Quantum computing is developing fast. Real world applications are within reach in the coming years. One of the most promising areas is combinatorial optimisation, where the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimisation (QUBO) problem formulation is used to get good approximate solutions. Both the universal quantum computer as the quantum annealer can handle this kind of problems well. In this paper, we present an application on multimodal container planning. We show how to map this problem to a QUBO problem formulation and how the practical implementation can be done on the quantum annealer produced by D-Wave Systems.
We propose a new kernel that quantifies success for the task of computing a core-periphery partition for an undirected network. Finding the associated optimal partitioning may be expressed in the form of a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem, to which a state-of-the-art quantum annealer may be applied. We therefore make use of the new objective function to (a) judge the performance of a quantum annealer, and (b) compare this approach with existing heuristic core-periphery partitioning methods. The quantum annealing is performed on the commercially available D-Wave machin…

The most advanced D-Wave Advantage quantum annealer has 5000+ qubits, however, every qubit is connected to a small number of neighbors. As such, implementation of a fully-connected graph results in an order of magnitude reduction in qubit count. To compensate for the reduced number of qubits, one has to rely on special heuristic software such as qbsolv, the purpose of which is to decompose a large problem into smaller pieces that fit onto a quantum annealer. In this work, we compare the performance of two implementations of such software: the original open-source qbsolv which is a part of the …
A quantum annealer heuristically minimizes quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problems, but is limited by the physical hardware in the size and density of the problems it can handle. We have developed a meta-heuristic solver that utilizes D-Wave Systems' quantum annealer (or any other QUBO problem optimizer) to solve larger or denser problems, by iteratively solving subproblems, while keeping the rest of the variables fixed. We present our algorithm, several variants, and the results for the optimization of standard QUBO problem instances from OR-Library of sizes 500 and 2500 a…
In this paper we present a novel strategy to solve optimization problems within a hybrid quantum-classical scheme based on quantum annealing, with a particular focus on QUBO problems. The proposed algorithm is based on an iterative structure where the representation of an objective function into the annealer architecture is learned and already visited solutions are penalized by a tabu-inspired search. The result is a heuristic search equipped with a learning mechanism to improve the encoding of the problem into the quantum architecture. We prove the convergence of the algorithm to a global opt…
The reconstruction of charged particles will be a key computing challenge for the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) where increased data rates lead to large increases in running time for current pattern recognition algorithms. An alternative approach explored here expresses pattern recognition as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) using software and quantum annealing. At track densities comparable with current LHC conditions, our approach achieves physics performance competitive with state-of-the-art pattern recognition algorithms. More research will be needed to…
We report on a case study in programming an early quantum annealer to attack optimization problems related to operational planning. While a number of studies have looked at the performance of quantum annealers on problems native to their architecture, and others have examined performance of select problems stemming from an application area, ours is one of the first studies of a quantum annealer's performance on parametrized families of hard problems from a practical domain. We explore two different general mappings of planning problems to quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) prob…
In this submission we solve the Aircraft Loading Optimization problem of the Airbus Quantum Computing Challenge. Finding the optimal loading for a plane is a challenging task for classical algorithms, especially because the solution must respect several flight constraints. The contribution of this work is formulating this problem and its constraints in a model based on QUBO equations which are compatible with quantum annealers. We then benchmarked the model on different solvers to evaluate the performances and capabilities of current technologies.
Quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) is the mathematical formalism for phrasing and solving a class of optimization problems that are combinatorial in nature. Due to their natural equivalence with the two dimensional Ising model for ferromagnetism in statistical mechanics, problems from the QUBO class can be solved on quantum annealing hardware. In this paper, we report a QUBO formatting of the problem of optimal control of time-dependent traffic signals on an artificial grid-structured road network so as to ease the flow of traffic, and the use of D-Wave Systems' quantum anneale…
Quantum computers are ideal for solving chemistry problems due to their polynomial scaling with system size in contrast to classical computers which scale exponentially. Until now molecular energy calculations using quantum computing hardware have been limited to quantum simulators. In this paper, a new methodology is presented to calculate the vibrational spectrum of a molecule on a quantum annealer. The key idea of the method is a mapping of the ground state variational problem onto an Ising or quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem by expressing the expansion coefficient…

In solving optimization problems, objective functions generally need to be minimized or maximized. However, objective functions cannot always be formulated explicitly in a mathematical form for complicated problem settings. Although several regression techniques infer the approximate forms of objective functions, they are at times expensive to evaluate. Optimal points of "black-box" objective functions are computed in such scenarios, while effectively using a small number of clues. Recently, an efficient method by use of inference by sparse prior for a black-box objective function with binary …
In this work, we consider a practical railway dispatching problem: delay and conflict management on a single-track railway line. We examine the issue of train dispatching consequences caused by the arrival of an already delayed train to the segment being considered. This problem is computationally hard and often needs to be solved timely. Here, we introduce a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) model of the problem in question, compatible with the emerging quantum annealing technology. The model's instances can be executed on present-day quantum annealers. As a proof-of-concept,…
We introduce a novel quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulation for a classical problem in electrical engineering -- the optimal reconfiguration of distribution grids. For a given graph representing the grid infrastructure and known nodal loads, the problem consists in finding the spanning tree that minimizes the total link ohmic losses. A set of constraints is initially defined to impose topologically valid solutions. These constraints are then converted to a QUBO model as penalty terms. The electrical losses terms are finally added to the model as the objective function t…
The D-Wave quantum annealers make it possible to obtain high quality solutions of NP-hard problems by mapping a problem in a QUBO (quadratic unconstrained binary optimization) or Ising form to the physical qubit connectivity structure on the D-Wave chip. However, the latter is restricted in that only a fraction of all pairwise couplers between physical qubits exists. Modeling the connectivity structure of a given problem instance thus necessitates the computation of a minor embedding of the variables in the problem specification onto the logical qubits, which consist of several physical qubits…
Quantum annealing technologies aim to solve computational optimization and sampling problems. QPU (Quantum Processing Unit) machines such as the D-Wave system use the QUBO (Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization) formula to define model optimization problems for quantum annealing. This machine uses quantum effects to speed up computing time better than classical computers. We propose a vehicle routing problem that can be formulated in the QUBO model as a combinatorial problem, which gives the possible route solutions increases exponentially. The solution aims to optimize the vehicle's jou…

Quantum and Classical computers continue to work together in tight cooperation to solve difficult problems. The combination is thus suggested in recent times for decoding the Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, for the next generation Wireless Communication systems. In this paper we have worked out the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) formulation for Rayleigh Fading channels for two different scenarios: channel state fully known and not known. The resultant QUBO are solved using D-Wave 2000Q Quantum Annealer and the outputs from the Annealer are classically postprocessed, …

Despite being considered as the next frontier in computation, Quantum Computing is still in an early stage of development. Indeed, current commercial quantum computers suffer from some critical restraints, such as noisy processes and a limited amount of qubits, among others, that affect the performance of quantum algorithms. Despite these limitations, researchers have devoted much effort to propose different frameworks for efficiently using these Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. One of these procedures is D'WAVE Systems' quantum-annealer, which can be use to solve optimization …
Systems of linear equations are employed almost universally across a wide range of disciplines, from physics and engineering to biology, chemistry and statistics. Traditional solution methods such as Gaussian elimination become very time consuming for large matrices, and more efficient computational methods are desired. In the twilight of Moore's Law, quantum computing is perhaps the most direct path out of the darkness. There are two complementary paradigms for quantum computing, namely, gated systems and quantum annealers. In this paper, we express floating point operations such as division …
We benchmark the 5000+ qubit system Advantage coupled with the Hybrid Solver Service 2 released by D-Wave Systems Inc. in September 2020 by using a new class of optimization problems called garden optimization problems known in companion planting. These problems are scalable to an arbitrarily large number of variables and intuitively find application in real-world scenarios. We derive their QUBO formulation and illustrate their relation to the quadratic assignment problem. We demonstrate that the Advantage system and the new hybrid solver can solve larger problems in less time than their prede…
This paper assesses the performance of the D-Wave 2X (DW) quantum annealer for finding a maximum clique in a graph, one of the most fundamental and important NP-hard problems. Because the size of the largest graphs DW can directly solve is quite small (usually around 45 vertices), we also consider decomposition algorithms intended for larger graphs and analyze their performance. For smaller graphs that fit DW, we provide formulations of the maximum clique problem as a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem, which is one of the two input types (together with the Ising model)…
Renewable energy optimisation poses computationally-intensive challenges. Yet, often the continuous nature of the decision space precludes the use of many emerging, non-von-Neumann computing platforms such as quantum annealing, which are limited to discrete problems. We propose Quantum Annealing Continuous Optimisation (QuAnCO), a Trust Region (TR)-based algorithm, where the TR Newton sub-problem is transformed into Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimisation (QUBO), thereby allowing the use of Ising solvers such as D-Wave's quantum annealer. This transformation to QUBO is done by 1) using a h…

In this note, we describe an experiment on portfolio optimization using the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) formulation. The dataset we use is taken from a real-world problem for which a classical solution is currently deployed and used in production. In this work, carried out in a collaboration between the Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) and Reply, we derive a QUBO formulation, which we solve using various methods: two D-Wave hybrid solvers, that combine the employment of a quantum annealer together with classical methods, and a purely classical algorithm. Particular fo…
