This paper considers a stochastic production planning problem with regime switching. There are two regimes corresponding to different economic cycles. A factory is planning its production so as to minimize production costs. We analyze this problem through the value function approach. The optimal production is characterized through the solution of an elliptic system of partial differential equations which is shown to have a solution.
Planning, scheduling and dispatching play critical roles in the operations of a supply chain. Their definitions are clearly given through a unified view in this paper. The distinction between planning and scheduling is analyzed from the view point of microeconomics and queueing theory. The distinction between scheduling and dispatching is analyzed from the view point of computational complexity and hierarchical decomposition. Based on the elasticity of price and capacity, planning can be separated into demand planning or capacity planning. Scheduling period is the time horizon where price and …
This paper is concerned with the problem of finding the optimal of extraction policies of an oil field in light of various financial and economical restrictions and constraints. Taking into account the fact that the oil price in worldwide commodity markets fluctuates randomly following global and seasonal macro-economic parameters, we model the evolution of the oil price as a mean reverting regime switching jump diffusion process. We formulate this problem as finite-time horizon optimal control problem. We solve the control problem using the method of viscosity solutions. Moreover, we construc…
The mathematical theory for optimal switching is by now relatively well developed, but the number of concrete applications of this theoretical framework remains few. In this paper, we bridge parts of this gap by applying optimal switching theory to a set of production planning problems related to hydropower plants. In particular, we study two different cases involving small run-of-river hydropower plants and show how optimal switching can be used to create fully automatic production schemes in these cases, with non-zero cost of switching between different states of production. Along the way of…
In this article we consider the question of the existence of positive symmetric solutions to the problems of the following type $Δu=a\left( \left\vert x\right\vert \right) h\left( u\right) +b\left( \left\vert x\right\vert \right) g\left( u\right) $ for $x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}$, which are called entire large solutions. Here $N\geq 3$, and we assume that $a$ and $b$ are nonnegative continuous spherically symmetric functions on $\mathbb{R}% ^{N} $. We extend results previously obtained for special cases of $h$ and $% g $ and we will describe a real-world model in which such problems may arise.
We are interested in the effect of consumer demand estimation error for new products in the context of production planning. An inventory model is proposed, whereby demand is influenced by price and advertising. The effect of parameter misspecification of the demand model is empirically examined in relation to profit and service level feasibility. Faced with an uncertain consumer reaction to price and advertising, we find that it is safer to overestimate rather than underestimate the effect of price on demand. Moreover, under a service level constraint it is safer to overestimate the effect of …
We consider a production-inventory control model with finite capacity and two different production rates, assuming that the cumulative process of customer demand is given by a compound Poisson process. It is possible at any time to switch over from the different production rates but it is mandatory to switch-off when the inventory process reaches the storage maximum capacity. We consider holding, production, shortage penalty and switching costs. This model was introduced by Doshi, Van Der Duyn Schouten and Talman in 1978. Our aim is to minimize the expected discounted cumulative costs up to in…
In countries with an extended use of district heating (DH), the integrated operation of DH and power systems can increase the flexibility of the power system achieving a higher integration of renewable energy sources (RES). DH operators can not only provide flexibility to the power system by acting on the electricity market, but also profit from the situation to lower the overall system cost. However, the operational planning and bidding includes several uncertain components at the time of planning: electricity prices as well as heat and power production from RES. In this publication, we propo…
A prestressed precast beam is a type of beam that is stretched with traction elements. A common task in a factory of prestressed precast beams involves fulfilling, within a time horizon, the demand ordered by clients. A typical order includes beams of different lengths and types, with distinct beams potentially requiring different curing periods. We refer to the problem of planning such production as Heterogeneous Prestressed Precast Beams Multiperiod Production Planning (HPPBMPP). We formally define the HPPBMPP, argue its NP-hardness, and introduce four novel integer programming models for it…
Production logistics has an important role as a chain that connects the components of the production system. The most important goal of production logistics plans is to keep the flow of the production system well. However, compared to the production system, the level of planning, management, and digitalization of the production logistics system is not high enough, so it is difficult to respond flexibly when unexpected situations occur in the production logistics system. Optimization and heuristic algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem, but due to their inflexible nature, they can …
Stochastic production planning problems were studied in several works; the model with one production good was discussed in [3]. The extension to several economic goods is not a trivial issue as one can see from the recent works [4], [5] and [6]. The following qualitative aspects of the problem are analyzed in [5]; the existence of a solution and its characterization through dynamic programming/HJB equation, as well as the verification (i.e., the solution of the HJB equation yields the optimal production of the goods). In this paper, we stylize the model of [4] and [5] in order to provide some …
Constrained Nonlinear programming problems are hard problems, and one of the most widely used and common problems for production planning problem to optimize. In this study, one of the mathematical models of production planning is survey and the problem solved by cuckoo algorithm. Cuckoo Algorithm is efficient method to solve continues non linear problem. Moreover, mentioned models of production planning solved with Genetic algorithm and Lingo software and the results will compared. The Cuckoo Algorithm is suitable choice for optimization in convergence of solution
Strategic decisions to develop a mineral deposit are subject to geological uncertainty, due to the sparsity of drill core samples. The selection of metallurgical equipment is especially critical, since it restricts the processing options that are available to different ore blocks, even as the nature of the deposit is still highly uncertain. Current approaches for long-term mine planning are successful at addressing geological uncertainty, but do not adequately represent alternate modes of operation for the mineral processing plant, nor do they provide sufficient guidance for developing process…
In the day-to-day operation of a power system, the system operator repeatedly solves short-term generation planning problems. When formulating these problems the operators have to weigh the risk of costly failures against increased production costs. The resulting problems are often high-dimensional and various approximations have been suggested in the literature. In this article we formulate the short-term planning problem as an optimal switching problem with delayed reaction. Furthermore, we proposed a control variable technique that can be used in Monte Carlo regression to obtain a computati…
This paper is concerned with a simulation study for a stochastic production network model, where the capacities of machines may change randomly. We introduce performance measures motivated by risk measures from finance leading to a simulation based optimization framework for the production planning. The same measures are used to investigate the scenario when capacities are related to workers that are randomly not available. This corresponds to the study of a workforce planning problem in an uncertain environment.

The application of combinatorial optimization problems to solving the problems of planning processes for industries based on a fund of reconfigurable production resources is considered. The results of their solution by mixed integer programming methods are presented.
Unit commitment problem on an electricity network consists in choosing the production plan of the plants (units) of a company in order to meet demand constraints. It is generally solved using a decomposition approach where demand constraints are relaxed, resulting in one pricing subproblem for each unit. In this paper we focus on the pricing subproblem for thermal units at EDF, a major French electricity producer. Our objective is to determine an optimal two-day production plan that minimizes the overall cost while respecting several non-linear operational constraints. The pricing problem is g…
This paper studies carbon taxes effectiveness to induce a transition to cleaner production when a firm faces different technologies and demands. To determine carbon taxes effectiveness, we propose a framework based on a strategic capacity planning under carbon taxes model, that consider proper perfomance measures. The model, which is formulated as a mixed integer linear problem (MILP), considers issues that previous work have not studied jointly, such as machine replacement, workforce planning, and maintenance. The effectiveness measures consider levels of clean production and periods to reach…
We consider piecewise-deterministic optimal control problems in which the environment randomly switches among several deterministic modes, and the goal is to optimize the expected cost up to the termination while taking the likelihood of future mode-switches into account. The dynamic programming approach yields a weakly-coupled system of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDEs satisfied by the value functions of individual modes. We derive and implement semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian numerical schemes for that system. We further recover simpler, "asymptotically optimal" controls and test their performance …
The hierarchical structure of production planning has the advantage of assigning different decision variables to their respective time horizons and therefore ensures their manageability. However, the restrictive structure of this top-down approach implying that upper level decisions are the constraints for lower level decisions also has its shortcomings. One problem that occurs is that deterministic mixed integer decision problems are often used for long-term planning, but the real production system faces a set of stochastic influences. Therefore, a planned utilisation factor has to be include…
Textile industry is becoming a highly competitive area with the increase in demand for textile products. Since expanding the production capacity is not always feasible, optimizing the existing system is more practical. In particular, we consider a felt production system of a textile factory operating in Turkey in this study. We aim to minimize the production costs by optimizing machine operating speeds as well as building an efficient production lot sizing plan within the planning horizon. In this direction, we propose the Lot Sizing and Machine Speed (LSMS) nonlinear model to determine the op…
We introduce a novel variant of cutting production planning problems named Integrated Cutting and Packing Heterogeneous Precast Beams Multiperiod Production Planning (ICP-HPBMPP). We propose an integer linear programming model for the ICP-HPBMPP, as well as a lower bound for its optimal objective function value, which is empirically shown to be closer to the optimal solution value than the bound obtained from the linear relaxation of the model. We also propose a genetic algorithm approach for the ICP-HPBMPP as an alternative solution method. We discuss computational experiments and propose a p…
In this paper, we investigate the energy system design problems with the multi-generation technologies, i.e., simultaneous generation of multiple types of energy. We propose a long-term planning model which integrates macro-level strategic decisions such as facility location and multi-generation technology investment, and micro-level operational decisions such as production planning and energy transportation. Our results illustrate the economic value of multi-generation technologies in lieu of the spatio-temporal demand uncertainty for energy. In particular, we show that the multi-generation t…
Wind power integration is an essential problem for modern power industry. In this paper, we develop a novel bilevel mixed integer optimization model to investigate wind power generation planning problem in an electricity market environment with topology control operations. Different from existing formulations, the lower level market clearing problem introduces binary variables to model line switching decisions, which have been proven very effective to improve transmission capability under different load profiles. To solve this challenging bilevel mixed integer program, a recent decomposition m…
We solve non-Markovian optimal switching problems in discrete time on an infinite horizon, when the decision maker is risk aware and the filtration is general, and establish existence and uniqueness of solutions for the associated reflected backward stochastic difference equations. An example application to hydropower planning is provided.
We consider a risk-sensitive optimization of consumption-utility on infinite time horizon where the one-period investment gain depends on an underlying economic state whose evolution over time is assumed to be described by a discrete-time, finite-state, Markov chain. We suppose that the production function also depends on a sequence of i.i.d. random shocks. For the sake of generality, the utility and the production functions are allowed to be unbounded from above. Under the Markov regime-switching model, it is shown that the value function of optimization problem satisfies an optimality equati…
A significant amount of hazardous waste generated from health sectors and industrial processes has posed a major threat to human health by causing environmental issues and contamination of air, soil, and water resources. This paper presents a multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation for a sustainable hazardous waste location-routing problem. The location of the facilities and routing decisions for transporting hazardous waste and the waste residue is considered to design a suitable waste collection system. The presented model simultaneously minimizes the total co…
In this paper we study an incomplete information optimal switching problem in which the manager only has access to noisy observations of the underlying Brownian motion $\{W_t\}_{t \geq 0}$. The manager can, at a fixed cost, switch between having the production facility open or closed and must find the optimal management strategy using only the noisy observations. Using the theory of linear stochastic filtering, we reduce the incomplete information problem to a full information problem, show that the value function is non-decreasing with the amount of information available, and that the value f…

This paper analyzes the impact of production forecast errors on the expansion planning of a power system and investigates the influence of market design to facilitate the integration of renewable generation. For this purpose, we propose a stochastic programming modeling framework to determine the expansion plan that minimizes system-wide investment and operating costs, while ensuring a given share of renewable generation in the electricity supply. Unlike existing ones, this framework includes both a day-ahead and a balancing market so as to capture the impact of both production forecasts and t…
In this paper, we study the $m$-states optimal switching problem in finite horizon, when the switching cost functions are arbitrary and can be positive or negative. This has an economic incentive in terms of central evaluation in cases where such organizations or state grants or financial assistance to power plants that promotes green energy in their production activity or what uses less polluting modes in their production. We show existence for optimal strategy via a verification theorem then we show existence and uniqueness of the value processes by using an approximation scheme. In the mark…
A novel coupled path planning and energy management problem for a hybrid unmanned air vehicle is considered, where the hybrid vehicle is powered by a dual gas/electric system. Such an aerial robot is envisioned for use in an urban setting where noise restrictions are in place in certain zones necessitating battery only operation. We consider the discrete version of this problem, where a graph is constructed by sampling the boundaries of the restricted zones, and develop a path planning algorithm. The planner simultaneously solves the path planing along with the energy mode switching control, u…
We study optimal behavior of energy producers under a CO_2 emission abatement program. We focus on a two-player discrete-time model where each producer is sequentially optimizing her emission and production schedules. The game-theoretic aspect is captured through a reduced-form price-impact model for the CO_2 allowance price. Such duopolistic competition results in a new type of a non-zero-sum stochastic switching game on finite horizon. Existence of game Nash equilibria is established through generalization to randomized switching strategies. No uniqueness is possible and we therefore conside…

We propose a novel belief space planning technique for continuous dynamics by viewing the belief system as a hybrid dynamical system with time-driven switching. Our approach is based on the perturbation theory of differential equations and extends Sequential Action Control to stochastic dynamics. The resulting algorithm, which we name SACBP, does not require discretization of spaces or time and synthesizes control signals in near real-time. SACBP is an anytime algorithm that can handle general parametric Bayesian filters under certain assumptions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approa…
This paper addresses a single machine scheduling problem with non-preemptive jobs to minimize the total electricity cost. Two latest trends in the area of the energy-aware scheduling are considered, namely the variable energy pricing and the power-saving states of a machine. Scheduling of the jobs and the machine states are considered jointly to achieve the highest possible savings. Although this problem has been previously addressed in the literature, the reported results of the state-of-the-art method show that the optimal solutions can be found only for instances with up to 35 jobs and 209 …
Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly appealing energy carrier, as the costs of renewable energy generation and water electrolysis continue to decline. Developing modelling and decision tools for the H$_{2}$ supply chain that fully capture the flexibility of various resources is essential to understanding the overall cost-competitiveness of H$_{2}$ use. To address this need, we have developed a H$_{2}$ supply chain planning model that determines the least-cost mix of H$_{2}$ generation, storage, transmission, and compression facilities to meet H$_{2}$ demands and is coupled with power systems t…
