The continuous ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in the two-dimensional Ising model has already been excessively studied by conventional canonical statistical analysis in the past. We use the recently developed generalized microcanonical inflection-point analysis method to investigate the least-sensitive inflection points of the microcanonical entropy and its derivatives to identify transition signals. Surprisingly, this method reveals that there are potentially two additional transitions for the Ising system besides the critical transition.
The site-diluted Ising model has been investigated using an improved microcanonical algorithm from Creutz Cellular Automaton. For a microcanonical algorithm, the basic problem is to estimate the correct temperatures using average values of the kinetic energy in the simulations of site-diluted Ising model. In this study, the average kinetic energy has been re-described with an expression dependent on dilution x=1-p. The values of the temperature have been calculated using the new expression and the critical temperatures have been estimated from the peaks of specific heat for each value of dilut…
This article offers a detailed analysis of pseudo-phase transitions of Ising and Baxter-Wu models in two-dimensional finite-size lattices. We carry out Wang Landau sampling to obtain the density of states. Using microcanonical inflection point analysis with microcanonical entropy, we obtain the order of the psuedo-phase transitions in the models. The microcanonical analysis results of the second-order transition for the Ising model and the first-order transition for the Baxter-Wu model are consistent with the traditional canonical results. In addition, the third-order transitions are found in …
We study the warming process of a semi-infinite cylindrical Ising lattice initially ordered and coupled at the boundary to a heat reservoir. The adoption of a proper microcanonical dynamics allows a detailed study of the time evolution of the system. As expected, thermal propagation displays a diffusive character and the spatial correlations decay exponentially in the direction orthogonal to the heat flow. However, we show that the approach to equilibrium presents an unexpected slow behavior. In particular, when the thermostat is at infinite temperature, correlations decay to their asymptotic …
A relation between a class of stationary points of the energy landscape of continuous spin models on a lattice and the configurations of a Ising model defined on the same lattice suggests an approximate expression for the microcanonical density of states. Based on this approximation we conjecture that if a O(n) model with ferromagnetic interactions on a lattice has a phase transition, its critical energy density is equal to that of the n = 1 case, i.e., a system of Ising spins with the same interactions. The conjecture holds true in the case of long-range interactions. For nearest-neighbor int…
A Microcanonical Finite Site Ansatz in terms of quantities measurable in a Finite Lattice allows to extend phenomenological renormalization (the so called quotients method) to the microcanonical ensemble. The Ansatz is tested numerically in two models where the canonical specific-heat diverges at criticality, thus implying Fisher-renormalization of the critical exponents: the 3D ferromagnetic Ising model and the 2D four-states Potts model (where large logarithmic corrections are known to occur in the canonical ensemble). A recently proposed microcanonical cluster method allows to simulate syst…
In a pioneer work, John Nagle has shown that an Ising chain with competing short and long-range interactions displays second and first-order phase transitions separated by a tricritical point. More recently, it has been claimed that Nagle's model provides an example of the inequivalence between canonical and microcanonical calculations. We then revisit Nagle's original solution, as well as the usual formulation of the problem in a canonical ensemble, which lead to the same results. Also, in contrast to recent claims, we show that an alternative formulation in the microcanonical ensemble, with …
We develop a scaling theory for the finite-size critical behavior of the microcanonical entropy (density of states) of a system with a critically-divergent heat capacity. The link between the microcanonical entropy and the canonical energy distribution is exploited to establish the former, and corroborate its predicted scaling form, in the case of the 3d Ising universality class. We show that the scaling behavior emerges clearly when one accounts for the effects of the negative background constant contribution to the canonical critical specific heat. We show that this same constant plays a sig…
We have studied needle shaped three-dimensional classical spin systems with purely dipolar interactions in the microcanonical ensemble, using both numerical simulations and analytical approximations. We have observed spontaneous magnetization for different finite cubic lattices. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase is shown to be first-order. For two lattice types we have observed magnetization flips in the phase transition region. In some cases, gaps in the accessible values of magnetization appear, a signature of the ergodicity breaking found for systems with long-…
Using both the exact enumeration method (microcanonical transfer matrix) for a small system (L = 9) and the Wang-Landau Monte Carlo algorithm for large systems to L = 30, we obtain the exact and approximate densities of states g(M,E), as a function of magnetization M and exchange energy E, for the triangular-lattice Ising model. Based on the density of states g(M,E), we investigate the phase transition properties of Yang-Lee zeros for the triangular Ising antiferromagnets and obtain the magnetic exponents at various temperatures.
By means of the principle of minimal sensitivity we generalize the microcanonical inflection-point analysis method by probing derivatives of the microcanonical entropy for signals of transitions in complex systems. A strategy of systematically identifying and locating independent and dependent phase transitions of any order is proposed. The power of the generalized method is demonstrated in applications to the ferromagnetic Ising model and a coarse-grained model for polymer adsorption onto a substrate. The results shed new light on the intrinsic phase structure of systems with cooperative beha…
In a disordered system one can either consider a microcanonical ensemble, where there is a precise constraint on the random variables, or a canonical ensemble where the variables are chosen according to a distribution without constraints. We address the question as to whether critical exponents in these two cases can differ through a detailed study of the random transverse-field Ising chain. We find that the exponents are the same in both ensembles, though some critical amplitudes vanish in the microcanonical ensemble for correlations which span the whole system and are particularly sensitive …
We study the order parameter probability distribution at the critical point for the three-dimensional spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising models on the simple cubic lattice with periodic boundary conditions. The finite size scaling relation for the order parameter probability distribution is tested and verified numerically by microcanonical Creutz cellular automata simulations. The state critical exponent δ, which characteries the far tail regime of the scaling order parameter probability distribution, is estimated for 3-d Ising models using the cellular automaton simulations at the critical temperature…
A model based on microcanonical Monte Carlo method is used to study the application of the temperature gradient along a two-dimensional (2D) Ising system. We estimate the system size effects on thermal conductivity, $K$, for a nano-scale Ising layer with variable size. It is shown that $K$ scales with size as $ K=cL^α$ where $α$ varies with temperature. Both the Metropolis and Cruetz algorithms have been used to establish the temperature gradient. Further results show that the average demon energy in the presence of an external magnetic field is zero for low temperatures.
The partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice with nearest-neighbour interactions and periodic boundary conditions is investigated. Kaufman [Phys. Rev. 76, 1232--1243 (1949)] gave a solution for this function consisting of four summands. The summands are rewritten as functions of a low-temperature expansion variable, resulting in polynomials with integer coefficients. Considering these polynomials for system sizes $2^m\times 2^n$ ($m,n\in\N$), a variety of recursion relations in $m,n$ are found. The recursions reveal a rich structure of the partition function an…

We study the phase transitions of a restricted solid-on-solid model coupled to an Ising model, which can be derived from the coupled XY-Ising model. There are two kinds of phase transition lines. One is a Ising transition line and the other is surface roughening transition line. The latter is a KT transition line from the viewpoint of the XY model. Using a microcanonical Monte Carlo technique, we obtain a very accurate two dimensional phase diagram. The two transition lines are separate in all the parameter space we study. This result is strong evidence that the fully frustrated XY model order…
Employing heuristic susceptibility equations in conjunction with the well-known critical exponents, the magnetization and partition function for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models are formulated in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. The isomorphism existing between the Bragg-Williams approximation and the exact solution of Onsager is pointed out. The precise manner in which the critical exponents influence the partition functions is pointed out.

We introduce a new microcanonical dynamics for a large class of Ising systems isolated or maintained out of equilibrium by contact with thermostats at different temperatures. Such a dynamics is very general and can be used in a wide range of situations, including disordered and topologically inhomogenous systems. Focusing on the two-dimensional ferromagnetic case, we show that the equilibrium temperature is naturally defined, and it can be consistently extended as a local temperature when far from equilibrium. This holds for homogeneous as well as for disordered systems. In particular, we will…
An oft-used concept in modeling macromolecules is the free energy landscape, obtained by coarse-graining a vast number of microstates into a low-dimensional mesh of mesostates. If the landscape contains two or more local minima (macrostates),one can compute global rate constants provided the dynamics of the dividing barrier regions are known. Here we compared experimental rate constants between ordered states in a kinetic Ising model with rates calculated from a coarse-grained master equation derived from the microcanonical ensemble. The coarse-grained macroscopic rate constants were roughly 5…
Inspired by the available examples of Microcanonical Szilárd Engines and by the original Szilárd Engine, we devise a system with two degrees of freedom whose ensemble average energy, starting with a microcanical ensemble, decreases after a cyclic variation of its external parameters. We use the Ergodic Adiabatic Theorem to motivate our cycle and numerical simulations to check the decrement in the average energy. We then compare our system to the aforementioned Szilárd Engines, Microcanonical or not, and speculate about symmetry breaking being the cause of energy extraction in cyclic processes,…

A method is presented, which allows to sample directly low-temperature configurations of glassy systems, like spin glasses. The basic idea is to generate ground states and low lying excited configurations using a heuristic algorithm. Then, with the help of microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations, more configurations are found, clusters of configurations are determined and entropies evaluated. Finally equilibrium configuration are randomly sampled with proper Gibbs-Boltzmann weights. The method is applied to three-dimensional Ising spin glasses with +- J interactions and temperatures T<=0.5. The…
This paper presents a geometric microcanonical ensemble perspective on two-dimensional Truncated Euler flows, which contain a finite number of (Fourier) modes and conserve energy and enstrophy. We explicitly perform phase space volume integrals over shells of constant energy and enstrophy. Two applications are considered. In a first part, we determine the average energy spectrum for highly condensed flow configurations and show that the result is consistent with Kraichnan's canonical ensemble description, despite the fact that no thermodynamic limit is invoked. In a second part, we compute the…
In order to gain a better understanding of the Ising model in higher dimensions we have made a comparative study of how the boundary, open versus cyclic, of a d-dimensional simple lattice, for d=1,...,5, affects the behaviour of the specific heat C and its microcanonical relative, the entropy derivative -dS/dU. In dimensions 4 and 5 the boundary has a strong effect on the critical region of the model and for cyclic boundaries in dimension 5 we find that the model displays a quasi first order phase transition with a bimodal energy distribution. The latent heat decreases with increasing systems …

Artificial antiferromagnets and synthetic metamagnets have attracted much attention recently due to their potential for many different applications. Under some simplifying assumptions these systems can be modeled by thin Ising metamagnetic films. In this paper we study, using both the Wang/Landau scheme and importance sampling Monte Carlo simulations, the equilibrium properties of these films. On the one hand we discuss the microcanonical density of states and its prominent features. On the other we analyze canonically various global and layer quantities. We obtain the phase diagram of thin Is…
Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we study the interface localization- delocalization transition of a thin Ising film with antisymmetric competing walls for a set of parameters where the transition is strongly first-order. This is achieved by estimating the density of states (DOS) of the model by means of Wang-Landau sampling (WLS) in the space of energy, using both, single-spin-flip as well as N-fold way updates. From the DOS we calculate canonical averages related to the configurational energy, like the internal energy, the specific heat, as well as the free energy and the entropy. By…
Using the concept of finite-size scaling, Monte Carlo calculations of various models have become a very useful tool for the study of critical phenomena, with the system linear dimension as a variable. As an example, several recent studies of Ising models are discussed, as well as the extension to models of polymer mixtures and solutions. It is shown that using appropriate cluster algorithms, even the scaling functions describing the crossover from the Ising universality class to the mean-field behavior with increasing interaction range can be described. Additionally, the issue of finite-size s…

We study the effect that randomness has on long-range interacting systems by using the ferromagnetic Ising model with $p$-body interactions in random fields. The case with p=2 yields a phase diagram similar to that of previously studied models and shows known features that inequivalence of the canonical and microcanonical ensembles brings with it, for example negative specific heat in a narrow region of the phase diagram. When p>2, however, the canonical phase diagram is completely different from the microcanonical one. The temperature does not necessarily determine the microcanonical phases u…
The Ising model, in presence of an external magnetic field, is isomorphic to a model of localized interacting particles satisfying the Fermi statistics. By using this isomorphism, we construct a general solution of the Ising model which holds for any dimensionality of the system. The Hamiltonian of the model is solved in terms of a complete finite set of eigenoperators and eigenvalues. The Green's function and the correlation functions of the fermionic model are exactly known and are expressed in terms of a finite small number of parameters that have to be self-consistently determined. By usin…

We present a microcanonical Monte Carlo simulation of the site-diluted Potts model in three dimensions with eight internal states, partly carried out in the citizen supercomputer Ibercivis. Upon dilution, the pure model's first-order transition becomes of the second-order at a tricritical point. We compute accurately the critical exponents at the tricritical point. As expected from the Cardy-Jacobsen conjecture, they are compatible with their Random Field Ising Model counterpart. The conclusion is further reinforced by comparison with older data for the Potts model with four states.
Recently, a surprising low-temperature behavior has been revealed in a two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs (Weiguo Yin, arXiv:2006.08921). Motivated by these findings, we study this model from another perspective and demonstrate that the reported observations are related to a critical phenomenon in the standard Ising chain. We also discuss a related curiosity, namely, the emergence of a power-law behavior characterized by quasicritical exponents.

A Hamiltonian dynamics is defined for the XY model by adding a kinetic energy term. Thermodynamical properties (total energy, magnetization, vorticity) derived from microcanonical simulations of this model are found to be in agreement with canonical Monte-Carlo results in the explored temperature region. The behavior of the magnetization and the energy as functions of the temperature are thoroughly investigated, taking into account finite size effects. By representing the spin field as a superposition of random phased waves, we derive a nonlinear dispersion relation whose solutions allow the c…
The fidelity per site between two ground states of a quantum lattice system corresponding to different values of the control parameter defines a surface embedded in a Euclidean space. The Gaussian curvature naturally quantifies quantum fluctuations that destroy orders at transition points. It turns out that quantum fluctuations wildly distort the fidelity surface near the transition points, at which the Gaussian curvature is singular in the thermodynamic limit. As a concrete example, the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field is analyzed. We also perform a finite size scalin…
The lecture delivered at the \emph{Current Developments in Mathematics} conference (Harvard-MIT, 2021) focused on the recent proof of the Gaussian structure of the scaling limits of the critical Ising and $φ^4$ fields in the marginal case of four dimensions(joint work with Hugo Duminil-Copin). These notes expand on the background of the question addressed by this result, approaching it from two partly overlapping perspectives: one concerning critical phenomena in statistical mechanics and the other functional integrals over Euclidean spaces which could serve as a springboard to quantum field t…
We show that confinement in the quantum Ising model leads to nonthermal eigenstates, in both continuum and lattice theories, in both one (1D) and two dimensions (2D). In the ordered phase, the presence of a confining longitudinal field leads to a profound restructuring of the excitation spectrum, with the low-energy two-particle continuum being replaced by discrete 'meson' modes (linearly confined pairs of domain walls). These modes exist far into the spectrum and are atypical, in the sense that expectation values in the state with energy $E$ do not agree with the microcanonical (thermal) ense…
Here we present a new perspective to the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional spin-lattice models employing the rotation of the underlying lattice. Using an Ising spin system on a square lattice as a prototype, we demonstrate that an additional low-symmetry interaction may lead to the absence of the truly long-range order and forms aperiodic structure, such as magnetic stripes. Employing annealing and entropic Monte Carlo simulations, we show that our model allows tuning between different phases, magnetically ordered as well as more exotic nonmagnetic phases such as Ising-nemati…
To understand the collinear-magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in multiferroic Ca3CoMnO6 compound, we have established an elastic diatomic Ising spin-chain model with axial-next-nearest-neighbor interaction to describe its magnetoelectric properties. By employing magneto-phonon decoupling and transfer-matrix method, the possible ground-state configurations and thermodynamic behaviors of the system have been exactly determined. From the perspective of the ground-state configuration, we analyze the computational results and make a detail comparison with experimental data. The parameter relation f…
Dynamical detection of quantum phases and phase transitions (QPT) in quenched systems with experimentally convenient initial states is a topic of interest from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Quenched from polarized states, longitudinal magnetization decays exponentially to zero in time for the short-range transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) and hence, has a featureless steady state regime, which prevents it from exhibiting dynamical phase transitions of type-I. In this paper, we ask whether the transient regimes of such non-equilibrium processes probed by single-site observabl…
The thermal dynamics of the two-dimensional Ising model and quantum dynamics of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) are mapped to one another through the transfer-matrix formalism. We show that the fermionised TFIM undergoes a Fermi-surface topology-changing Lifshitz transition at its critical point. We identify the degree of freedom which tracks the Lifshitz transition via changes in topological quantum numbers (e.g., Chern number, Berry phase etc.). An emergent $SU(2)$ symmetry at criticality is observed to lead to a topological quantum number different from that which ch…
Nonequilibrium states of closed quantum many-body systems defy a thermodynamic description. As a consequence, constraints such as the principle of equal a priori probabilities in the microcanonical ensemble can be relaxed, which can lead to quantum states with novel properties of genuine nonequilibrium nature. In turn, for the theoretical description it is in general not sufficient to understand nonequilibrium dynamics on the basis of the properties of the involved Hamiltonians. Instead it becomes important to characterize time-evolution operators which adds time as an additional scale to the …
This article investigates the relationship between the interconnectivity and simulated dynamics of the thalamocortical system from the specific perspective of attempting to maximize the diversity of cortical states. This is achieved by designing the dynamics such that they favor opposing activity between adjacent regions, thus promoting dynamic diversity while avoiding widespread activation or de-activation. The anti-ferromagnetic Ising model with Metropolis dynamics is adopted and applied to four variations of the large-scale connectivity of the cat thalamocortical system: (a) considering onl…

We study and present the results of qIm and longer range quantum Ising model (lqIm) in presence of strong correlation. We do the quantum field theoretical renormalization group (RG) calculation to study the behaviour of RG flow lines for different couplings for different region of parameter space. We show how the strong correlation effect enrich the quantum physics of these two systems.
