We study the mixed anomaly between the discrete chiral symmetry and general baryon-color-flavor (BCF) backgrounds in $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ flavors of Dirac fermions in representations ${\cal R}_c$ of $N$-ality $n_c$, formulated on non-spin manifolds. We show how to study these theories on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ by turning on general BCF fluxes consistent with the fermion transition functions. We consider several examples in detail and argue that matching the anomaly on non-spin manifolds places stronger constraints on the infrared physics, compared to the ones on spin manifolds (e.g.~$\mathbb{T}^4$). We also show how to consistently formulate various chiral gauge theories on non-spin manifolds.
We show that the phase structure of certain staggered fermion theories can be understood on the basis of exact anomalies. These anomalies arise when staggered fermions are coupled to gravity which can be accomplished by replacing them by discrete Kähler-Dirac fermions. We first show the existence of a perturbative anomaly in even dimensions which breaks an exact $U(1)$ symmetry of the massless theory down to $Z_4$. If we attempt to gauge this $Z_4$ symmetry we find a 't Hooft anomaly which can only be cancelled for multiples of two Kähler-Dirac fields. This result is consistent with the cancel…
We investigate a higher-group structure of massless axion electrodynamics in $(3+1)$ dimensions. By using the background gauging method, we show that the higher-form symmetries necessarily have a global semistrict 3-group (2-crossed module) structure, and exhibit 't Hooft anomalies of the 3-group. In particular, we find a cubic mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 0-form and 1-form symmetries, which is specific to the higher-group structure.
We study higher-form global symmetries and a higher-group structure of a low-energy limit of $(3+1)$-dimensional axion electrodynamics in a gapped phase described by a topological action. We argue that the higher-form symmetries should have a semi-strict 4-group (3-crossed module) structure by consistency conditions of couplings of the topological action to background gauge fields for the higher-form symmetries. We find possible 't Hooft anomalies for the 4-group global symmetry, and discuss physical consequences.

It is known that the 't Hooft anomalies of invertible global symmetries can be characterized by an invertible TQFT in one higher dimension. The analogous statement remains to be understood for non-invertible symmetries. In this note we discuss how the linking invariants in a non-invertible TQFT known as the Symmetry TFT (SymTFT) can be used as a diagnostic for 't Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries. When the non-invertible symmetry is non-intrinsically non-invertible, and hence the SymTFT is a Dijkgraaf-Witten model, the linking invariants can be computed explicitly. We illustrate thi…

We consider recent claims that supersymmetry is anomalous in the presence of a R-symmetry anomaly. We revisit arguments that such an anomaly in supersymmetry can be removed and write down an explicit counterterm that accomplishes it. Removal of the supersymmetry anomaly requires enlarging the corresponding current multiplet. As a consequence the Ward identities for other symmetries that are already anomalous acquire extra terms. This procedure can only be impeded when the choice of current multiplet is forced. We show how Wess-Zumino consistency conditions are modified when the anomaly is remo…
We study 't Hooft anomalies of symmetry-enriched rational conformal field theories (RCFT) in (1+1)d. Such anomalies determine whether a theory can be realized in a truly (1+1)d system with on-site symmetry, or on the edge of a (2+1)d symmetry-protected topological phase. RCFTs with the identical symmetry actions on their chiral algebras may have different 't Hooft anomalies due to additional symmetry charges on local primary operators. To compute the relative anomaly, we establish a precise correspondence between (1+1)d non-chiral RCFTs and (2+1)d doubled symmetry-enriched topological (SET) ph…
How many charged degrees of freedom are necessary to accommodate a certain amount of 't Hooft anomaly? Using the conformal bootstrap for the four-point function of flavor current multiplets, we show that in all (3+1)d superconformal field theories the 't Hooft anomaly of a continuous flavor symmetry is bounded from above by the 3/2 power of the current two-point function coefficient, which can be thought of as a measure for the amount of charged degrees of freedom. We check our bounds against free fields and SQCD in the conformal window.

Quantum field theories (QFT) in the presence of defects exhibit new types of anomalies which play an important role in constraining the defect dynamics and defect renormalization group (RG) flows. Here we study surface defects and their anomalies in conformal field theories (CFT) of general spacetime dimensions. When the defect is conformal, it is characterized by a conformal $b$-anomaly analogous to the $c$-anomaly of 2d CFTs. The $b$-theorem states that $b$ must monotonically decrease under defect RG flows and was proven by coupling to a spurious defect dilaton. We revisit the proof by deriv…
We discuss the geometric origin of discrete higher form symmetries of quantum field theories in terms of defect groups from geometric engineering in M-theory. The flux non-commutativity in M-theory gives rise to (mixed) 't Hooft anomalies for the defect group which constrains the corresponding global structures of the associated quantum fields. We analyze the example of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM gauge theory in four dimensions, and we reproduce the well-known classification of global structures from reading between its lines. We extend this analysis to the case of 7d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM theory, w…
A global symmetry of a quantum field theory is said to have an 't Hooft anomaly if it cannot be promoted to a local symmetry of a gauged theory. In this paper, we show that the anomaly is also an obstruction to defining symmetric boundary conditions. This applies to Lorentz symmetries with gravitational anomalies as well. For theories with perturbative anomalies, we demonstrate the obstruction by analyzing the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions and current Ward identities in the presence of a boundary. We then recast the problem in terms of symmetry defects and find the same conclusions for an…
We study the phase diagram of the $(1+1)$-dimensional Gross-Neveu model with both $g_x^2(\barψψ)^2$ and $g_y^2(\barψiγ_5ψ)^2$ interaction terms on a spatial lattice. The continuous chiral symmetry, which is present in the continuum model when $g_x^2=g_y^2$, has a mixed 't~Hooft anomaly with the charge conservation symmetry, which guarantees the existence of a massless mode. However, the same 't~Hooft anomaly also implies that the continuous chiral symmetry is broken explicitly in our lattice model. Nevertheless, from numerical matrix product state simulations we find that, for certain paramete…
