We have synthesized Fe$_{1+y}$Te thin films by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) under Te-limited growth conditions. We found that epitaxial layer-by-layer growth is possible for a wide range of excess Fe values, wider than expected from what is known on the bulk material. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L$_{2,3}$ and Te M$_{4,5}$ edges, we observed that films with high excess Fe contain ferromagnetic clusters while films with lower excess Fe remain nonmagnetic. Moreover, x-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that it is possible to obtain films with very similar electronic structure as that of a high quality bulk single crystal Fe$_{1.14}$Te. Our results suggest that MBE with Te-limited growth may provide an opportunity to synthesize FeTe films with smaller amounts of excess Fe as to come closer to a possible superconducting phase.
FeTe is known to become a superconductor when doped with oxygen. Using layer by layer growth of single crystal films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), we have studied how oxygen incorporates. If oxygen is supplied during growth of a layer, it substitutes for tellurium inhomogeneously in oxygen domains that are not associated with superconductivity. When oxygen is supplied after growth, it diffuses homogeneously into the crystalline film and incorporates interstitially. Only the interstitial oxygen causes superconductivity to emerge. This suggests that the superconductivity observed in this mate…
Using a CO$_2$ laser to directly heat the crystals from the back side, SrTiO$_3$ substrates may be thermally prepared in situ for epitaxy without the need for ex-situ etching and annealing. We find that the formation of large terraces with straight steps at 900-1100 °C is independent from the formation of the ideal surface reconstruction for epitaxy, which requires temperatures in excess of 1200 °C to complete. The process may be universal, at least for perovskite oxide surfaces, as it also works, at different temperatures, for LaAlO$_3$ and NdGaO$_3$, two other widely used oxide substrate mat…

We observe a catalytic mechanism during the growth of III-O and IV-O materials by suboxide molecular-beam epitaxy ($S$-MBE). By supplying the molecular catalysts In$_2$O and SnO we increase the growth rates of Ga$_2$O$_3$ and In$_2$O$_3$. This catalytic action is explained by a metastable adlayer $A$, which increases the reaction probability of the reactants Ga$_2$O and In$_2$O with active atomic oxygen, leading to an increase of the growth rates of Ga$_2$O$_3$ and In$_2$O$_3$. We derive a model for the growth of binary III-O and IV-O materials by $S$-MBE and apply these findings to a generali…
The surface electronic properties of the important topological insulator Bi2Te3 are shown to be robust under an extended surface preparation procedure which includes exposure to atmosphere and subsequent cleaning and recrystallization by an optimized in-situ sputter-anneal procedure under ultra high vacuum conditions. Clear Dirac-cone features are displayed in high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra from the resulting samples, indicating remarkable insensitivity of the topological surface state to cleaning-induced surface roughness.
Issues of morphology, nucleation and growth of Ge cluster arrays deposited by ultrahigh vacuum molecular beam epitaxy on the Si(001) surface are considered. Difference in nucleation of quantum dots during Ge deposition at low (<600 deg C) and high (>600 deg. C) temperatures is studied by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. The atomic models of growth of both species of Ge huts---pyramids and wedges---are proposed. The growth cycle of Ge QD arrays at low temperatures is explored. A problem of lowering of the array formation temperature is discussed with the focus on CMOS compatibilit…
The selective area growth of Ga-assisted GaAs nanowires (NWs) with a high vertical yield on Si(111) substrates is still challenging. Here, we explore different surface preparations and their impact on NW growth by molecular beam epitaxy. We show that boiling the substrate in ultrapure water leads to a significant improvement in the vertical yield of NWs (realizing 80%) grown on substrates patterned by electron-beam lithography (EBL). Tentatively, we attribute this improvement to a reduction in atomic roughness of the substrate in the mask opening. On this basis, we transfer our growth results …
Strain engineering with different substrate facets is promising for tuning functional properties of thin film perovskite oxides. By choice of facet, different surface symmetries and chemical bond directions for epitaxial interfaces can be tailored. Here, preparation of well-defined pseudo-cubic (111)-oriented orthorhombic substrates of DyScO3 , GdScO3 , and NdGaO3 is reported. The choice of orthorhombic facet, (011)o or (101)o , both corresponding to pseudo-cubic (111)pc , gives vicinal surfaces with single or double (111pc layer terrace step heights, respectively, impacting subsequent thin fi…
We have investigated the magnetic and chemical properties of very thin Cr films, CrAs, and arsenized Cr grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Ga As (001), using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry. Distintic preparation procedures have been used with the purpose to undestand the origin of the ferromagneti signal observed for this system. It results that Ga segregation and chemical reactivity between Ga and Cr have negligible contribution in the formation of different thi films. A clear ferromagnetic response even at room temperature suggests the existence of a very thin interf…
The successful preparation of superconducting alkali fulleride (A$_x$C$_{60}$, A = K, Rb, Cs) films using state-of-the-art molecular beam epitaxy overcomes the disadvantages of the air-sensitivity and phase separation in bulk A$_x$C$_{60}$, enabling for the first time a direct investigation of the superconductivity in alkali fullerides on the molecular scale. In this paper, we briefly review recent cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy results of the structural, electronic, and superconducting properties of the fcc A$_x$C$_{60}$ films grown on graphitized SiC substrates. Robust $s$-wave supe…
