Let $K$ be the field of Laurent series with complex coefficients, let $\mathcal{R}$ be the inverse limit of the standard-graded polynomial rings $K[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$, and let $\mathcal{R}^{\flat}$ be the subring of $\mathcal{R}$ consisting of elements with bounded denominators. In previous joint work with Erman and Sam, we showed that $\mathcal{R}$ and $\mathcal{R}^{\flat}$ (and many similarly defined rings) are abstractly polynomial rings, and used this to give new proofs of Stillman's conjecture. In this paper, we prove the complementary result that $\mathcal{R}$ is a polynomial algebra over $\mathcal{R}^{\flat}$.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. An ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be a big ideal (resp. an upper big ideal) if whenever $J\subsetneqq I$ (resp. $I\subsetneqq J$), $J^{n}\subsetneqq I^{n}$ (resp. $I^{n}\subsetneqq J^{n}$) for every $n\geq 1$; and $R$ itself is a big ideal ring provided that every ideal of $R$ is a big ideal. In this paper we study the notions of big ideals, upper big ideals and big ideal rings in different contexts of commutative rings such us integrally closed domains, pullbacks and trivial ring extensions etc. We show that the notions of big and upper big ideals are…
We previously showed that the inverse limit of standard-graded polynomial rings with perfect coefficient field is a polynomial ring, in an uncountable number of variables. In this paper, we show that the same result holds with arbitrary coefficient field. We also prove an analogous result for ultraproducts of polynomial rings.
This paper is concerned with existence of big tight closure test elements for a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$. Let $R^{\circ}$ denote the complement in $R$ of the union of the minimal prime ideals of $R$. A big test element for $R$ is an element of $R^{\circ}$ which can be used in every tight closure membership test for every $R$-module, and not just the finitely generated ones. The main results of the paper are that, if $R$ is excellent and satisfies condition $(R_0)$, and $c \in R^{\circ}$ is such that $R_c$ is Gorenstein and weakly $F$-regular, then some power …
Over a Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring, we characterize those modules that can be obtained as a direct limit of finitely generated maximal CM modules. We point out two consequences of this characterization: (1) Every balanced big CM module, in the sense of Hochster, can be written as a direct limit of small CM modules. In analogy with Govorov and Lazard's characterization of flat modules as direct limits of finitely generated free modules, one can view this as a "structure theorem" for balanced big CM modules. (2) Every finitely generated module has a preenvelope with respect to the class of fi…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that certain limits of polynomial rings are themselves polynomial rings, and show how this observation can be used to deduce some interesting results in commutative algebra. In particular, we give two new proofs of Stillman's conjecture. The first is similar to that of Ananyan-Hochster, though more streamlined; in particular, it establishes the existence of small subalgebras. The second proof is completely different, and relies on a recent noetherianity result of Draisma.
In two recent papers, the author has developed a theory of graded annihilators of left modules over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ of prime characteristic $p$, and has shown that this theory is relevant to the theory of test elements in tight closure theory. One result of that work was that, if $R$ is local and the $R$-module structure on the injective envelope $E$ of the simple $R$-module can be extended to a structure as a torsion-free left module over the Frobenius skew polynomial ring, then $R$ is $F$-pure and has a tight closure test element. One…
Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, and let $I\subset R$ be an ideal with minimal reduction $J$. In this paper we attach to the pair $I$, $J$ a non-standard bigraded module $Σ^{I,J}$. The study of the bigraded Hilbert function of $\SIJ$ allows us to prove a improved version of Wang's conjecture and a weak version of Sally's conjecture, both on the depth of the associated graded ring $gr_I(R)$. The module $\SIJ$ can be considered as a refinement of the Sally's module previously introduced by W. Vasconcelos.
Let $R$ be local Noetherian ring of depth at least two. We prove that there are indecomposable $R$-modules which are free on the punctured spectrum of constant, arbitrarily large, rank.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be a local complete intersection ring and let $I$ be an ideal in $A$. Let $M, N$ be finitely generated $A$-modules. Then for $l = 0,1$, the values $depth \ Ext^{2i+l}_A(M, N/I^nN)$ become independent of $i, n$ for $i,n \gg 0$. We also show that if $\mathfrak{p}$ is a prime ideal in $A$ then the $j^{th}$ Bass numbers $μ_j\big(\mathfrak{p},\ Ext^{2i+l}_A(M,N/{I^nN})\big)$ has polynomial growth in $(n,i)$ with rational coefficients for all sufficiently large $(n,i)$.
Let $R$ be a commutative, local, Noetherian ring. In a past article, the first author developed a theory of $R$-algebras, termed seeds, that can be mapped to balanced big Cohen-Macaulay $R$-algebras. In prime characteristic $p$, seeds can be characterized based on the existence of certain colon-killers, integral extensions of seeds are seeds, tensor products of seeds are seeds, and the seed property is stable under base change between complete, local domains. As a result, there exist directed systems of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras over complete, local domains. In this work, we will show that t…
Let ${\cal R}_{\mathbb{K}}[H]$ be the Hibi ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$ on a finite distributive lattice $H$, $P$ the set of join-irreducible elements of $H$ and $ω$ the canonical ideal of ${\cal R}_{\mathbb{K}}[H]$. We show the powers $ω^{(n)}$ of $ω$ in the group of divisors $\mathrm{Div}({\cal R}_{\mathbb{K}}[H])$ is identical with the ordinal powers of $ω$, describe the $\mathbb{K}$-vector space basis of $ω^{(n)}$ for $n\in\mathbb{Z}$. Further, we show that the fiber cones $\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}ω^n/\mathfrak{m}ω^n$ and $\bigoplus_{n\geq0}(ω^{(-1)})^n/\mathfrak{m}(ω^{(-1)})^n$ of $ω$ and $ω…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring, we say that $\mathcal{A}\subseteq Spec(R)$ has prime avoidance property, if $I\subseteq \bigcup_{P\in\mathcal{A}}P$ for an ideal $I$ of $R$, then there exists $P\in\mathcal{A}$ such that $I\subseteq P$. We exactly determine when $\mathcal{A}\subseteq Spec(R)$ has prime avoidance property. In particular, if $\mathcal{A}$ has prime avoidance property, then $\mathcal{A}$ is compact. For certain classical rings we show the converse holds (such as Bezout rings, $QR$-domains, zero-dimensional rings and $C(X)$). We give an example of a compact set $\mathcal{A}\subseteq …
We study a natural set of refinements of the Ehrhart series of a closed polytope, first considered by Chapoton. We compute the refined series in full generality for a simplex of dimension d, a cross-polytope of dimension d, respectively a hypercube of dimension d<4, using commutative algebra. We deduce summation formulae for products of q-integers with different arguments, generalizing a classical identity due to MacMahon and Carlitz. We also present a characterisation of a certain refined Eulerian polynomial in algebraic terms.
Let $Q$ be a Noetherian ring with finite Krull dimension and let $\mathbf{f}= f_1,... f_c$ be a regular sequence in $Q$. Set $A = Q/(\mathbf{f})$. Let $I$ be an ideal in $A$, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $A$-module with $\projdim_Q M$ finite. Set $\R = \bigoplus_{n\geq 0}I^n$, the Rees-Algebra of $I$. Let $N = \bigoplus_{j \geq 0}N_j$ be a finitely generated graded $\R$-module. We show that \[\bigoplus_{j\geq 0}\bigoplus_{i\geq 0} \Ext^{i}_{A}(M,N_j) \] is a finitely generated bi-graded module over $\Sc = \R[t_1,...,t_c]$. We give two applications of this result to local complete inters…
We associate to every equicharacteristic zero Noetherian local ring $R$ a faithfully flat ring extension which is an ultraproduct of rings of various prime characteristics, in a weakly functorial way. Since such ultraproducts carry naturally a non-standard Frobenius, we can define a new tight closure operation on $R$ by mimicking the positive characteristic functional definition of tight closure. This approach avoids the use of generalized Néron Desingularization and only relies on Rotthaus' result on Artin Approximation in characteristic zero. If $R$ is moreover equidimensional and universall…
There is a well known link from the first topic in the title to the third one. In this paper we thread that link through the second topic. The central result is a criterion for the tensor nilpotence of morphisms of perfect complexes over commutative noetherian rings, in terms of a numerical invariant of the complexes known as their level. Applications to local rings include a strengthening of the Improved New Intersection Theorem, short direct proofs of several results equivalent to it, and lower bounds on the ranks of the modules in every finite free complex that admits a structure of differe…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
Let $M, N$ be finite modules over a Noetherian local ring $R$, and let $G$ be the associated graded ring of $R$. We show that the bigraded Hilbert series of $gr(Tor^R(M,N))$ is obtained from that of $Tor^G(gr(M),gr(N))$ by negative consecutive cancellations, thus extending a theorem of Rossi and Sharifan.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity (not necessarily local) and $\frak a$ a proper ideal of $R$. We study the invariance of some classes of $\frak a$-relative Cohen-Macaulay modules under pure ring homomorphisms and ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension. Our results extend several results in the existing literature on homological modules.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. In this note, we study the property: If $ I \subsetneqq J$ are ideals in $R$, then $ I^n \subsetneqq J^n$ for all $ n\geq 1$. We define the notion of a big ideal (Definition 1.2). It is noted that the property has close relationship with the notions of reduction of an ideal and Ratliff-Rush ideal [7]. Apart from other results, it is proved that a Noetherian domain satifies the property if and only if every ideal in $R$ is a Ratliff-Rush ideal. We also prove that ideals having no proper reduction are big ideals, and maximal ideals in regular rings ar…
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over the field $K$, and let $I\subset S$ be a graded ideal. It is shown that the higher iterated Hilbert coefficients of the graded $S$-modules $\Tor_i^S(M,I^k)$ and $\Ext^i_S(M,I^k)$ are polynomial functions in $k$, and an upper bound for their degree is given. These results are derived by considering suitable bigraded modules.
Let $\{ R_n, {\mathfrak m}_n \}_{n \ge 0}$ be an infinite sequence of regular local rings with $R_{n+1}$ birationally dominating $R_n$ and ${\mathfrak m}_nR_{n+1}$ a principal ideal of $R_{n+1}$ for each $n$. We examine properties of the integrally closed local domain $S = \bigcup_{n \ge 0}R_n$.
Let $A$ be a local complete intersection ring. Let $M,N$ be two finitely generated $A$-modules and $I$ an ideal of $A$. We prove that \[ \bigcup_{i\geqslant 0}\bigcup_{n \geqslant 0}\mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^i(M,N/I^n N)\right) \] is a finite set. Moreover, we prove that there exist $i_0,n_0\geqslant 0$ such that for all $i\geqslant i_0$ and $n \geqslant n_0$, we have \[ \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2i}(M,N/I^nN)\right) = \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2 i_0}(M,N/I^{n_0}N)\right), \] \[ \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathrm{Ext}_A^{2i+1}(M,N/I^nN)\right) = \mathrm{Ass}_A\left(\mathr…
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. If $R$ has a canonical module, then there are some interesting results about duality for this situation. In this paper, we show that one can indeed obtain similar these results in the case $R$ has not a canonical module. Also, we give some characterizations of complete big Cohen-Macaulay modules of finite injective dimension and by using it some characterizations of Gorenstein modules over the $\fm$-adic completion of $R$ are obtained.
Several authors have introduced various type of coherent-like rings and proved analogous results on these rings. It appears that all these relative coherent rings and all the used techniques can be unified. In [2], several coherent-like rings are unified. In this manuscript we continue this work and we introduce coherent-like module which also emphasizes our point of view by unifying the existed relative coherent concepts. Several classical results are generalized and some new results are given.
We consider the following question: Is Gorenstein homology a X-pure homology, in the sense defined by Warfield, for a class X of modules? Let GP denote the class of Gorenstein projective modules. We prove that over a commutative Noetherian ring R of finite Krull dimension, Gorenstein homology is a GP-pure homology if and only if R is virtually Gorenstein.
Let $F$ be a field. For each nonempty subset $X$ of the Zariski-Riemann space of valuation rings of $F$, let ${A}(X) = \bigcap_{V \in X}V$ and ${J}(X) = \bigcap_{V \in X}{\mathfrak M}_V$, where ${\mathfrak M}_V$ denotes the maximal ideal of $V$. We examine connections between topological features of $X$ and the algebraic structure of the ring ${A}(X)$. We show that if ${J}(X) \ne 0$ and $A(X)$ is a completely integrally closed local ring that is not a valuation ring of $F$, then there is a subspace $Y$ of the space of valuation rings of $F$ that is perfect in the patch topology such that ${A}(…
For a big class of commutative rings R every continuous R-automorphism of R[[X_1,...,X_n]] with the identity linear part is in the commutator subgroup of Aut(R[[X_1,...,X_n]]). An explicit bound for the number of the involved commutators and a K-theoretic interpretation of this result are provided.
Let R be a unitary ring of finite cardinality P^k, where p is a prime number and $p\nmid k$. We show that if the group of units of $R$ has at most one subgroup of order $p$, then $R\cong A\bigoplus B,$ where $B$ is a finite ring of order $k$ and $A$ is a ring of cardinality $p^β$ which is one of the six explicitly described types.
Let $M$ be a finitely generated bigraded module over the standard bigraded polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,...,x_m, y_1,...,y_n]$, and let $Q=(y_1,...,y_n)$. The local cohomology modules $H^k_Q(M)$ are naturally bigraded, and the components $H^k_Q(M)_j=\Dirsum_iH^k_Q(M)_{(i,j)}$ are finitely generated graded $K[x_1,...,x_m]$-modules. In this paper we study the regularity of $H^k_Q(M)_j$, and show in several cases that $\reg H^k_Q(M)_j$ is linearly bounded as a function of $j$.
We define the concept of regularity for bigraded modules and bigraded polynomial ring. In this setting we prove analogs of some of the classical results on $m$-regularity for graded modules over polynomial algebras.
Given an ideal of forms in an algebra (polynomial ring, tensor algebra, exterior algebra, Lie algebra, bigraded polynomial ring), we consider the Hilbert series of the factor ring. We concentrate on the minimal Hilbert series, which is achieved when the forms are generic. In the polynomial ring we also consider the opposite case of maximal series. This is mainly a survey article, but we give a lot of problems and conjectures. The only novel results concern the maximal series in the polynomial ring.
We describe "quasi canonical modules" for modular invariant rings $R$ of finite group actions on factorial Gorenstein domains. From this we derive a general "quasi Gorenstein criterion" in terms of certain 1-cocycles. This generalizes a recent result of A. Braun for linear group actions on polynomial rings, which itself generalizes a classical result of Watanabe for non-modular invariant rings. We use an explicit classification of all reflexive rank one $R$-modules, which is given in terms of the class group of $R$, or in terms of $R$-semi-invariants. This result is implicitly contained in a p…
