Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effective critical point in the finite sample. On the basis of homogeneous chains, we demonstrate that the scaling behavior of the entropy near the quantum phase transition is in agreement with the universality hypothesis, and calculate the shift of the effective critical point, which has different scaling behaviors for open and for periodic boundary conditions.
We show that scaling arguments are very useful to analyze the dynamics of periodically modulated noisy systems. Information about the behavior of the relevant quantities, such as the signal-to-noise ratio, upon variations of the noise level, can be obtained by analyzing the symmetries and invariances of the system. In this way, it is possible to predict diverse physical manifestations of the cooperative behavior between noise and input signal, as for instance stochastic resonance, spatiotemporal stochastic resonance, and stochastic multiresonance.
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
We investigate dynamics of activated escape in periodically modulated systems. The trajectories followed in escape form diffusion broadened tubes, which are periodically repeated in time. We show that these tubes can be directly observed and find their shape. Quantitatively, the tubes are characterized by the distribution of trajectories that, after escape, pass through a given point in phase space for a given modulation phase. This distribution may display several peaks separated by the modulation period. Analytical results agree with the results of simulations of a model Brownian particle in…
The rate of noise-induced escape from a metastable state of a periodically modulated overdamped system is found for an arbitrary modulation amplitude $A$. The instantaneous escape rate displays peaks that vary with the modulation from Gaussian to strongly asymmetric. The prefactor $ν$ in the period-averaged escape rate depends on $A$ nonmonotonically. Near the bifurcation amplitude $A_c$ it scales as $ν\propto (A_c-A)^ζ$. We identify three scaling regimes, with $ζ= 1/4, -1$, and 1/2.
Understanding the equilibration of isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics is an interesting topic. In this paper, we look at the early time behaviour of periodically and quasi-periodically driven Transverse field Ising chains when and their corresponding dynamical free energies. We study the system under different frequencies and observe how the system evolves with changes in the field amplitudes in both types of oscillations.
We numerically study the dynamics of entanglement entropy, induced by an oscillating time periodic driving of the transverse field, h(t), of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain. We consider several realizations of h(t), and we find a number of results in analogy with entanglement entropy dynamics induced by a sudden quantum quench. After short-time relaxation, the dynamics of entanglement entropy synchronises with h(t), displaying an oscillatory behaviour at the frequency of the driving. Synchronisation in the dynamics of entanglement entropy, is spoiled by the appearance of quasi-revivals w…
The dynamical Ising model under the effect of the amplitude modulated time dependent periodic magnetic field has been solved by using EFT with Glauber type of stochastic process. Several cases with amplitude modulation have been investigated. It has been shown that, amplitude modulation could display dynamical phase transition on the magnetic system.
This book chapter describes the dynamics of a modulated oscillator for resonant and nonresonant modulation. Two types of resonant modulation are considered: additive, with frequency close to the oscillator eigenfrequency, and parametric, with frequency close to twice the eigenfrequency. It is shown that relaxation of the oscillator is accompanied by quantum noise, which leads to a finite-width distribution over quantum states even for T=0. The quantum noise also leads to switching between coexisting vibrational states via transitions over the barrier in phase space. The switching mechanism, qu…
We study the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-condensed gas in an optical lattice. Of primary interest is the long wavelength phonon dispersion for both current-free and current-carrying condensates. We obtain the dispersion relation by carrying out a systematic expansion of the Bogoliubov equations in powers of the phonon wave vector. Our result for the current-carrying case agrees with the one recently obtained by means of a hydrodynamic theory.
Dynamic behavior of a site diluted Ising ferromagnet in the presence of periodically oscillating magnetic field has been analyzed by means of the effective field theory (EFT). Dynamic equation of motion have been solved for a honeycomb lattice ($z=3$) with the help of a Glauber type stochastic process. The global phase diagrams and the variation of the corresponding dynamic order parameter as a function of the Hamiltonian parameters and temperature has been investigated in detail and it has been shown that the system exhibits reentrant phenomena, as well as a dynamic tricritical point which di…
We study a 3-dimensional Ising model in which the tendency to order due to short-range ferromagnetic interactions is frustrated by competing long-range (Coulombic) interactions. Complete ferromagnetic ordering is impossible for any nonzero value of the frustration parameter, but the system displays a variety of phases characterized by periodically modulated structures. We have performed extensive Monte-Carlo simulations which provide strong evidence that the microphase separation transition between paramagnetic and modulated phases is a fluctuation-induced first-order transition. Additional tr…
The phase transitions in the transverse field Ising model in a competing spatially modulated (periodic and oscillatory) longitudinal field are studied numerically. There is a multiphase point in absence of the transverse field where the degeneracy for a longitudinal field of wavelength $λ$ is $(\frac {1 + \sqrt{5}}{2})^{2N/λ}$ for a system with $N$ spins, an exact result obtained from the known result for $λ=2$. The phase transitions in the $Γ$ (transverse field) versus $h_0$ (amplitude of the longitudinal field) phase diagram are obtained from the vanishing of the mass gap $Δ$. We find that f…
We investigated the Ising model on a square lattice with ferro and antiferromagnetic interactions modulated by the quasiperiodic Octonacci sequence in both directions of the lattice. We have applied the Replica Exchange Monte Carlo (Parallel Tempering) technique to calculate the thermodynamic quantities of the system. We obtained the order parameter, the associated magnetic susceptibility ($χ$) and the specific heat $(c)$ in order to characterize the universality class of the phase transition. Also, we use the finite size scaling method to obtain the critical temperature of the system and the …
The equilibrium phase behavior of microphase-forming systems is notoriously difficult to obtain because of the extended metastability of their modulated phases. In this paper we present a systematic simulation methodology for studying layered microphases and apply the approach to two prototypical lattice-based systems: the three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) and Ising-Coulomb (IC) models. The method involves thermodynamically integrating along a reversible path established between a reference system of free spins under an ordering field and the system of interest. The r…

The physics of critical phenomena in a many-body system far from thermal equilibrium is an interesting and important issue to be addressed both experimentally and theoretically. The trapped cold atoms have been actively used as a clean and versatile simulator for classical and quantum-mechanical systems, deepening understanding of the many-body physics behind. Here we review the nonlinear and collective dynamics in a periodically modulated magneto-optically trapped cold atoms. By temporally modulating the intensity of the trapping lasers with the controlled phases, one can realize two kinds of…
Using the density matrix formalism, we prove an existence theorem of the periodic steady-state for an arbitrary periodically-driven system. This state has the same period as the modulated external influence, and it is realized as an asymptotic solution ($t$$\to$$+\infty$) due to relaxation processes. The presented derivation simultaneously contains a simple computational algorithm non-using both Floquet and Fourier theories, i.e. our method automatically guarantees a full account of all frequency components. The description is accompanied by the examples demonstrating a simplicity and high eff…
We extend the stationary-state work fluctuation theorem to periodically modulated nonlinear systems. Such systems often have coexisting stable periodic states. We show that work fluctuations sharply increase near a kinetic phase transition where the state populations are close to each other. The work variance is proportional here to the reciprocal rate of interstate switching. We also show that the variance displays scaling with the distance to a bifurcation point and find the critical exponent for a saddle-node bifurcation.
We investigate the phase diagram of a spin-$1/2$ Ising model on a cubic lattice, with competing interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors along an axial direction, and fully connected spins on the sites of each perpendicular layer. The problem is formulated in terms of a set of noninteracting Ising chains in a position-dependent field. At low temperatures, as in the standard mean-feild version of the Axial-Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model, there are many distinct spatially commensurate phases that spring from a multiphase point of infinitely degenerate ground states. As …
The equilibrium phase behavior of microphase-forming substances and models is notoriously difficult to obtain because of the extended metastability of the modulated phases. We develop a simulation method based on thermodynamic integration that avoids this problem and with which we obtain the phase diagram of the canonical three-dimensional axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model. The equilibrium devil's staircase, magnetization, and susceptibility are obtained. The critical exponents confirm the XY nature of the disorder-modulated phase transition beyond the Lifshitz point. The results identif…
We present a theoretical study of the phase diagram of a frustrated Ising model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions and long-range (Coulombic) antiferromagnetic interactions. For nonzero frustration, long-range ferromagnetic order is forbidden, and the ground-state of the system consists of phases characterized by periodically modulated structures. At finite temperatures, the phase diagram is calculated within the mean-field approximation. Below the transition line that separates the disordered and the ordered phases, the frustration-temperature phase diagram displays an infinite …
We show that the rate of activated escape $W$ from a periodically modulated potential displays scaling behavior versus modulation amplitude $A$. For adiabatic modulation of an optically trapped Brownian particle, measurements yield $\ln W\propto (A_{\rm c} - A)^μ$ with $μ= 1.5$. The theory gives $μ=3/2$ in the adiabatic limit and predicts a crossover to $μ=2$ scaling as $A$ approaches the bifurcation point where the metastable state disappears.
We show that an atomic system in a periodically modulated optical trap displays an ideal mean-field symmetry-breaking transition. The symmetry is broken with respect to time translation by the modulation period. The transition is due to the interplay of the long-range interatomic interaction and nonequilibrium fluctuations. The observed critical dynamics, including anomalous fluctuations in the symmetry broken phase, are fully described by the proposed microscopic theory.
Classical particles driven through periodically modulated potential energy landscapes are predicted to follow a Devil's staircase hierarchy of commensurate trajectories depending on the orientation of the driving force. Recent experiments on colloidal spheres flowing through arrays of optical traps do indeed reveal such a hierarchy, but not with the predicted structure. The microscopic trajectories, moreover, appear to be random, with commensurability emerging only in a statistical sense. We introduce an idealized model for periodically modulated transport in the presence of randomness that capt…
Ising models with frustrated next-nearest-neighbor interactions present a rich morphology of modulated phases. These phases, however, assemble and relax slowly, which hinders their computational study. In two dimensions, strong fluctuations further hamper determining their equilibrium phase behavior from theoretical approximations. The exact numerical transfer matrix (TM) method, which bypasses these difficulties, can serve as a benchmark method once its own numerical challenges are surmounted. Building on our recent study [Hu and Charbonneau, Phys. Rev. B 103, 094441 (2021)], in which we eval…
In this paper we consider one-dimensional classical and quantum spin-1=2 quasiperiodic Ising chains, with two-valued nearest neighbor interaction modulated by a Fibonacci substitution sequence on two letters. In the quantum case, we investigate the energy spectrum of the Ising Hamiltonian, in presence of constant transverse magnetic field, by employing the techniques that were developed in our previous work. In the classical case, we investigate and prove analyticity of the free energy function when the magnetic field, together with interaction strength couplings, is modulated by the same Fibo…
