In this paper, we study the impact of stealthy attacks on the Cyber-Physical System (CPS) modeled as a stochastic linear system. An attack is characterised by a malicious injection into the system through input, output or both, and it is called stealthy (resp.~strictly stealthy) if it produces bounded changes (resp.~no changes) in the detection residue. Correspondingly, a CPS is called vulnerable (resp.~strictly vulnerable) if it can be destabilized by a stealthy attack (resp.~strictly stealthy attack). We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the vulnerability and strictly vulnerability. For the invulnerable case, we also provide a performance bound for the difference between healthy and attacked system. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.
This article provides a tool for analyzing mechanisms that aim to achieve resilience against stealthy, or undetectable, attacks on cyber-physical systems (CPSs). We consider attackers who are able to corrupt all of the inputs and outputs of the system. To counter such attackers, a response scheme must be implemented that keeps the attacker from corrupting the inputs and outputs of the system for certain periods of time. To aid in the design of such a response scheme, our tool provides sufficient lengths for these periods of time in order to ensure safety with a particular probability. We provi…
Designing resilient control strategies for mitigating stealthy attacks is a crucial task in emerging cyber-physical systems. In the design of anomaly detectors, it is common to assume Gaussian noise models to maintain tractability; however, this assumption can lead the actual false alarm rate to be significantly higher than expected. We propose a distributionally robust anomaly detector for noise distributions in moment-based ambiguity sets. We design a detection threshold that guarantees that the actual false alarm rate is upper bounded by the desired one by using generalized Chebyshev inequa…
This draft addresses issues of detecting stealthy integrity cyber-attacks on automatic control systems in the unified control and detection framework. A general form of integrity cyber-attacks that cannot be detected using the well-established observer-based technique is first introduced as kernel attacks. The well-known replay, zero dynamics and covert attacks are special forms of the kernel attacks. Existence conditions for the kernel attacks are presented. It is demonstrated, in the unified framework of control and detection, that all kernel attacks can be structurally detected when not onl…
This paper addresses the issue of data injection attacks on control systems. We consider attacks which aim at maximizing system disruption while staying undetected in the finite horizon. The maximum possible disruption caused by such attacks is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem whose dual problem is a convex semi-definite program. We show that the duality gap is zero using S-lemma. To determine the optimal attack vector, we formulate a soft-constrained optimization problem using the Lagrangian dual function. The framework of dynamic programming for indefinite cost functions is us…
Cyber Physical Systems (cps) are deployed in many mission-critical settings, such as medical devices, autonomous vehicular systems and aircraft control management systems. As more and more CPS adopt Deep Neural Networks (Deep Neural Network (dnns), these systems can be vulnerable to attacks. . Prior work has demonstrated the susceptibility of CPS to False Data Injection Attacks (False Data Injection Attacks (fdias), which can cause significant damage. We identify a new category of attacks on these systems. In this paper, we demonstrate that DNN based CPS are also subject to these attacks. Thes…
Stealthy false data injection attacks on cyber-physical systems (CPSs) introduce erroneous measurement information to on-board sensors with the purpose to degrade system performance. An intelligent attacker is able to leverage knowledge of the system model and noise characteristics to alter sensor measurements while remaining undetected. To achieve this objective, the stealthy attack sequence is designed such that the detector performs similarly in the attacked and attack-free cases. Consequently, an attacker that wants to remain hidden will leave behind traces of inconsistent behavior, contra…
Security is one of the biggest concern in power system operation. Recently, the emerging cyber security threats to operational functions of power systems arouse high public attention, and cybersecurity vulnerability thus become an emerging topic to evaluate compromised operational performance under cyber attack. In this paper, vulnerability of cyber security of load frequency control (LFC) system, which is the key component in energy manage system (EMS), is assessed by exploiting the system response to attacks on LFC variables/parameters. Two types of attacks: 1) injection attack and 2) scale …
In this work, we study vulnerability of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to stealthy attacks on perception-based control. To guide our analysis, we consider two specific missions: ($i$) ground vehicle tracking (GVT), and ($ii$) vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) of a quadcopter on a moving ground vehicle. Specifically, we introduce a method to consistently attack both the sensors measurements and camera images over time, in order to cause control performance degradation (e.g., by failing the mission) while remaining stealthy (i.e., undetected by the deployed anomaly detector). Unlike existing…
In this work, we focus on analyzing vulnerability of nonlinear dynamical control systems to stealthy sensor attacks. We start by defining the notion of stealthy attacks in the most general form by leveraging Neyman-Pearson lemma; specifically, an attack is considered to be stealthy if it is stealthy from (i.e., undetected by) any intrusion detector -- i.e., the probability of the detection is not better than a random guess. We then provide a sufficient condition under which a nonlinear control system is vulnerable to stealthy attacks, in terms of moving the system to an unsafe region due to th…
Owing to the decreasing costs of distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as decarbonization policies, power systems are undergoing a modernization process. The large deployment of DERs together with internet of things (IoT) devices provide a platform for peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading in active distribution networks. However, P2P energy trading with IoT devices have driven the grid more vulnerable to cyber-physical threats. To this end, in this paper, a resilience-oriented P2P energy exchange model is developed considering three phase unbalanced distribution systems. In addition, variou…
With improvement in smart grids through two-way communication, demand response (DR) has gained significant attention due to the inherent flexibility provided by shifting non-critical loads from peak periods to off-peak periods, which can greatly improve grid reliability and reduce cost of energy. Operators utilize DR to enhance operational flexibility and alleviate network congestion. However, the intelligent two-way communication is susceptible to cyber-attacks. This paper studies the benefits of DR in security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED) and then the vulnerability of the system to l…
Power systems often rely on natural gas pipeline networks to supply fuel for gas-fired generation. Market inefficiencies and a lack of formal coordination between the wholesale power and gas delivery infrastructures may magnify the broader impact of a cyber-attack on a natural gas pipeline. In this study we present a model that can be used to quantify the impact of cyber-attacks on electricity and gas delivery operations. We model activation of cyber-attack vectors that attempt to gain access to pipeline gas compressor controls using a continuous-time Markov chain over a state space based on t…

Cyber attack vulnerabilities from various types and their impacts are calculated for intelligent signals and cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) applications based on the selected performance measures. Numerical examples are given that show impact of vulnerabilities in terms of average intersection queue lengths, number of stops, average speed, and delays. At a sign…

This work focuses on the use of deep learning for vulnerability analysis of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Specifically, we consider a control architecture widely used in CPS (e.g., robotics), where the low-level control is based on e.g., the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and an anomaly detector. To facilitate analyzing the impact potential sensing attacks could have, our objective is to develop learning-enabled attack generators capable of designing stealthy attacks that maximally degrade system operation. We show how such problem can be cast within a learning-based grey-box framework where par…
As one of the largest and most complex systems on earth, power grid (PG) operation and control have stepped forward as a compound analysis on both physical and cyber layers which makes it vulnerable to assaults from economic and security considerations. A new type of attack, namely as combined data Integrity-Availability attack, has been recently proposed, where the attackers can simultaneously manipulate and blind some measurements on SCADA system to mislead the control operation and keep stealthy. Compared with traditional FDIAs, this combined attack can further complicate and vitiate the mo…
We study the security of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in the context of the supervisory control layer. Specifically, we propose a general model of a CPS attacker in the framework of discrete event systems and investigate the problem of synthesizing an attack strategy for a given feedback control system. Our model captures a class of deception attacks, where the attacker has the ability to hijack a subset of sensor readings and mislead the supervisor, with the goal of inducing the system into an undesirable state. We utilize a game-like discrete transition structure, called Insertion-Deletion A…
This paper presents the first demonstration of using an active mechanism to defend renewable-rich microgrids against cyber attacks. Cyber vulnerability of the renewable-rich microgrids is identified. The defense mechanism based on dynamic watermarking is proposed for detecting cyber anomalies in microgrids. The proposed mechanism is easily implementable and it has theoretically provable performance in term of detecting cyber attacks. The effectiveness of the proposed mechanism is tested and validated in a renewable-rich microgrid.
As one of the most sophisticated attacks against power grids, coordinated cyber-physical attacks (CCPAs) damage the power grid's physical infrastructure and use a simultaneous cyber attack to mask its effect. This work proposes a novel approach to detect such attacks and identify the location of the line outages (due to the physical attack). The proposed approach consists of three parts. Firstly, moving target defense (MTD) is applied to expose the physical attack by actively perturbing transmission line reactance via distributed flexible AC transmission system (D-FACTS) devices. MTD invalidat…
Cyber-physical systems are becoming core of the most modern systems consisting control, data sharing and real-time monitoring. While centralized control technique has been implemented in the past, recent innovation in distributed control schemes makes it attractive due to various reasons. One of them is the use of state-of-the-art communication protocols that makes the system more robust toward extreme conditions and ensures observability. Thus, as an application of cyber-physical systems, distributed control architectures are prone to various cyber-vulnerability which makes cybersecurity rese…
Malicious attacks on modern autonomous cyber-physical systems (CPSs) can leverage information about the system dynamics and noise characteristics to hide while hijacking the system toward undesired states. Given attacks attempting to hide within the system noise profile to remain undetected, an attacker with the intent to hijack a system will alter sensor measurements, contradicting with what is expected by the system's model. To deal with this problem, in this paper we present a framework to detect non-randomness in sensor measurements on CPSs under the effect of sensor attacks. Specifically,…
Stealthy false data injection attacks on cyber-physical systems introduce erroneous measurements onto sensors with the intent to degrade system performance. An intelligent attacker can design stealthy attacks with knowledge of the system model and noise characteristics to evade detection from state-of-the-art fault detectors by remaining within detection thresholds. However, during these hidden attacks, an attacker with the intention of hijacking a system will leave traces of non-random behavior that contradict with the expectation of the system model. Given these premises, in this paper we pr…
