We here both unify and generalize nonassociative structures on typed binary trees, that is to say plane binary trees which edges are decorated by elements of a set $Ω$. We prove that we obtain such a structure, called an $Ω$-dendriform structure, if $Ω$ has four products satisfying certain axioms (EDS axioms), including the axioms of a diassociative semigroup. This includes matching dendriform algebras introduced by Zhang, Gao and Guo and family dendriform algebras associated to a semigroup introduced by Zhang, Gao and Manchon , and of course dendriform algebras when $Ω$ is reduced to a single element. We also give examples of EDS, including all the EDS of cardinality two; a combinatorial description of the products of such a structure on typed binary trees, but also on words; a study of the Koszul dual of the associated operads; and considerations on the existence of a coproduct, in order to obtain dendriform bialgebras.

In this paper, we first prove that a Rota-Baxter family algebra indexed by a semigroup induces an ordinary Rota-Baxter algebra structure on the tensor product with the semigroup algebra. We show that the same phenomenon arises for dendriform and tridendriform family algebras. Then we construct free dendriform family algebras in terms of typed decorated planar binary trees. Finally, we generalize typed decorated rooted trees to typed valently decorated Schröder trees and use them to construct free tridendriform family algebras.

Hex-trees are identified as a particular instance of weighted unary-binary trees. The Horton-Strahler numbers of these objects are revisited, and, thanks to a substitution that is not immediately intuitive, explicit results are possible. They are augmented by asymptotic evaluations as well. Furthermore, marked ordered trees (in bijection to skew Dyck paths) are investigated, followed 3-Motzkin paths and multi-edge trees. We develop combinatorial methods for computing the rotation distance between binary trees, i.e., equivalently, the flip distance between triangulations of a polygon. As an application, we prove that, for each n, there exist size n trees at distance 2n - O(sqrt(n)).
The theme of this article is the algebraic combinatorics of leaf-labeled rooted binary trees and forests of such trees. The structure of a Hopf operad is defined on the vector spaces spanned by forests of leaf-labeled, rooted, binary trees. An explicit formula for the coproduct and its dual product is given, using a poset on forests.

Given a fixed rooted binary tree $B$ with $k$ leaves, we let $γ(B,T)$ be the proportion of all subsets of $k$ leaves in $T$ that induce a tree isomorphic to $B$. The inducibility of $B$ is $\limsup_{|T| \to \infty} γ(B,T)$. We provide an algorithm for computing the generating function that counts n-leaf binary trees avoiding a given binary tree pattern t. Equipped with this counting mechanism, we study the analogue of Wilf equivalence in which two tree patterns are equivalent if the respective n-leaf trees that avoid them are equinumerous. We investigate the equivalence classes combinatorially. A classical problem in phylogenetic tree analysis is to decide whether there is a phylogenetic tree $T$ that contains all information of a given collection $\cP$ of phylogenetic trees. If the answer is "yes" we say that $\cP$ is compatible and $T$ displays $\cP$. This decision problem is NP-complete even if all input trees are quartets, that is binary trees with exactly four leaves. In this paper, we prove a sufficient condition for a set of binary phylogenetic trees to be compatible. We take a global view at substitution invariant Sturmian sequences. We show that homogeneous substitution invariant Sturmian sequences $s_{α,α}$ can be indexed by two binary trees, associated directly to Johannes Kepler's tree of harmonic fractions from 1619. We obtain similar results for the inhomogeneous sequences $s_{α,1-α}$ and $s_{α,0}$.

We study the set of NBC sets (no broken circuit sets) of the Linial arrangement and deduce a constructive bijection to the set of local binary search trees. We then generalize this construction to two families of Linial type arrangements for which the bijections are with some $k$-ary labelled trees that we introduce for this purpose.

Binary rooted trees, both in the ordered and in the un-ordered case, are well studied structures in the field of combinatorics. The aim of this work is to study particular patterns in these classes of trees. We consider completely unbalanced subtrees, where unbalancing is measured according to the so-called Colless's index. The size of the biggest unbalanced subtree becomes then a new parameter with respect to which we find several enumerations.
A reformulation of the path length of binary search trees is given in terms of permutations, allowing to extend the definition to the instance of words, where the letters are obtained by independent geometric random variables (with parameter q). In this way, expressions for expectation and variance are obtained which in the limit for $q\to1$ are the classical expressions.
One wishes to remove $k-1$ edges of a vertex-weighted tree $T$ such that the weights of the $k$ induced connected components are approximately the same. How well can one do it ? In this paper, we investigate such $k$-separator for {\em quasi-binary} trees. We show that, under certain conditions on the total weight of the tree, a particular $k$-separator can be constructed such that the smallest (respectively the largest) weighted component is lower (respectively upper) bounded. Examples showing optimality for the lower bound are also given.

We look at a family of meta-Fibonacci sequences which arise in studying the number of leaves at the largest level in certain infinite sequences of binary trees, restricted compositions of an integer, and binary compact codes. For this family of meta-Fibonacci sequences and two families of related sequences we derive ordinary generating functions and recurrence relations. Included in these families of sequences are several well-known sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).
Fomin (1994) introduced a notion of duality between two graded graphs on the same set of vertices. He also introduced a generalization to dual graded graphs of the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm. We show how Fomin's approach applies to the binary search tree insertion algorithm also known as sylvester insertion, and to the hypoplactic insertion algorithm.

We present a new uniform random sampler for binary trees with $n$ internal nodes consuming $2n + Θ(\log(n)^2)$ random bits on average. This makes it quasi-optimal and out-performs the classical Remy algorithm. We also present a sampler for unary-binary trees with $n$ nodes taking $Θ(n)$ random bits on average. Both are the first linear-time algorithms to be optimal up to a constant.
A tree-based network $N$ on $X$ is called universal if every phylogenetic tree on $X$ is a base tree for $N$. Recently, binary universal tree-based networks have attracted great attention in the literature and their existence has been analyzed in various studies. In this note, we extend the analysis to non-binary networks and show that there exist both a rooted and an unrooted non-binary universal tree-based network with $n$ leaves for all positive integers $n$.
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
In this paper we examine planted binary plane trees. First, we provide an exact formula for the number of planted binary trees with given Horton-Strahler orders. Then, using the notion of entropy, we examine the structural complexity of random planted binary trees with N vertices. Finally, we quantify the complexity of the tree's structural properties as tree grows in size, by evaluating the entropy rate for planted binary plane trees with N vertices and for planted binary plane trees that satisfy Horton Law with Horton exponent R.
In "Hopf algebra of the planar binary trees", Adv. Math. 139 (1998), no. 2, 293--309, we constructed by induction a graded associative product on the vector space generated by the planar binary trees (resp. the permutations). In the present paper we prove an explicit formula for this product in terms of a partial order on the set of planar binary trees (resp. the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric groups).
This paper describes the shortest path problem in weighted graphs and examines the differences in efficiency that occur when using Dijkstra's algorithm with a Fibonacci heap, binary heap, and self-balancing binary tree. Using C++ implementations of these algorithm variants, we find that the fastest method is not always the one that has the lowest asymptotic complexity. Reasons for this are discussed and backed with empirical evidence.
A fringe subtree of a rooted tree is a subtree consisting of one of the nodes and all its descendants. In this paper, we are specifically interested in the number of non-isomorphic trees that appear in the collection of all fringe subtrees of a binary tree. This number is analysed under two different random models: uniformly random binary trees and random binary search trees. Three standard subtree transfer operations for binary trees, used in particular for phylogenetic trees, are: tree bisection and reconnection ($TBR$), subtree prune and regraft ($SPR$) and rooted subtree prune and regraft ($rSPR$). For a pair of leaf-labelled binary trees with $n$ leaves, the maximum number of such moves required to transform one into the other is $n-Θ(\sqrt{n})$, extending a result of Ding, Grunewald and Humphries. We give a simple explanation why the stationary state of the 1D TASEP model with open boundaries is related to the Catalan numbers. Our construction is based on planar binary trees and provides a combinatorial solution of the stationary state. We discuss the relation to Catalan tableaux approaches in an appendix.
This extended abstract is dedicated to the analysis of the height of non-plane unlabelled rooted binary trees. The height of such a tree chosen uniformly among those of size $n$ is proved to have a limiting theta distribution, both in a central and local sense. Moderate as well as large deviations estimates are also derived. The proofs rely on the analysis (in the complex plane) of generating functions associated with trees of bounded height.
Plane increasing trees are rooted labeled trees embedded into the plane such that the sequence of labels is increasing on any branch starting at the root. Relaxed binary trees are a subclass of unlabeled directed acyclic graphs. We construct a bijection between these two combinatorial objects and study the therefrom arising connections of certain parameters. We investigate the number of permutations that occur in random labellings of trees. This is a generalisation of the number of subpermutations occurring in a random permutation. It also generalises some recent results on the number of inversions in randomly labelled trees. We consider complete binary trees as well as random split trees a large class of random trees of logarithmic height introduced by Devroye in 1998. We develop a purely set-theoretic formalism for binary trees and binary graphs. We define a category of binary automata, and display it as a fibred category over the category of binary graphs. We also relate the notion of binary graphs to transition systems, which arise in the theory of concurrent computing.
