A global symmetry of a quantum field theory is said to have an 't Hooft anomaly if it cannot be promoted to a local symmetry of a gauged theory. In this paper, we show that the anomaly is also an obstruction to defining symmetric boundary conditions. This applies to Lorentz symmetries with gravitational anomalies as well. For theories with perturbative anomalies, we demonstrate the obstruction by analyzing the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions and current Ward identities in the presence of a boundary. We then recast the problem in terms of symmetry defects and find the same conclusions for anomalies of discrete and orientation-reversing global symmetries, up to the conjecture that global gravitational anomalies, which may not be associated with any diffeomorphism symmetry, also forbid the existence of boundary conditions. This conjecture holds for known gravitational anomalies in $D \le 3$ which allows us to conclude the obstruction result for $D \le 4$.
The usual condensed matter lattice theories do not include dynamical electromagnetic (EM) field and do not have higher symmetries naturally (unless we engineer fine-tuned toy models to realize higher symmetries). However, for gapped systems, (anomalous) higher symmetries can emerge from the usual condensed matter theories at low energies (usually in a spontaneously broken form). We pointed out that spontaneously broken emergent higher symmetries are nothing but a kind of topological orders. The emergent (anomalous) higher symmetries can be used to constrain possible phase transitions and possi…
In this paper, using 1+1D models as examples, we study symmetries and anomalous symmetries via multi-component partition functions obtained through symmetry twists, and their transformations under the mapping class group of spacetime. This point of view allows us to treat symmetries and anomalous symmetries as non-invertible gravitational anomalies (which are also described by multi-component partition functions, transforming covariantly under the mapping group transformations). This allows us to directly see how symmetry and anomalous symmetry constraint the low energy dynamics of the systems…
Using anomalous symmetries of the cubic string field theory vertex we derive set of relations between the coefficients of the tachyon condensate. They are in agreement with the results obtained from level truncation approximation.
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries can appear both in heterotic and type I string theories. In the heterotic case we find a single anomalous U(1), while in open string theories several such symmetries can appear. Nonetheless, there is a conjectured duality symmetry that might connect these two theories. We review the properties of anomalous gauge symmetries in various string theories as well as the status of this heterotic-type I/II duality. We also comment on the possible phenomenological applications of anomalous gauge symmetries in string theory.
We study the breaking of baryonic symmetries in the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence for D3 branes at Calabi-Yau three-fold singularities. This leads, for particular VEVs, to the emergence of non-anomalous baryonic symmetries during the renormalization group flow. We claim that these VEVs correspond to critical values of the B-field moduli in the dual supergravity backgrounds. We study in detail the C^3/Z_3 orbifold, the cone over F_0 and the C^3/Z_5 orbifold. For the first two examples, we study the dual supergravity backgrounds that correspond to the breaking of the emerging baryonic symmetries an…
The fermionic minimal models are a recently-introduced family of two-dimensional spin conformal field theories. We determine all of their conformal boundary states and potentially anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ global symmetries. The latter task hinges upon on a conjecture about $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ affine parities generalising an earlier result known to have an interpretation in terms of Fermat curves. Our results indicate a close connection between several properties of the models, including the matching of the sizes of the SPT classes of boundary states, the existence of anomalous $\mathbb{Z}_2$ sy…
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries in type II orientifold theories show some unexpected properties. In contrast to the heterotic case, the masses of the gauge bosons are in general of order of the string scale even in the absence of large Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. Despite this fact, the notion of heterotic-type II orientifold duality remains a useful concept, although this symmetry does not seem to hold in all cases considered. We analyse the status of this duality symmetry, clarify the properties of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in the orientifold picture and comment on the consequences for phenom…
We discuss constraints imposed by soft limits for effective field theories arising from symmetry breaking. In particular, we consider those associated with anomalous conformal symmetry as well as duality symmetries in supergravity. We verify these soft theorems for the dilaton effective action relevant for the a-theorem, as well as the one-loop effective action for N=4 supergravity. Using the universality of leading transcendental coefficients in the alpha' expansion of string theory amplitudes, we study the matrix elements of operator R^4 with half maximal supersymmetry. We construct the non-…
We analyze the general structure of soft scalar masses emerging in superstring models involving anomalous U(1) symmetries, with the aim of characterizing more systematically the circumstances under which they can happen to be flavor universal. We consider both heterotic orbifold and intersecting brane models, possibly with several anomalous and non-anomalous spontaneously broken U(1) symmetries. The hidden sector is assumed to consist of the universal dilaton, Kahler class and complex structure moduli, which are supposed to break supersymmetry, and a minimal set of Higgs fields which compensat…
Conformal low-spin anomalous currents and shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant formulation for such currents and shadow fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Gauge invariant differential constraints for anomalous currents and shadow fields and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for anomalous shadow fields are also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-poin…
We study boundary states for Dirac fermions in d=1+1 dimensions that preserve Abelian chiral symmetries, meaning that the left- and right-moving fermions carry different charges. We derive simple expressions, in terms of the fermion charge assignments, for the boundary central charge and for the ground state degeneracy of the system when two different boundary conditions are imposed at either end of an interval. We show that all such boundary states fall into one of two classes, related to SPT phases supported by (-1)^F, which are characterised by the existence of an unpaired Majorana zero mod…

4d gauge theories with massless fermions typically have axial U(1) transformations that suffer from the ABJ anomaly. One can modify the theory of interest by adding more fields in a way that restores the axial symmetry, and use it to derive rigorous 't-Hooft anomaly matching conditions. These conditions are not valid for the original theory of interest, but for the modified theory. We show that the modification can be done in a specific way that allows us to relate the dynamics of the modified theory to the dynamics of the original theory. In this way, the anomaly matching conditions of the mo…
We consider a general system with weakly broken time and translation symmetries. We assume the system also possesses a $U(1)$ symmetry which is not only weakly broken, but is anomalous. We use the second order chiral quasi-hydrodynamics to compute the magneto-conductivities in the system in the presence of a weak magnetic field. Analogous to electrical and thermoelectric conductivities, it turns out that the thermal conductivity is identified with a coefficient which depends on the mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. By applying our general formulas to a free system of Weyl fermions at low temp…
``Anomalous'' U(1) gauge symmetry with Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism is discussed in the orbifold construction of four-dimensional heterotic string models. Some conditions are given as criteria to have ``anomalous'' U(1) in orbifold string models. In particular, ``anomalous'' U(1) is absent if the massless twisted matter has no mixing between visible and hidden sectors or if a certain type of discrete symmetries are found. We then give a general procedure for classifying orbifold models with ``anomalous'' U(1) and for identifying the ``anomalous'' U(1) basis. We illustrate our p…
In this paper we first discuss the analysis regarding the role of Lorentz symmetry in the perturbative non-gravitational anomalies for a family of fermions, which has been recently performed in arXiv:0809.0184. The theory is assumed to be translational invariant, power-counting renormalizable and based on a local action, but is allowed to have general Lorentz violating operators, including those that break CPT. The main result is that Lorentz symmetry does not participate in the clash of symmetries that leads to the anomalies. Moreover, here we provide a simple "semiclassical" argument that sh…
Usually, a left-moving fermion in d=1+1 dimensions reflects off a boundary to become a right-moving fermion. This means that, while overall fermion parity $(-1)^F$ is conserved, chiral fermion parity for left- and right-movers individually is not. Remarkably, there are boundary conditions that do preserve chiral fermion parity, but only when the number of Majorana fermions is a multiple of 8. In this paper we classify all such boundary states for $2N$ Majorana fermions when a $U(1)^N$ symmetry is also preserved. The fact that chiral-parity-preserving boundary conditions only exist when $2N$ is…
To obtain natural inflation with large tensor-to-scalar ratio in string framework, we need a special moduli stabilization mechanism which can separate the masses of real and imaginary components of Kähler moduli at different scales, and achieve a trans-Planckian axion decay constant from sub-Planckian axion decay constants. In this work, we stabilize the matter fields by F-terms and the real components of Kähler moduli by D-terms of two anomalous $U(1)_X\times U(1)_A$ symmetries strongly at high scales, while the corresponding axions remain light due to their independence on the Fayet-Iliopoul…
We study several exotic systems, including the X-cube model, on a flat three-torus with a twist in the $xy$-plane. The ground state degeneracy turns out to be a sensitive function of various geometrical parameters. Starting from a lattice, depending on how we take the continuum limit, we find different values of the ground state degeneracy. Yet, there is a natural continuum limit with a well-defined (though infinite) value of that degeneracy. We also uncover a surprising global symmetry in $2+1$ and $3+1$ dimensional systems. It originates from the underlying subsystem symmetry, but the way it…
We derive, in path integral approach, the (anomalous) master Ward identity associated with an infinite set of nonlocal conservation laws in two-dimensional principal chiral models
This review is dedicated to some modern applications of the remarkable paper written in 1918 by E. Noether. On a single paper, Noether discovered the crucial relation between symmetries and conserved charges as well as the impact of gauge symmetries on the equations of motion. Almost a century has gone since the publication of this work and its applications have permeated modern physics. Our focus will be on some examples that have appeared recently in the literature. This review is aim at students, not researchers. The main three topics discussed are (i) global symmetries and conserved charge…
Motivated by the intriguing discrepancies in $b\to s \ell\ell$ transitions, the fermion mass problem, and a desire to preserve the accidental symmetries of the Standard Model (SM), we extend the SM by an anomalous $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry where $X=Y_3+a(L_μ-L_τ)/6$. The heavy $Z^\prime$ boson associated with spontaneously breaking $U(1)_X$ at the TeV scale mediates the $b\to s\ell\ell$ anomalies via $\mathcal{O}^μ_9 \sim\frac{1}{Λ^2}(\bar{s}γ_ρP_L b)(\barμ γ^ρμ)$. We show that this model, which features mixed gauge anomalies involving $U(1)_X$ and hypercharge, can be made anomaly-free for any $…
The reparametrization symmetries of Witten's vertex in ordinary or vacuum string field theories can be used to extract useful information about classical solutions of the equations of motion corresponding to D-branes. It follows, that the vacuum string field theory in general has to be regularized. For the regularization recently considered by Gaiotto et al., we show that the identities we derive, are so constraining, that among all surface states they uniquely select the simplest butterfly projector discovered numerically by those authors. The reparametrization symmetries are also used to giv…
In two-dimensional conformal field theory, we analyze conformally invariant boundary conditions which break part of the bulk symmetries. When the subalgebra that is preserved by the boundary conditions is the fixed algebra under the action of a finite group G, orbifold techniques can be used to determine the structure of the space of such boundary conditions. We present explicit results for the case when G is abelian. In particular, we construct a classifying algebra which controls these symmetry breaking boundary conditions in the same way in which the fusion algebra governs the boundary cond…
Recently it is found that Weyl anomaly leads to novel anomalous currents in the spacetime with a boundary. However, the anomalous current is suppressed by the mass of charge carriers and the distance to the boundary, which makes it difficult to be measured. In this paper, we explore the possible mechanisms for the enhancement of anomalous currents. Interestingly, we find that the anomalous current can be significantly enhanced by the high temperature, which makes easier the experimental detection. For free theories, the anomalous current is proportional to the temperature in the high temperatu…
The field equations of the Chern-Simons theory quantized in the axial gauge are shown to be completely determined by supersymmetry Ward identities which express the invariance of the theory under the topological supersymmetry of Delduc, Gieres and Sorella together with the usual Slavnov identity without requiring any action principle.
We discuss quantum many-body systems with lattice translation and discrete onsite symmetries. We point out that, under a boundary condition twisted by a symmetry operation, there is an exact degeneracy of ground states if the unit cell forms a projective representation of the onsite discrete symmetry. Based on the quantum transfer matrix formalism, we show that, if the system is gapped, the ground-state degeneracy under the twisted boundary condition also implies a ground-state (quasi-)degeneracy under the periodic boundary conditions. This gives a compelling evidence for the recently proposed…
A framework associating quantum cosmological boundary conditions to minisuperspace hidden symmetries has been introduced in \cite{7}. The scope of the application was, notwithstanding the novelty, restrictive because it lacked a discussion involving realistic matter fields. Therefore, in the herein letter, we extend the framework scope to encompass elements from a scalar-tensor theory in the presence of a cosmological constant. More precisely, it is shown that hidden minisuperspace symmetries present in a pre-big bang model suggest a process from which boundary conditions can be selected.
We compute scattering amplitudes involving both R-R and NS-NS fields in the presence of a D-brane or orientifold plane. These provide direct evidence for the anomalous couplings in the D-brane and orientifold actions. The D9-brane and O9-plane are found to couple to the first Pontrjagin class with the expected relative strength.
The high temperature asymptotics of the Helmholtz free energy of electromagnetic field subjected to boundary conditions with spherical and cylindrical symmetries are constructed by making use of a general expansion in terms of heat kernel coefficients and the related determinant. For this, some new heat kernel coefficients and determinants had to be calculated for the boundary conditions under consideration. The obtained results reproduce all the asymptotics derived by other methods in the problems at hand and involve a few new terms in the high temperature expansions. An obvious merit of this…
In this note, we discuss the consistency conditions which a discrete $Z_N$ symmetry should satisfy in order that it is not violated by gauge and gravitational instantons. As examples, we enlist all the $Z_N$ ${\cal R}$-symmetries as well as non-${\cal R}$ $Z_N$ symmetries (N=2,3,4) in the minimally supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) that are free from gauge and gravitational anomalies. We show that there exists non-anomalous discrete symmetries that forbid Baryon number violation up to dimension 6 level (in superspace). We also observe that there exists no non-anomalous $Z_3$ ${\cal R}$-symm…
In this paper, we revisit the null boundary gravitational charge in the Newman-Penrose formalism with special emphasis on the charges from local Lorentz transformations. We find that there is one more charge derived from the local Lorentz transformation and the new charge is purely from the Holst term. This reveals a remarkable fact that trivial terms which do not change classical equations of motion can not only affect the boundary degrees of freedom through their contributions to the boundary charges but also have their own rights to create new boundary degrees of freedom.
In this paper, we present solutions to the fermion mass hierarchy problem in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard theory augmented by an anomalous family-dependent U(1)_X symmetry. The latter is spontaneously broken by non-zero vevs of a pair of singlet fields whose magnitude is determined through the D- and F-flatness conditions of the superpotential. We derive the general solutions to the anomaly cancellation conditions and show that they allow numerous choices for the U(1)_X fermion charges which give several fermion mass textures in agreement with the observed fermion mass hi…
We study the boundary limit of the bulk isometries of AdS x S. The superconformal symmetry is realized on the coordinates of the AdS boundary, the fermionic superspace coordinates, and the harmonics on the sphere. We show how these may be related to the coordinates of an off-shell harmonic superspace of SCFT living on the boundary. In the special case of d=4, N=2 super Yang-Mills theory, a truncation of the N=4 SYM dual to Type IIB string theory compactified on AdS_5 x S^5, we identify the bosonic space SU(2)/U(1) of the N=2 harmonic superspace (known before as auxiliary) with the S^2 submanif…
Relationships between gauge, conformal and discrete symmetries in particle physics are analysed. We study also the effect of the electroweak mixing on the cancellation of SU(2) anomalous actions. It is shown that the relation theta_{W} = 2(theta_{12}+theta_{23}+theta_{13}) between the Weinberg angle and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angles should be satisfied and this effect is completely defined by the mixing of Dirac fermions. We compare two mechanisms of the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry, discuss the renormalizability of theories, and argue for the existence of the Majorana fermion…
We study Kac-Moody asymptotic symmetries and memory effects in $\text{AdS}_4^{\text{Poincare}}$ gauge theory and (when accompanied by 4D gravity) in its holographic CFT$_3$ dual. While such infinite-dimensional symmetries are absent in standard asymptotic analyses of $\text{AdS}_4$, we show how they arise with alternate AdS boundary conditions. In the 3D holographic description, these alternate boundary conditions correspond to a modified $\widetilde{\text{CFT}}_3$ obtained by Chern-Simons gauging of the CFT$_3$ dual defined by standard boundary conditions, so that Kac-Moody symmetries then fo…
There are several instances where quantum anomalies of continuous and discrete classical symmetries play an important role in fundamental physics. Examples come from chiral anomalies in the Standard Model of fundamental interactions and gravitational anomalies in string theories. Their generic origin is the fact that classical symmetries may not preserve the domains of quantum operators like the Hamiltonian. In this work, we show by simple examples that anomalous symmetries can often be implemented at the expense of working with mixed states having non-zero entropies. In particular there is th…
The set of solutions to the AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions is known to be a family of metrics labeled by two arbitrary periodic functions, respectively left and right-moving. It turns out that there exists an appropriate presymplectic form which vanishes on-shell. This promotes this set of metrics to a phase space in which the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic symmetries become symplectic symmetries in the bulk of spacetime. Moreover, any element in the phase space admits two global Killing vectors. We show that the conserved charges associated with these Killing vect…
Axions were first introduced in connection with chiral symmetry but are now being looked for mainly as dark matter. In this paper we introduce a nonabelian analogue of axions which can also be potential candidates for dark matter. Their nonabelian symmetries, which are generalizations of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, are interesting in their own right. Detailed analysis, using fermion measure and zeta function approaches shows that these symmetries are not anomalous.
Recently, it is found that when an external magnetic field parallel to the boundary is applied, Weyl anomaly gives rises to a new anomalous current transport in the vicinity of the boundary. At the leading order of closeness from the boundary, the current is determined universally by the central charge of the theory. In this paper, we give a holographic proof for the existence and universality for this transport phenomena. We show that the current is independent of boundary conditions in four dimensions while it depends on boundary conditions in other dimensions. We also study the backreaction…
It is shown how the BRST quantization can be applied to a gauge invariant sector of theories with anomalously broken symmetries. This result is used to show that shifting the anomalies to a classically trivial sector of fields (Wess-Zumino mechanism) makes it possible to quantize the physical sector using a standard BRST procedure, as for a non anomalous theory. The trivial sector plays the role of a topological sector if the system is quantized without shifting the anomalies.
We study the boundary states of (p', p) rational conformal field theories having a W symmetry of the type A(r) using the multi-component free-field formalism. The classification of primary fields for these models given in the literature is shown to be incomplete; we give the correct classification by demanding modular covariance and show that the resulting modular S matrix satisfies all the necessary conditions. Basis states satisfying the boundary conditions are found in the form of coherent states and as expected we find that W violating states can be found for all these models. We construct…
Due to the Weyl anomaly, an axial vector field produces novel anomalous chiral currents in spacetime with boundaries. Remarkably, the chiral current is not invariant under the gauge transformation of axial vector fields. As a result, more potential terms appear, and the chiral current becomes larger than the electric current near the boundary. This paper investigates the anomalous chiral current in AdS/BCFT. We find that the minimal holographic model of the axial vector field cannot produce the expected chiral current. To resolve this problem, we propose adding a suitable boundary action. Furt…
Quantum anomalies are one of the subtlest properties of relativistic field theories. They give rise to non-dissipative transport coefficients in the hydrodynamic expansion. In particular a magnetic field can induce an anomalous current via the chiral magnetic effect. In this work we explore the possibility that anomalies can induce a chiral magnetic effect in non-anomalous currents as well. This effect is implemented through an explicit breaking of the symmetries.
For every ADE Dynkin diagram, we give a realization, in terms of usual fusion algebras (graph algebras), of the algebra of quantum symmetries described by the associated Ocneanu graph. We give explicitly, in each case, the list of the corresponding twisted partition functions
