The Stefan-Boltzmann law yields a fundamental constraint on the geometry of inner accretion disks in black-hole X-ray binaries. It follows from considering the irradiating flux and the effective temperature of the inner parts of the disk, which implies that a strong quasi-thermal component with the average energy higher than that of a blackbody at the effective temperature has to be present whenever relativistic Fe K fluorescence and reflection features are observed. The apparent absence of such quasi-thermal component with the color temperature of $\sim$1 keV in high-luminosity hard states is not compatible with a strongly irradiated disk extending close to the innermost stable circular orbit. Instead, the disk should be either truncated at a relatively large radius or irradiated by a corona at a large height, which would reduce the effective temperature and bring it to an agreement with the data. We also study constraints on disk/corona models following from comparing the disk densities fitted in literature using variable-density reflection codes with those calculated by us from the ionization parameter, the luminosity and the disk inner radius. We find that the fitted densities are much higher/lower in the hard/soft state of binaries, implying significant problems with the used assumptions and methods.
The "radiation inner edge" of an accretion disk is defined as the inner boundary of the region from which most of the luminosity emerges. Similarly, the "reflection edge" is the smallest radius capable of producing a significant X-ray reflection of the fluorescent iron line. For black hole accretion disks with very sub-Eddington luminosities these and all other "inner edges" locate at ISCO. Thus, in this case, one may rightly consider ISCO as the unique inner edge of the black hole accretion disk. However, even for moderate luminosities, there is no such unique inner edge as differently define…
The temporal behaviour of X-rays from some AGN and microquasars is thought to arise from the rapid collapse of the hot, inner parts of their accretion discs. The collapse can occur over the radial infall timescale of the inner accretion disc. However, estimates of this timescale are hindered by a lack of knowledge of the operative viscosity in the collisionless plasma comprising the inner disc. We use published simulation results for cosmic ray diffusion through turbulent magnetic fields to arrive at a viscosity prescription appropriate to hot accretion discs. We construct simplified disc mode…
The Poynting-Robertson Cosmic Battery proposes that the innermost part of the accretion disk around a black hole is threaded by a large scale dipolar magnetic field generated in situ, and that the return part of the field diffuses outward through the accretion disk. This is different from the scenario that the field originates at large distances and is carried inward by the accretion flow. In view of the importance of large scale magnetic fields in regulating the processes of accretion and outflows, we study the stability of the inner edge of a magnetized disk in general relativity when the di…
Previous works show strong winds exist in hot accretion flows around black holes. Those works focus only on the region close to the black hole thus it is unknown whether or where the wind production stops at large radii. In this paper, we investigate this problem by hydrodynamical simulations. We take into account gravities of both the black hole and the nuclear star clusters. For the latter, we assume that the velocity dispersion of stars is a constant and its gravitational potential $\propto σ^2 \ln (r)$, where $σ$ is the velocity dispersion of stars and $r$ is the distance from the center o…
One of the primary means of determining the spin of an astrophysical black hole is by actually measuring the inner radius of a surrounding accretion disk and using that to infer the spin. By comparing a number of different estimates of the inner radius from simulations of tilted accretion disks with differing black-hole spins, we show that such a procedure can give quite wrong answers. Over the range 0 <= a/M <= 0.9, we find that, for moderately thick disks (H/r ~ 0.2) with modest tilt (15 degrees), the inner radius is nearly independent of spin. This result is likely dependent on tilt, such t…
Sgr A* represents a unique laboratory for the detailed study of accretion processes around a low-luminosity supermassive black hole (SMBH). Recent X-ray observations have allowed for spatially resolved modeling of the emission from the accretion flow around the SMBH, placing tight constraints on the flux and spectral shape of the accretion from the inner region with $r<10^3~r_g$, where $r_g$ is the gravitational radius of the black hole. We present here the first modeling of the multi-band spectral energy distribution (SED) of this inner region to better constrain the physical condition of the…

Black hole binary transients undergo dramatic evolution in their X-ray timing and spectral behaviour during outbursts. In recent years a paradigm has arisen in which "soft" X-ray states are associated with an inner disc radius at, or very close to, the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) around the black hole, while in "hard" X-ray states the inner edge of the disc is further from the black hole. Models of advective flows suggest that as the X-ray luminosity drops in hard states, the inner disc progressively recedes, from a few to hundreds gravitational radii. Recent observations which show…
We present results from three recent XMM-Newton observations of GX 339$-$4 in the low/hard state, taken during the decay of a bright (peak $\sim 0.05$ L$_{\rm Edd}$) failed outburst. Uniquely, these are the first XMM-Newton EPIC-pn observations of this source using an imaging mode, which significantly enhances the quality of the data at hand. In particular, thanks to the larger available bandpass, this allows an unprecedented constraint of the thermal accretion disc component, and the level of photoelectric absorption. We simultaneously measured the inner radius of the accretion disc via the b…
Most black hole binaries show large changes in X-ray luminosity caused primarily by variations in mass accretion rate. An important question for understanding black hole accretion and jet production is whether the inner edge of the accretion disk recedes at low accretion rate. Measurements of the location of the inner edge (Rin) can be made using iron emission lines that arise due to fluorescence of iron in the disk, and these indicate that Rin is very close to the black hole at high and moderate luminosities (near 1% of the Eddington luminosity, Ledd). Here, we report on X-ray observations of…
We have investigated the critical conditions required for a steady propeller effect for magnetized neutron stars with optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disks. We have shown through simple analytical calculations that a steady-state propeller mechanism cannot be sustained at an inner disk radius where the viscous and magnetic stresses are balanced. The radius calculated by equating these stresses is usually found to be close to the conventional Alfven radius for spherical accretion, r_A. Our results show that: (1) a steady propeller phase can be established with a maximum inner disk…
The simultaneous and coupled evolution of horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) and normal branch oscillation (NBO) in Z-type sources suggests that the production of HBO is connected to NBO and is caused by changes in the physical/radiative properties of the inner accretion disk, although there is a lack of substantial spectral evidence to support this. In this {\it Letter}, we present the results of an analysis of a RXTE observation of a Z source GX~5-1, where the 6 Hz NBO is simultaneously detected along with a HBO at 51 Hz. The variations in the intensity and the associated power density spec…
The nature of accretion onto stellar mass black holes in the low/hard state remains unresolved, with some evidence suggesting that the inner accretion disc is truncated and replaced by a hot flow. However, the detection of relativistic broadened Fe emission lines, even at relatively low luminosities, seems to require an accretion disc extending fully to its innermost stable circular orbit. Modelling such features is however highly susceptible to degeneracies, which could easily bias any interpretation. We present the first systematic study of the Fe line region to track how the inner accretion…
We present various instability mechanisms in the accreting black hole systems which might indicate at the connection between the accretion disk and jet. The jets observed in microquasars can have a persistent or blobby morphology. Correlated with the accretion luminosity, this might provide a link to the cyclic outbursts of the disk. Such duty-cycle type of behavior on short timescales results from the thermal instability caused by the radiation pressure domination. The same type of instability may explain the cyclic radioactivity of the supermassive black hole systems. The somewhat longer tim…
We present numerical calculations of spectra and structure of accretion disks models appropriate for near-Eddington luminosity black hole X-ray binaries (BHB). Our work incorporates non-zero torque at the ISCO as well as several dissipation profiles based on first-principles three-dimensional disk interior simulations. We found that significant dissipation near the photosphere can produce steep power law-like spectra for models with moderate viewing angles spanning a range of black hole spins while including inner torque push the spectral peak to higher energies. Consistent with previous studi…
Strong evidence is emerging that winds can be driven from the central regions of accretion disks in both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Galactic black hole binaries (GBHBs). Direct evidence for highly-ionized, Compton-thin inner-disk winds comes from observations of blueshifted (v~0.05-0.1c) iron-K X-ray absorption lines. However, it has been suggested that the inner regions of black hole accretion disks can also drive Compton-thick winds --- such winds would enshroud the inner disk, preventing us from seeing direct signatures of the accretion disk (i.e. the photospheric thermal emission, or…
The inner 20 gravitational radii around the black hole at the centre of luminous Active Galactic Nuclei and stellar mass Black Hole Binaries are now being routinely mapped by X-ray spectral-timing techniques. Spectral blurring and reverberation of the reflection spectrum are key tools in this work. In the most extreme AGN cases with high black hole spin, when the source appears in a low state, observations probe the region within 1 gravitational radius of the event horizon. The location, size and operation of the corona, which generates the power-law X-ray continuum, are also being revealed.
Numerical simulations of black hole hot accretion flows have shown the existence of strong wind. Those works focus only on the region close to black hole thus it is unknown whether or where the wind production stops at large radii. To address this question, Bu et al. (2016) have performed hydrodynamic (HD) simulations by taking into account the gravitational potential of both the black hole and the nuclear star clusters. The latter is assumed to be $\propto σ^2 \ln(r)$, with $σ$ being the velocity dispersion of stars and $r$ be the distance from the center of the galaxy. It was found that when…
We present X-ray timing and spectral analyses of simultaneous 150 ks Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Suzaku X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 4151. We disentangle the continuum emission, absorption, and reflection properties of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) by applying inner accretion disk reflection and absorption-dominated models. With a time-averaged spectral analysis, we find strong evidence for relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. We find that relativistic emission arises from a highly ionized inner accretion disk with a steep emissi…
Bondi accretion assumes that there is a sink of mass at the center -- which in case of a black hole (BH) corresponds to the advection of matter across the event horizon. Other stars, such as a neutron star (NS), have surfaces and hence the infalling matter has to slow down at the surface. We study the initial value problem in which the matter distribution is uniform and at rest at $t=0$. We consider different inner boundary conditions for BHs and NSs: outflow boundary condition (mimicking mass sink at the center) valid for BHs; and {\em reflective} and steady-shock (allowing gas to cross the i…
We present a high density disc reflection spectral analysis of a sample of 17 Seyfert 1 galaxies to study the inner disc densities at different black hole mass scales and accretion rates. All the available XMM-Newton observations in the archive are used. OM observations in the optical/UV band are used to estimate their accretion rates. We find that 65% of sources in our sample show a disc density significantly higher than 1e15 cm^{-3}, which was assumed in previous reflection-based spectral analyses. The best-fit disc densities show an anti-correlation with black hole mass and mass accretion r…
We analyze the relation between the emission radii of twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) and the co-rotation radii of the 12 neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs) which are simultaneously detected with the twin kHz QPOs and NS spins. We find that the average co-rotation radius of these sources is r_co about 32 km, and all the emission positions of twin kHz QPOs lie inside the corotation radii, indicating that the twin kHz QPOs are formed in the spin-up process. It is noticed that the upper frequency of twin kHz QPOs is higher than NS spin frequency by > 10%, which …
We present a broad-band X-ray study of the effect of superorbital periods on X-ray spectra and pulse profiles in the neutron star X-ray binaries LMC X-4 and SMC X-1. These two sources display periodic or quasi-periodic variations in luminosity on the order of tens of days which are known to be superorbital, and are attributed to warped, precessing accretion disks. Using joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations that span a complete superorbital cycle, we examine the broad-band spectra of these sources and find the shape to be well described by an absorbed power law with a soft blackbody compone…
We investigate the dynamics of radiation in an astrophysical accretion disk around a Kerr black hole. The source of the radiation is the accretion disk itself, and not a central object as in previous studies of the Poynting-Robertson effect. We generate numerical sky maps from photon trajectories that originate on the surface of the disk as seen from the inner edge of the disk at the position of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We investigate several accretion disk morphologies with a Shakura-Sunyaev surface temperature distribution. Finally, we calculate the electromotive source of…
We show for five DN systems, SS Cyg, VW Hyi, RU Peg, WW Cet and T Leo that the UV and X-ray power spectra of their time variable light curves are similar in quiescence. All of them show a break in their power spectra, which in the framework of the model of propagating fluctuations indicates inner disk truncation. We derive the inner disk radii for these systems in a range (10-3)$\times10^{9}$ cm. We analyze the RXTE data of SS Cyg in outburst and compare it with the power spectra, obtained during the period of quiescence. We show that during the outburst the disk moves towards the white dwarf …
It is generally thought that the light coming from the inner plunging region of black hole accretion discs contributes negligibly to the disc's overall spectrum, i.e. the plunging fluid is swallowed by the black hole before it has time to radiate. In the standard disc model used to fit X-ray observations of accretion discs, the plunging region is assumed to be perfectly dark. However, numerical simulations that include the full physics of the magnetized flow predict that a small fraction of the disc's total luminosity emanates from the plunging region. We investigate the observational conseque…
We present numerical spectral and vertical structure calculations appropriate for near-Eddington-luminosity, radiation-pressure-dominated accretion disks around stellar-mass black holes. We cover a wide range of black hole spins and incorporate dissipation profiles based on first-principles three-dimensional MHD disk interior simulations. We also include nonzero stresses at the innermost stable circular orbit, which results in the disk effective temperature increasing rapidly toward the black hole and gives rise to rather extreme conditions with high temperatures and low surface densities. We …
We study the effects of accretion environment (gas density, temperature and angular momentum) at large radii ($\sim 10$pc) on luminosity of hot accretion flows. The radiative feedback effects from the accretion flow on the accretion environment are also self-consistently taken into account. We find that the slowly rotating flows at large radii can significantly deviate from Bondi accretion when radiation heating and cooling are considered. We further find that when the temperature of environment gas is low (e.g. $T=2\times 10^7$K), the luminosity of hot accretion flows is high. When the temper…
We study slowly rotating accretion flow at parsec and sub-parsec scale irradiated by a low luminosity active galactic nuclei. We take into account the Compton heating, photoionization heating by the central X-rays. The bremsstrahlung cooling, recombination and line cooling are also included. We find that due to the Compton heating, wind can be thermally driven. The power of wind is in the range $(10^{-6}-10^{-3}) L_{\rm Edd}$, with $L_{\rm Edd}$ being the Eddington luminosity. The mass flux of wind is in the range $(0.01-1) \dot M_{\rm Edd}$ ($\dot M_{\rm Edd}= L_{\rm Edd}/0.1c^2$ is the Eddin…
We present Athena++ grid-based, hydrodynamic simulations of accretion onto Sagittarius A* via the stellar winds of the $\sim 30$ Wolf-Rayet stars within the central parsec of the galactic center. These simulations span $\sim$ 4 orders of magnitude in radius, reaching all the way down to 300 gravitational radii of the black hole, $\sim 32$ times further in than in previous work. We reproduce reasonably well the diffuse thermal X-ray emission observed by Chandra in the central parsec. The resulting accretion flow at small radii is a superposition of two components: 1) a moderately unbound, sub-K…
Simulations of hot, pressure supported, tilted black hole accretion flows, in which the angular momentum of the flow is misaligned with the black hole spin axis, can exhibit two non-axisymmetric shock structures in the inner regions of the flow. We analyze the strength and significance of these shock structures in simulations with tilt angles of 10 and 15 degrees. By integrating fluid trajectories in the simulations through the shocks, and tracking the variations of fluid quantities along these trajectories, we show that these shocks are strong, with substantial compression ratios, in contrast…
The present study examines self-similarity evolution of advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in the presence of a toroidal magnetic field. In this research, it was assumed that the angular momentum transport is due to viscous turbulence and $α$-prescription was used for kinematics coefficient of viscosity. In order to solve the integrated equations which govern the dynamical behavior of the accretion flow, self-similar solution was used. The solutions show that the behavior of physical quantities in a dynamical ADAF are different from steady accretion flow and a disk with polytropic appro…
We present a study of far and near-ultraviolet emission from the accretion disk in a powerful Seyfert 1 galaxy IC4329A using observations performed with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. These data provide the highest spatial resolution and deepest images of IC4329A in the far and near UV bands acquired to date. The excellent spatial resolution of the UVIT data has allowed us to accurately separate the extended emission from the host galaxy and the AGN emission in the far and near UV bands. We derive the intrinsic AGN flux after correcting for the Galactic and internal…
Black hole X-ray binaries are ideal environments to test the accretion phenomena in the presence of strong gravitational potentials. KERRBB held an important place in the X-ray spectral continuum method for measuring the black hole spin modeling the emission from the innermost regions of the accretion disk. In this work, we present the results of X-ray spectral analysis using publicly available RXTE data of GRO J1655-40 obtained during the 2005 outburst with the two relativistic accretion disk models, KERRBB and KYNBB. Our analysis showed that both models provide identical results with black h…
Continuing our study of the role and evolution of accretion disc winds in the microquasar GRS 1915+105, we present high-resolution spectral variability analysis of the beta and gamma states with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. By tracking changes in the absorption lines from the accretion disc wind, we find new evidence that radiation links the inner and outer accretion discs on a range of time-scales. As the central X-ray flux rises during the high-luminosity gamma state, we observe the progressive over-ionization of the wind. In the beta state, we argue that change…
We study a truncated accretion disk using a well-resolved, semi-global magnetohydrodynamic simulation that is evolved for many dynamical times (6096 inner disk orbits). The spectral properties of hard state black hole binary systems and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei are regularly attributed to truncated accretion disks, but a detailed understanding of the flow dynamics is lacking. In these systems the truncation is expected to arise through thermal instability driven by sharp changes in the radiative efficiency. We emulate this behavior using a simple bistable cooling function with eff…
X-ray reflection features observed from the innermost regions of accretion disks in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) allow important tests of accretion theory. In recent years it has been possible to use the Fe K line and reflection continuum to parametrize the ionization state of the irradiated inner accretion disk. Here, we collect 10 measurements of xi, the disk ionization parameter, from 8 AGNs with strong evidence for reflection from the inner accretion disk and good black hole mass estimates. We find strong statistical evidence (98.56% confidence) for a nearly linear correlation between xi …
A number of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries have recently been discovered to show broad, asymmetric Fe K emission lines in their X-ray spectra. These lines are generally thought to be the most prominent part of a reflection spectrum, originating in the inner part of the accretion disk where strong relativistic effects can broaden emission lines. We present a comprehensive, systematic analysis of Suzaku and XMM-Newton spectra of 10 neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, all of which display broad Fe K emission lines. Of the 10 sources, 4 are Z sources, 4 are atolls and 2 are accreting milli…
We investigate aperiodic X-ray flux variability in accreting highly magnetized neutron stars - X-ray pulsars (XRPs). The X-ray variability is largely determined by mass accretion rate fluctuations at the NS surface, which replicate accretion rate fluctuations at the inner radius of the accretion disc. The variability at the inner radius is due to fluctuations arising all over the disc and propagating inwards under the influence of viscous diffusion. The inner radius varies with mean mass accretion rate and can be estimated from the known magnetic field strength and accretion luminosity of XRPs…
Thermal conduction between a cool accretion disk and a hot inner corona can result in either evaporation of the disk or condensation of the hot corona. At low mass accretion rates, evaporation dominates and can completely remove the inner disk. At higher mass accretion rates, condensation becomes more efficient in the very inner regions, so that part of the mass accretes via a weak (initially formed) inner disk which is separated from the outer disk by a fully evaporated region at mid radii. At still higher mass accretion rates, condensation dominates everywhere, so there is a continuous cool …
Stellar-mass black holes in the low-hard state may hold clues to jet formation and basic accretion disk physics, but the nature of the accretion flow remains uncertain. A standard thin disk can extend close to the innermost stable circular orbit, but the inner disk may evaporate when the mass accretion rate is reduced. Blackbody-like continuum emission and dynamically-broadened iron emission lines provide independent means of probing the radial extent of the inner disk. Here, we present an X-ray study of eight black holes in the low-hard state. A thermal disk continuum with a colour temperatur…
Iron emission lines at 6.4-6.97 keV, identified with fluorescent Kalpha transitions, are among the strongest discrete features in the X-ray band. These are therefore one of the most powerful probes to infer the properties of the plasma in the innermost part of the accretion disc around a compact object. In this paper we present a recent XMM observation of the X-ray burster 4U 1705-44, where we clearly detect a relativistically smeared iron line at about 6.7 keV, testifying with high statistical significance that the line profile is distorted by high velocity motion in the accretion disc. As ex…
According to the no-hair theorem, astrophysical black holes are uniquely described by the Kerr metric. In order to test this theorem with observations in either the electromagnetic or gravitational-wave spectra, several Kerr-like spacetimes have been constructed which describe potential deviations from the Kerr spacetime in parametric form. For electromagnetic tests of the no-hair theorem, such metrics allow for the proper modeling of the accretion flows around candidate black holes and the radiation emitted from them. In many of these models, the location of the inner edge of the accretion di…
We study ejection mechanisms for two kinds of steady jets: one observed from black hole binaries in the low/hard state and the other from SS433. The specific energy of the ejected gas is required to be positive for the jets to get to infinity, while that of the accreted gas is naively considered to be negative at the outermost boundary of the accretion flow. To reconcile the opposite sign of the specific energies, we propose a situation where two layers exist in the accretion flow and one layer receives energy from the other sufficiently for the specific energy to be positive. For the steady j…
The inner part of a thin accretion disk around a Kerr black hole can serve as an important tool to study the physics of the strong gravity regime. A tilt in such a disk with respect to the black hole spin axis is particularly useful for this purpose, as such a tilt can have a significant effect on the observed X-ray spectral and timing features via Lense-Thirring precession. However, the inner disk has been predicted to become aligned with the spin direction of the black hole by the well-known Bardeen-Petterson effect. Here we calculate, both analytically and numerically, the radial profile of…
We present here a simple hydrodynamic model based on a sequence of steady states of the inner sub-Keplerian accretion disc to model its spectral states. Correlations between different hydrodynamic steady states are studied with a goal to understand the origin of, e.g., the aperiodic variabilities. The plausible source of corona/outflow close to the central compact object is shown to be a consequence of steady state transition in the underlying accretion flow. We envisage that this phenomenological model can give insight on the influence of environment on the inner sub-Keplerian accretion disc.
We use global three dimensional radiation magneto-hydrodynamical simulations to study accretion disks onto a $5\times 10^8M_{\odot}$ black hole with accretion rates varying from $\sim 250L_{Edd}/c^2$ to $1500 L_{Edd}/c^2$. We form the disks with torus centered at $50-80$ gravitational radii with self-consistent turbulence initially generated by the magneto-rotational instability. We study cases with and without net vertical magnetic flux. The inner regions of all disks have radiation pressure $\sim 10^4-10^6$ times the gas pressure. Non-axisymmetric density waves that steepen into spiral shock…
For the collapsar scenario to be effective in the production of Gamma Ray Bursts, the infalling star's angular momentum $J(r)$ must be larger than the critical angular momentum needed to form an accretion disk around a blackhole (BH), namely $J_{\rm crit} = 2r_{g}c$ for a Schwarzschild BH. By means of 3D SPH simulations, here we study the collapse and accretion onto black holes of spherical rotating envelopes, whose angular momentum distribution has transitions between supercritical ($J>J_{\rm crit}$) and subcritical ($J<J_{\rm crit}$) values. Contrary to results obtained in previous 2D hydrod…
We present a new way of looking at the very long term evolution of GRBs in which the disk of material surrounding the putative black hole powering the GRB jet modulates the mass flow, and hence the efficacy of the process that extracts rotational energy from the black hole and inner accretion disk. The pre-Swift paradigm of achromatic, shallow-to-steep "breaks" in the long term GRB light curves has not been borne out by detailed Swift data amassed in the past several years. We argue that, given the initial existence of a fall-back disk near the progenitor, an unavoidable consequence will be th…
Observations and numerical simulations have shown that outflows generally exist in the accretion process. We revisit the thermal equilibrium solutions of black hole accretion flows by including the role of outflows. Our study focuses on the comparison of the cooling rate of outflows with that of advection. Our results show that, except for the inner region, outflows can dominate over advection in a wide range of the flow, which is in good agreement with previous numerical simulations. We argue that an advection-dominated inner region together with an outflow-dominated outer region should be a …
We have analyzed AstroSat observations of the galactic micro-quasar system GRS 1915+105, when the system exhibited C-type Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the frequency range of 3.4-5.4 Hz. The broad band spectra (1-50 keV) obtained from simultaneous LAXPC and SXT can be well described by a dominant relativistic truncated accretion disk along with thermal Comptonization and reflection. We find that while the QPO frequency depends on the inner radii with a large scatter, a much tighter correlation is obtained when both the inner radii and accretion rate of the disk are taken into account. …
Understanding the physics and geometry of accretion and ejection around super massive black holes (SMBHs) is important to understand the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and therefore of the large scale structures of the Universe. We aim at providing a simple, coherent, and global view of the sub-parsec accretion and ejection flow in AGN with varying Eddington ratio, $\dot{m}$, and black hole mass, $M_{BH}$. We made use of theoretical insights, results of numerical simulations, as well as UV and X-ray observations to review the inner regions of AGN by including different accretion and…
A core-collapse supernova is generated by the passage of a shockwave through the envelope of a massive star, where the shock wave is initially launched from the ``bounce'' of the neutron star formed during the collapse of the stellar core. Instead of successfully exploding the star, however, numerical investigations of core-collapse supernovae find that this shock tends to ``stall'' at small radii ($\lesssim$ 10 neutron star radii), with stellar material accreting onto the central object through the standing shock. Here, we present time-steady, adiabatic solutions for the density, pressure, an…
The accreting black-hole binary XTE J1752--223 was observed in a stable hard state for 25 d by RXTE, yielding a 3--140 keV spectrum of unprecedented statistical quality. Its published model required a single Comptonization spectrum reflecting from a disk close to the innermost stable circular orbit. We studied that model as well as a number of other single-Comptonization models (yielding similarly low inner radii), but found they violate a number of basic physical constraints, e.g., their compactness is much above the maximum allowed by pair equilibrium. We also studied the contemporaneous 0.5…
