An abelian threefold $A_{/{\mathbb Q}}$ of prime conductor $N$ is favorable if its 2-division field $F$ is an ${\mathcal S}_7$-extension over ${\mathbb Q}$ with ramification index 7 over ${\mathbb Q}_2$. Let $A$ be favorable and let $B$ be a semistable abelian variety of dimension $3d$ and conductor $N^d$ with $B[2]$ filtered by copies of $A[2]$. We give a sufficient and computable class field theoretic criterion on $F$ to guarantee that $B$ is isogenous to $A^d$.

Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathop{\textrm{char}} k \neq 2$. Assume that the Weierstrass points of $C$ are $K$-rational. Let $S = \mathop{\textrm{Spec}} R$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $\mathcal{X}$ and let $ν(Δ)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S) \leq ν(Δ)$. As a …
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathrm{char}\ k > 2g+1$. Let $S = \mathrm{Spec}\ R$. Let $X$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathrm{Art}\ (C/K)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $X$ and let $ν(Δ_C)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathrm{Art}\ (C/K) \leq ν(Δ_C)$. The key ingredients are a combinatorial refinement of the discriminant introduced in this paper (called the metric tree) and a recent…
In this paper, we use a series of targeted Hunter searches to prove that the minimal prime conductor of an even icosahedral Galois representation is 1951. In addition, we give a complete list of all even icosahedral Galois representations of prime conductor less than 10,000.
The aim of this paper is to give upper bounds for the Euclidean minima of abelian fields of odd prime conductor. In particular, these bounds imply Minkowski's conjecture for totally real number fields of conductor p^r, where p is an odd prime and r is at least 2.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we introduce the conductor of a quadratic polynomial, and give an effective characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with odd prime power conductor.
Let g >= 1 and let Q be a monic, squarefree polynomial of degree 2g + 1 in Z[x]. For an odd prime p not dividing the discriminant of Q, let Z_p(T) denote the zeta function of the hyperelliptic curve of genus g over the finite field F_p obtained by reducing the coefficients of the equation y^2 = Q(x) modulo p. We present an explicit deterministic algorithm that given as input Q and a positive integer N, computes Z_p(T) simultaneously for all such primes p < N, whose average complexity per prime is polynomial in g, log N, and the number of bits required to represent Q.
Surprisingly, the class numbers of cyclotomic fields have only been determined for fields of small conductor, e.g. for prime conductors up to 67, due to the problem of finding the "plus part," i.e. the class number of the maximal real subfield. Our results have improved the situation. We prove that the plus part of the class number is 1 for prime conductors between 71 and 151. Also, under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we determine the class number for prime conductors between 167 and 241. This technique generalizes to any totally real field of moderately large discrimin…
Let $K$ be a number field, and $g \geq 2$ a positive integer. We define $c_K(g)$ as the smallest integer $n$ such that there exist infinitely many $\overline{K}$-isomorphism classes of genus $g$ hyperelliptic curves $C/K$ with all Weierstrass points in $K$ having potentially good reduction outside $n$ primes in $K$. We show that $c_K(g) > π_{K, \textrm{odd}}(2g) + 1$, where $π_{K, \textrm{odd}}(n)$ denotes the number of odd primes in $K$ with norm no greater than $n$, as well as present a summary of various conditional and unconditional results on upper bounds for $c_K(g)$.
We find all elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have a rational point of order $N$, $N\ge 4$, and whose conductor is of the form $p^aq^b$, where p, q are two distinct primes, a, b are two positive integers. In particular, we prove that Szpiro's conjecture holds for these elliptic curves.
We present an algorithm that computes the Hasse-Witt matrix of given hyperelliptic curve over Q at all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N. It is simpler and faster than the previous algorithm developed by the authors.
Let $f(x)$ be a nonconstant polynomial with integer coefficients and nonzero discriminant. We study the distribution modulo primes of the set of squarefree integers $d$ such that the curve $dy^2=f(x)$ has a nontrivial rational or integral point.
The main result of this paper is to extend from $\Q$ to each of the nine imaginary quadratic fields of class number one a result of Serre (1987) and Mestre-Oesterlé (1989), namely that if $E$ is an elliptic curve of prime conductor then either $E$ or a $2$-, $3$- or $5$-isogenous curve has prime discriminant. For four of the nine fields, the theorem holds with no change, while for the remaining five fields the discriminant of a curve with prime conductor is either prime or the square of a prime. The proof is conditional in two ways: first that the curves are modular, so are associated to suita…
In this paper we show how to explicitly write down equations of hyperelliptic curves over Q such that for all odd primes l the image of the mod l Galois representation is the general symplectic group. The proof relies on understanding the action of inertia groups on the l-torsion of the Jacobian, including at primes where the Jacobian has non-semistable reduction. We also give a framework for systematically dealing with primitivity of symplectic mod l Galois representations. The main result of the paper is the following. Suppose n=2g+2 is an even integer that can be written as a sum of two pri…
In 1995, Ehud de Shalit proved an analogue of a conjecture of Mazur--Tate for the modular Jacobian $J_0(p)$. His main result was valid away from the Eisenstein primes. We complete the work of de Shalit by including the Eisenstein primes, and give some applications such as an elementary combinatorial identity involving discrete logarithms of difference of supersingular $j$-invariants. An important tool is our recent work on the so called "generalized cuspidal $1$-motive".
We show that torsion points of certain orders are not on a theta divisor in the Jacobian variety of a hyperelliptic curve given by the equation $y^2=x^{2g+1}+x$ with $g \geq 2$. The proof employs a method of Anderson who proved an analogous result for a cyclic quotient of a Fermat curve of prime degree.
We introduce the notion of isolated genus two curves. As there is no known efficient algorithm to explicitly construct isogenies between two genus two curves with large conductor gap, the discrete log problem (DLP) cannot be efficiently carried over from an isolated curve to a large set of isogenous curves. Thus isolated genus two curves might be more secure for DLP based hyperelliptic curve cryptography. We establish results on explicit expressions for the index of an endomorphism ring in the maximal CM order, and give conditions under which the index is a prime number or an almost prime numb…
In this paper we extend the hybrid Euler-Hadamard product model for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to irreducible polynomials over function fields. We also establish an asymptotic formula for the first twisted moment in this family of L-functions and then we provide further evidence for the conjectural asymptotic formulas for its moments.
We compute the second moment in the family of quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions with prime conductors over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ when the degree of the discriminant goes to infinity, obtaining one of the lower order terms. We also obtain an asymptotic formula with the leading order term for the mean value of the derivatives of $L$-functions associated to quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ by monic irreducible polynomials, which allows us to show that there exists a monic irreducible polynomial such that the analytic rank of the corresponding twisted elliptic curve is…
We present an efficient algorithm to compute the Hasse-Witt matrix of a hyperelliptic curve C/Q modulo all primes of good reduction up to a given bound N, based on the average polynomial-time algorithm recently introduced by Harvey. An implementation for hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 and 3 is more than an order of magnitude faster than alternative methods for N = 2^26.
We prove that more than nine percent of the central values $L(\frac{1}{2},χ_p)$ are non-zero, where $p\equiv 1 \pmod{8}$ ranges over primes and $χ_p$ is the real primitive Dirichlet character of conductor $p$. Previously, it was not known whether a positive proportion of these central values are non-zero. As a by-product, we obtain the order of magnitude of the second moment of $L(\frac{1}{2},χ_p)$, and conditionally we obtain the order of magnitude of the third moment. Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that our lower bound for the second moment is asymptotically sharp.
We compute the $L$-functions of a large class of algebraic curves, and verify the expected functional equation numerically. Our computations are based on our previous results on stable reduction to calculate the local $L$-factor and the conductor exponent at the primes of bad reduction. Most of our examples are hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 2$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which have semistable reduction at every prime $p$. We also treat a few more general examples of superelliptic curves.
In this note we study numbers which occur as conductors of elliptic curves over Q. We show, by constructing families of elliptic curves with quadratic discriminant and invoking a theorem of Iwaniec, that this set contains infinitely many almost primes. We show, assuming a strong version of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics, that the set of prime conductors has an explicitly bounded density in the set of primes. Studying the Cremona and Stein-Watkins databases of elliptic curves we conjecture that the set of conductors should be of density zero in the set of natural numbers and that the set of prime…
The class numbers $h^{+}$ of the real cyclotomic fields are very hard to compute. Methods based on discriminant bounds become useless as the conductor of the field grows and methods employing Leopoldt's decomposition of the class number become hard to use when the field extension is not cyclic of prime power. This is why other methods have been developed which approach the problem from different angles. In this paper we extend one of these methods that was designed for real cyclotomic fields of prime conductor, and we make it applicable to real cyclotomic fields of conductor equal to the produ…
Let C be a hyperelliptic curve of good reduction defined over a discrete valuation field K with algebraically closed residue field k. Assume moreover that char k \ne 2. Given d \in K^*\K^*2, we introduce an explicit description of the minimal regular model of the quadratic twist of C by d. As an application, we show that if C/Q is a nonsingular hyperelliptic curve given by y^2 = f(x) with f an irreducible polynomial, there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C which are not everywhere locally soluble.
Let C/Q be a curve of genus three, given as a double cover of a plane conic. Such a curve is hyperelliptic over the algebraic closure of Q, but may not have a hyperelliptic model of the usual form over Q. We describe an algorithm that computes the local zeta functions of C at all odd primes of good reduction up to a prescribed bound N. The algorithm relies on an adaptation of the "accumulating remainder tree" to matrices with entries in a quadratic field. We report on an implementation, and compare its performance to previous algorithms for the ordinary hyperelliptic case.
In this paper, we obtain bounds for the Mordell-Weil ranks over cyclotomic extensions of a wide range of abelian varieties defined over a number field $F$ whose primes above $p$ are totally ramified over $F/\mathbb{Q}$. We assume that the abelian varieties may have good non-ordinary reduction at those primes. Our work is a generalization of \cite{Kim}, in which the second author generalized Perrin-Riou's Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with supersingular reduction (\cite{Perrin-Riou}) to elliptic curves defined over the above-mentioned number field $F$. On top of non-ordin…
In this article we prove an analogue of a theorem of Lachaud, Ritzenthaler, and Zykin, which allows us to connect invariants of binary oc-tics to Siegel modular forms of genus 3. We use this connection to show that certain modular functions, when restricted to the hyperelliptic locus, assume values whose denominators are products of powers of primes of bad reduction for the associated hyperelliptic curves. We illustrate our theorem with explicit computations. This work is motivated by the study of the value of these modular functions at CM points of the Siegel upper-half space, which, if their…
Inspired by experimental data, this paper investigates which isogeny classes of abelian varieties defined over a finite field of odd characteristic contain the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve. We provide a necessary condition by demonstrating that the Weil polynomial of a hyperelliptic Jacobian must have a particular form modulo 2. For fixed ${g\geq1}$, the proportion of isogeny classes of $g$ dimensional abelian varieties defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ which fail this condition is $1 - Q(2g + 2)/2^g$ as $q\to\infty$ ranges over odd prime powers, where $Q(n)$ denotes the number of partitions of…
In this article we extend work of Shanks and Washington on cyclic extensions, and elliptic curves associated to the simplest cubic fields. In particular, we give families of examples of hyperelliptic curves $C: y^2=f(x)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with $f(x)$ of degree $p$, where $p$ is a Sophie Germain prime, such that the rank of the Mordell--Weil group of the jacobian $J/\mathbb{Q}$ of $C$ is bounded by the genus of $C$ and the $2$-rank of the class group of the (cyclic) field defined by $f(x)$, and exhibit examples where this bound is sharp.
For a prime number $p$ we study the zeros modulo $p$ of divisor polynomials of rational elliptic curves $E$ of conductor $p$. Ono made the observation that these zeros of are often $j$-invariants of supersingular elliptic curves over $\overline{\mathbb{F}_p}$. We show that these supersingular zeros are in bijection with zeros modulo $p$ of an associated quaternionic modular form $v_E$. This allows us to prove that if the root number of $E$ is $-1$ then all supersingular $j$-invariants of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ are zeros of the corresponding divisor polynomial. If the roo…
We study which integers are admissible as Fourier coefficients of even integer weight newforms. In the specific case of the tau-function, we show that for all odd primes $\ell < 100$ and all integers $m \geq 1$, we have $$ τ(n) \neq \pm \ell, \pm 5^m. $$ For general newforms $f$ with even integer weight $2k$ and integer coefficients, we prove for most integers $j$ dividing $2k-1$ and all ordinary primes $p$ that $a_f(p^2)$ is never a $j$-th power. We prove a similar result for $a_f(p^4)$, conditional on the Frey-Mazur Conjecture. Our primary method involves relating questions about values of n…
Andrade and Keating computed the mean value of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions at the critical point, in the hyperelliptic ensemble over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Summing $L(1/2,χ_D)$ over monic, square-free polynomials $D$ of degree $2g+1$, the main term is of size $|D| \log_q |D|$ (where $|D|=q^{2g+1}$) and Andrade and Keating bound the error term by $|D|^{\frac 34+ \frac{\log_q(2)}{2}}$. For simplicity, we assume that $q$ is prime with $q \equiv 1 \pmod 4$. We prove that there is an extra term of size $|D|^{1/3} \log_q|D|$ in the asymptotic formula and bound the error term by …
For a monic polynomial $D(X)$ of even degree, express $\sqrt D$ as a Laurent series in $X^{-1}$; this yields a continued fraction expansion (similar to continued fractions of real numbers): \[\sqrt D=a_0+\dfrac{1}{a_1+\dfrac{1}{a_2+\dfrac{1}{\ddots}}},\quad a_i\text{ polynomials in }X.\] Such continued fractions were first considered by Abel in 1826, and later by Chebyshev. It turns out they are rarely periodic unless $D$ is defined over a finite field. Around 2001 van der Poorten studied non-periodic continued fractions of $\sqrt D$, with $D$ defined over the rationals, and simultaneously the…
An abelian surface $A_{/{\mathbb Q}}$ of prime conductor $N$ is favorable if its 2-division field $F$ is an ${\mathcal S}_5$-extension with ramification index 5 over ${\mathbb Q}_2$. Let $A$ be favorable and let $B$ be any semistable abelian variety of dimension $2d$ and conductor $N^d$ such that $B[2]$ is filtered by copies of $A[2]$. We give a sufficient class field theoretic criterion on $F$ to guarantee that $B$ is isogenous to $A^d$. As expected from our paramodular conjecture, we conclude that there is one isogeny class of abelian surfaces for each conductor in $\{277, 349,461,797,971\}$…
We obtain asymptotic formulas for the second and third moment of quadratic Dirichlet $L$--functions at the critical point, in the function field setting. We fix the ground field $\mathbb{F}_q$, and assume for simplicity that $q$ is a prime with $q \equiv 1 \pmod 4$. We compute the second and third moment of $L(1/2,χ_D)$ when $D$ is a monic, square-free polynomial of degree $2g+1$, as $g \to \infty$. The answer we get for the second moment agrees with Andrade and Keating's conjectured formula. For the third moment, we check that the leading term agrees with the conjecture.
We prove that the jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve y^2=f(x) is absolutely simple if deg(f)=q+1 where q is a power prime congruent to 5 modulo 8, the polynomial f(x) is irreducible over the ground field of characteristic zero and its Galois group is L_2(q).
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We propose an algorithm for computing rational representations of isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves via-adic differential equations with a sharp analysis of the loss of precision. Consequently, after having possibly lifted the problem in the $p$-adics, we derive fast algorithms for computing explicitly Cantor's division polynomials of hyperelliptic curves defined over finite fields.
Let p be an odd prime number and g $\ge$ 2 be an integer. We present an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over an extension K of the field of p-adic numbers Qp. It relies on an efficient resolution, with a logarithmic loss of p-adic precision, of a first order system of differential equations.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and be an integer coprime to $p$. We survey an algorithm for computing explicit rational representations of $(\ell,...,\ell)$-isogenies between Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of arbitrary genus over an extension $K$ of the field of $p$-adic numbers $\mathbb{Q}\_p$. The algorithm has a quasi-linear complexity in $\ell$ as well as in the genus of the curves.
In the previous paper, Hirakawa and the author determined the set of rational points of a certain infinite family of hyperelliptic curves $C^{(p;i,j)}$ parametrized by a prime number $p$ and integers $i$, $j$. In the proof, we used the standard $2$-descent argument and a Lutz-Nagell theorem that was proven by Grant. In this paper, we extend the above work. By using the descent theorem, the proof for $j=2$ is reduced to elliptic curves of rank $0$ that are independent of $p$. On the other hand, for odd $j$, we consider another hyperelliptic curve $C'^{(p;i,j)}$ whose Jacobian variety is isogeno…
