This article offers a detailed analysis of pseudo-phase transitions of Ising and Baxter-Wu models in two-dimensional finite-size lattices. We carry out Wang Landau sampling to obtain the density of states. Using microcanonical inflection point analysis with microcanonical entropy, we obtain the order of the psuedo-phase transitions in the models. The microcanonical analysis results of the second-order transition for the Ising model and the first-order transition for the Baxter-Wu model are consistent with the traditional canonical results. In addition, the third-order transitions are found in both models, implying the universality of higher-order phase transitions.
We study the early time behavior of the Baxter-Wu model, an Ising model with three-spin interactions on a triangular lattice. Our estimates for the dynamic exponent $z$ are compatible with results recently obtained for two models which belong to the same universality class of the Baxter-Wu model: the two-dimensional four-state Potts model and the Ising model with three-spin interactions in one direction. However, our estimates for the dynamic exponent $θ$ of the Baxter-Wu model are completely different from the values obtained for those models. This discrepancy could be related to the absence …
It is shown that the location of the Fisher zeros of the Baxter-Wu model, for two series of finite sized clusters, with spherical boundary conditions, is extremely simple. They lie on the unit circle in the complex Sinh[2\b{eta}J3] plane. This is the same location as the Fisher zeros of the Ising model with nearest neighbor interactions, J2, on the square lattice have, with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions. The Baxter-Wu model is an Ising model with three site interactions, J3, on the triangle lattice. From the leading Fisher zeros, using finite size scaling, accurate estimates of the critica…
We consider the critical spin-spin correlation function of the Ashkin-Teller and Baxter models. By using path-integral techniques in the continuum description of these models in terms of fermion fields, we show that the correlation decays with distance with the same critical exponent as the Ising model. The procedure is straightforwardly extended to take into account the presence of a line defect. Thus we find that in these altered models the critical index of the magnetic correlation on the defect coincides with the one of the defective 2D Ising or Bariev's model.
We continue our investigation of the Baxter-Bazhanov-Stroganov or τ^{(2)}-model using the method of separation of variables [nlin/0603028,arXiv:0708.4342]. In this paper we derive for the first time the factorized formula for form-factors of the Ising model on a finite lattice conjectured previously by A.Bugrij and O.Lisovyy in [arXiv:0708.3625,arXiv:0708.3643]. We also find the matrix elements of the spin operator for the finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field.
We studied the pure and dilute Baxter-Wu (BW) models using the Wang-Landau (WL) sampling method to calculate the Density-Of-States (DOS). We first used the exact result for the DOS of the Ising model to test our code. Then we calculated the DOS of the dilute Ising model to obtain a phase diagram, in good agreement with previous studies. We calculated the energy distribution, together with its first, second and fourth moments, to give the specific heat and the energy fourth order cumulant, better known as the Binder parameter, for the pure BW model. For small samples, the energy distribution di…
We discuss a geometrical interpretation of the Z-invariant Ising model in terms of isoradial embeddings of planar lattices. The Z-invariant Ising model can be defined on an arbitrary planar lattice if and only if certain paths on the lattice edges do not intersect each other more than once or self-intersect. This topological constraint is equivalent to the existence of isoradial embeddings of the lattice. Such embeddings are characterized by angles which can be related to the model coupling constants in the spirit of Baxter's geometrical solution. The Ising model on isoradial embeddings studie…
Using the Sklyanin-Kharchev-Lebedev method of Separation of Variables adapted to the cyclic Baxter--Bazhanov--Stroganov or $τ^{(2)}$-model, we derive factorized formulae for general finite-size Ising model spin matrix elements, proving a recent conjecture by Bugrij and Lisovyy.
The universality class, even the order of the transition, of the two-dimensional Ising model depends on the range and the symmetry of the interactions (Onsager model, Baxter-Wu model, Turban model, etc.), but the critical temperature is generally the same due to self-duality. Here we consider a sudden change in the form of the interaction and study the nonequilibrium critical dynamical properties of the nearest-neighbor model. The relaxation of the magnetization and the decay of the autocorrelation function are found to display a power law behavior with characteristic exponents that depend on …
The spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain in a magnetic field displays a remarkable pseudo-transition whenever it is driven sufficiently close to a ground-state phase boundary between a classical ferrimagnetic phase and a highly degenerate frustrated phase. The pseudo-transition of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain relates to intense thermal excitations from a nondegenerate ferrimagnetic ground state to a highly degenerate manifold of excited states with a frustrated character, which are responsible for an anomalous behavior of thermodynamic quantities. Temperature dependences of entropy and specific he…
Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction and two different Ising quartic interactions is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-square transformation, which establishes a precise mapping equivalence with the corresponding eight-vertex model on a square lattice generally satisfying Baxter's zero-field (symmetric) condition. The investigated model exhibits a remarkable weak-universal critical behavior with two marked wings of critical lines along which critical exponents vary continuously with the interaction parameters. Both wings of critical lines merg…
We consider the competition of magnetic and charge ordering in high-Tc cuprates within the framework of the simplified static 2D spin-pseudospin model. This model is equivalent to the 2D dilute antiferromagnetic (AFM) Ising model with charged impurities. We present the mean-field results for the system under study and make a brief comparison with classical Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. Numerical simulations show that the cases of strong exchange and strong charge correlation differ qualitatively. For a strong exchange, the AFM phase is unstable with respect to the phase separation (PS) into t…
A few paradigmatic one-dimensional lattice-statistical spin models have recently attracted a vigorous scientific interest owing to their peculiar thermodynamic behavior, which is highly reminiscent of a temperature-driven phase transition. The pseudotransitions of one-dimensional lattice-statistical spin models differ from actual phase transitions in several important aspects: the first-order derivatives of the Gibbs free energy such as entropy or magnetization exhibit near a pseudo-transition an abrupt continuous change instead of a true discontinuity, whereas the second-order derivatives of …
Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group to contract the tensor network that describes its partition function, we investigate the nature of the phase transitions of the hard-square model, one of the exactly solved models of statistical physics for which Baxter has found an integrable manifold. The motivation is twofold: assess the power of tensor networks for such models, and probe the 2D classical analog of a 1D quantum model of hard-core bosons that has recently attracted significant attention in the context of experiments on chains of Rydberg atoms. Accordingly, we concentrate…

We study the stationary properties of the Ising model that, while evolving towards its equilibrium state at temperature $T$ according to the Glauber dynamics, is stochastically reset to its fixed initial configuration with magnetisation $m_0$ at a constant rate $r$. Resetting breaks detailed balance and drives the system to a non-equilibrium stationary state where the magnetisation acquires a nontrivial distribution, leading to a rich phase diagram in the $(T,r)$ plane. We establish these results exactly in one-dimension and present scaling arguments supported by numerical simulations in two-d…
The Ashkin-Teller (AT) model is a generalization of Ising 2-d to a four states spin model; it can be written in the form of two Ising layers (in general with different couplings) interacting via a four-spin interaction. It was conjectured long ago (by Kadanoff and Wegner, Wu and Lin, Baxter and others) that AT has in general two critical points, and that universality holds, in the sense that the critical exponents are the same as in the Ising model, except when the couplings of the two Ising layers are equal (isotropic case). We obtain an explicit expression for the specific heat from which we…
One-dimensional systems with short-range interactions cannot exhibit a long-range order at nonzero temperature. However, there are some particular one-dimensional models, such as the Ising-Heisenberg spin models with a variety of lattice geometries, which exhibit unexpected behavior similar to the discontinuous or continuous temperature-driven phase transition. Although these pseudo-transitions are not true temperature-driven transitions showing only abrupt changes or sharp peaks in thermodynamic quantities, they may be confused while interpreting experimental data. Here we consider the spin-$…
Recently has been observed for some one-dimensional models that exhibit unexpected pseudo-transitions and quasi-phases. This pseudo-transition resembles a first- and second-order phase transition simultaneously. One of those models is the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ diamond chain, composed of Ising spin particles at the nodal sites and the Heisenberg spin particles at the interstitial sites. Where we assume Ising-type interaction between the nodal and interstitial sites, the Heisenberg-type interaction between interstitial sites, and with an external magnetic field applied along the z-axis. This model …
We study the challenging thermal phase transition to stripe order in the frustrated square-lattice Ising model with couplings J1<0 (nearest-neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J2>0 (second-neighbor, antiferromagnetic) for g=J2/|J1|>1/2. Using Monte Carlo simulations and known analytical results, we demonstrate Ashkin-Teller criticality for g>= g*, i.e., the critical exponents vary continuously between those of the 4-state Potts model at g=g* and the Ising model for g -> infinity. Thus, stripe transitions offer a route to realizing a related class of conformal field theories with conformal charge c=1 …
We study the distribution of finite size pseudo-critical points in a one-dimensional random quantum magnet with a quantum phase transition described by an infinite randomness fixed point. Pseudo-critical points are defined in three different ways: the position of the maximum of the average entanglement entropy, the scaling behavior of the surface magnetization, and the energy of a soft mode. All three lead to a log-normal distribution of the pseudo-critical transverse fields, where the width scales as $L^{-1/ν}$ with $ν=2$ and the shift of the average value scales as $L^{-1/ν_{typ}}$ with $ν_{…
Recently, it has been rigorously verified that several one-dimensional (1D) spin models may exhibit a peculiar pseudo-transition accompanied with anomalous response of thermodynamic quantities in a close vicinity of pseudo-critical temperature. In the present work we will introduce and exactly solve a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field as another particular example of 1D lattice-statistical model with short-range interactions that displays a pseudo-transition of this type. The investigated model exhibits at zero temperature three ferrimag…
The exact energy spectrum is developed for a two temperature kinetic Ising spin chain, and its dual reaction diffusion system with spatially alternating pair annihilation and creation rates. Symmetries of the system pseudo-Hamiltonian that enable calculation of the spectrum are also used to derive explicit state vectors for small system sizes, and to make observations regarding state vectors in the general case. Physical consequences of the surprisingly simple form for the eigenvalues are also discussed.
Starting from the five-loop renormalization-group expansions for the two-dimensional Euclidean scalar ϕ^4 field theory (field-theoretical version of two-dimensional Ising model), pseudo-εexpansions for the Wilson fixed point coordinate g*, critical exponents, and the sextic effective coupling constant g_6 are obtained. Pseudo-εexpansions for g*, inverse susceptibility exponent γ, and g_6 are found to possess a remarkable property - higher-order terms in these expansions turn out to be so small that accurate enough numerical estimates can be obtained using simple Pade approximants, i. e. withou…
The properties of the ground state of the simplest frustrated system, the dilute Ising chain in a magnetic field, are rigorously investigated over the entire range of concentrations of charged non-magnetic impurities. Analytical methods are proposed for calculating the residual entropy of frustrated states, including states at phase boundaries, which are based on the Markov property of the system and involve solving a linear optimization problem for energy and a nonlinear optimization problem for entropy. These methods allow obvious generalizations for one-dimensional pseudospin models with an…
Mean field (MF) approximation offers a simple, fast way to infer direct interactions between elements in a network of correlated variables, a common, computationally challenging problem with practical applications in fields ranging from physics and biology to the social sciences. However, MF methods achieve their best performance with strong regularization, well beyond Bayesian expectations, an empirical fact that is poorly understood. In this work, we study the influence of pseudo-count and $L_2$-norm regularization schemes on the quality of inferred Ising or Potts interaction networks from c…
The Ising model in two dimensions with the special boundary conditions of Brascamp and Kunz is analysed. Leading and sub-dominant scaling behaviour of the Fisher zeroes are determined exactly. The finite-size scaling, with corrections, of the specific heat is determined both at the critical and pseudocritical points. The shift exponents associated with scaling of the pseudocritical points are not the same as the inverse correlation length critical exponent. All corrections to scaling are analytic.
This work is a contribution to the study of universality in out-of-equilibrium lattice models undergoing a second-order phase transition at equilibrium. The experimental protocol that we have chosen is the following: the system is prepared in its high-temperature phase and then quenched at the critical temperature $T_c$. We investigated by mean of Monte Carlo simulations two quantities that are believed to take universal values: the exponent $λ/z$ obtained from the decay of autocorrelation functions and the asymptotic value $X_\infty$ of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X(t,s)$. This protoco…
We study the thermodynamics of discrete breathers by transforming a lattice of weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators into an effective Ising pseudospin model. We introduce a replica ensemble and investigate the effective system susceptibilities through the replica overlap distribution. We find that a transition occurs at a given temperature to a new phase characterized by a slow decay of the relevant correlation functions. Comparison of long time pseudospin correlation functions to maximal replica overlap demonstrates that the high temperature phase has glassy-like properties induced by short r…
We consider d=2 Ising strip with surface fields acting on boundary spins. Using the properties of the transfer matrix spectrum we identify two pseudotransition temperatures and show that they satisfy similar scaling relations as expected for real transition temperatures in strips with d>2. The solvation force between the boundaries of the strip is analysed as a function of temperature, surface fields and the width of the strip. For large widths the solvation force can be described by scaling functions in three different regimes: in the vicinity of the critical wetting temperature of 2D semi-in…
We study the 2D Ising model on a square lattice with additional non-equal diagonal next-nearest neighbor interactions. The cases of classical and quantum (transverse) models are considered. Possible phases and their locations in the space of three Ising couplings are analyzed. In particular, incommensurate phases occurring only at non-equal diagonal couplings, are predicted. We also analyze a spin-pseudospin model comprised of the quantum Ising model coupled to XY spin chains in a particular region of interactions, corresponding to the Ising sector's super-antiferromagnetic (SAF) ground state.…
The ratios $R_{2k}$ of renormalized coupling constants $g_{2k}$ that enter the effective potential and small-field equation of state acquire the universal values at criticality. They are calculated for the three-dimensional scalar $λϕ^4$ field theory (3D Ising model) within the pseudo-$ε$ expansion approach. Pseudo-$ε$ expansions for the critical values of $g_6$, $g_8$, $g_{10}$, $R_6 = g_6/g_4^2$, $R_8 = g_8/g_4^3$ and $R_{10} = g_{10}/g_4^4$ originating from the five-loop renormalization group (RG) series are derived. Pseudo-$ε$ expansions for the sextic coupling have rapidly diminishing coe…
In this paper and its sequel, we construct topologically invariant defects in two-dimensional classical lattice models and quantum spin chains. We show how defect lines commute with the transfer matrix/Hamiltonian when they obey the defect commutation relations, cousins of the Yang-Baxter equation. These relations and their solutions can be extended to allow defect lines to branch and fuse, again with properties depending only on topology. In this part I, we focus on the simplest example, the Ising model. We define lattice spin-flip and duality defects and their branching, and prove they are t…
In this paper, based on a one-dimensional non-Hermitian spin model with $\mathcal{RT}$-invariant term, we study the non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. By using the high-order perturbation method, an effective pseudo-spin model is obtained to describe non-Hermitian physics for the two (nearly) degenerate ground states, which are precisely consistent with the numerical calculations. We found that there may exist effective (anti) $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry for the effective pseudo-spin model of the two (nearly) degenerate ground states. In particular, there exists s…
Pseudo entropy is an interesting quantity with a simple gravity dual, which generalizes entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and a final state. Here we reveal the basic properties of pseudo entropy in quantum field theories by numerically calculating this quantity for a set of two-dimensional free scalar field theories and the Ising spin chain. We extend the Gaussian method for pseudo entropy in free scalar theories with two parameters: mass $m$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This computation finds two novel properties of Pseudo entropy which we conjecture to be universal …
The two-dimensional Ising model with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions has a partition function more amenable to analysis than its counterpart on a torus. This fact is exploited to exactly determine the full finite-size scaling behaviour of the Fisher zeroes of the model. Moreover, exact results are also determined for the scaling of the specific heat at criticality, for the specific-heat peak and for the pseudocritical points. All corrections to scaling are found to be analytic and the shift exponent $λ$ does not coincide with the inverse of the correlation length exponent $1/ν$.
We investigate critical properties of the stacked-$J_1$-$J_2$ Ising model on a cubic lattice. Using Monte Carlo simulations and renormalization group, we find a single phase transition of the first order for $J_2/J_1>1/2$. The renormgroup approach predicts that a transition can be of the second order from the universality class of the $O(2)$ model, but the Monte Carlo results show another set of critical exponents: exponents continuously vary form the values typical for a first-order transition in the finite-size scaling theory at $1/2<J_2/J_1<1$ to the Ising values in the limit $J_2/J_1\to\in…
We discuss the effects of exponential fragmentation of the Hilbert space on phase transitions in the context of coupled ferromagnetic Ising models in arbitrary dimension with special emphasis on the one dimensional case. We show that the dynamics generated by quantum fluctuations is bounded within spatial partitions of the system and weak mixing of these partitions caused by global transverse fields leads to a zero temperature phase with ordering in the local product of both Ising copies but no long range order in either species. This leads to a natural connection with the Ashkin-Teller univer…
We consider the random transverse-field Ising model in $d=3$ dimensions with long-range ferromagnetic interactions which decay as a power $α> d$ with the distance. Using a variant of the strong disorder renormalization group method we study numerically the phase-transition point from the paramagnetic side. The distribution of the (sample dependent) pseudo-critical points is found to scale with $1/\ln L$, $L$ being the linear size of the sample. Similarly, the critical magnetization scales with $(\ln L)^χ/L^d$ and the excitation energy behaves as $L^{-α}$. Using extreme-value statistics we argu…
