We study the frustration properties of the Ising model on a one-dimensional monoatomic equidistant lattice, taking into account the exchange interactions of atomic spins at the sites of the nearest, next-nearest, and third neighbors. The exact analytical expressions for the thermodynamic functions of the system are obtained using the Kramers--Wannier transfer matrix technique. Criteria for the emergence of magnetic frustrations in the presence of competition between the energies of exchange interactions are formulated. The points and intervals of the existence of frustrations, which depend on the values and signs of the exchange interactions, are found. The features of the entropy and heat capacity of this model in the frustration regime and its vicinity are investigated. Non-zero entropy values of the ground state of a frustrated system, as well as a two-peak temperature structure of the heat capacity in the vicinity of the frustration point, are found.
Magnetizations of ferro- and antiferromagnetic Ising models with frustration on diamond hierarchical lattices are exactly obtained at zero temperature. For the zero-field classical spin-liquid phase found in [Kobayashi {\it et al}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 78, 074004 (2009) ], for which frustrating interactions play an important role, an infinitely small applied magnetic field can induce an infinitely small magnetization, despite classical Ising models that have discrete energy levels. In antiferromagnetic systems, the magnetization cannot saturate under finite magnetic fields owing to the competiti…
Magnetization process of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is examined by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Multiple frustration-induced plateaus in a magnetization process of this geometrically frustrated system are found provided that a relative ratio between the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg- and Ising-type interactions exceeds some particular value. By contrast, there is just a single magnetization plateau if the frustrating Heisenberg interaction is sufficiently …
The frustration properties of the Ising model on a one-dimensional monoatomic equidistant lattice are investigated taking into account the exchange interactions of atomic spins at the sites of the first (nearest), second (next-nearest) and third neighbors. The exact solution of the model was obtained using the Kramers--Wannier transfer matrix method. The types of magnetic ordering of the ground state of the model are determined, and a magnetic phase diagram is constructed. Criteria are formulated for the occurrence of magnetic frustrations in the presence of competition between the energies of…
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain is exactly solved using its local gauge symmetry, which enables one to establish a rigorous mapping with the corresponding chain of composite Ising spins tractable within the transfer-matrix approach. Exact results derived for spin-spin correlation functions are employed to obtain the frustration temperature, at which a product of correlation functions along an elementary triangular plaquette becomes negative and the relevant spins experience a spin frustration. In addition, we have exactly calculated a concurrence quantifying thermal entanglemen…
In this paper, the frustration properties of the Ising model on a one-dimensional monoatomic equidistant lattice in an external magnetic field are investigated, taking into account the exchange interactions of atomic spins at the sites of the first, second, and third neighbors. Exact analytical expressions for the thermodynamic functions of the system are obtained by the Kramers--Wannier transfer-matrix method. A magnetic phase diagram of the ground state of such a spin system is constructed and studied thoroughly. The points and lines of frustrations of the system depending on the values and …
The spin-1/2 Ising model with a spin-phonon coupling on decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations is examined within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction, which competes with the nearest-neighbour interaction and is responsible for a frustration of the decorating spins. The strong enough spin-phonon coupling consequently leads to an appearance of the striking partially ordered and pa…
The mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice, which takes into account lattice vibrations of the spin-3/2 decorating magnetic ions at a quantum-mechanical level under the assumption of a perfect lattice rigidity of the spin-1/2 nodal magnetic ions, is examined via an exact mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice. Although the considered magnetic structure is in principle unfrustrated due to bipartite nature of a decorated square lattice, the model under investigation may display anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelas…
We study the spin-1/2 Ising-XXZ model on a decorated honeycomb lattice composed of five spins per unit cell, one Ising spin, and four Heisenberg spins. This model involving the Heisenberg exchange interaction is one of the few models that can be exactly solvable through the generalized star-triangle transformation. The significance of this model is its close relationship to the fully decorated quantum Heisenberg honeycomb lattice since 4/5 of the particles are Heisenberg spins. We investigate the phase diagram at zero temperature and identify a relevant quantum spin frustrated phase resulting …
We study the frustration properties of the Ising model on several decorated lattices with arbitrary numbers of decorating spins on all bonds of the lattice within an exact analytical approach based on the Kramers--Wannier transfer-matrix technique. The existence of magnetic frustrations in such situations and their influence on the behavior of the thermodynamic functions of systems is shown. The most important result of our study is related to the description of the possible coexistence of frustrations and long-range magnetic order in partially ordered spin systems.
Here is proposed a general subgraph-based method for efficiently sampling certain graphical models, typically using subgraphs of a fixed treewidth, and also a related method for finding minimum energy (ground) states. In the case of models with frustration, such as the spin glass, evidence is presented that this method can be more efficient than traditional single-site update methods.
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on martini and martini-diced lattice is exactly solved using a star-triangle transformation, which affords an exact mapping correspondence to an effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. The ground-state phase diagram of both investigated quantum spin models display two spontaneously ordered ferromagnetic phases and one macroscopically degenerate disordered phase. In contrast to a classical ferromagnetic phase where the spontaneous magnetization of the Ising as well as Heisenberg spins acquire fully saturated values the spontaneous magnetizatio…
We consider the $\pm J$ Ising model on a cubic lattice with a gauge-invariant disorder distribution. Disorder depends on a parameter $β_G$ that plays the role of a chemical potential for the amount of frustration. We study the model at a specific value of the disorder parameter $β_G$, where frustration shows long-range correlations. We characterize the universality class, obtaining accurate estimates of the critical exponents: $ν= 0.655(15)$ and $η_q = 1.05(5)$, where $η_q$ is the overlap susceptibility exponent.
Competitive effects of so-called three-site four-spin interactions, single ion anisotropy and bilinear interactions is studied in the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a decorated square lattice. Exploring the decoration-iteration transformation, we have obtained exact closed-form expressions for the partition function and other thermodynamic quantities of the model. From these relations, we have numerically determined ground- state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the system. We have also investigated temperature variations of the correlation functions, internal energy, entropy…
We conjecture the existence of a relationship between frustration and the transition point at zero temperature of Ising spin glasses. The relation reveals that, in several Ising spin glass models, the concentration of ferromagnetic bonds is close to the critical concentration at zero temperature when the output of a function about frustration is equal to unity. The function is the derivative of the average number of frustrated plaquettes with respect to the average number of antiferromagnetic bonds. This relation is conjectured in Ising spin glasses with binary couplings on two-dimensional lat…
Exact results of a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain are obtained applying a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Depending on the values of external field, exchange parameters and anisotropy, there exist six different phases in the ground state of the system. The magnetic order of these phases is briefly described in this work.
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising-Heisenberg diamond chains are examined within an exact analytical approach based on the generalized decoration-iteration map. A particular emphasis is laid on the investigation of the effect of geometric frustration, which is generated by the competition between Heisenberg- and Ising-type exchange interactions. It is found that an interplay between the geometric frustration and quantum effects gives rise to several quantum ground states with entangled spin states in addition to some semi-classically ordered o…
In this work, we investigate the phase transitions and critical behaviors of the frustrated J1-J2-J3 Ising model on the square lattice using Monte Carlo simulations, and particular attention goes to the effect of the second next nearest neighbor interaction J3 on the phase transition from a disordered state to the single stripe antiferromagnetic state. A continuous Ashkin-Teller-like transition behavior in a certain range of J3 is identified, while the 4-state Potts-critical end point [J3/J1]C is estimated based on the analytic method reported in earlier work [Jin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108,…
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on a decorated planar lattice accounting for lattice vibrations of decorating atoms is treated by making use of the canonical coordinate transformation, the decoration-iteration transformation, and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective single-ion anisotropy and three-site four-spin interaction, which are responsible for the anomalous spin frustration of the decorating spins in virtue of a competition with the equilibrium nearest-neighbor exchange interaction between the nodal and decorating …
Magnetization processes of Ising models with frustration on diamond hierarchical lattices, which contain vertices with high coordination numbers, are exactly obtained at zero temperature. In antiferromagnetic systems, the magnetization cannot saturate under finite magnetic fields owing to the competition between the antiferromagnetic and Zeeman interactions and the intrinsic long-range nature of hierarchical lattices. For the zero-field classical spin-liquid phase found in [Kobayashi et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 78, 074004 (2009)], an infinitely small applied magnetic field can induce an infinit…
We study multilayer triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnets with interlayer interactions that are weak and frustrated in an abc stacking. By analysing a coupled height model description of these systems, we show that they exhibit a classical spin liquid regime at low temperature, in which both intralayer and interlayer correlations are strong but there is no long range order. Diffuse scattering in this regime is concentrated on a helix in reciprocal space, as observed for charge-ordering in the materials LuFe$_2$O$_4$ and YbFe$_2$O$_4$.
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the exactly solvable mixed spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg planar model composed of identical trigonal bipyramids that are arranged into a regular archimedean lattice are examined with the aim to clarify the frustration phenomenon at zero and finite temperatures. It is shown that the ground-state spin frustration persists even far above the second-order phase transition. If the interaction ratio between the Heisenberg and Ising exchange interactions is close enough to the ground-state boundaries between the neighboring phases, a remarkable re-entranc…
We study the thermal properties of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) exchange couplings on the square lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, for $J_2/J_1 > 1/2 $, thermal fluctuations give rise to an effective $Z_2$ symmetry leading to a {\it finite-temperature} phase transition. We provide strong numerical evidence that this transition is in the 2D Ising universality class, and that $T_c\to 0$ with an infinite slope when $J_2/J_1\to 1/2$.
A frustrated Ising model on a diamond hierarchical lattice is studied. We obtain the exact partition function of this model and calculate the transition temperature, specific heat, entropy, magnetization, and ferromagnetic correlation function. Depending on the magnitude of a parameter giving the frustration, there exist three types of ground states: ferromagnetic, classical spin-liquid with highly developed short-range order, and paramagnetic. The dependence of the zero-temperature entropy on the frustration parameter has an infinite number of steps. The temperature dependence of the specific…
Geometric frustration effects were studied systematically with the Ising antiferromagnet on the 11 Archimedean lattices using the Monte-Carlo methods. The Wang-Landau algorithm for static properties (specific heat and residual entropy) and the Metropolis algorithm for a freezing order parameter were adopted. The exact residual entropy was also found. Based on the degree of frustration and dynamic properties, ground states of them were determined. The Shastry-Sutherland lattice and the trellis lattice are weakly-frustrated and have two-dimensional and one-dimensional long-range-ordered ground s…
We consider long, finite-width strips of Ising spins with randomly distributed couplings. Frustration is introduced by allowing both ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. Free energy and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated by transfer-matrix methods. Numerical derivatives and finite-size scaling concepts allow estimates of the usual critical exponents $γ/ν$, $α/ν$ and $ν$ to be obtained, whenever a second-order transition is present. Low-temperature ordering persists for suitably small concentrations of frustrated bonds, with a transition governed by pure--Ising exponents. Cont…
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg three-leg tube composed of the Heisenberg spin triangles mutually coupled through the Ising inter-triangle interaction is exactly solved in a zero magnetic field. By making use of the local conservation for the total spin on each Heisenberg spin triangle the model can be rigorously mapped onto a classical composite spin-chain model, which is subsequently exactly treated through the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram, correlation functions, concurrence, Bell function, entropy and specific heat are examined in detail. It is shown that the spin fr…
The extended model of two-leg Ising spin ladder with trimer rungs and next nearest neighbor interaction (NNN) in an external magnetic field is studied using the transfer matrix and linear renormalization group methods. In the standard version (with the same only NN interactions in both legs) such a ladder exhibits very interesting behavior - a frustration driven extremely sharp phase crossover at finite temperature which resembles a phase transition, impossible in one dimension. It is shown that in all considered cases with different interactions in each leg (assymetric ladder), with NNN inter…
New effects in the frustrated transverse Ising ring are predicted. The system is solved based on a mapping of Pauli spin operators to the Jordan-Wigner fermions. We group the low-lying energy levels into bands after imposing appropriate parity constraint, which projects out the redundant degrees of freedom brought about by the Jordan-Wigner fermions. In the region of strong antiferromagnetic coupling, we uncover an unusual gapless phase induced by the ring frustration. We demonstrate that its ground state exhibits a strong longitudinal spin-spin correlation and possesses a considerably large e…
We present a theoretical study of the phase diagram of a frustrated Ising model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions and long-range (Coulombic) antiferromagnetic interactions. For nonzero frustration, long-range ferromagnetic order is forbidden, and the ground-state of the system consists of phases characterized by periodically modulated structures. At finite temperatures, the phase diagram is calculated within the mean-field approximation. Below the transition line that separates the disordered and the ordered phases, the frustration-temperature phase diagram displays an infinite …
We studied the phase transitions and magnetic properties of the Ising model on a square lattice by the replica Monte Carlo method and by the method of transfer-matrix, the maximum eigenvalue of which was found by Lanczos method. The competing exchange interactions between nearest neighbors $J_{1}$, second $J_{2}$, third neighbors $J_{3}$ and an external magnetic field were taken into account. We found the frustration points and expressions for the frustration fields, at crossing of which cardinal changes of magnetic structures (translational invariance changes discontinuously) take place. A co…
High temperature modulations, meso-scale interactions and hyperscaling breakdown in Ising models with frustration: some insights from thermodynamic geometry
Recent results for the Ising model with first ($J_1$) and second ($J_2$) neighbour interactions on the body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice suggest that this model can host signatures of strong frustration, including Schottky anomalies and residual entropy, as well as, a spin-liquid-like phase [E. Jurčišinová and M. Jurčišin, Phys. Rev. B, 101 214443 (2020)]. Motivated by these findings, we investigate phase transitions and thermodynamics of this model using a cluster mean-field approach. In this lattice, tuning $g=J_2/J_1$ leads to a ground-state transition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and sup…
We investigate the role of a transverse field on the Ising square antiferromagnet with first-($J_1$) and second-($J_2$) neighbor interactions. Using a cluster mean-field approach, we provide a telltale characterization of the frustration effects on the phase boundaries and entropy accumulation process emerging from the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations. We found that the paramagnetic (PM) and antiferromagnetic phases are separated by continuous phase transitions. On the other hand, continuous and discontinuous phase transitions, as well as tricriticality, are observed in the p…
Magnetic frustrations and dimensionality play an important role in determining the nature of the magnetic long-range order and how it melts at temperatures above the ordering transition $T_N$. In this work, we use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study these phenomena in a class of frustrated Ising spin models in two spatial dimensions. We find that the melting of the magnetic long-range order into an isotropic gas-like paramagnet proceeds via an intermediate stage where the classical spins remain anisotropically correlated. This correlated paramagnet exists in a temperature range $T_N <…

We study the phase diagram of a topological string-net type lattice model in the presence of geometrically frustrated interactions. These interactions drive several phase transitions that reduce the topological order, leading to a rich phase diagram including both Abelian ($\mathbb{Z}_2$) and non-Abelian ($\text{Ising}\times \overline{\text{Ising}}$) topologically ordered phases, as well as phases with broken translational symmetry. Interestingly, one of these phases simultaneously exhibits (Abelian) topological order and long-ranged order due to translational symmetry breaking, with non-trivi…
We use Monte Carlo (MC) methods to simulate a two-dimensional (2D) bond-diluted Ising model on the square lattice which has frustration between the nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and the next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2. In this paper, we use the parallel tempering algorithm to study the thermodynamics for different diluted ratio x and give the phase diagram. The presence of both frustration and disorder results in a spin-glass phase, which exists between the stripe antiferromagnetic phase and the Neel phase. We present the ground-state energy of T -> 0 and the size-dependence of Edwards-…
We study phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interaction on a Kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A histogram data analysis shows that a second order transition occurs in the model. From the analysis of obtained data, we can assume that next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a Kagome lattice excite the occurrence of a second order transition and unusual behavior of thermodynamic properties on the temperature dependence.
We construct and analyse a dual model to the Ising model with the nearest and next-nearest neighbors on the rectangular lattice (NNNI model). The Hamiltonian of the dual model turns out to contain two- and four-spin interactions. The free fermion approximation suggests that an increase in the critical temperature of the dual model caused by the four-spin interactions is limited to a finite range.
We study the $S = 1$ triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations. Frustrations between a major antiferromagnetic third-neighbor interaction $J_3$ and a minor ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ cause incommensurate short-range orders at intermediate temperatures. At low temperatures (below $T/J_3 \lesssim 0.2$ for $J_1/J_3 = -1/3$), the system exhibits fourfold periodic ordered state. In the short-range order phase, the system shows a glassy two-step relaxation. We demonstrate that the features of the short-range order are attributed to the cooperation betw…
The kagome lattice -- a two-dimensional (2D) arrangement of corner-sharing triangles -- is at the forefront of the search for exotic states generated by magnetic frustration. Such states have been observed experimentally for Heisenberg and planar spins. In contrast, frustration of Ising spins on the kagome lattice has previously been restricted to nano-fabricated systems and spin-ice materials under applied magnetic field. Here, we show that the layered Ising magnet Dy3Mg2Sb3O14 hosts an emergent order predicted theoretically for individual kagome layers of in-plane Ising spins. Neutron-scatte…
Spin-spin correlations are calculated in frustrated hierarchical Ising models that exhibit chaotic renormalization-group behavior. The spin-spin correlations, as a function of distance, behave chaotically. The far correlations, but not the near correlations, are sensitive to small changes in temperature or frustration, with temperature changes having a larger effect. On the other hand, the calculated free energy, internal energy, and entropy are smooth functions of temperature. The recursion-matrix calculation of thermodynamic densities in a chaotic band is demonstrated. The leading Lyapunov e…
The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model is studied in two dimensions at finite temperature using the density matrix renormalization group. The model exhibits phase transition of the second-order between the antiphase in low temperature and the modulated phase in high temperature. Observing the domain wall free energy, we confirm that the modulation period in high-temperature side is well explained by the free-fermion picture.
The three-dimensional axial-next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model is studied by a modified tensor product variational approach (TPVA). A global phase diagram is constructed with numerous commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures. The devil's stairs behavior for the model is confirmed. The wavelength of the spin modulated phases increases to infinity at the boundary with the ferromagnetic phase. Widths of the commensurate phases are considerably narrower than those calculated by mean-field approximations.
In random networks decorated with Ising spins, an increase of the density of frustrations reduces the transition temperature of the spin-glass ordering. This result is in contradiction to the Bethe theory. Here we investigate if this effect depends on the small-world property of the network. The results on the specific heat and the spin susceptibility indicate that the effect appears also in spatial networks.
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of a special class of exactly solvable Ising-Heisenberg planar models are examined using the generalized decoration-iteration and star-triangle mapping transformations. The investigated spin systems exhibit an interesting quantum behaviour manifested in a remarkable geometric spin frustration, which appears notwithstanding the purely ferromagnetic interactions of the considered model systems. This kind of spin frustration originates from an easy-plane anisotropy in the XXZ Heisenberg interaction between nearest-neighbouring spins that favours ferr…
The geometric frustration in a class of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising-Heisenberg diamond chains is investigated by combining three exact analytical techniques: Kambe projection method, decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. The ground state, the magnetization process and the specific heat as a function of the external magnetic field are particularly examined for different strengths of the geometric frustration. It is shown that the increase of the Heisenberg spin value S raises the number of intermediate magnetization plateaux, which emerge in magnetization curve…
The ground state and the thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 asymmetric diamond Ising--Heisenberg chain are considered. For the $XYZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg interaction, the exact calculations of the free energy, entropy, heat capacity, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility are performed using the method of decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of antiferromagnetic interactions (Ising and $XXZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg ones), the ground state, magnetization process, temperature dependence of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity are investigated. The influence of…
We consider the Ising spin system, which stems out from the corresponding Multiple-spin exchange (MSE) Hamiltonian, on the special one--dimensional lattice, diamond-plaquette chain. Using the technique e of transfer-matrix we obtain the exact expression for system free energy with the aid of which we obtain the magnetization function. Analyzing magnetization curves for varies values of temperature and couplin constants we found the magnetization plateaux at 1/3 and 2/3 of the full moment. The corresponding microscopic spin configurations are unknown by virtue of high frustration.
Owing to a high degree of geometrical frustration an Ising antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice (IAKL) is known to exhibit no long-range ordering at any temperature, including the ground state. Nevertheless, at low temperatures it shows a strongly correlated, highly fluctuating regime known as a cooperative paramagnet or classical spin liquid. In the ground state it is characterized by a macroscopic degeneracy which translates to a relatively large value of the residual entropy. It has been shown that the presence of a macroscopic degeneracy associated with geometrical frustration below the sat…
Frustration represents an essential feature in the behavior of magnetic materials when constraints on the microscopic Hamiltonian cannot be satisfied simultaneously. This gives rise to exotic phases of matter including spin liquids, spin ices, and stripe phases. Here we demonstrate an approach to understanding the microscopic effects of frustration by computing the phases of a 468-spin Shastry-Sutherland Ising Hamiltonian using a quantum annealer. Our approach uses mean-field boundary conditions to mitigate effects of finite size and defects alongside an iterative quantum annealing protocol to…
We study a 3-dimensional Ising model in which the tendency to order due to short-range ferromagnetic interactions is frustrated by competing long-range (Coulombic) interactions. Complete ferromagnetic ordering is impossible for any nonzero value of the frustration parameter, but the system displays a variety of phases characterized by periodically modulated structures. We have performed extensive Monte-Carlo simulations which provide strong evidence that the microphase separation transition between paramagnetic and modulated phases is a fluctuation-induced first-order transition. Additional tr…
