We consider both the internal and boundary controllability problems for wave equations under non-negativity constraints on the controls. First, we prove the steady state controllability property with nonnegative controls for a general class of wave equations with time-independent coefficients. According to it, the system can be driven from a steady state generated by a strictly positive control to another, by means of nonnegative controls, when the time of control is long enough. Secondly, under the added assumption of conservation and coercivity of the energy, controllability is proved between states lying on two distinct trajectories. Our methods are described and developed in an abstract setting, to be applicable to a wide variety of control systems.
In many practical applications of control theory some constraints on the state and/or on the control need to be imposed. In this paper, we prove controllability results for semilinear parabolic equations under positivity constraints on the control, when the time horizon is long enough. As we shall see, in fact, the minimal controllability time turns out to be strictly positive. More precisely, we prove a global steady state constrained controllability result for a semilinear parabolic equation with $C^1$ nonlinearity, without sign or globally Lipschitz assumptions on the nonlinear term. Then, …
This paper focuses on boundary approximate controllability under positivity constraints of a wide range of infinite-dimensional control systems. We develop frequency domain controllability criteria. Firstly, we derive a controllability result under positivity constraints on the control for such systems. Then, and more importantly, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for controllability under positivity constraints on the control and the state. The obtained results are applied to the controllability of transportation and heat conduction networks. In particular, provided that the und…
In this article, we consider the infinite dimensional linear control system describing the Population Models Structured by Age, Size, and Spatial Position. The control is localized in the space variable as well as with respect to the age and size. For each control support, we give an estimate of the time needed to control the system to zero. We prove the null controllability of the model, using a technique avoids the explicit use of parabolic Carleman estimates. Indeed, this method combines final-state observability estimates with the use of characteristics and with $L^{\infty}$ estimates of t…
We study the controllability to trajectories, under positivity constraints on the control or the state, of a one-dimensional heat equation involving the fractional Laplace operator $ (-\partial_x^2)^s$ (with $0<s<1$) on the interval $(-1,1)$. Our control function is localized in an open set $\mathcal O$ in the exterior of $(-1,1)$, that is, $\mathcal O\subset (\mathbb{R} \setminus (-1,1))$. We show that there exists a minimal (strictly positive) time $T_{\rm min}$ such that the fractional heat dynamics can be controlled from any initial datum in $L^2(-1,1)$ to a positive trajectory through the…
We study the controllability of a coupled system of linear parabolic equations, with non-negativity constraint on the state. We establish two results of controllability to trajectories in large time: one for diagonal diffusion matrices with an "approximate" nonnegativity constraint, and a another stronger one, with "exact" nonnegativity constraint, when all the diffusion coefficients are equal and the eigenvalues of the coupling matrix have nonnegative real part. The proofs are based on a "staircase" method. Finally, we show that state-constrained controllability admits a positive minimal time…
We give a characterization of the controllability for discrete-time linear systems with convex output constraints. It extends all previously known characterizations in the literature, as well as our previous results on controllability of discrete-time linear systems with conic output constraints.
The goal of this article is to discuss controllability properties for an abstract linear system of the form $y' = Ay + Bu$ under some additional linear projection constraints on the control $u$ or / and on the controlled trajectory $y$. In particular, we discuss the possibility of imposing the linear projections of the controlled trajectory and of the control, in the context of approximate controllability, exact controllability and null-controllability. As it turns out, in all these settings, for being able to impose linear projection constraints on the trajectory and on the control, we will s…
In this paper, motivated by the study of optimal control problems for infinite dimensional systems with endpoint state constraints, we introduce the notion of finite codimensional (exact/approximate) controllability. Some equivalent criteria on the finite codimensional controllability are presented. In particular, the finite codimensional exact controllability is reduced to deriving a Gårding type inequality for the adjoint system, which is new for many evolution equations. This inequality can be verified for some concrete problems (and hence applied to the corresponding optimal control proble…
Controllability maximization problem under sparsity constraints is a node selection problem that selects inputs that are effective for control in order to minimize the energy to control for desired state. In this paper we discuss the equivalence between the sparsity constrained controllability metrics maximization problems and their convex relaxation. The proof is based on the matrix-valued Pontryagin maximum principle applied to the controllability Lyapunov differential equation.
Motivated by infinite-dimensional optimal control problems with endpoint state constraints, in this Note, we introduce the notion of finite codimensional exact controllability for evolution equations. It is shown that this new controllability is equivalent to the finite codimensionality condition in the literatures to guarantee Pontryagin's maximum principle. As examples, LQ problems with fixed endpoint state constraints for a wave and a heat equation are analyzed, respectively.
In optimal control theory, infimum gap means that there is a gap between the infimum values of a given minimum problem and an extended problem, obtained by enlarging the set of original solutions and controls. The gap phenomenon is somewhat "dual" to the problem of the controllability of the original control system to an extended solution. In this paper we present sufficient conditions for the absence of an infimum gap and for controllability for a wide class of optimal control problems subject to endpoint and state constraints. These conditions are based on a nondegenerate version of the nons…
In this work, we formulate two controllability maximization problems for large-scale networked dynamical systems such as brain networks: The first problem is a sparsity constraint optimization problem with a box constraint. The second problem is a modified problem of the first problem, in which the state transition matrix is Metzler. In other words, the second problem is a realization problem for a positive system. We develop a projected gradient method for solving the problems, and prove global convergence to a stationary point with locally linear convergence rate. The projections onto the co…
In this work, we consider the controllability of a discrete-time linear dynamical system with sparse control inputs. Sparsity constraints on the input arises naturally in networked systems, where activating each input variable adds to the cost of control. We derive algebraic necessary and sufficient conditions for ensuring controllability of a system with an arbitrary transfer matrix. The derived conditions can be verified in polynomial time complexity, unlike the more traditional Kalman-type rank tests. Further, we characterize the minimum number of input vectors required to satisfy the deriv…
We consider a mechanical system which is controlled by means of moving constraints. Namely, we assume that some of the coordinates can be directly assigned as functions of time by means of frictionless constraints. This leads to a system of ODE's whose right hand side depends quadratically on the time derivative of the control. In this paper we introduce a simplified dynamics, described by a differential inclusion. We prove that every trajectory of the differential inclusion can be uniformly approximated by a trajectory of the original system, on a sufficiently large time interval, starting at…
This paper studies controllability of a discrete-time linear dynamical system using nonnegative and sparse inputs. These constraints on the control input arise naturally in many real-life systems where the external influence on the system is unidirectional, and activating each input node adds to the cost of control. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for controllability of the system, without imposing any constraints on the system matrices. Unlike the well-known Kalman rank based controllability criteria, the conditions presented in this paper can be verified in polynomial time,…
In this paper, we present the controllability properties of Keplerian motion controlled by low-thrust control systems. The low-thrust control system, compared with high or even impulsive control system, provide a fuel-efficient means to control the Keplerian motion of a satellite in restricted two-body problem. We obtain that, for any positive value of maximum thrust, the motion is controllable for orbital transfer problems. For two other typical problems: de-orbit problem and orbital insertion problem, which have state constraints, the motion is controllable if and only if the maximum thrust …

Actuator placement is an active field of research which has received significant attention for its applications in complex dynamical networks. In this paper, we study the problem of finding a set of actuator placements minimizing the metric that measures the average energy consumed for state transfer by the controller, while satisfying a structural controllability requirement and a cardinality constraint on the number of actuators allowed. As no computationally efficient methods are known to solve such combinatorial set function optimization problems, two greedy algorithms, forward and reverse…
We are concerned with the design of Model Predictive Control (MPC) schemes such that asymptotic stability of the resulting closed loop is guaranteed even if the linearization at the desired set point fails to be stabilizable. Therefore, we propose to construct the stage cost based on the homogeneous approximation and rigorously show that applying MPC yields an asymp-totically stable closed-loop behavior if the homogeneous approximation is asymptotically null controllable. To this end, we verify cost controllability-a condition relating the current state, the stage cost, and the growth of the v…
Our ability to control network dynamical systems is often hindered by constraints on the number and nature of the available control actions, which make controlling the whole network unfeasible. In this manuscript, we focus on the case where unilateral inputs are exerted on a subset of the network nodes. Leveraging the observation that, different from the case of subsystems, unilateral node reachability and controllability are equivalent, we provide conditions for a given node subset to be unilaterally controllable. The theoretical findings are then employed to develop a computationally efficie…
We consider sampled-data Model Predictive Control (MPC) of nonlinear continuous-time control systems. We derive sufficient conditions to guarantee recursive feasibility and asymptotic stability without stabilising costs and/or constraints. Moreover, we present formulas to explicitly estimate the required length of the prediction horizon based on the concept of (local) cost controllability. For the linear-quadratic case, cost controllability can be inferred from standard assumptions. In addition, we extend results on the relationship between the horizon length and the distance of the initial st…
In this paper, the controllability and observability of linear multi-agent systems over matrix-weighted signed networks are analyzed. Firstly, the definition of equitable partition of matrix-weighted signed multi-agent system is given, and the upper bound of controllable subspace and a necessary condition of controllability are obtained by combining the restriction conditions of the coefficient matrix and matrix weight for the case of fixed and switching topologies, respectively. The influence of different selection methods of coefficient matrices on the results is discussed. Secondly, for the …
This paper provides the extension of the observability rank condition and the extension of the controllability rank condition to time-varying nonlinear systems. Previous conditions to check the state observability and controllability, only account for nonlinear systems that do not explicitly depend on time, or, for time-varying systems, they only account for the linear case. In this paper, the general analytic conditions are provided. The paper shows that both these two new conditions (the extended observability rank condition and the extended controllability rank condition) reduce to the well…
