A general reaction-diffusion equation with spatiotemporal delay and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. The existence and stability of positive steady state solutions are proved via studying an equivalent reaction-diffusion system without nonlocal and delay structure and applying local and global bifurcation theory. The global structure of the set of steady states is characterized according to type of nonlinearities and diffusion coefficient. Our general results are applied to diffusive logistic growth models and Nicholson's blowflies type models.
Some systems of parabolic equations with nonlocal initial conditions are studied. The systems arise when considering steady-state solutions to diffusive age-structured cooperative or competing species. Local and global bifurcation techniques are employed to derive a detailed description of the structure of positive coexistence solutions.
We consider the Fisher-KPP equation with a non-local interaction term. We establish a condition on the interaction that allows for existence of non-constant periodic solutions, and prove uniform upper bounds for the solutions of the Cauchy problem, as well as upper and lower bounds on the spreading rate of the solutions with compactly supported initial data.
In this paper, we gives a complete classification of the global dynamics of two- species Lotka-Volterra competition models with nonlocal dispersals: where K, P represent nonlocal operators, under the assumptions that the nonlo- cal operators are symmetric, the models admit two semi-trivial steady states and 0<bc<1. In particular, when both semi-trivial steady states are locally stable, it is proved that there exist infinitely many steady states and the solution with non- negative and nontrivial initial data converges to some steady state. Furthermore, we generalize these results to the case th…
In this paper, the global dynamics of two-species Lotka-Volterra competition models with nonlocal dispersals is studied. Under the assumption that dispersal kernels are symmetric, we prove that except for very special situations, local stability of semi-trivial steady states implies global stability, while when both semi-trivial steady states are locally unstable, the positive steady state exists and is globally stable. Moreover, our results cover the case that competition coefficients are location-dependent and dispersal strategies are mixture of local and nonlocal dispersals.
This paper is concerned with the global stability of non-critical/critical traveling waves with oscillations for time-delayed nonlocal dispersion equations. We first theoretically prove that all traveling waves, especially the critical oscillatory traveling waves, are globally stable in a certain weighted space, where the convergence rates to the non-critical oscillatory traveling waves are time-exponential, and the convergence to the critical oscillatory traveling waves are time-algebraic. Both of the rates are optimal. The approach adopted is the weighted energy method with the fundamental s…
The paper focuses on positive solutions to a coupled system of parabolic equations with nonlocal initial conditions. Such equations arise as steady-state equations in an age-structured predator-prey model with diffusion. By using global bifurcation techniques, we describe the structure of the set of positive solutions with respect to two parameters measuring the intensities of the fertility of the species. In particular, we establish co-existence steady-states, i.e. solutions which are nonnegative and nontrivial in both components.
We give an application of the Crandall-Rabinowitz theorem on local bifurcation to a system of nonlinear parabolic equations with nonlocal reaction and cross-diffusion terms as well as nonlocal initial conditions. The system arises as steady-state equations of two interacting age-structured populations.
This article addresses a new class of fractional nonlocal neutral stochastic differential system of order 1<q<2 including non-instantaneous impulses(NIIs) and state-dependent delay(SDD) with the Poisson jumps and the Wiener process in Hilbert spaces. We examine the existence of a mild solution without assuming the compactness of the resolvent operators. The Monch fixed point theorem is used along with the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness. An example is constructed to verify the theoretical developments.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solution to a non-autonomous diffusion equations with delay containing some hereditary characteristics and nonlocal diffusion in time-dependent space $C_{\mathcal{H}_{t}(Ω)}$. When the nonlinear function $f$ satisfies the polynomial growth of arbitrary order $p-1$ $(p \ge 2)$ and the external force $h \in L_{l o c}^{2}\left(\mathbb{R} ; H^{-1}(Ω)\right)$, we establish the existence and regularity of the time-dependent pullback attractors.
In the current work we study a nonlocal parabolic problem with Robin boundary conditions. The problem arises from the study of an idealized electrically actuated MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) device. Initially we study the steady-state problem in one dimension and we present some numerical results regarding its bifurcation diagram. Next the $N-$dimensional nonlocal problem steady-state problem is investigated and a Pohozaev-type identity is first obtained which then facilitates derivation of an estimate of the pull-in voltage for radially symmetric domains. Later the time-dependent pr…
In this paper we consider a one-dimensional nonlocal interaction equation with quadratic porous-medium type diffusion in which the interaction kernels are attractive, nonnegative, and integrable on the real line. Earlier results in the literature have shown existence of nontrivial steady states if the $L^1$ norm of the kernel $G$ is larger than the diffusion constant $\varepsilon$. In this paper we aim at showing that this equation exhibits a "multiple" behavior, in that solutions can either converge to the nontrivial steady states or decay to zero for large times. We prove the former situatio…
Some quantities in the reaction-diffusion models from cellular biology or ecology depend on the spatial average of density functions instead of local density functions. We show that such nonlocal spatial average can induce instability of constant steady state, which is different from classical Turing instability. For a general scalar equation with spatial average, the occurrence of the steady state bifurcation is rigorously proved, and the formula to determine the bifurcation direction and the stability of the bifurcating steady state is given. For the two-species model, spatially non-homogene…
We are concerned with travelling wave solutions arising in a reaction diffusion equation with bistable and nonlocal nonlinearity, for which the comparison principle does not hold. Stability of the equilibrium $u\equiv 1$ is not assumed. We construct a travelling wave solution connecting 0 to an unknown steady state, which is "above and away", from the intermediate equilibrium. For focusing kernels we prove that, as expected, the wave connects 0 to 1. Our results also apply readily to the nonlocal ignition case.
We study a class of nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations with a harvesting term where the nonlocal operator is given by a Bernstein function of the Laplacian. In particular, it includes the fractional Laplacian, fractional relativistic operators, sum of fractional Laplacians of different order etc. We study existence, uniqueness and multiplicity results of the solutions to the steady state equation. We also consider the parabolic counterpart and establish the long time asymptotic of the solutions. Our proof techniques rely on both analytic and probabilistic arguments.
We consider an initial value problem for a nonlocal differential equation with a bistable nonlinearity in several space dimensions. The equation is an ordinary differential equation with respect to the time variable t, while the nonlocal term is expressed in terms of spatial integration. We discuss the large time behavior of solutions and prove, among other things, the convergence to steady-states. The proof that the solution orbits are relatively compact is based upon the rearrangement theory.
The paper is concerned with a system consisting of two coupled nonlinear parabolic equations with a cross-diffusion term, where the solutions at positive times define the initial states. The equations arise as steady state equations of an age-structured predator-prey system with spatial dispersion. Based on unilateral global bifurcation methods for Fredholm operators and on maximal regularity for parabolic equations, global bifurcation of positive solutions is derived.
We consider a nonlocal aggregation equation with degenerate diffusion, which describes the mean-field limit of interacting particles driven by nonlocal interactions and localized repulsion. When the interaction potential is attractive, it is previously known that all steady states must be radially decreasing up to a translation, but uniqueness (for a given mass) within the radial class was open, except for some special interaction potentials. For general attractive potentials, we show that the uniqueness/non-uniqueness criteria are determined by the power of the degenerate diffusion, with the …
In this note, we give a positive answer to a question addressed in \cite{Nad-Per-Tan}. Precisely we prove that, for any kernel and any slope at the origin, there do exist travelling wave solutions (actually those which are "rapid") of the nonlocal Fisher equation that connect the two homogeneous steady states 0 (dynamically unstable) and 1. In particular this allows situations where 1 is unstable in the sense of Turing. Our proof does not involve any maximum principle argument and applies to kernels with {\it fat tails}.
We consider a population structured by a spacevariable and a phenotypical trait, submitted to dispersion, mutations, growth and nonlocal competition. This population is facing an {\it environmental gradient}: to survive at location $x$, an individual must have a trait close to some optimal trait $y_{opt}(x)$. Our main focus is to understand the effect of a {\it nonlinear} environmental gradient. We thus consider a nonlocal parabolic equation for the distribution of the population, with $y_{opt}(x) = \varepsilonθ(x)$, $0<\vert \varepsilon \vert \ll 1$. We construct steady states solutions and, w…
We present a finite element implementation for the steady-state nonlocal Dirichlet problem with homogeneous volume constraints. Here, the nonlocal diffusion operator is defined as integral operator characterized by a certain kernel function. We assume that the domain is an arbitrary $d$-dimensional hyperrectangle and the kernel is translation invariant. Under these assumptions, we carefully analyze the structure of the stiffness matrix resulting from a continuous Galerkin method with multilinear elements and exploit this structure in order to cope with the curse of dimensionality associated to…
We develop general heterogeneous nonlocal diffusion models and investigate their connection to local diffusion models by taking a singular limit of focusing kernels. We reveal the link between the two groups of diffusion equations which include both spatial heterogeneity and anisotropy. In particular, we introduce the notion of deciding factors which single out a nonlocal diffusion model and typically consist of the total jump rate and the average jump length. In this framework, we also discuss the dependence of the profile of the steady state solutions on these deciding factors, thus shedding…
We discuss the existence and regularity of periodic traveling-wave solutions of a class of nonlocal equations with homogeneous symbol of order $-r$, where $r>1$. Based on the properties of the nonlocal convolution operator, we apply analytic bifurcation theory and show that a highest, peaked, periodic traveling-wave solution is reached as the limiting case at the end of the main bifurcation curve. The regularity of the highest wave is proved to be exactly Lipschitz. As an application of our analysis, we reformulate the steady reduced Ostrovsky equation in a nonlocal form in terms of a Fourier …
Incorporating free boundary into time-delayed reaction-diffusion equations yields a compatible condition that guarantees the well-posedness of the initial value problem. With the KPP type nonlinearity we then establish a vanishing-spreading dichotomy result. Further, when the spreading happens, we show that the spreading speed and spreading profile are nonlinearly determined by a delay-induced nonlocal semi-wave problem. It turns out that time delay slows down the spreading speed.
In this paper, we study a certain class of nonlocal partial differential equations (PDEs). The equations arise from a key problem in network science, i.e., network generation from local interaction rules, which result in a change of the degree distribution as time progresses. The evolution of the generating function of this degree distribution can be described by a nonlocal PDE. To address this equation we will rigorously convert it into a local first order PDE. Then, we use theory of characteristics to prove solvability and regularity of the solution. Next, we investigate the existence of ste…
In this paper, we introduce a nonlocal model for linear steady Stokes system with physical no-slip boundary condition. We use the idea of volume constraint to enforce the no-slip boundary condition and prove that the nonlocal model is well-posed. We also show that and the solution of the nonlocal system converges to the solution of the original Stokes system as the nonlocality vanishes.
We establish the local uniqueness of steady transonic shock solutions with spherical symmetry for the three-dimensional full Euler equations. These transonic shock-fronts are important for understanding transonic shock phenomena in divergent nozzles. From mathematical point of view, we show the uniqueness of solutions of a free boundary problem for a multidimensional quasilinear system of mixed-composite elliptic--hyperbolic type. To this end, we develop a decomposition of the Euler system which works in a general Riemannian manifold, a method to study a Venttsel problem of nonclassical nonloc…
We are interested in studying the stationary solutions and phase transitions of aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion of porous medium-type, with exponent $1 < m < \infty$. We first prove the existence of possibly infinitely many bifurcations from the spatially homogeneous steady state. We then focus our attention on the associated free energy proving existence of minimisers and even uniqueness for sufficiently weak interactions. In the absence of uniqueness, we show that the system exhibits phase transitions: we classify values of $m$ and interaction potentials $W$ for which these p…
This paper studies an epidemic model with nonlocal dispersals. We focus on the influences of initial data and nonlocal dispersals on its spatial propagation. Here the initial data stand for the spatial concentrations of infectious agent and infectious human population when the epidemic breaks out and the nonlocal dispersals mean their diffusion strategies. Two types of initial data decaying to zero exponentially or faster are considered. For the first type, we show that the spreading speeds are two constants whose signs change with the number of elements in some set. Moreover, we find an inter…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong (pointwise) solutions to a linear nonlocal strongly coupled hyperbolic system of equations posed on all of Euclidean space. The system of equations comes from a linearization of a nonlocal model of elasticity in solid mechanics. It is a nonlocal analogue of the Navier-Lamé system of classical elasticity. We use a well-known semigroup technique that hinges on the strong solvability of the corresponding steady-state elliptic system. The leading operator is an integro-differential operator characterized by a distinctive matrix kernel which is used to co…
The global asymptotic stability of the unique steady state of a nonlinear scalar parabolic equation with a nonlocal boundary condition is studied. The equation describes the evolution of the temperature profile that is subject to a feedback control loop. It can be viewed as a model of a rudimentary thermostat, where a parameter controls the intensity of the heat flow in response to the magnitude of the deviation from the reference temperature at a boundary point. The system is known to undergo a Hopf bifurcation when the parameter exceeds a critical value. Results on the characterization of th…
This paper considers steady surface waves `riding' a Beltrami flow (a three-dimensional flow with parallel velocity and vorticity fields). It is demonstrated that the hydrodynamic problem can be formulated as two equations for two scalar functions of the horizontal spatial coordinates, namely the elevation $η$ of the free surface and the potential $Φ$ defining the gradient part (in the sense of the Hodge-Weyl decomposition) of the horizontal component of the tangential fluid velocity there. These equations are written in terms of a nonlocal operator $H(η)$ mapping $Φ$ to the normal fluid veloc…
This note investigates the properties of the traveling waves solutions of the nonlocal Fisher equation. The existence of such solutions has been proved recently in \cite{BNPR} but their asymptotic behavior was still unclear. We use here a new numerical approximation of these traveling waves which shows that some traveling waves connect the two homogeneous steady states $0$ and $1$, which is a striking fact since $0$ is dynamically unstable and $1$ is unstable in the sense of Turing.
We investigate the long term behavior in terms of global attractors, as time goes to infinity, of solutions to a continuum model for biological aggregations in which individuals experience long-range social attraction and short range dispersal. We consider the aggregation equation with both degenerate and non-degenerate diffusion in a bounded domain subject to various boundary conditions. In the degenerate case, we prove the existence of the global attractor and derive some optimal regularity results. Furthermore, in the non-degenerate case we give a complete structural characterization of the…
In this paper, we propose a novel free boundary problem to model the movement of single species with a range boundary. The spatial movement and birth/death processes of the species found within the range boundary are assumed to be governed by the classic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, while the movement of a free boundary describing the range limit is assumed to be influenced by the weighted total population inside the range boundary and is described by an integro-differential equation. Our free boundary equation is a generalization of the classical Stefan problem that allows for nonl…
Deriving emergent patterns from models of biological processes is a core concern of mathematical biology. In the context of partial differential equations (PDEs), these emergent patterns sometimes appear as local minimisers of a corresponding energy functional. Here we give methods for determining the qualitative structure of local minimum energy states of a broad class of multi-species nonlocal advection-diffusion models, recently proposed for modelling the spatial structure of ecosystems. We show that when each pair of species respond to one another in a symmetric fashion (i.e. via mutual av…
