We consider an asymptotically free vectorial gauge theory, with gauge group $G$ and $N_f$ fermions in a representation $R$ of $G$, having an infrared fixed point of the renormalization group. We calculate scheme-independent series expansions for the anomalous dimensions of higher-spin bilinear fermion operators at this infrared fixed point up to $O(Δ_f^3)$, where $Δ_f$ is an $N_f$-dependent expansion variable. Our general results are evaluated for several special cases, including the case $G={\rm SU}(N_c)$ with $R$ equal to the fundamental and adjoint representations.
We propose a novel renormalization scheme for the hadronic operators. As an example, we show the numerical simulation result for the anomalous dimension of the pseudo scalar operator of the SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 12 fundamental fermions. The anomalous dimension of the pseudo scalar operator is related with the mass renormalization factor of the fermion thought the partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC) relation. We derive the mass anomalous dimension at the infrared fixed point (IRFP) of the theory, and find that it is given by gamma_m^*= 0.044_{-0.024}^{+0.025} (stat.)_{-…
It is argued on general ground and demonstrated in the particular example of the Chiral Schwinger Model that there is nothing wrong with apparently anomalous chiral gauge theory. If quantised correctly, there should be no gauge anomaly and chiral gauge theory should be renormalisable and unitary, even in higher dimensions and with non-abelian gauge groups. Furthermore, mass terms for gauge bosons and chiral fermions can be generated without spoiling the gauge invariance.
We consider the class of gauges that interpolates between Landau- and Coulomb-gauge QCD, and show the non-renormalisation of the two independent ghost-gluon vertices. This implies the existence of two RG-invariant running couplings, one of which is interpreted as an RG-invariant gauge parameter. We also present the asymptotic infrared limit of solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in interpolating gauges. The infrared critical exponents of these solutions as well as the resulting infrared fixed point of one of the couplings are independent of the gauge parameter. This coupling also has a …
We study the evolution of an asymptotically free vectorial SU($N$) gauge theory from the ultraviolet to the infrared and the resultant phase structure in the general case in which the theory contains fermions transforming according to several different representations of the gauge group. We discuss the sequential fermion condensation and dynamical mass generation that occur, and comment on the effect of bare fermion mass terms.
We present the first comprehensive analysis of the unitarity thresholds and anomalous thresholds of scattering amplitudes at two loops and beyond based on the loop-tree duality, and show how non-causal unphysical thresholds are locally cancelled in an efficient way when the forest of all the dual on-shell cuts is considered as one. We also prove that soft and collinear singularities at two loops and beyond are restricted to a compact region of the loop three-momenta, which is a necessary condition for implementing a local cancellation of loop infrared singularities with the ones appearing in r…
We focus on a non-abelian gauge field coupled to a single (but general) representation of a family of Nf fermions. By using the same machinery that had allowed us to evaluate the sub-leading large-Nf term of the five-loop Beta function earlier, we here report on a confirmation of the all-Nf result that has in the meantime been published by another group. Furthermore, in order to push forward the 5-loop renormalization program regarding gauge parameter dependence, we present the linear terms of the complete set of anomalous dimensions, in an expansion in the covariant gauge parameter around the…
We address the effect of an anomalous triple gauge boson couplings on a physical observable for the electroweak sector of the Standard Model, when the $SU(2)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{Y}$ symmetry is spontaneously broken by the Higgs mechanism to $U(1)_{em}$. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variable formalism which is alternative to the Wilson loop approach. Our result shows that the interaction energy is the sum of a Yukawa and a linear potential, leading to the confinement of static probe charges. The point we wish to emphasize, however, is that…
In an attempt to implement gauge mediation in string theory, we study string effective supergravity models of supersymmetry breaking, containing anomalous gauge factors. We discuss subtleties related to gauge invariance and the stabilization of the Green-Schwarz moduli, which set non-trivial constraints on the transmission of supersymmetry breaking to MSSM via gauge interactions. Given those constraints, it is difficult to obtain the dominance of gauge mediation over gravity mediation. Furthermore, generically the gauge contributions to soft terms contain additional non-standard terms coming f…
We work out in the forward limit and up to order $e^6$ in perturbation theory the collinear divergences. In this kinematical regime we discover new collinear divergences that we argue can be only cancelled using quantum interference with processes contributing to the gauge anomaly. This rules out the possibility of a quantum consistent and anomaly free theory with massless charges and long range interactions. We use the anomalous threshold singularities to derive a gravitational lower bound on the mass of the lightest charged fermion.
We propose an attractive scenario of grand unified theories in which doublet-triplet splitting is beautifully realized in SO(10) unification using Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. The anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry plays essential roles in the doublet-triplet splitting mechanism. It is interesting that the anomalous U(1)_A charges determine the unification scale and mass spectrum of additional particles as well as the order of Yukawa couplings of quarks and leptons. For the neutrino sector, bi-maximal mixing angles are naturally obtained and proton decay via dimension 5 operators is suppressed. …
The infrared behaviour of gluon and ghost propagators, ghost-gluon vertex and three-gluon vertex is investigated for both the covariant Landau and the non-covariant Coulomb gauge. Assuming infrared ghost dominance, we find a unique infrared exponent in the d=4 Landau gauge, while in the d=3+1 Coulomb gauge we find two different infrared exponents. We also show that a finite dressing of the ghost-gluon vertex has no influence on the infrared exponents. Finally, we determine the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex analytically and calculate it numerically at the symmetric point in the C…
Supersymmetric Yang-Mills-theories with local gauge coupling have a new type of anomalous breaking, which appears as a breaking of supersymmetry in the Wess-Zumino-gauge. The anomalous breaking generates the two-loop order of the gauge $β$-function in terms of the one-loop $β$-function and the anomaly coefficient. We determine the anomaly coefficient in the Wess-Zumino-gauge by solving the relevant supersymmetry identities. For this purpose we use a background gauge and show that the anomaly coefficient is uniquely determined by convergent one-loop integrals. When evaluating the one-loop diagr…
We extend the ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$ result of the analytic calculation of the quark mass anomalous dimension in pQCD [1] to the case of a generic gauge group. We present explicit formulas which express the relevant renormalization constants in terms of four-loop massless propagators. We also use our result to shed new light on the old puzzle of the absence of even zetas in results of perturbative calculations for a class of physical observables.
We extend our previous results on the evolution of quantum fermi fields in Minkowski gauge field backgrounds to the case of spontaneously broken gauge theories. We obtain a selection rule which relates the amount of fermion number violation to the change in Higgs winding number of the configuration. This selection rule is applicable to any classical solution which dissipates at both early and late times.
We implement a dynamical resummation method (DRM) as an extension of the dynamical renormalization group to study the time evolution of infrared dressing in non-gauge theories. Super renormalizable and renormalizable models feature infrared divergences similar to those of a theory at a critical point, motivating a renormalization group improvement of the propagator that yields a power law decay of the survival probability $\propto t^{-Δ}$. The (DRM) confirms this decay, yields the dressed state and determines that the anomalous dimension $Δ$ is completely determined by the slope of the spectra…
Nonperturbative and lattice methods indicate that Gribov copies modify the infrared behavior of gauge theories and cause a suppression of gluon propagation. We investigate whether this can be implemented in a modified perturbation theory. The minimal modification proceeds via a nonlocal generalization of the Fadeev-Popov ghost that automatically decouples from physical states. The expected scale invariance of the physics associated with Gribov copies leads to the emergence of a nontrivial infrared fixed point. For a range of a scaling exponent the gauge bosons exhibit unparticlelike behavior i…
Recently we proposed a natural scenario of grand unified theories with anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry, in which doublet-triplet splitting is realized in SO(10) unification using Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism and realistic quark and lepton mass matrices can be obtained in a simple way. The scenario has an additional remarkable feature that the symmetry breaking scale and the mass spectrum of super heavy particles are determined essentially by anomalous U(1)_A charges. Therefore once all the anomalous U(1)_A charges are fixed, the gauge coupling flows can be calculated. We examine several models…
We present the results for three-loop gauge field anomalous dimensions in the SM calculated in the background field gauge within the unbroken phase of the model. The results are valid for the general background field gauge parameterized by three independent parameters. Both quantum and background fields are considered. The former are used to find three-loop anomalous dimensions for the gauge-fixing parameters, and the latter allow one to obtain the three-loop SM gauge beta-functions. Independence of beta-functions of gauge-fixing parameters serves as a validity check of our final results.
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries in type II orientifold theories show some unexpected properties. In contrast to the heterotic case, the masses of the gauge bosons are in general of order of the string scale even in the absence of large Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. Despite this fact, the notion of heterotic-type II orientifold duality remains a useful concept, although this symmetry does not seem to hold in all cases considered. We analyse the status of this duality symmetry, clarify the properties of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in the orientifold picture and comment on the consequences for phenom…
In the exploration of viable models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, it is essential to locate the lower end of the conformal window and know the mass anomalous dimensions there for a variety of gauge theories. We calculate, with the Schrödinger functional scheme, the running coupling constant and the mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) gauge theory with six massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. The calculations are performed on $6^4$ - $24^4$ lattices over a wide range of lattice bare couplings to take the continuum limit. The discretization errors for both quant…
We show that experiments at the Forward Physics Facility, planned to operate near the ATLAS interaction point during the LHC high-luminosity era, will be able to probe predictions of Little String Theory by searching for anomalous U(1) gauge bosons living in the bulk. The interaction of the abelian broken gauge symmetry with the Standard Model is generated at the one-loop level through kinetic mixing with the photon. Gauge invariant generation of mass for the U(1) gauge boson proceeds via the Higgs mechanism in spontaneous symmetry breaking, or else through anomaly-cancellation appealing to St…
We show the numerical simulation result for the mass anomalous dimension of the SU($3$) gauge theory coupled to $N_f = 12$ fundamental fermions. We use two independent methods, namely the step scaling method and the hyperscaling method of the Dirac mode number, to determine the anomalous dimension in the vicinity of the infrared fixed point of the theory. We show the continuum extrapolations keeping the renormalized coupling constant as a reference in both analyses. Furthermore, some recent works seems to suggest the lower boundary of the conformal window of the SU($3$) gauge theory exists bet…
We investigate the infrared behaviour of gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD by means of an exact renormalisation group equation. We explain how, in general, the infrared momentum structure of Green functions can be extracted within this approach. An optimisation procedure is devised to remove residual regulator dependences. In Landau gauge QCD this framework is used to determine the infrared leading terms of the propagators. The results support the Kugo-Ojima confinement scenario. Possible extensions are discussed.
We propose to investigate infrared properties of gluon and ghost propagators related to the so-called Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario, originally formulated for Landau and Coulomb gauges, for other gauges as well. We present results of our investigation of SU(2) lattice gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge (MAG), focusing on the behavior of propagators in the off-diagonal (i.e. non-Abelian) sector. We also comment on our preliminary results for general linear covariant gauges, in particular for Feynman gauge.
We calculate the electromagnetic fermion form-factors induced by the anomalous gauge boson interactions contained in the operators ODW and ODB. Other results regarding anomalous triple gauge boson interactions are briefly overviewed. We study the interplay between vertex corrections and gauge boson self-energies extended to the longitudinal degrees of freedom. The physical couplings to an external electromagnetic field are then derived.
We show that the anomalous magnetic moment of fermion in the gauge-Higgs unification is finite in any spacetime dimensions, which is a new predictive physical observable similar to the Higgs mass.
We study the transformation properties of a scalar-tensor theory, coupled to fermions, under the Weyl rescaling associated with a transition from the Jordan to the Einstein frame. We give a simple derivation of the corresponding modification to the gauge couplings. After changing frame, this gives rise to a direct coupling between the scalar and the gauge fields.
Using the Zumino identities it is shown that in a class of non-local gauges, massless QED_3 has an infrared behaviour of a conformal field theory with a continuously varying anomalous dimension of the fermion. In the usual Lorentz gauge, the fermion propagator falls off exponentially for a large separation, but this apparent fermion mass is a gauge artifact.
We extend the gauge coupling of Super-Yang-Mills theories to an external superfield composed out of a chiral and an antichiral superfield and perform renormalization in the extended model. In one-loop order we find an anomalous breaking of supersymmetry which vanishes in the limit to constant coupling. The anomaly arises form non-local contributions and its coefficient is gauge and scheme independent and strictly of one-loop order. In the perturbative framework of the construction the anomaly cannot be absorbed as a counterterm to the classical action. With local gauge coupling the symmetric c…
Anomalous sector of chiral Lagrangian is calculated in a gauge invariant, nonlocal, dynamical quark model. The Wess-Zumino term is proved coming from two kinds of sources, one is independent on and another dependent on dynamical quark self energy $Σ(k^2)$. $p^6$ and more higher order anomalous sectors come only from $Σ(k^2)$ dependent source. After some cancellation, standard Wess-Zumino action is obtained.
An analysis is given of the dynamical symmetry breaking of semi-simple gauge groups. We construct a class of renormalizable gauge theories for the dynamically broken topcolor and technicolor interactions. It is shown that a four-Fermi interaction in the strong coupling phase emerges by the tumbling of semi-simple gauge groups in the low energy region. In our models the topcolor interaction provides the top quark with a large anomalous dimension.
We present analytical five-loop results for the quark mass and quark field anomalous dimensions, for a general gauge group and in the MSbar scheme. We confirm the values known for the gauge group SU(3) from an independent calculation, and find full agreement with results available from large-Nf studies.
The anomalous dimension for the gauge-invariant-canonical decomposition of the energy-momentum tensor for quarks and gluons is studied by the background field method. In particular, the consistency between the background field method and the renormalization in the gluonic sectors is investigated. The analysis shows that the naive gauge-invariant-decomposition has an inconsistency between its definition and the renormalization in the background field method. Although we try to consider a trick to overcome this inconsistency in computing the anomalous dimension, the gauge-parameter dependence re…
The absence of a light Higgs boson causes vector boson couplings to become strong at 1 TeV. A general framework for a systematic and consistent treatment is provided by effective theories of electroweak symmetry breaking. Already in next-to-leading order there appear quartic gauge couplings that go beyond the standard model and are hence called anomalous. We investigate intermediate three gauge boson states $W^+W^- Z$ and $ZZZ$ occurring in six quark production in electron positron collisions under the conditions of the International Linear Collider. We perform a sensitivity analysis of the re…
We derive one loop constraints on the anomalous quartic gauge couplings using a general non-forward dispersion relation for the elastic scattering amplitude of two longitudinally polarized vector bosons. We compare this result with another one derived by the assumption that the underlying theory satisfies the causality principle of Special Relativity and show that this latter is more constraining.
We discuss anomalous gauge boson couplings at hadron supercolliders. We review the usual description of these couplings, as well as the studies of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector. We present an effective field theory formulation of the problem that relates the two subjects, and that allows a consistent and systematic analysis. We end with some phenomenology.
We analyze, in a rather general model where anomalous triple gauge couplings are present, the visible effects in R$_b$ (measured at LEP1), in W pair production (to be measured at LEP2) and in the muon anomalous magnetic moment (to be measured at BNL). From the combination of the three experiments a remarkable improvement on the pure LEP2 constraints is obtained.
The effect of anomalous gauge couplings on polarized $e^- e^-$ scattering cross sections is examined. It turns out that different combinations of beam polarizations provide constraints that are complementary to each other and to those obtained from other experiments, such as $e^+ e^-$, $e^- γ$ and $γγ$ collisions.
We consider supersymmetric unification based on the gauge symmetry SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R supplemented by an anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry. Realistic fermion masses and mixings are realized, including large mixings in the neutrino sector. We also consider the supersymmetric flavor problem, gauge coupling unification and proton decay. The dominant proton decay mode is expected to be p-> e^+π^0 and the lifetime is estimated to be \sim 10^{34}-10^{35} years.
The gauge dependence in the anomalous dimension of the gauge-invariant-canonical-energy-momentum tensor for proton is studied by the background field method. The naive calculation shows the problem, the absence of the counter term in the gluonic sectors. The analysis shows that the result [Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 062001 (2009)] is derived from the background field method after we introduced a trick to avoid the problem except for the gluon-to-gluon sector; it is gauge dependent. The possible reason of this gauge-dependent result comes from the nontrivial treatment of the condition $…
This article reviews some recent developments in the analysis of anomalous triple and quartic vector boson couplings that have been discussed at the UK Phenomenology Workshop on Collider Physics 1999 in Durham.
We study $ε'/ε$ in the Standard Model and $ε'/ε$ due to anomalous $WWγ$ and $WWZ$ interactions %using recent result on the top quark mass from CDF. as a function of the top quark mass. In the Standard Model, $ε'/ε$ is in the range $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-4}$ for the central value of top quark mass reported by CDF. The anomalous gauge couplings can have large contributions to the $CP$ violating $I=2$ amplitude in $K \rightarrow ππ$. Within the allowed regions for the anomalous gauge couplings, $ε'/ε$ can be dramatically different from the standard model prediction.
We investigate the status of models containing exotic fermions or extra Z-like neutral gauge bosons in the light of the recent data on anomalous magnetic moment of muon. We find that it is possible to extract interesting bounds on the parameters characterizing such models. The bounds are particularly strong if the new flavour-changing neutral currents are axial vectorlike.
All lowest-order amplitudes for e+e- --> 4f+gamma are calculated including five anomalous quartic gauge-boson couplings that are allowed by electromagnetic gauge invariance and the custodial SU(2)_c symmetry. Three of these anomalous couplings correspond to the operators L_0, L_c, and L_n that have been constrained by the LEP collaborations in WWgamma production. The anomalous couplings are incorporated in the Monte Carlo generator RACOONWW. Moreover, for the processes e+e- --> 4f+gamma RACOONWW is improved upon including leading universal electroweak corrections such as initial-state radiatio…
In this version we have corrected some minor errors in the tables, corrected typos, and added a reference. We have also updated our comparison with earlier workers. Figures are now included as uuencoded compressed tar files.
No gauge invariant regularization is available for the perturbative calculation of the standard model. One has to add finite counter terms to restore gauge symmetry for the renormalized amplitudes. The muon anomalous magnetic moment can be accurately measured but the experimental result does not entirely agree with the theoretical calculation from the standard model. This paper is to compute the contributions to the muon gyromagnetic ratio $g_μ$ due to the finite counter terms. The result obtained is found to be far from sufficient to explain the discrepancy between theory and experiment.
Present experiments are sensitive to very weakly coupled extra gauge symmetries which motivates further investigation of their appearance in string theory compactifications and subsequent properties. We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale saturates the current LHC limit and that the theory is weakly coupled, we show that (anomalous) $U(1)$ gauge bosons which prop…
Low energy (1-loop) constraints on anomalous triple gauge boson vertices (TGV's) are revisited and compared to the sensitivity achievable at LEP II and at future linear $e^+e^-$ colliders. The analysis is performed within the framework of an effective Lagrangian of gauge invariant dimension six operators with the gauge bosons and a single Higgs doublet field as the low energy degrees of freedom. The low energy data do not directly bound TGV's but they provide strong constraints on models which lead to anomalous gauge boson interactions in addition to other low energy effects.
We compare vector boson fusion and quark antiquark annihilation production of vector boson pairs at the LHC and include the effects of anomalous couplings. Results are given for confidence intervals for anomalous couplings at the LHC assuming that measurements will be in agreement with the standard model. We consider all couplings of the general triple vector boson vertex and their correlations. In addition we consider a gauge invariant dimension-six extension of the standard model. Analytical results for the cross sections for quark antiquark annihilation and vector boson fusion with anomalou…
We studied the dimension-6 leptonic anomalous gauge couplings in the formulation of linearly realized gauge symmetry effective Lagrangian and investigated the constraints on these anomalous couplings from the existed experimental data including LEP2 and $W$/$Z$ boson decay. Some bounds of $O(0.1-10){\rm TeV}^{-2}$ on four relevant anomalous couplings are given by the Z factories. We studied the sensitivity of testing the leptonic anomalous couplings via the process $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+W^-$ at future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. We discussed different sensitivities to anomalous couplings at pol…
We show a new and simple model which induces large Majorana masses of right-handed neutrinos. It is based on U(1)_X anomalous gauge symmetry, which is cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism. These Majorana masses can solve the solar neutrino problem by the vacuum oscillation mechanism. The superpotential of this model is scale invariant. The field contents are simple extensions of the MSSM, which have four standard gauge singlet fields, two extra vector-like fields, and right-handed neutrinos in addition to the MSSM.
The recent results of the CLEO Collaboration on both inclusive and exclusive radiative $B$ decays are combined with those of the UA2 Collaboration on $Wγ$ production to highly constrain the anomalous trilinear gauge couplings of the $W$. The theoretical analysis of the $b \to sγ$ process employs, next-to-leading order operator coefficient evolution as well as QCD bremsstrahlung and appropriate phase space corrections.
Among solutions of the strong CP problem, the "invisible" axion in the narrow axion window is argued to be the remaining possibility among natural solutions on the smallness of $\barθ$. Related to the gravity spoil of global symmetries, some prospective "invisible" axions from theory point of view are discussed. In all these discussions including the observational possibility and cosmological constraints, including a safe domain wall problem, must be included.
