In this paper, we study the simultaneous controllability of wave systems in an open domain of R d , d $\in$ N *. We obtain a partial controllability result on a co-finite dimensional space for wave equations coupled by a single control function. We use microlocal defect measures and the unique continuation property of eigenfunctions to prove that an appropriate observability inequality holds for wave equations with space varying and different speeds coupled by a single control function. For the unique continuation property of eigenfunctions, we construct a counterexample to show that in some metrics, the unique continuation property does not hold. Moreover, we study different conditions to ensure the unique continuation property. We also extend our result to the case of constant coefficients and possibly multiple control functions. In this context, we prove the controllability property is equivalent to an appropriate Kalman rank condition.
We investigate the internal controllability of the wave equation with structural damping on the one dimensional torus. We assume that the control is acting on a moving point or on a moving small interval with a constant velocity. We prove that the null controllability holds in some suitable Sobolev space and after a fixed positive time independent of the initial conditions.
In this paper we prove that the Ball-Marsden-Slemrod controllability obstruction also holds for nonlinear equations, with integrable bilinear controls. We first show an abstract result and then we apply it to nonlinear wave equations. The first application to the Sine-Gordon equation directly follows from the abstract result, and the second application concerns the cubic wave/Klein-Gordon equation and needs some additional work.

We consider both the internal and boundary controllability problems for wave equations under non-negativity constraints on the controls. First, we prove the steady state controllability property with nonnegative controls for a general class of wave equations with time-independent coefficients. According to it, the system can be driven from a steady state generated by a strictly positive control to another, by means of nonnegative controls, when the time of control is long enough. Secondly, under the added assumption of conservation and coercivity of the energy, controllability is proved betwee…
In this paper, we deal with the boundary controllability and boundary stabilizability of the 1D wave equation in non-cylindrical domain of the form ($α(t)<x<β(t)$). By using the characteristics method, we prove under a natural assumption on the boundary functions that the 1D wave equation is controllable and stabilizable from one side of the boundary. Furthermore, the control function and the decay rate of solution are given explicitly
We prove the semi-global controllability and stabilization of the $(1+1)$-dimensional wave maps equation with spatial domain $\mathbb{S}^1$ and target $\mathbb{S}^k$. First we show that damping stabilizes the system when the energy is strictly below the threshold $2π$, where harmonic maps appear as obstruction for global stabilization. Then, we adapt an iterative control procedure to get low-energy exact controllability of the wave maps equation. This result is optimal in the case $k=1$.
This paper is devoted to study exact controllability of two one-dimensional coupled wave equations with first-order coupling terms with coefficients depending on space and time. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for both exact controllability in high frequency in the general case and the unique continuation in the cascade case.
We prove local exact controllability in arbitrary short time of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation with free surface, in the case with surface tension. This proves that one can generate arbitrary small amplitude periodic gravity-capillary water waves by blowing on a localized portion of the free surface of a liquid.
Exact controllability is proven on a graph with cycle. The controls can be a mix of controls applied at the boundary and interior vertices. The method of proof first uses a dynamical argument to prove shape controllability and velocity controllability, thereby solving their associated moment problems. This enables one to solve the moment problem associated to exact controllability. In the case of a single control, either boundary or interior, it is shown that exact controllability fails.
The symmetric regularized long wave system (SRLW) is a model for the weakly nonlinear ion acoustic and space-charge waves, which was introduced by C. Seyler and D. Fenstermacher. In this paper, we investigated the wellposedness and controllability properties of the generalized symmetric regularized long wave system (g-SRLW) in different structures (periodic and bounded domains). Firstly, the wellposedness and the exact controllability results for both linear and nonlinear g-SRLW system posed on the one-dimensional torus are obtained under the effect of a distributed moving control. Second, we …
Local exact controllability of the 1D NLS (subject to zero boundary conditions) with distributed control is shown to hold in a $H^1$--neighbourhood of the nonlinear ground state. The Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM), due to J.-L. Lions, is applied to the linear control problem that arises by linearization around the ground state. The application of HUM crucially depends on the spectral properties of the linearized NLS operator which are given in detail.
Consider the acoustic wave equation with unknown, not necessarily smooth, wave speed $c$. We propose and study an iterative control procedure that erases the history of a wave field up to a given depth in a medium, without any knowledge of $c$. In the context of seismic or ultrasound imaging, this can be viewed as removing multiple reflections from normal-directed wavefronts.
We obtain a novel interior control result for wave equations on time dependent domains. This is done by deriving a suitable Carleman estimate and proving the corresponding observability inequality. We consider the wave equation with time dependent lower order coefficients, without any time analyticity assumptions. Moreover, we obtain improved control regions when compared with standard Carleman methods.
The paper is devoted to the exact controllability of a system of coupled abstract wave equations when the control is exerted on a part of the boundary by means of one control. We give a Kalman type condition and give a description of the attainable set.
The problem of the exact bounded control of oscillations of the two-dimensional wave equation is considered. Control force is applied to the boundary of the membrane, which is located in a domain on a plane. The goal of the control is to drive the system to rest in a finite time.
In this paper, we deal with the boundary controllability of a one-dimensional degenerate and singular wave equation with degeneracy and singularity occurring at the boundary of the spatial domain. Exact boundary controllability is proved in the range of subcritical/critical potentials and for sufficiently large time, through a boundary controller acting away from the degenerate/singular point. By duality argument, we reduce the problem to an observability estimate for the corresponding adjoint system, which is proved by means of the multiplier method and a new special Hardy-type inequality.
In this paper we introduce a finite-parameters feedback control algorithm for stabilizing solutions of various classes of damped nonlinear wave equations. Specifically, stabilization the zero steady state solution of initial boundary value problems for nonlinear weakly and strongly damped wave equations, nonlinear wave equation with nonlinear damping term and some related nonlinear wave equations, introducing a feedback control terms that employ parameters, such as, finitely many Fourier modes, finitely many volume elements and finitely many nodal observables and controllers. In addition, we a…
We consider a degenerate wave equation with drift in presence of a leading operator which is not in divergence form. We provide some conditions for the boundary controllability of the associated Cauchy problem.
We study in this article decay rates for Kelvin-Voigt damped wave equations under a geometric control condition. We prove that when the damping coefficient is sufficiently smooth ($C^1$ vanishing nicely) we show that exponential decay follows from geometric control conditions (see~\cite{BuCh, Te12} for similar results under stronger assumptions on the damping function).
We will consider exact controllability of the distributed system governed by the wave equation with memory. It will be proved that this mechanical system can be driven to rest in finite time, the absolute value of the distributed control function being bounded. In this case the memory kernel is a linear combination of exponentials.
In this paper, we investigate the two-point boundary value problems for linear wave equation defined on a circle and prove that the equation possesses the exact controllability. We also investigate the two-point boundary value problems for the wave equation defined on a strip with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions and show that the equation still possesses the exact controllability. see arXiv:0910.5782v1
In this work we study the exact boundary controllability of a generalized wave equation in a nonsmooth domain with a nontrapping obstacle. In the more general case, this work contemplates the boundary control of a transmission problem admitting several zones of transmission. The result is obtained using the technique developed by David Russell, taking advantage of the local energy decay for the problem, obtained through the Scattering Theory as used by Vodev, combined with a powerful trace Theorem due to Tataru.
This paper is devoted to prove the exact controllability of a system of N one-dimensional coupled wave equations when the control is exerted on a part of the boundary by means of one control. We consider the case where the coupling matrix A has distinct eigenvalues. We give a Kalman condition (necessary and sufficient) and give a description, non-optimal in general, of the attainable set.
We study the boundary exact controllability for the quasilinear wave equation in the higher-dimensional case. Our main tool is the geometric analysis. We derive the existence of long time solutions near an equilibrium, prove the locally exact controllability around the equilibrium under some checkable geometrical conditions. We then establish the globally exact controllability in such a way that the state of the quasilinear wave equation moves from an equilibrium in one location to an equilibrium in another location under some geometrical condition. The Dirichlet action and the Neumann action …
In this paper, we study the exact controllability and stabilization of a system of two wave equations coupled by velocities with an internal, local control acting on only one equation. We distinguish two cases. In the first one, when the waves propagate at the same speed: using a frequency domain approach combined with multiplier technique, we prove that the system is exponentially stable when the coupling region satisfies the geometric control condition GCC. Following a result of Haraux ([11]), we establish the main indirect observability inequality. This results leads, by the HUM method, to …
In this paper we introduce some new concepts for second-order hyperbolic equations: two-point boundary value problem, global exact controllability and exact controllability. For several kinds of important linear and nonlinear wave equations arising from physics and geometry, we prove the existence of smooth solutions of the two-point boundary value problems and show the global exact controllability of these wave equations. In particular, we investigate the two-point boundary value problem for one-dimensional wave equation defined on a closed curve and prove the existence of smooth solution whi…
We consider the damped wave equation on a manifold with imperfect geometric control. We show the sub-exponential energy decay estimate in \cite{Chr-NC-erratum} is optimal in the case of one hyperbolic periodic geodesic. We show if the equation is overdamped, then the energy decays exponentially. Finally we show if the equation is overdamped but geometric control fails for one hyperbolic periodic geodesic, then nevertheless the energy decays exponentially.
By mean of generalized Fourier series and Parseval's equality in weighted $L^{2}$--spaces, we derive a sharp energy estimate for the wave equation in a bounded interval with a moving endpoint. Then, we show the observability, in a sharp time, at each of the endpoints of the interval. The observability constants are explicitly given. Using the Hilbert Uniqueness Method we deduce the exact boundary controllability of the wave equation.
We study the wave equation in an interval with two linearly moving endpoints. We give the exact solution by a series formula, then we show that the energy of the solution decay at the rate $1/t$. We also establish observability results, at one or two endpoints, in a sharp time. Moreover, using the Hilbert uniqueness method, we derive exact boundary controllability results.
We study the problem of controlling the free surface for a two dimensional solid container in the context of the gravity waves and the sloshing problem. By using conformal maps and the Dirichlet-Neumann operator, the problem is formulated as a second order evolutionary equation on the free surface involving a self-adjoint operator. We present then the appropriate Sobolev spaces where having solutions for the system and study the exact controllability through an observability inequality for the adjoint problem.
In this paper we consider the problem of recovering the conformal factor in a conformal class of Riemannian metrics from the boundary measurement of one wave field. More precisely, using boundary control operators, we derive an explicit equation satisfied by the contrast between two conformal factors (or wave speeds). This equation is Fredholm and generically invertible provided that the domain of interest is properly illuminated at an initial time. We also show locally Lipschitz stability estimates.
