The application of combinatorial optimization problems to solving the problems of planning processes for industries based on a fund of reconfigurable production resources is considered. The results of their solution by mixed integer programming methods are presented.
A novel coupled path planning and energy management problem for a hybrid unmanned air vehicle is considered, where the hybrid vehicle is powered by a dual gas/electric system. Such an aerial robot is envisioned for use in an urban setting where noise restrictions are in place in certain zones necessitating battery only operation. We consider the discrete version of this problem, where a graph is constructed by sampling the boundaries of the restricted zones, and develop a path planning algorithm. The planner simultaneously solves the path planing along with the energy mode switching control, u…
Repeated history of pandemics, such as SARS, H1N1, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19, has shown that pandemic risk is inevitable. Extraordinary shortages of medical resources have been observed in many parts of the world. Some attributing factors include the lack of sufficient stockpiles and the lack of coordinated efforts to deploy existing resources to the location of greatest needs. The paper investigates contingency planning and resources allocation from a risk management perspective, as opposed to the prevailing supply chain perspective. The key idea is that the competition of limited critical re…
In this paper, we propose a novel framework of air traffic management (ATM). The framework is in particular characterized by the trajectory planning of weakly supervised aircraft; the air traffic control (ATC) does not completely determine the trajectory of each aircraft unlike conventional planning methods, but determines allowable safe sets of trajectories. ATC requests pilots to select their own trajectories from the sets, and the pilots determine ones by pursuing their own aims. For example, the selection can be based on pilot preferences and airline strategies. This two stage ATM system c…
Supply chain management is an integrated approach for planning and controlling materials, information, and finances as they move in a process which begins from suppliers and ends with customers in forward approach. As distribution network planning is strategically done, the related decisions should be optimized. This supply chain planning involves transportation, the location of facilities, and inventory control decisions. This study is a new approach for considering customers' differentiation in an integrated model to location-allocation and inventory control supply chain. The proposed model …

The central goal of this study is to advance the state-of-the-art in the field of water network management for industrial ecologies. Considering the global water shortage and environmental regulations, the reduction of water consumption has become a necessity within the industrial sector. To find the optimal water management strategies in an eco-industrial park (EIP), a refined superstructure is proposed. An MINLP mathematical model is then developed, based on the superstructure, to synthesize water and wastewater streams within the network, including nearby companies. Surveying two case studi…
Quantum computing is developing fast. Real world applications are within reach in the coming years. One of the most promising areas is combinatorial optimisation, where the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimisation (QUBO) problem formulation is used to get good approximate solutions. Both the universal quantum computer as the quantum annealer can handle this kind of problems well. In this paper, we present an application on multimodal container planning. We show how to map this problem to a QUBO problem formulation and how the practical implementation can be done on the quantum annealer prod…
A significant amount of hazardous waste generated from health sectors and industrial processes has posed a major threat to human health by causing environmental issues and contamination of air, soil, and water resources. This paper presents a multi-objective mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation for a sustainable hazardous waste location-routing problem. The location of the facilities and routing decisions for transporting hazardous waste and the waste residue is considered to design a suitable waste collection system. The presented model simultaneously minimizes the total co…
This paper presents an optimization-based receding horizon trajectory planning algorithm for dynamical systems operating in unstructured and cluttered environments. The proposed approach is a two-step procedure that uses a motion planning algorithm in a first step to efficiently find a feasible, but possibly suboptimal, nominal solution to the trajectory planning problem where in particular the combinatorial aspects of the problem are solved. The resulting nominal trajectory is then improved in a second optimization-based receding horizon planning step which performs local trajectory refinemen…
