For a proper Hamiltonian action of a Lie group $G$ on a Kähler manifold $(X,ω)$ with momentum map $μ$ we show that the symplectic reduction $μ^{-1}(0)/G$ is a normal complex space. Every point in $μ^{-1}(0)$ has a $G$-stable open neighborhood on which $ω$ and $μ$ are given by a $G$-invariant Kähler potential. This is used to show that $μ^{-1}(0)/G$ is a Kähler space. Furthermore we examine the existence of potentials away from $μ^{-1}(0)$ with both positive and negative results.
We revisit generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler reduction introduced by Lin and Tolman in \cite{LT} from a viewpoint of geometric invariant theory. It is shown that in the strong Hamiltonian case introduced in the present paper, many well-known conclusions of ordinary K$\ddot{a}$hler reduction can be generalized without much effort to the generalized setting. It is also shown how generalized holomorphic structures arise naturally from the reduction procedure.
We study symplectic structures on Kähler surfaces with p_g = 0. We give an example of a projective surface which admits a symplectic structure which is not compatible with any Kähler metric.
Let Z be the real part of a K{ä}hler Hamiltonian manifold M. The O'Shea-Sjamaar's Theorem tells us that the moment polytope Delta(Z) corresponds to the anti-invariant part of the Kirwan polytope Delta(M). The purpose of the present paper is to explain how to parameterize the equations of the facets of Delta(Z) in terms of real Ressayre's pairs of Z.
In this paper, metric reduction in generalized geometry is investigated. We show how the Bismut connections on the quotient manifold are obtained from those on the original manifold. The result facilitates the analysis of generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler reduction, which motivates the concept of metric generalized principal bundles and our approach to construct a family of generalized holomorphic line bundles over $\mathbb{C}P^2$ equipped with some non-trivial generalized K$\ddot{a}$hler structures.
We prove that quasi-morphisms and quasi-states on a closed integral symplectic manifold descend under symplectic reduction to symplectic hyperplane sections. Along the way we show that quasi-morphisms that arise from spectral invariants are the Calabi homomorphism when restricted to Hamiltonians supported on stably displaceable sets.
In this paper we present a construction of Ricci-flat connections through an induction procedure. Given a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ of dimension $2n$, we define induction as a way to construct a symplectic manifold $(P,μ)$ of dimension $2n+2$. Given any symplectic connection $\nabla$ on $(M,ω)$, we define an induced connection $\nabla^P$ which is a Ricci-flat symplectic connection on $(P,μ)$.
In this note we give conditions which ensure the reduction of a symplectic connection in the process of a Marsden-Weinstein reduction and of the reduction of a presymplectic manifold.
We give an elementary construction of symplectic connections through reduction. This provides an elegant description of a class of symmetric spaces and gives examples of symplectic connections with Ricci type curvature, which are not locally symmetric; the existence of such symplectic connections was unknown.
In a previous article, we proved that symplectic homeomorphisms preserving a coisotropic submanifold C, preserve its characteristic foliation as well. As a consequence, such symplectic homeomorphisms descend to the reduction of the coisotropic C. In this article we show that these reduced homeomorphisms continue to exhibit certain symplectic properties. In particular, in the specific setting where the symplectic manifold is a torus and the coisotropic is a standard subtorus, we prove that the reduced homeomorphism preserves spectral invariants and hence the spectral capacity. To prove our main…
The imploded cross-section of a symplectic manifold is a stratified space allowing for an abelianization of its symplectic reduction. After recalling symplectic and Poisson reduction and reviewing the basics of symplectic implosion, we prove a cross-section theorem for Poisson manifolds, generalizing the Guillemin-Sternberg theorem for symplectic manifolds, which constitutes a first step towards Poisson implosion. On our way, we find and fix a mistake in the proof of Guillemin-Sternberg's theorem, and we identify Poisson transversals as the right analogue to symplectic submanifolds in this con…
Let M be the product of two compact Hamiltonian T-spaces X and Y. We present a formula for evaluating integrals on the symplectic reduction of M by the diagonal T action. At every regular value of the moment map for X x Y, the integral is the convolution of two distributions associated to the symplectic reductions of X by T and of Y by T. Several examples illustrate the computational strength of this relationship. We also prove a linear analogue which can be used to find cohomology pairings on toric orbifolds.
We show how to construct a resolution of symplectic orbifolds obtained as quotients of presymplectic manifolds with a torus action. As a corollary, this allows us to desingularise generic symplectic quotients. Given a manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group, symplectic reduction at a coadjoint orbit which is transverse to the moment map produces a symplectic orbifold. If moreover the points of this coadjoint orbit are regular elements of the Lie coalgebra, that is, their stabiliser is a maximal torus, the result for torus quotients may be applied to obtain a desingularisation…
We present a general framework for reduction of symplectic Q-manifolds via graded group actions. In this framework, the homological structure on the acting group is a multiplicative multivector field.
This article addresses the problem of developing an extension of the Marsden- Weinstein reduction process to symplectic Lie algebroids, and in particular to the case of the symplectic cover of a fiberwise linear Poisson structure, whose reduction process is the analogue to cotangent bundle reduction in the context of Lie algebroids.
In a previous article, we introduced a reduction procedure for locally conformally symplectic manifolds at any regular value of the momentum mapping. We use this construction to prove an analogue of a well-known theorem in the symplectic setting about the reduction of cotangent bundles.
We obtain universal models for several types of locally conformal symplectic manifolds via pullback or reduction. The relation with recent embedding results for locally conformal Kähler manifolds is discussed.
We show that each triangular Poisson Lie group can be decomposed into Poisson submanifolds each of which is a quotient of a symplectic manifold. The Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer symplectic reduction technique is then used to give a complete description of the symplectic foliation of all triangular Poisson structures on Lie groups. The results are illustrated in detail for the generalized Jordanian Poisson structures on SL(n).
The first part of this paper deals with electrical networks and symplectic reductions. We consider two operations on electrical networks (the "trace map" and the "gluing map") and show that they correspond to symplectic reductions. We also give several general properties about symplectic reductions, in particular we study the singularities of symplectic reductions when considered as rational maps on Lagrangian Grassmannians. This is motivated by [23] where a renormalization map was introduced in order to describe the spectral properties of self-similar lattices. In this text, we show that this…
Given an arbitrary sheaf $\mathcal{E}$ of $\mathcal{A}$-modules (or $\mathcal{A}$-module in short) on a topological space $X$, we define \textit{annihilator sheaves} of sub-$\mathcal{A}$-modules of $\mathcal{E}$ in a way similar to the classical case, and obtain thereafter the analog of the \textit{main theorem}, regarding classical annihilators in module theory, see Curtis[\cite{curtis}, pp. 240-242]. The familiar classical properties, satisfied by annihilator sheaves, allow us to set clearly the \textit{sheaf-theoretic version} of \textit{symplectic reduction}, which is the main goal in this…
We prove that every symplectic toric orbifold is a centered reduction of a Cartesian product of weighted projective spaces. A theorem of Abreu and Macarini shows that if the level set of the reduction passes through a non-displaceable set then the image of this set in the reduced space is also non-displaceable. Using this result we show that every symplectic toric orbifold contains a non-displaceable fiber and we identify this fiber.
Let $M$ be a compact, connected symplectic manifold with a Hamiltonian action of a compact $n$-dimensional torus $T$. Suppose that $M$ is equipped with an anti-symplectic involution $σ$ compatible with the $T$-action. The real locus of $M$ is the fixed point set $M^σ$ of $σ$. Duistermaat introduced real loci, and extended several theorems of symplectic geometry to real loci. In this paper, we extend another classical result of symplectic geometry to real loci: the Kirwan surjectivity theorem. In addition, we compute the kernel of the real Kirwan map. These results are direct consequences of te…
In this article, we introduce symplectic reduction in the framework of nonrational toric geometry. When we specialize to the rational case, we get symplectic reduction for the action of a general, not necessarily closed, Lie subgroup of the torus.
This encyclopedia article briefly reviews without proofs some of the main results in symplectic reduction. The article recalls most the necessary prerequisites to understand the main results, namely, group actions, momentum maps, and coadjoint orbits, among others.
Let (M,ω) be a symplectic manifold, and (Σ,σ) a closed connected symplectic 2-manifold. We construct a weakly symplectic form {ω^{D}}_{(Σ, σ)} on the space of immersions Σ\to M that is a special case of Donaldson's form. We show that the restriction of {ω^{D}}_{(Σ,σ)} to any orbit of the group of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms through a symplectic embedding (Σ,σ) \to (M,ω) descends to a weakly symplectic form ω^D_{\red} on the quotient by Sympl(Σ,σ), and that the obtained symplectic space is a symplectic quotient of the subspace of symplectic embeddings S_{e}(Σ,σ) with respect to the Sympl(Σ,σ…
We propose a produre of reduction a locally conformal symplectic structure. This procedure of reduction can be applied to wide class of submanifolds. There are no local obstructions for this procedure. But there are global obstructions. We find a necessary and sufficient condition when this reduction holds in terms of the special kind of de Rham cohomology class (tangent to the characteristic foliation) of the Lee form.
We present a reduction procedure for locally conformally symplectic (LCS) manifolds with an action of a Lie group preserving the conformal structure, with respect to any regular value of the momentum mapping. Under certain conditions, this reduction is compatible with the existence of a locally conformally Kähler structure. As a special consequence, we obtain a compatible contact reduction with respect to any regular value of the contact momentum mapping.
We use symplectic reduction to give a new construction of the core $C$ of a symplectic double groupoid $D$ as the common leaf space of characteristic foliations associated to various coisotropic submanifolds of $D$. In the case of the cotangent double groupoid of a Lie groupoid $G$, the canonical relations arising from this process turn out to be cotangent lifts of structure maps associated to $G$. We also show that under this reduction procedure the double groupoid structure on $D$ descends to a groupoid structure on the leaf space above, recovering the core groupoid structure on $C$ of Brown…
This paper deals with the ${\mathcal C}^0$-rigidity of the reduction of coiostropic submanifolds under the action of symplectic homeomorphism. More precisely, we exhibit several situations where a symplectic homeomorphism that takes a coisotropic submanifold to a smooth submanifold (which are then known to be coisotropic by a result of Humilière-Leclercq-Seyfaddini) abides to the non-squeezing property in the reduction.
These notes accompany a lecture about the topology of symplectic (and other) quotients. The aim is two-fold: first to advertise the ease of computation in the symplectic category; and second to give an account of some new computations for weighted projective spaces. We start with a brief exposition of how orbifolds arise in the symplectic category, and discuss the techniques used to understand their topology. We then show how these results can be used to compute the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of abelian symplectic reductions. We conclude by comparing the several rings associated to a w…
Given the Euclidean space $\R^{2n+2}$ endowed with a constant symplectic structure and the standard flat connection, and given a polynomial of degree 2 on that space, Baguis and Cahen have defined a reduction procedure which yields a symplectic manifold endowed with a Ricci-type connection. We observe that any symplectic manifold of dimension greater than 2 endowed with a symplectic connection of Ricci-type is locally given by a local version of such a reduction. We also consider the reverse of this reduction procedure, an induction procedure: we construct globally on a symplectic manifold end…
We study iteration maps of recurrence relations arising from mutation periodic quivers of arbitrary period. Combining tools from cluster algebra theory and (pre)symplectic geometry, we show that these cluster iteration maps can be reduced to symplectic maps on a lower dimensional submanifold, provided the matrix representing the quiver is singular. The reduced iteration map is explicitly computed for several new periodic quivers.
We show that a symplectic reduction of the symmetric representation of the generalized $n$-dimensional rigid body equations yields the $n$-dimensional Euler equation. This result provides an alternative to the more elaborate relationship between these equations established by Bloch, Crouch, Marsden, and Ratiu. Specifically, we exploit the inherent $\mathsf{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$-symmetry in the symmetric representation to present its relationship with the Euler equation via symplectic reduction facilitated by the dual pair recently developed by Skerritt and Vizman.
We show that the Siegel upper half space $Σ_{d}$ is identified with the Marsden-Weinstein quotient obtained by symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle $T^{*}\mathbb{R}^{2d^{2}}$ with $\mathsf{O}(2d)$-symmetry. The reduced symplectic form on $Σ_{d}$ corresponding to the standard symplectic form on $T^{*}\mathbb{R}^{2d^{2}}$ turns out to be a constant multiple of the symplectic form on $Σ_{d}$ obtained by Siegel. Our motivation is to understand the geometry behind two different formulations of the Gaussian wave packet dynamics commonly used in semiclassical mechanics. Specifically, we show …
We introduce the process of symplectic reduction along a submanifold as a uniform approach to taking quotients in symplectic geometry. This construction holds in the categories of smooth manifolds, complex analytic spaces, and complex algebraic varieties, and has an interpretation in terms of derived stacks in shifted symplectic geometry. It also encompasses Marsden--Weinstein--Meyer reduction, Mikami--Weinstein reduction, the pre-images of Poisson transversals under moment maps, symplectic cutting, symplectic implosion, and the Ginzburg--Kazhdan construction of Moore--Tachikawa varieties in T…
In this paper, our goal is to study the regular reduction theory of regular controlled Hamiltonian (RCH) systems with symplectic structure and symmetry, and this reduction is an extension of regular symplectic reduction theory of Hamiltonian systems under regular controlled Hamiltonian equivalence conditions. Thus, in order to describe uniformly RCH systems defined on a cotangent bundle and on the regular reduced spaces, we first define a kind of RCH systems on a symplectic fiber bundle. Then introduce regular point and regular orbit reducible RCH systems with symmetry by using momentum map an…
Coherently with the principle of analogy suggested by Dirac, we describe a general setting for reducing a classical dynamics, and the role of the Noether theorem -- connecting symmetries with constants of the motion -- within a reduction. This is the first of two papers, and it focuses on the reduction within the Poisson and the symplectic formalism.
We show that the averaged equation for a one-frequency fast-oscillating Hamiltonian system is the result of symplectic reduction of a certain natural system on the corresponding $S^1$-bundle with respect to the circle action. Furthermore, if the reduced configuration space happens to be a group, then under natural assumptions the averaged system turns out to be the Euler equation on a central extension of that group. This gives a new explanation of the drift, common in averaged system, as a similar shift is typically present in symplectic reductions and central extensions.
Associated to a symplectic quotient $M/\!/G$ is a Lagrangian correspondence $Λ_G$ from $M/\!/G$ to $M$. In this note, we construct in two examples quilts with seam condition on such a correspondence, in the case of $S^1$ acting on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with symplectic quotient $\mathbb{CP}^2/\!/ S^1 = \mathbb{CP}^1$. First, we study the quilted strips that would, if not for figure eight bubbling, identify the Floer chain groups $CF(γ,S_{\text{Cl}}^1)$ and $CF(\mathbb{RP}^2,T_{\text{Cl}}^2)$, where $γ$ is the connected double-cover of $\mathbb{RP}^1$. Second, we answer a question due to Akveld-Cannas…
We prove a theorem on singular symplectic cotangent bundle reduction in the Fréchet setting and apply it to Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with special emphasis on the Higgs sector of the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model. For the latter model we give a detailed description of the reduced phase space and show that the singular structure is encoded in a finite-dimensional Lie group action.
We generalize various symplectic reduction techniques to the context of the optimal momentum map. Our approach allows the construction of symplectic point and orbit reduced spaces purely within the Poisson category under hypotheses that do not necessarily imply the existence of a momentum map. We construct an orbit reduction procedure for canonical actions on a Poisson manifold that exhibits an interesting interplay with the von Neumann condition previously introduced by the author in his study of singular dual pairs. This condition ensures that the orbits in the momentum space of the optimal …
Motivated by the cohomological construction for the BV formalism from physics, this thesis asks how to perform the intersections and quotients appearing in the BV construction. This leads to the study of the derived symplectic reduction and the extension of these classical notions for group action and infinitesimal actions of Lie algebroids. In this context, we generalize the classical notion of moment maps for global and infinitesimal actions. We then study examples of such moment maps and their derived reductions and produce new shifted examples through a procedure of derived Lagrangian inte…
Let G be a compact torus acting on a compact symplectic manifold M in a Hamiltonian fashion, and T a subtorus of G. We prove that the kernel of $κ:H_G^*(M)\to H^*(M//G)$ is generated by a small number of classes $α\in H_G^*(M)$ satisfying very explicit restriction properties. Our main tool is the equivariant Kirwan map, a natural map from the G-equivariant cohomology of M to the G/T-equivariant cohomology of the symplectic reduction of M by T. We show this map is surjective. This is an equivariant version of the well-known result that the (nonequivariant) Kirwan map $κ:H_G^*(M)\to H^*(M//G)$ i…
There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux, Dazord, and Molino. In this case it will be show…
We introduce a de Rham model for stratified spaces arising from symplectic reduction. It turns out that the reduced symplectic form and its powers give rise to well-defined cohomology classes, even on a singular symplectic quotient.
These notes give an introduction to Geometric Invariant Theory and symplectic reduction, with lots of pictures and simple examples. We describe their applications to moduli of bundles and varieties, and their infinite dimensional analogues in gauge theory and the theory of special metrics on algebraic varieties. Donaldson's "quantisation" link between the infinite and finite dimensional situations is described, as are surprisingly strong connections between the bundle and variety cases.
We show that the symplectic reduction of the dynamics of $N$ point vortices on the plane by the special Euclidean group $\mathsf{SE}(2)$ yields a Lie--Poisson equation for relative configurations of the vortices. Specifically, we combine symplectic reduction by stages with a dual pair associated with the reduction by rotations to show that the $\mathsf{SE}(2)$-reduced space with non-zero angular impulse is a coadjoint orbit. This result complements some existing works by establishing a relationship between the symplectic/Hamiltonian structures of the original and reduced dynamics. We also find…
