We address the steady-state entropy production rate (EPR) of active scalar $ϕ^4$ theories, which lack time-reversal symmetry, close to a phase-separation critical point. We consider both nonconserved (Model A) and conserved (Model B) dynamics at Gaussian level, and also address the former at leading order in $ε= 4-d$. In each case, activity is irrelevant in the RG sense: the active model lies in the same (dynamic Ising) universality class as its time-reversible counterpart. Hence one might expect that activity brings no new critical behavior. Here we show instead that the EPR per spacetime correlation volume either remains finite or diverges on approach to criticality. A nontrivial critical scaling for entropy production thus ranks among universal dynamic Ising-class properties.
Mutual equilibrium in long-range interacting systems which involve nonadditive energy, is effectively described in terms of entropy with a nonadditive composition rule. As an example, long range Ising model is considered. The generality of the term having product of the system entropies is pointed out in this framework.
The spin-1/2 Ising octahedron and dodecahedron with a unique antiferromagnetic interaction display an outstanding magnetization jump at zero magnetic field, which consequently leads to a giant magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization. In the present work we report temperature dependences of two basic magnetocaloric response functions: the isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic change of temperature. It is shown that the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron generally exhibit a large negative isothermal entropy change upon increasing of the magnetic field, which serves in evi…
We study corrections to single tetrahedron based approximations for the entropy, specific heat and uniform susceptibility of the pyrochlore lattice Ising antiferromagnet, by a Numerical Linked Cluster (NLC) expansion. In a tetrahedron based NLC, the first order gives the Pauling residual entropy of ${1\over 2}\log{3\over 2}\approx 0.20273$. A 16-th order NLC calculation changes the residual entropy to 0.205507 a correction of 1.37 percent over the Pauling value. At high temperatures, the accuracy of the calculations is verified by a high temperature series expansion. We find the corrections to…
The properties of the ground state of the simplest frustrated system, the dilute Ising chain in a magnetic field, are rigorously investigated over the entire range of concentrations of charged non-magnetic impurities. Analytical methods are proposed for calculating the residual entropy of frustrated states, including states at phase boundaries, which are based on the Markov property of the system and involve solving a linear optimization problem for energy and a nonlinear optimization problem for entropy. These methods allow obvious generalizations for one-dimensional pseudospin models with an…
We employ a thermodynamic integration method (TIM) to establish the values of the residual entropy for the geometrically frustrated spin-s triangular Ising antiferromagnet, with the spin values s = 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2. The case of s = 1/2, for which the exact value is known, is used to assess the TIM performance. We also obtain an analytical formula for the lower bound in a general spin-s model and conjecture that it should reasonably approximate the true residual entropy for sufficiently large $s$. Implications of the present results in relation to reliability of the TIM as an indirect met…
We present an analytical and numerical study of the Ising model on a bilayer honeycomb lattice including interlayer frustration and coupling with an external magnetic field. First, we discuss the exact $T=0$ phase diagram, where we find finite entropy phases for different magnetisations. Then, we study the magnetic properties of the system at finite temperature using complementary analytical techniques (Bethe lattice), and two types of Monte-Carlo algorithms (Metropolis and Wang-Landau). We characterize the phase transitions and discuss the phase diagrams. The system presents a rich phenomenol…
The $n$-index Rényi mutual information and transfer entropy for the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model with arbitrary single-spin dynamics in the thermodynamic limit are derived as functions of thermodynamic quantities. By means of Monte Carlo simulations with the Wolff algorithm, we calculate the information flows in the Ising model with the Metropolis dynamics and the Glauber dynamics. We find that, not only the global Rényi transfer entropy, but also the pairwise Rényi transfer entropy peaks in the disorder phase. Therefore, the Rényi information flows may be used as better tools than the …
We study the approach towards equilibrium in a dynamic Ising model, the Q2R cellular automaton, with microscopic reversibility and conserved energy for an infinite one-dimensional system. Starting from a low-entropy state with positive magnetisation, we investigate how the system approaches equilibrium characteristics given by statistical mechanics. We show that the magnetisation converges to zero exponentially. The reversibility of the dynamics implies that the entropy density of the microstates is conserved in the time evolution. Still, it appears as if equilibrium, with a higher entropy den…
A frustrated Ising model on a diamond hierarchical lattice is studied. We obtain the exact partition function of this model and calculate the transition temperature, specific heat, entropy, magnetization, and ferromagnetic correlation function. Depending on the magnitude of a parameter giving the frustration, there exist three types of ground states: ferromagnetic, classical spin-liquid with highly developed short-range order, and paramagnetic. The dependence of the zero-temperature entropy on the frustration parameter has an infinite number of steps. The temperature dependence of the specific…
ConIII (pronounced CON-ee) is an open-source Python project providing a simple interface to solving the pairwise and higher order Ising model and a base for extension to other maximum entropy models. We describe the maximum entropy problem and give an overview of the algorithms that are implemented as part of ConIII (https://github.com/eltrompetero/coniii) including Monte Carlo histogram, pseudolikelihood, minimum probability flow, a regularized mean field method, and a cluster expansion method. Our goal is to make a variety of maximum entropy techniques accessible to those unfamiliar with the…
We study the spin-1/2 Ising-XXZ model on a decorated honeycomb lattice composed of five spins per unit cell, one Ising spin, and four Heisenberg spins. This model involving the Heisenberg exchange interaction is one of the few models that can be exactly solvable through the generalized star-triangle transformation. The significance of this model is its close relationship to the fully decorated quantum Heisenberg honeycomb lattice since 4/5 of the particles are Heisenberg spins. We investigate the phase diagram at zero temperature and identify a relevant quantum spin frustrated phase resulting …
We analyzed the entropy production in the majority-vote model by using a mean-field approximation and Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical rules of the model do not obey detailed balance so that entropy is continuously being produced. This nonequilibrium stochastic model is known to have a critical behavior belonging to the universality class of the equilibrium Ising model. We show that the entropy production also exhibits a singularity at the critical point similar to the one occurring in the entropy, or the energy, of the equilibrium Ising model.
We study the critical behavior of the entropy production of the Ising model subject to a magnetic field that oscillates in time. The mean-field model displays a phase transition that can be either first or second-order, depending on the amplitude of the field and on the frequency of oscillation. Within this approximation the entropy production rate is shown to have a discontinuity when the transition is first-order and to be continuous, with a jump in its first derivative, if the transition is second-order. In two dimensions, we find with numerical simulations that the critical behavior of the…
The statistics of domain walls for ground states of the 2D Ising spin glass with +1 and -1 bonds are studied for $L \times L$ square lattices with $L \le 48$, and $p$ = 0.5, where $p$ is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. When $L$ is even, almost all domain walls have energy $E_{dw}$ = 0 or 4. When $L$ is odd, most domain walls have $E_{dw}$ = 2. The probability distribution of the entropy, $S_{dw}$, is found to depend strongly on $E_{dw}$. When $E_{dw} = 0$, the probability distribution of $|S_{dw}|$ is approximately exponential. The varian…
We consider the entanglement entropy for the 2D Ising model at the conformal fixed point in the presence of interfaces. More precisely, we investigate the situation where the two subsystems are separated by a defect line that preserves conformal invariance. Using the replica trick, we compute the entanglement entropy between the two subsystems. We observe that the entropy, just like in the case without defects, shows a logarithmic scaling behavior with respect to the size of the system. Here, the prefactor of the logarithm depends on the strength of the defect encoded in the transmission coeff…
We present here the non-equilibrium dynamics of the recently studied quasiperiodic Ising model. The zero temperature phase diagram of this model mainly consists of three phases, where each of these three phases can have extended, localized or critically delocalized low energy excited states. We explore the nature of excitations in these different phases by studying the evolution of entanglement entropy after performing quenches of different strengths to different phases. Our results on non-equilibrium dynamics of entanglement entropy are concurrent with the nature of excitations discussed in R…
We introduce a nonextensive entropic measure $S_χ$ that grows like $N^χ$, where $N$ is the size of the system under consideration. This kind of nonextensivity arises in a natural way in some $N$-body systems endowed with long-range interactions described by $r^{-α}$ interparticle potentials. The power law (weakly nonextensive) behavior exhibited by $S_χ$ is intermediate between (1) the linear (extensive) regime characterizing the standard Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy and the (2) the exponential law (strongly nonextensive) behavior associated with the Tsallis generalized $q$-entropies. The functiona…
We numerically study the dynamics of entanglement entropy, induced by an oscillating time periodic driving of the transverse field, h(t), of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain. We consider several realizations of h(t), and we find a number of results in analogy with entanglement entropy dynamics induced by a sudden quantum quench. After short-time relaxation, the dynamics of entanglement entropy synchronises with h(t), displaying an oscillatory behaviour at the frequency of the driving. Synchronisation in the dynamics of entanglement entropy, is spoiled by the appearance of quasi-revivals w…
We investigate the role of a transverse field on the Ising square antiferromagnet with first-($J_1$) and second-($J_2$) neighbor interactions. Using a cluster mean-field approach, we provide a telltale characterization of the frustration effects on the phase boundaries and entropy accumulation process emerging from the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations. We found that the paramagnetic (PM) and antiferromagnetic phases are separated by continuous phase transitions. On the other hand, continuous and discontinuous phase transitions, as well as tricriticality, are observed in the p…
Geometric frustration effects were studied systematically with the Ising antiferromagnet on the 11 Archimedean lattices using the Monte-Carlo methods. The Wang-Landau algorithm for static properties (specific heat and residual entropy) and the Metropolis algorithm for a freezing order parameter were adopted. The exact residual entropy was also found. Based on the degree of frustration and dynamic properties, ground states of them were determined. The Shastry-Sutherland lattice and the trellis lattice are weakly-frustrated and have two-dimensional and one-dimensional long-range-ordered ground s…
The scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy in the two-dimensional random transverse field Ising model is studied numerically through the strong disordered renormalization group method. We find that the leading term of the entanglement entropy always scales linearly with the block size. However, besides this \emph{area law} contribution, we find a subleading logarithmic correction at the quantum critical point. This correction is discussed from the point of view of an underlying percolation transition, both at finite and at zero temperature.
We consider a bilayer quantum spin model with anisotropic intra-layer exchange couplings. By varying the anisotropy, the quantum critical phenomena changes from XY to Heisenberg to Ising universality class, with two, three and one modes respectively becoming gapless simultaneously. We use series expansion methods to calculate the second and third Renyi entanglement entropies when the system is bipartitioned into two parts. Leading area-law terms and subleading entropies associated with corners are separately calculated. We find clear evidence that the logarithmic singularity associated with th…
We consider the effects of the magnetic field on the frustrated phase states of the dilute Ising chain, especially, the behavior of the magnetic entropy change and the isentropic dependence of the temperature on the magnetic field, which are the key parameters of the magnetocaloric effect. The found temperature dependences of entropy demonstrate the nonequivalence of frustrated phases in the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic cases. In the antiferromagnetic case, the nonzero magnetic field at certain parameters causes a charge ordering for nonmagnetic impurities at a half-filling, while in th…
The ground-state degeneracy and magnetocaloric effect in the spin-$1/2$ Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain are exactly investigated. It is demonstrated that the zero-temperature phase diagram involves two classical and two quantum chiral phases with distinct degrees of the macroscopic degeneracy. Different macroscopic degeneracies observed in the latter phases and at individual ground-state phase transitions are confirmed by multiple-peak dependencies of the specific heat and entropy on the magnetic field. The cooling capability of the model is well illustrated by the magnetic-field var…
A new approach known as flat histogram method is used to study the +/-J Ising spin glass in two dimensions. Temperature dependence of the energy, the entropy, and other physical quantities can be easily calculated and we give the results for the zero-temperature limit. For the ground-state energy and entropy of an infinite system size, we estimate e0 = -1.4007 +/- 0.0085 and s0 = 0.0709 +/- 0.006, respectively. Both of them agree well with previous calculations. The time to find the ground-states as well as the tunneling times of the algorithm are also reported and compared with other methods.
We study the scaling of the Renyi and entanglement entropy of two disjoint blocks of critical Ising models, as function of their sizes and separations. We present analytic results based on conformal field theory that are quantitatively checked in numerical simulations of both the quantum spin chain and the classical two dimensional Ising model. Theoretical results match the ones obtained from numerical simulations only after taking properly into account the corrections induced by the finite length of the blocks to their leading scaling behavior.
The ground state entropy of the 2D Ising spin glass with +1 and -1 bonds is studied for $L \times M$ square lattices with $L \le M$ and $p$ = 0.5, where $p$ is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. From this we obtain the domain wall entropy as a function of $L$ and $M$. It is found that for domain walls which run in the short, $L$ direction, there are finite-size scaling functions which depend on the ratio $M / L^{d_S}$, where $d_S = 1.22 \pm 0.01$. When $M$ is larger than $L$, very different scaling forms are found for odd $L$ and even $L$. F…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the q -> 1/q duality in an information-entropy theory of all q-generalized entropy functionals (Tsallis, Renyi and Sharma-Mittal measures) in the light of a representation based on generalized exponential and logarithm functions subjected to Kolmogorov's and Nagumo's averaging. We show that it is precisely in this representation that the form invariance of all entropy functionals is maintained under the action of this duality. The generalized partition function also results to be a scalar invariant under the q -> 1/q transformation which can be interpret…
The distribution of the fractal dimension of the two-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature measured by the Monte-Carlo simulation is discussed. At small spatio-temporal scales it exhibits a multifractal behavior and is well fitted by a non-Gaussian distribution derived from the Rényi or Tsallis entropy.
Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effec…
Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters of selected shapes and sizes are studied by exact enumeration. In the ground state the magnetization and the entropy show step-wise variations with an applied magnetic field. The number of steps, their widths and heights depend on the cluster shape and size. While the character of the magnetization plateau heights is always increasing, the entropy is not necessarily decreasing function of the field, as one would expect. For selected clusters showing some interesting ground-state properties, the calculat…
The entanglement entropy of the random transverse-field Ising model is calculated by a numerical implementation of the asymptotically exact strong disorder renormalization group method in 2d, 3d and 4d hypercubic lattices for different shapes of the subregion. We find that the area law is always satisfied, but there are analytic corrections due to E-dimensional edges (1<=E<=d-2). More interesting is the contribution arising from corners, which is logarithmically divergent at the critical point and its prefactor in a given dimension is universal, i.e. independent of the form of disorder.
For $L \times L$ square lattices with $L \le 20$ the 2D Ising spin glass with +1 and -1 bonds is found to have a strong correlation between the energy and the entropy of its ground states. A fit to the data gives the result that each additional broken bond in the ground state of a particular sample of random bonds increases the ground state degeneracy by approximately a factor of 10/3. For $x = 0.5$ (where $x$ is the fraction of negative bonds), over this range of $L$, the characteristic entropy defined by the energy-entropy correlation scales with size as $L^{1.78(2)}$. Anomalous scaling is n…
Motivated by a recent proposal of a Bethe approximation for the triangular Ising antiferromagnet [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 56}, 8241 (1997)], which seems to predict a disordered phase at any temperature in zero field, we analyze in some detail several mean-field like approximations for this model, namely the Bethe approximation itself, the cluster variation method and the hard-spin mean-field theory. We show: (i) that the disordered phase predicted by the Bethe approximation is unphysical at low enough temperature because of a negative entropy; (ii) how the results of the cluster variation method (na…
We study a classical fully-frustrated honeycomb lattice Ising model using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and exact calculations . The Hamiltonian realizes a degenerate ground state manifold of equal-energy states, where each hexagonal plaquette of the lattice has one and only one frustrated bond, with an extensive residual entropy that grows as the number of spins N. Traditional single-spin flip Monte Carlo methods fail to sample all possible spin configurations in this ground state efficiently, due to their separation by large energy barriers. We develop a non-local "chain-flip" algorithm t…
I consider the problem of deriving couplings of a statistical model from measured correlations, a task which generalizes the well-known inverse Ising problem. After reminding that such problem can be mapped on the one of expressing the entropy of a system as a function of its corresponding observables, I show the conditions under which this can be done without resorting to iterative algorithms. I find that inverse problems are local (the inverse Fisher information is sparse) whenever the corresponding models have a factorized form, and the entropy can be split in a sum of small cluster contrib…
Competitive effects of so-called three-site four-spin interactions, single ion anisotropy and bilinear interactions is studied in the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a decorated square lattice. Exploring the decoration-iteration transformation, we have obtained exact closed-form expressions for the partition function and other thermodynamic quantities of the model. From these relations, we have numerically determined ground- state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the system. We have also investigated temperature variations of the correlation functions, internal energy, entropy…
We study numerically the entanglement entropy and spatial correlations of the one dimensional transverse field Ising model with three different perturbations. First, we focus on the out of equilibrium, steady state with an energy current passing through the system. By employing a variety of matrix-product state based methods, we confirm the phase diagram and compute the entanglement entropy. Second, we consider a small perturbation that takes the system away from integrability and calculate the correlations, the central charge and the entanglement entropy. Third, we consider periodically weake…
We present a numerical analysis of the entropy rate and statistical complexity related to the spin flip dynamics of the 2D Ising Ferromagnet at different temperatures T. We follow an information theoretic approach and test three different entropy estimation algorithms to asses entropy rate and statistical complexity of binary sequences. The latter are obtained by monitoring the orientation of a single spin on a square lattice of side-length L=256 at a given temperature parameter over time. The different entropy estimation procedures are based on the M-block Shannon entropy (a well established …
Much has been learned about universal properties of entanglement entropies in ground states of quantum many-body lattice systems. Here we unveil universal properties of the average bipartite entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the paradigmatic quantum Ising model in one dimension. The leading term exhibits a volume-law scaling that we argue is universal for translationally invariant quadratic models. The subleading term is constant at the critical field for the quantum phase transition and vanishes otherwise (in the thermodynamic limit), i.e., the critical field can be identified from suble…
The entanglement entropy in one dimensional critical systems with boundaries has been associated with the noninteger ground state degeneracy. This quantity, being a characteristic of boundary fixed points, decreases under renormalization group flow, as predicted by the g-theorem. Here, using conformal field theory methods, we exactly calculate the entanglement entropy in the boundary Ising universality class. Our expression can be separated into the well known bulk term and a boundary entanglement term, displaying a universal flow between two boundary conditions, in accordance with the g-theor…
The continuous ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in the two-dimensional Ising model has already been excessively studied by conventional canonical statistical analysis in the past. We use the recently developed generalized microcanonical inflection-point analysis method to investigate the least-sensitive inflection points of the microcanonical entropy and its derivatives to identify transition signals. Surprisingly, this method reveals that there are potentially two additional transitions for the Ising system besides the critical transition.
Owing to a high degree of geometrical frustration an Ising antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice (IAKL) is known to exhibit no long-range ordering at any temperature, including the ground state. Nevertheless, at low temperatures it shows a strongly correlated, highly fluctuating regime known as a cooperative paramagnet or classical spin liquid. In the ground state it is characterized by a macroscopic degeneracy which translates to a relatively large value of the residual entropy. It has been shown that the presence of a macroscopic degeneracy associated with geometrical frustration below the sat…
The statistics of domain walls for ground states of the 2D Ising spin glass with +1 and -1 bonds are studied for $L \times L$ square lattices with $L \le 20$, and $x$ = 0.25 and 0.5, where $x$ is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. Under these conditions, almost all domain walls have an energy $E_{dw}$ equal to 0 or 4. The probability distribution of the entropy, $S_{dw}$, is found to depend strongly on $E_{dw}$. The results for $S_{dw}$ when $E_{dw} = 4$ agree with the prediction of the droplet model. Our results for $S_{dw}$ when $E_{dw} = …
We study the frustration properties of the Ising model on a one-dimensional monoatomic equidistant lattice, taking into account the exchange interactions of atomic spins at the sites of the nearest, next-nearest, and third neighbors. The exact analytical expressions for the thermodynamic functions of the system are obtained using the Kramers--Wannier transfer matrix technique. Criteria for the emergence of magnetic frustrations in the presence of competition between the energies of exchange interactions are formulated. The points and intervals of the existence of frustrations, which depend on …
We consider two prototypical quantum models, the spin-1/2 XY chain and the quantum Ising chain and study their entanglement entropy, S(l,L), of blocks of l spins in homogeneous or inhomogeneous systems of length L. By using two different approaches, free-fermion techniques and perturbational expansion, an exact relationship between the entropies is revealed. Using this relation we translate known results between the two models and obtain, among others, the additive constant of the entropy of the critical homogeneous quantum Ising chain and the effective central charge of the random XY chain.
We consider the asymptotic state after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field quantum Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We compute the thermodynamic entropies of the generalised Gibbs and the diagonal ensembles and we find that the generalised Gibbs entropy is always twice the diagonal one. We show that particular care should be taken in extracting the thermodynamic limit since different averages of equivalent microstates give different results for the entropies.
We present numerical results for various information theoretic properties of the square lattice Ising model. First, using a bond propagation algorithm, we find the difference $2H_L(w) - H_{2L}(w)$ between entropies on cylinders of finite lengths $L$ and 2L with open end cap boundaries, in the limit $L\to\infty$. This essentially quantifies how the finite length correction for the entropy scales with the cylinder circumference $w$. Secondly, using the transfer matrix, we obtain precise estimates for the information needed to specify the spin state on a ring encircling an infinite long cylinder.…
We consider the two-dimensional (2d) Ising model on a infinitely long cylinder and study the probabilities $p_i$ to observe a given spin configuration $i$ along a circular section of the cylinder. These probabilities also occur as eigenvalues of reduced density matrices in some Rokhsar-Kivelson wave-functions. We analyze the subleading constant to the Rényi entropy $R_n=1/(1-n) \ln (\sum_i p_i^n)$ and discuss its scaling properties at the critical point. Studying three different microscopic realizations, we provide numerical evidence that it is universal and behaves in a step-like fashion as a…
