We complete the classification of globally generated vector bundles with small $c_1$ on projective spaces by treating the case $c_1 = 5$ on $\mathbb{P}^n$, $n \geq 4$ (the case $c_1 \leq 3$ has been considered by Sierra and Ugaglia, while the cases $c_1 = 4$ on any projective space and $c_1 = 5$ on $\mathbb{P}^2$ and $\mathbb{P}^3$ have been studied in two of our previous papers). It turns out that there are very few indecomposable bundles of this kind: besides some obvious examples there are, roughly speaking, only the (first twist of the) rank 5 vector bundle which is the middle term of the monad defining the Horrocks bundle of rank 3 on $\mathbb{P}^5$, and its restriction to $\mathbb{P}^4$. We recall, in an appendix, from our preprint [arXiv:1805.11336], the main results allowing the classification of globally generated vector bundles with $c_1 = 5$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$. Since there are many such bundles, a large part of the main body of the paper is occupied with the proof of the fact that, except for the simplest ones, they do not extend to $\mathbb{P}^4$ as globally generated vector bundles.
We investigate the globally generated vector bundles on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with the first Chern class at most 2. We classify all the globally generated vector bundles of an arbitrary rank on quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate the globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds of codimension 2.
We classify globally generated vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ with small first Chern class, i.e. $c_1= (a,b)$, $a+b \leq 3$. Our main method is to investigate the associated smooth curves to globally generated vector bundles via the Hartshorne-Serre construction.
We give a complete classification of globally generated vector bundles of rank 3 on a smooth quadric threefold with $c_1\leq 2$ and extend the result to arbitrary higher rank case. We also investigate the existence of globally generated indecomposable vector bundles, and give the sufficient and necessary conditions on numeric data of vector bundles for indecomposability.
We classify rank two globally generated vector bundles on P^n, n > 2, with c_1 \leq 5. The classification is complete but for one case (n = 3, c_1 = 5, c_2 = 12)
We investigate the existence of globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 with $c_1\leq 3$ on a smooth quadric threefold and determine their Chern classes. As an automatic consequence, every rank 2 globally generated vector bundle on $Q$ with $c_1=3$ is an odd instanton up to twist.
We give the classification of globally generated vector bundles of rank $2$ on a smooth quadric surface with $c_1\le (2,2)$ in terms of the indices of the bundles, and extend the result to arbitrary higher rank case. We also investigate their indecomposability and give the sufficient and necessary condition on numeric data of vector bundles for indecomposability.
We classify globally generated vector bundles on $\mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1 \times \mathbf{P}^1$ with small first Chern class, i.e. $c_1= (a_1, a_2, a_3)$, $a_i \le 2$. Our main method is to investigate the associated smooth curves to globally generated vector bundles via the Hartshorne-Serre correspondence.
By proving an integral formula of the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$, we observe that the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$ is very similar to that of a line bundle and obtain certain new Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing theorems for vector bundles. As special cases, we deduce vanishing theorems for ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles by analytic method instead of the Leray-Borel-Le Potier spectral sequence.
We obtain a sharp bound on the degree of a globally generated vector bundle over a reduced irreducible projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. As an application, we obtain a Del Pezzo-Bertini type theorem on varieties of minimal degree for subvarieties of Grassmannians.
One classifies the globally generated vector bundles on P^3 with the first Chern class c_1=3. The case c_1=2 on P^n was done by J.C. Sierra and L. Ugaglia (see the References) and the case c_1=3, rank=2 on P^n was done by S. Huh (see the References).
In this paper, we show that the cohomology of a general stable bundle on a Hirzebruch surface is determined by the Euler characteristic provided that the first Chern class satisfies necessary intersection conditions. More generally, we compute the Betti numbers of a general stable bundle. We also show that a general stable bundle on a Hirzebruch surface has a special resolution generalizing the Gaeta resolution on the projective plane. As a consequence of these results, we classify Chern characters such that the general stable bundle is globally generated.
We describe the locus of stable bundles on a smooth genus $g$ curve that fail to be globally generated. For each rank $r$ and degree $d$ with $rg<d<r(2g-1)$, we exhibit a component of the expected dimension. We show moreover that no component has larger dimension and give an explicit description of those families of smaller dimension than expected. For large enough degrees, we show that the locus is irreducible.
One classifies the globally generated vector bundles on P^n (n \not = 3) with the first Chern class c_1 = 3. The case n = 3 is treated in arXiv:1202.5988 [math.AG]. The case c_1 = 2 was treated by J.C. Sierra and L. Ugaglia (see References), the case c_1 = 3, rank = 2 is settled by S. Huh (see References), the case rank = 2, c_1 \le 5 is studied by L. Chiodera and Ph. Ellia (see References).
We classify globally generated vector bundles on the projective n-space with first Chern class = 4. This extends previous results for first Chern class at most 3, namely for 2 of Sierra and Ugaglia [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 213 (2009), 2141-2146] and for 3 of Anghel and Manolache [arXiv:1202.6261] and, independently, of Sierra and Ugaglia [arXiv:1203.0185]. It turns out that the case first Chern class = 4 is much more involved than the previous cases, especially on the projective 3-space. Among the bundles appearing in our classification one can find the Sasakura rank 3 vector bundle on the proje…
We classify globally generated vector bundles with first Chern class $c_1$ at least 4 on the projective 3-space with the property that $E(-c_1+3)$ has a non-zero global section. This (seemingly) technical result allows one to reduce the classification of globally generated vector bundles with $c_1$ at most 7 on the projective 3-space to the classification of stable rank-2 reflexive sheaves with the same properties. The proof is based on a description of the monads of all locally Cohen-Macaulay space curves defined by cubic equations. We extend then this kind of classification to higher dimensi…
We consider the problem of determining all pairs (c_1, c_2) of Chern classes of rank 2 bundles that are cokernel of a skew-symmetric matrix of linear forms in 3 variables, having constant rank 2c_1 and size 2c_1+2. We completely solve the problem in the "stable" range, i.e. for pairs with c_1^2-4c_2<0, proving that the additional condition c_2\le {{c_1+1}\choose 2} is necessary and sufficient. For c_1^2-4c_2\ge 0, we prove that there exist globally generated bundles, some even defining an embedding of P^2 in a Grassmannian, that cannot correspond to a matrix of the above type. This extends pre…
We provide a classification of globally generated vector bundles with $c_1 = 5$ on the projective 3-space. The classification is complete (except for one case) but not as detailed as the corresponding classification in the case $c_1 = 4$ from our paper [Memoirs A.M.S., Vol. 253, No. 1209 (2018), also arXiv:1305.3464]. We determine, at least, the pairs of integers $(a , b)$ for which there exist globally generated vector bundles on the projective 3-space with Chern classes $c_1 = 5$, $c_2 = a$, $c_3 = b$ (except for the case $(12 , 0)$ and the complementary case $(13 , 5)$ which remain undecide…
We introduce a collection of convex polytopes associated to a torus-equivariant vector bundle on a smooth complete toric variety. We show that the lattice points in these polytopes correspond to generators for the space of global sections and we relate edges to jets. Using the polytopes, we also exhibit toric vector bundles that are ample but not globally generated, and toric vector bundles that are ample and globally generated but not very ample.
Smooth complex surfaces polarized with an ample and globally generated line bundle of degree three and four, such that the adjoint bundle is not globally generated, are considered. Scrolls of a vector bundle over a smooth curve are shown to be the only examples in degree three. Two classes of examples in degree four are presented, one of which is shown to characterize regular such pairs. A Reider-type theorem is obtained in which the assumption on the degree of the polarization is removed.
We classify nef vector bundles on a projective space with first Chern class three over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero; we see, in particular, that these nef vector bundles are globally generated if the second Chern class is less than eight, and that there exist nef but non-globally generated vector bundles with second Chern class eight and nine on a projective plane.
In this note, we prove that the syzygy bundle $M_L$ is cohomologically stable with respect to $L$ for any ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on an Enriques (resp. bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\neq 2$ (resp. $\neq 2,3$). In particular our result on complex Enriques surfaces improves a result of Torres-López and Zamora by removing a condition on Clifford index. Together with the results of Camere and Caucci--Lahoz, it implies that $M_L$ is stable with respect to $L$ for an ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on any smooth minimal co…
We show that if $X$ is an abelian variety of dimension $g \geq 1$ and ${\mathcal E}$ is an M-regular coherent sheaf on $X$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of ${\mathcal E}$ with respect to an ample and globally generated line bundle ${\mathcal O}(1)$ on $X$ is at most $g$, and that equality is obtained when ${\mathcal E}^{\vee}(1)$ is continuously globally generated. As an application, we give a numerical characterization of ample semihomogeneous vector bundles for which this bound is attained.
In this paper, we show that every invertible subsheaf of the cotangent bundle of a smooth globally $F$-regular threefold of characteristic $p>3$ has Iitaka dimension less than or equal to one.
In this note, we generalize slightly Popa--Schnell's theorem regarding to direct images of pluricanonical bundles to the case when the ample line bundle is not globally generated. We also treat the case of positive characteristic.
Let $(X, H)$ be a polarized smooth projective algebraic surface and $E$ is globally generated, stable vector bundle on $X$. Then the Syzygy bundle $M_E$ associated to it is defined as the kernel bundle corresponding to the evaluation map. In this article we will study the stability property of $M_E$ with respect to $H$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface. In this note we show that any rank 3 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundle over $X$ splits when dim $X \geq 7$. We also find a splitting criterion for rank 4 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay vector bundles on $X$ when dim $X \geq 9$.
We observe that the proof of the Bogomolov stable restriction theorem can be adapted to give an ampleness criterion for globally generated rank 2 vector bundles on certain surfaces. This applies to the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, to congruences of lines in P^3, and possibly to the construction of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle (help welcome!).
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g \geq 2 defined over a field of characteristic two. We give examples of stable orthogonal bundles with unstable underlying vector bundles and use them to give counterexamples to Behrend's conjecture on the canonical reduction of principal G-bundles for G= SO(n) with n \geq 7.
ACM rank 1 bundles on del Pezzo surfaces are classified in terms of the rational normal curves that they contain. A complete list of ACM line bundles is provided. Moreover, for any del Pezzo surface $X$ of degree less or equal than six and for any $n\geq 2$ we construct a family of dimension $\geq n-1$ of non-isomorphic simple ACM bundles of rank $n$ on $X$.
We prove moduli spaces of semistable parabolic bundles and generalized parabolic sheaves with fixed determinant on a smooth projective curve are globally $F$-regular type.
For any simple Lie algebra, a positive integer, and tuple of compatible weights, the conformal blocks bundle is a globally generated vector bundle on the moduli space of pointed rational curves. We classify all $S_n$-invariant vector bundles of conformal blocks for $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ which have rank one. We show that the cone generated by their base point free first Chern classes is polyhedral, generated by level one divisors.
Let $n\geq 4$, $2 \leq r \leq n-2$ and $e \geq 1$. We show that the intersection of the locus of degree $e$ morphisms from $\mathbb{P}^1$ to $G(r,n)$ with the restricted universal sub-bundles having a given splitting type and the locus of degree $e$ morphisms with the restricted universal quotient-bundle having a given splitting type is non-empty and generically transverse. As a consequence, we get that the locus of degree $e$ morphisms from $\mathbb{P}^1$ to $G(r,n)$ with the restricted tangent bundle having a given splitting type need not always be irreducible.
Let p: Y--> X be a surjection between schemes projective over the algebraic closure of a finite field. Let L be a line bundle on X such that p^*(L) is globally generated. I give a natural necessary and sufficient condition under which some positive tensor power of L is globally generated. I apply this to give a sufficient condition for semi-ampleness of nef line bundles on the moduli space of stable pointed curves, in positive characteristic.
Let $X$ be a submanifold of dimension $d\geq 2$ of the complex projective space $\mathbb P^n$. We prove results of the following type. i) If $X$ is irregular and $n=2d$ then the normal bundle $N_{X|\mathbb P^n}$ is indecomposable. ii) If $X$ is irregular, $d\geq 3$ and $n=2d+1$ then $N_{X|\mathbb P^n}$ is not the direct sum of two vector bundles of rank $\geq 2$. iii) If $d\geq 3$, $n=2d-1$ and $N_{X|\mathbb P^n}$ is decomposable then the natural restriction map $\Pic(\mathbb P^n)\to\Pic(X)$ is an isomorphism (and in particular, if $X=\mathbb P^{d-1}\times\mathbb P^1$ embedded Segre in $\mathb…
The Sasakura bundle is a relatively recent appearance in the world of remarkable vector bundles on projective spaces. In fact, it is connected with some surfaces in $\mathbb P^4$ which missed in early classification papers. The aim of this note is to present various, scattered in the literature, aspects concerning the geometry of this bundle. The last part will be devoted to the place of this bundle in the classification of globally generated locally free sheaves with $c_1 \leq 4$ on $\mathbb P^n$ in a joint paper with I. Coanda and N. Manolache.
We prove that on $X_n$, the plane blown--up at $n$ general points, there are Ulrich line bundles with respect to a line bundle corresponding to curves of degree $m$ passing simply through the $n$ blown--up points, with $m\leq 2\sqrt{n}$ and such that the line bundle in question is very ample on $X_n$. We prove that the number of these Ulrich line bundles tends to infinity with $n$. We also prove the existence of slope--stable rank--$r$ Ulrich vector bundles on $X_n$, for $n\geq 2$ and any $r \geq 1$ and we compute the dimensions of their moduli spaces. These computations imply that $X_n$ is {U…
We study ample stable vector bundles on minimal rational surfaces. We give a complete classification of those moduli spaces for which the general stable bundle is both ample and globally generated. We also prove that if $V$ is any stable bundle, then a large enough direct sum $V^{\oplus n}$ has ample deformations unless there is an obvious numerical reason why it cannot. Previous work in this area has mostly focused on rank two bundles and relied primarily on classical constructions such as the Serre construction. In contrast, we use recent advances in moduli of vector bundles to obtain strong…
Let $X$ be a submanifold of dimension $n$ of the complex projective space $\mathbb P^N$ ($n<N$), and let $E$ be a vector bundle of rank two on $X$ . If $n\geq\frac{N+3}{2}\geq 4$ we prove a geometric criterion for the existence of an extension of $E$ to a vector bundle on the first order infinitesimal neighborhood of $X$ in $\mathbb P^N$ in terms of the splitting of the normal bundle sequence of $Y\subset X\subset\mathbb P^N$, where $Y$ is the zero locus of a general section of a high twist of $E$. In the last section we show that the universal quotient vector bundle on the Grassmann variety $…
A generic strictly semistable bundle of degree zero over a curve X has a reducible theta divisor, given by the sum of the theta divisors of the stable summands of the associated graded bundle. The converse is not true: Beauville and Raynaud have each constructed stable bundles with reducible theta divisors. For X of genus at least 5, we construct stable vector bundles over X of rank $r$ for all $r \geq 5$, with reducible and nonreduced theta divisors. We also adapt the construction to symplectic bundles. In the appendix, Raynaud's original example of a stable rank 2 vector bundle with reducibl…
We define several notions of interpolation for vector bundles on curves and discuss their relation to slope stability. The heart of the paper demonstrates how to use degeneration arguments to prove interpolation. We use these ideas to show that a general connected space curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ satisfies interpolation for $d \geq g+3$ unless $d = 5$ and $g = 2$. As a second application, we show that a general elliptic curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ satisfies weak interpolation when $d \geq 7$, $d \geq n+1$, and the remainder of $2d$ modulo $n-1$ lies between $3$ and $n-2$ inclu…
Consider an ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on a smooth projective variety $X$ of dimension $N\geq 2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $D$ be a smooth divisor in the complete linear system of $L$. We construct reflexive sheaves on $X$ by an elementary transformation of a trivial bundle on $X$ along certain globally generated torsion-free sheaves on $D$. The dual reflexive sheaves are called the Lazarsfeld-Mukai reflexive sheaves. We prove the $μ_L$-(semi)stability of such reflexive sheaves under certain conditions.
Let $M(n,ξ)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n\geq 3$ and fixed determinant $ξ$ over a smooth projective algebraic curve $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ of genus $g\geq 4.$ We use the gonality of the curve and $r$-Hecke morphisms to describe a smooth open set and to compute the dimension of a component of the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{M(n,ξ)}$, of the scheme of morphisms $Mor(\mathbb{G},M(n,ξ))$ and of the moduli space $ M_{X \times \mathbb{G}}$ of stable bundles over $X\times \mathbb{G},$ where $\mathbb{G}$ is the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(n-r,\mathbb{C}^n)$. In particular, we prove th…
In this paper we study ACM vector bundles $\E$ of rank $k \geq 3$ on hypersurfaces $X_r \subset\Pj^4$ of degree $r \geq 1$. We consider here mainly the case of degree $r = 4$, which is the first unknown case in literature. Under some natural conditions for the bundle $\E$ we derive a list of possible Chern classes $(c_1,c_2,c_3)$ which may arise in the cases of rank $k=3$ and $k=4$, when $r=4$. For some cases among these we give the corresponding examples, the existence of all the other cases remaining under question.
