper we analyse the gamma-ray emission measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope in the energy range from 100 MeV to 100 GeV in order to probe the gas and cosmic-ray content over the scale of the whole Cygnus complex. The signal from bright pulsars is largely reduced by selecting photons in their off-pulse …
Aims: Probe the high-energy ($>$60 MeV) emission from the black hole X-ray binary system, Cygnus X-1, and investigate its origin. Methods: We analysed 7.5 yr of data by Fermi/LAT with the latest PASS8 software version. Results: We report the detection of a signal at $\sim$8 $σ$ statistical significance spatially coincident with Cygnus X-1 and a luminosity above 60 MeV of 5.5$\times$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The signal is correlated with the hard X-ray flux: the source is observed at high energies only during the hard X-ray spectral state, when the source is known to display persistent, relativis…
We have obtained a firm detection of Cyg X-1 during its hard and intermediate spectral states in the energy range of 40 MeV--60 GeV based on observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, confirming the independent results at $\geq$60MeV of a previous work. The detection significance is $\simeq\!8σ$ in the 0.1--10 GeV range. In the soft state, we have found only upper limits on the emission at energies $\gtrsim$0.1 MeV. However, we have found emission with a very soft spectrum in the 40--80 MeV range, not detected previously. This is likely to represent the high-energy cutoff of the high-ener…
In 2009, Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) became the first microquasar to be detected in the GeV γ-ray regime, via the satellites Fermi and AGILE. The addition of this new band to the observational toolbox holds promise for building a more detailed understanding of the relativistic jets of this and other systems. We present a rich dataset of radio, hard and soft X-ray, and γ-ray observations of Cyg X-3 made during a flaring episode in 2010 May. We detect a ~3-d softening and recovery of the X-ray emission, followed almost immediately by a ~1-Jy radio flare at 15 GHz, followed by a 4.3σ γ-ray flare (E > 10…
Thanks to recurrent observations of the black hole binary Cyg X-1 carried out over 15 years the INTEGRAL satellite has collected the largest data set in the hard X-ray band for this source. We have analyzed these data, complemented by data collected by other X-ray satellites and radio flux at 15 GHz. To characterize the spectral and variability properties of the system we have examined parameters such as the hard X-ray flux, photon index and fractional variability. Our main result is that the 2D distribution of the photon index and flux determined for the 22-100 keV band forms six clusters. Th…
The Fermi-LAT telescope has unexpectedly discovered GeV gamma-ray emission from the symbiotic Nova V407 Cygni. We investigate the radiation processes due to electrons and hadrons accelerated during the explosion of this Nova. We consider a scenario in which GeV gamma-ray emission observed by Fermi is produced by the electrons with energies of a few tens of GeV in the inverse Compton scattering of stellar radiation. On the other hand, the hadrons are expected to reach larger energies, due to the lack of radiation losses during acceleration process, producing TeV gamma-rays and neutrinos. We pre…
Detecting gamma-rays from microquasars is a challenging but worthwhile endeavor for understanding particle acceleration, the jet mechanism, and for constraining leptonic/hadronic emission models. We present results from a likelihood analysis on timescales of 1 d and 10 d of ~4 years worth of gamma-ray observations (0.1-10 GeV) by Fermi-LAT of Cyg X-1, Cyg X-3, GRS 1915+105, and GX 339-4. Our analysis reproduced all but one of the previous gamma-ray outbursts of Cyg X-3 as reported with Fermi or AGILE, plus 5 new days on which Cyg X-3 is detected at a significance of ~5-sigma that are not repor…
We report the detection of a short-lived narrow quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ~88 mHz in an Insight-HXMT observation during the soft state of the persistent black hole high mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1. This QPO is significantly detected in all the three instruments of Insight-HXMT, so in the broad energy range 1-250 keV. The fractional rms of the QPO does not show significant variations above 3 keV (~5%) while decreases at lower energy (~2%). We show that this QPO is different from the type-A, -B, and -C QPOs usually observed in black hole X-ray binaries. We compare QPOs at similar freq…
The origin of Galactic cosmic rays remains unconfirmed, but promising candidates for their sources are found in star-forming regions. We report a series of X-ray observations, with Suzaku, toward the nearby star-forming region of Cygnus X. They aim at comparing diffuse X-ray emissions on and off the $γ$-ray cocoon of hard cosmic rays revealed by Fermi LAT. After excluding point sources and small-scale structures and subtracting the non-X-ray and cosmic X-ray backgrounds, the 2--10~keV X-ray intensity distribution is found to monotonically decrease with increasing Galactic latitude. This indica…
We present the observation of Cyg X-1 in hard spectral state performed during the AGILE Science Verification Phase and Observing Cycle 1 in hard X-rays (with SuperAGILE) and gamma rays (with the GRID) and lasting for about 160 days with a live time of $\sim 6$ Ms. We investigate the variability of Cyg X-1 in hard X-rays at different timescales, from $\sim 300$ s up to one day, and we apply different tools of timing analysis, such as the autocorrelation function, the first order structure function and the Lomb-Scargle periodogram, to our data (from SuperAGILE) and to the simultaneous data in so…
Cygnus X-1 is a high-mass x-ray binary with a black hole compact object. It is normally extremely bright in hard x-rays and low energy gamma rays and resides in the canonical hard spectral state. Recently, however, Cyg X-1 made a transition to the canonical soft state, with a rise in the soft x-ray flux and a decrease in the flux in the hard x-ray and low energy gamma-ray energy bands. We have been using the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor on Fermi to monitor the fluxes of a number of sources in the 8--1000 keV energy range, including Cyg X-1. We present light curves of Cyg X-1 showing the flux decrea…
We study the radio/X-ray correlation in Cyg X-3. It has been known that the soft and hard X-ray fluxes in the hard spectral state are correlated positively and negatively, respectively, with the radio flux. We show that this implies that the observed $\sim$1--100 keV flux (which is a fair approximation to the bolometric flux) is completely uncorrelated with the radio flux. We can recover a positive correlation (seen in other sources and expected theoretically) if the soft X-rays are strongly absorbed by a local medium. Then, however, the intrinsic X-ray spectrum of Cyg X-3 in its hard state be…
Cygnus X-1 is one of the brightest X-ray sources observed and shows the X-ray intensity variations on time scales from milliseconds to months in both the soft and hard X-rays. The accretion onto the black hole is believed to be wind fed due to focused stellar wind from the binary companion HDE-226868. We aim to understand the physical mechanism responsible for the short timescale X-ray variability ($<$100 s) of the source in its Hard/Low state. We compute the 2D relativistic hydrodynamic simulation of the low angular momentum accretion flow with a time dependent outer boundary condition that r…
We present optical multi-colour photometry of V404 Cyg during the outburst from December, 2015 to January, 2016 together with the simultaneous X-ray data. This outburst occurred less than 6 months after the previous outburst in June-July, 2015. These two outbursts in 2015 were of a slow rise and rapid decay-type and showed large-amplitude ($\sim$2 mag) and short-term ($\sim$10 min-3 hours) optical variations even at low luminosity (0.01-0.1$L_{\rm Edd}$). We found correlated optical and X-ray variations in two $\sim$1 hour time intervals and performed Bayesian time delay estimations between th…
Cygnus X-1 is a Galactic black-hole binary and a microquasar. Its X-ray emission originates most likely in the accretion flow, while the radio emission is from a magnetized jet. We study long-term cross-correlations between its X-ray and radio fluxes, searching for lags of the peak of the correlation. We use soft X-ray data from the All Sky Monitor on board of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, hard X-ray data from the Burst Alert Telescope on board of Neil Gehrels Swift, and 15 GHz radio monitoring data from the Ryle and AMI telescopes, which light curves cover all of the spectral states of Cyg X-1…
On March 2010, the symbiotic binary V407 Cyg erupted as a result of a nova explosion. The event gave rise to a two-week long burst of >100MeV gamma-rays detected by Fermi/LAT, a unique observation testifying to particle acceleration in the system. The outburst can be considered a scaled-down supernova, with short dynamical time scale, and thus can constitute a test case for theories of the origin of galactic cosmic rays. We aim at determining the properties of the accelerated particles and identifying the origin of the high-energy radiation. We developed a model for diffusive shock acceleratio…
The Cygnus Loop (G74.0-8.5) is a very well-known nearby supernova remnant (SNR) in our Galaxy. Thanks to its large size, brightness, and angular offset from the Galactic plane, it has been studied in detail from radio to $γ$-ray emission. The $γ$ -rays probe the populations of energetic particles and their acceleration mechanisms at low shock speeds. We present an analysis of the $γ$-ray emission detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope over 11 years in the region of the Cygnus Loop. We performed detailed morphological and spectral studies of the $γ$-ra…
We analyze all of the available {\it RXTE} observations of Cyg X-3 in order to investigate the connection between the central X-ray source and its surrounding environment. The hardness--intensity diagram of Cyg X-3 displays a "shoe" shape rather than the Q-type shape commonly seen in other black hole X-ray binary, and exhibits no apparent hysteresis effect. During the $γ$-ray outbursts, no existing data are located in the hard and intermediate states, which suggest the absence of a significant population of non-thermal electrons when the source is in these states. For the first time, we presen…
We report the detection of 5 Type-1 thermonuclear X-ray bursts and one burst-like event in the neutron star LMXB source, Cyg X-2 using X-ray data obtained with the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) instrument on board AstroSat. We carry out an energy resolved burst profile analysis as well as time resolved spectral analysis for each of the bursts and characterize their properties. All bursts are weak with burst peak-to-persistent intensity ratios $<$ 3, decay times $\sim$2 s, and with fluences $\sim$1$\times$10$^{-8}$ ergs/cm$^2$, indicating that the observed bursts are Helium fuel…
Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) is a remarkable Galactic microquasar (X-ray binary) emitting from radio to $γ$-ray energies. In this paper, we consider hadronic model of emission of $γ$-rays above 100 MeV and their implications. We focus here on the joint $γ$-ray and neutrino production resulting from proton-proton interactions within the binary system. We find that the required proton injection kinetic power, necessary to explain the $γ$-ray flux observed by AGILE and Fermi-LAT, is $L_p \sim 10^{38}\:\rm{erg\:s^{-1}}$, a value in agreement with the average bolometric luminosity of the hypersoft state (w…
The radiatively driven wind of the primary star in wind-fed X-ray binaries can be suppressed by the X-ray irradiation of the compact secondary star. This causes feedback between the wind and the X-ray luminosity of the compact star. We estimated how the wind velocity on the face-on side of the donor star depends on the spectral state of the high-mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-3. We modeled the supersonic part of the wind by computing the line force (force multiplier) with the Castor, Abbott and Klein formalism and XSTAR physics and by solving the mass conservation and momentum balance equations. W…
Radio galaxies are intensively discussed as the sources of cosmic rays observed above about 3 EeV, called ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Here, the key issues from a recent investigation are summed up, where the individual characteristics of radio galaxies, as well as the impact by the extragalactic magnetic-field structures up to a distance of 120 Mpc has been taken into account. It is shown that the average contribution of radio galaxies taken over a very large volume cannot explain the observed features of UHECRs measured at Earth. However, we obtain excellent agreement with the spe…
Aims. Hard X-ray spectra of black hole binaries (BHB) are produced by Comptonization of soft seed photons by hot electrons near the black hole. The slope of the resulting ray spectra is governed by two main parameters: the electron temperature and the optical depth of the emitting plasma. Given the extreme brightness of V404~Cyg during the 2015 outburst, we aim to constrain the source spectral properties using an unprecedented time resolution in hard X-rays, and to monitor their evolution over the outburst. Methods. We have extracted and analyzed 602 X-ray spectra of V404 Cyg obtained by the I…
We study properties of the superorbital modulation of the X-ray emission of Cyg X-1. We find that it has had a stable period of about 300 d in soft and hard X-rays and in radio since 2005 until at least 2010, which is about double the previously seen period. This new period, seen in the hard spectral state only, is detected not only in the light curves but also in soft X-ray hardness ratios and in the amplitude of the orbital modulation. On the other hand, the spectral slope in hard X-rays, >20 keV, averaged over superorbital bins is constant, and the soft and hard X-rays and the radio emissio…
The black-hole binary, V404 Cygni, went into outburst in June 2015, after 26 years of X-ray quiescence. We observed the outburst with the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory. We present optical/UV observations taken with the Swift Ultra-violet Optical Telescope, and compare them with the X-ray observations obtained with the Swift X-ray Telescope. We find that dust extinction affecting the optical/UV, does not correlate with absorption due to neutral hydrogen that affects the X-ray emission. We suggest there is a small inhomogeneous high density absorber containing a negligible amount of dust, close…
We study high-energy $γ$-rays observed from Cyg X-3 by the Fermi Large Area Telescope and the 15-GHz emission observed by the Ryle Telescope and the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager. We measure the $γ$-ray spectrum averaged over strong flares much more accurately than before, and find it well modelled by Compton scattering of stellar radiation by relativistic electrons with the power law index of $\simeq$3.5 and a low-energy cutoff at the Lorentz factor of $\sim\!10^3$. We find a weaker spectrum in the soft spectral state, but only upper limits in the hard and intermediate states. We measure stron…
We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying th…
In this work we combine SEDs, radio maps and polarization observations to understand the emission mechanisms in Cygnus X-1. Our radiative model indicates that the MeV emission originates in the jet and that all the very high-energy emission is from hadronic origin. We also performed a synthetic radio map that suggests that our description of the magnetic field should be improved, since it leads to a very compact emission region. In order to choose the most suitable magnetic field geometry, we investigated the polarization in X-rays and we found that very simple geometries can explain the high …
With frequent flaring activity of its relativistic jets, Cygnus X-3 is one of the most active microquasars and is the only Galactic black hole candidate with confirmed high energy Gamma-ray emission, thanks to detections by Fermi/LAT and AGILE. In 2011, Cygnus X-3 was observed to transit to a soft X-ray state, which is known to be associated with high-energy Gamma-ray emission. We present the results of a multi-wavelength campaign covering a quenched state, when radio emission from Cygnus X-3 is at its weakest and the X-ray spectrum is very soft. A giant (~ 20 Jy) optically thin radio flare ma…
Radio galaxies are intensively discussed as the sources of cosmic rays observed above about $3\,{\times}\,10^{18}\,\text{eV}$, called ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). We present a first, systematic approach that takes the individual characteristics of these sources into account, as well as the impact of the extragalactic magnetic-field structures up to a distance of 120 Mpc. We use a mixed simulation setup, based on 3D simulations of UHECRs ejected by observed, individual radio galaxies taken out to a distance of 120 Mpc, and on 1D simulations over a continuous source distribution contr…
In a dwarf nova, the accretion disk around the white dwarf is a source of ultraviolet, optical, and infrared photons, but is never hot enough to emit X-rays. Observed X-rays instead originate from the boundary layer between the disk and the white dwarf. As the disk switches between quiescence and outburst states, the 2-10 keV X-ray flux is usually seen to be anti-correlated with the optical brightness. Here we present RXTE monitoring observations of two dwarf novae, VW Hyi and WW Cet, confirming the optical/X-ray anti-correlation in these two systems. However, we do not detect any episodes of …
Black-hole binary (BHB) systems comprise a stellar-mass black hole and a closely orbiting companion star. Matter is transferred from the companion to the black hole, forming an accretion disk, corona and jet structures. The resulting release of gravitational energy leads to emission of X-rays. The radiation is affected by special/general relativistic effects, and can serve as a probe of the properties of the black hole and surrounding environment, if the accretion geometry is properly identified. Two competing models describe the disk-corona geometry for the hard spectral state of BHBs, based …
We report on Fermi/Large Area Telescope observations of the accreting black hole low-mass X-ray binary V404 Cygni during its outburst in June-July 2015. Detailed analyses reveal a possible excess of $γ$-ray emission on 26 June 2015, with a very soft spectrum above $100$ MeV, at a position consistent with the direction of V404 Cyg (within the $95\%$ confidence region and a chance probability of $4 \times 10^{-4}$). This emission cannot be associated with any previously-known Fermi source. Its temporal coincidence with the brightest radio and hard X-ray flare in the lightcurve of V404 Cyg, at th…
In January 2009, the 2.1-sec anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 1547.0-5408 evoked intense burst activity. A follow-up Suzaku observation on January 28 recorded enhanced persistent emission both in soft and hard X-rays (Enoto et al. 2010b). Through re-analysis of the same Suzaku data, 18 short bursts were identified in the X-ray events recorded by the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) and the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS). Their spectral peaks appear in the HXD-PIN band, and their 10-70 keV X-ray fluences range from ~2e-9 erg cm-2 to 1e-7 erg cm-2. Thus, the 18 events define a significantly weaker burst sam…
We report results from TeV gamma-ray observations of the microquasar Cygnus X-3. The observations were made with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) over a time period from 2007 June 11 to 2011 November 28. VERITAS is most sensitive to gamma rays at energies between 85 GeV to 30 TeV. The effective exposure time amounts to a total of about 44 hours, with the observations covering six distinct radio/X-ray states of the object. No significant TeV gamma-ray emission was detected in any of the states, nor with all observations combined. The lack of a positive signa…
We have obtained measurements and upper limits on the emission of Cyg X-1 in the photon energy range of 0.03--300 GeV based on observations by Fermi. We present the results separately for the hard and soft spectral states, as well for all of the analysed data. In the hard state, we detect a weak steady emission in the 0.1--10 GeV range with a power-law photon index of Gamma=2.6+-0.2 at a 4 sigma statistical significance. This measurement, even if considered to be an upper limit, strongly constrains Compton emission of the steady radio jet, present in that state. The number of relativistic elec…
Analysis of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G78.2+2.1 ($γ$ Cygni) with 7.2 years of cumulative data from the Fermi-LAT telescope shows a distinct hard, bright and extended component to the north of the shell coincident with the known TeV source VER J2019+407. In the GeV-TeV energy range its spectrum is best described by a broken power-law with indices 1.8 below a break energy of 71 GeV and 2.5 above the break. A broadband spectral energy distribution is assembled and different scenarios for the origin of the gamma-rays are explored. Both hadronic and leptonic mechanisms are able …
Cygnus X-3 is one of the brightest X-ray and radio sources in the Galaxy, and is well known for its erratic behaviour in X-rays as well as in the radio, occasionally producing major radio flares associated with relativistic ejections. However, even after many years of observations in various wavelength bands Cyg X-3 still eludes clear physical understanding. Studying different emission bands simultaneously in microquasars has proved to be a fruitful approach towards understanding these systems, especially by shedding light on the accretion disc/jet connection. We continue this legacy by constr…
A detailed investigation of radio galaxies has recently stressed these sources as the possible origin of the cosmic rays observed above $3\,\text{EeV}$. Here, the relevance of this model at energies below $3\,\text{EeV}$ is investigated. So, it is shown that the average contribution of radio galaxies can accurately explain the observed CR flux between the second knee and the ankle in the case of a strong source evolution. However, the model cannot provide the increasing heaviness and variance at energies $\lesssim 1\,\text{EeV}$ of the observed chemical composition. In addition, it is exposed …
We report the detection of super-hard (>10 keV) X-ray emission extending up to 70 keV from the classical nova V2491 Cygni using the Suzaku observatory. We conducted two ~20 ks target-of-opportunity observations 9 and 29 days after the outburst on 2008 April 11, yielding wide energy range spectra by combining the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer and the Hard X-ray Detector. On day 9, a spectrum was obtained at 1.0-70 keV with the Fe XXV Kαline feature and a very flat continuum, which is explained by thermal plasma with a 3 keV temperature and power-law emission with a photon index of 0.1 attenuated b…
We present a radio observation of microquasar Cyg X-3 during an X-ray state transition from ultrasoft to hard state in the 2007 May$-$June flare using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) at 22 GHz. During the transition, a short-lived mini-flare of ${\lesssim}3$ hr was detected prior to the major flare. In such a transition, a jet ejection is believed to occur, but there have been no direct observations to support it. An analysis of Gaussian fits to the observed visibility amplitudes shows a time variation of the source axis, or a structural change, during the mini-flare. Our model…
