We consider a population structured by a spacevariable and a phenotypical trait, submitted to dispersion, mutations, growth and nonlocal competition. This population is facing an {\it environmental gradient}: to survive at location $x$, an individual must have a trait close to some optimal trait $y_{opt}(x)$. Our main focus is to understand the effect of a {\it nonlinear} environmental gradient. We thus consider a nonlocal parabolic equation for the distribution of the population, with $y_{opt}(x) = \varepsilonθ(x)$, $0<\vert \varepsilon \vert \ll 1$. We construct steady states solutions and, when $θ$ is periodic, pulsating fronts. This requires the combination of rigorous perturbation techniques based on a careful application of the implicit function theorem in rather intricate function spaces. To deal with the phenotypic trait variable $y$ we take advantage of a Hilbert basis of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ made of eigenfunctions of an underlying Schrödinger operator, whereas to deal with the space variable $x$ we use the Fourier series expansions. Our mathematical analysis reveals, in particular, how both the steady states solutions and the fronts (speed and profile) are distorted by the nonlinear environmental gradient, which are important biological insights.
This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating front solutions in space-periodic media for a bistable two-species competition--diffusion Lotka--Volterra system. Considering highly competitive systems, a simple "high frequency or small amplitudes" algebraic sufficient condition for the existence of pulsating fronts is stated. This condition is in fact sufficient to guarantee that all periodic coexistence states vanish and become unstable as the competition becomes large enough.
We study KPP pulsating front speed-up and effective diffusivity enhancement by general periodic incompressible flows. We prove the existence of and determine the limits $c^*(A)/A$ and $D(A)/A^2$ as $A\to\infty$, where $c^*(A)$ is the minimal front speed and $D(A)$ the effective diffusivity.
This paper is devoted to reaction-diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearities depending periodically on time. These equations admit two linearly stable states. However, the reaction terms may not be bistable at every time. These may well be a periodic combination of standard bistable and monostable nonlinearities. We are interested in a particular class of solutions, namely pulsating fronts. We prove the existence of such solutions in the case of small time periods of the nonlinearity and in the case of small perturbations of a nonlinearity for which we know there exist pulsating fronts. …
We obtain a criterion for pulsating front speed-up by general periodic incompressible flows in two dimensions and in the presence of KPP nonlinearities. We achieve this by showing that the ratio of the minimal front speed and the effective diffusivity of the flow is bounded away from zero and infinity by constants independent of the flow. We also study speed-up of reaction-diffusion fronts by various examples of flows in two and three dimensions.
We consider a reactive Boussinesq system with no stress boundary conditions in a periodic domain which is unbounded in one direction. Specifically, we couple the reaction-advection-diffusion equation for the temperature, $T$, and the linearized Navier-Stokes equation with the Boussinesq approximation for the fluid flow, $u$. We show that this system admits smooth pulsating front solutions that propagate with a positive, fixed speed.
In this paper we are interested in propagation phenomena for nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations of the type: $δ_tu = J \times u - u + f (x, u) t \in R^+, x \in R^N$, where J is a probability density and f is a KPP nonlinearity periodic in the x variables. Under suitable assumptions we establish the existence of pulsating fronts describing the invasion of the 0 state by a heterogeneous state. We also give a variational characterization of the minimal speed of such pulsating fronts and exponential bounds on the asymptotic behavior of the solution.
This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating travelling fronts for a KPP reaction-diffusion equation posed in a multi-dimensional periodic medium. We provide an alternative proof of the classic existence result. Our proof relies largely on the construction of a wave profile under a moving frame, which avoids many technical difficulties in dealing with degenerate elliptic equations. Intriguingly, our analysis also yields that the profile of the front propagating along each rational direction in $\mathbb{S}^{N-1}$ is periodic in time.
This paper is concerned with the existence and qualitative properties of pulsating fronts for spatially periodic reaction-diffusion equations with bistable nonlinearities. We focus especially on the influence of the spatial period and, under various assumptions on the reaction terms and by using different types of arguments, we show several existence results when the spatial period is small or large. We also establish some properties of the set of periods for which there exist non-stationary fronts. Furthermore, we prove the existence of stationary fronts or non-stationary partial fronts at an…
We consider reaction-diffusion equations with combustion-type non-linearities in two dimensions and study speed-up of their pulsating fronts by general periodic incompressible flows with a cellular structure. We show that the occurence of front speed-up in the sense $\lim_{A\to\infty} c_*(A)=\infty$, with $A$ the amplitude of the flow and $c_*(A)$ the (minimal) front speed, only depends on the geometry of the flow and not on the reaction function. In particular, front speed-up happens for KPP reactions if and only if it does for ignition reactions. We also show that the flows which achieve thi…
This paper is concerned with the limit, as the interspecific competition rate goes to infinity, of pulsating front solutions in space-periodic media for a bistable two-species competition--diffusion Lotka--Volterra system. We distinguish two important cases: null asymptotic speed and non-null as-ymptotic speed. In the former case, we show the existence of a segregated stationary equilibrium. In the latter case, we are able to uniquely characterize the segregated pulsating front, and thus full convergence is proved. The segregated pulsating front solves an interesting free boundary problem. We …
A reaction-diffusion model which is called the field-road model was introduced by Berestycki, Roquejoffre and Rossi [9] to describe biological invasion with fast diffusion on a line. In this paper, we investigate this model in a heterogeneous landscape and establish the existence of the asymptotic spreading speed c * as well as its coincidence with the minimal wave speed of pulsating fronts along the road. We start with a truncated problem with an imposed Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove the existence of spreading speed c * R which coincides with the minimal speed of pulsating fronts for…
We consider a periodic reaction diffusion system which, because of competition between $u$ and $v$, does not enjoy the comparison principle. It also takes into account mutations, allowing $u$ to switch to $v$ and vice versa. Such a system serves as a model in evolutionary epidemiology where two types of pathogens compete in a heterogeneous environment while mutations can occur, thus allowing coexistence. We first discuss the existence of nontrivial positive steady states, using some bifurcation technics. Then, to sustain the possibility of invasion when nontrivial steady states exist, we constr…
We devote this paper to the issue of existence of pulsating travelling front solutions for spatially periodic heterogeneous reaction-diffusion equations in arbitrary dimension, in both bistable and more general multistable frameworks. In the multistable case, the notion of a single front is not sufficient to understand the dynamics of solutions, and we instead observe the appearance of a so-called propagating terrace. This roughly refers to a finite family of stacked fronts connecting intermediate stable steady states whose speeds are ordered. Surprisingly, for a given equation, the shape of t…
This paper is concerned with the propagating speeds of transition fronts in $R^N$ for spatially periodic bistable reaction-diffusion equations. The notion of transition fronts generalizes the standard notions of traveling fronts. Under the a priori assumption that there exist pulsating fronts for every direction $e$ with nonzero speeds, we show some continuity and differentiability properties of the front speeds and profiles with respect to the direction $e$. Finally, we prove that the propagating speed of any transition front is larger than the infimum of speeds of pulsating fronts and less t…
This paper is concerned with the following Lotka-Volterra competition system with advection in a periodic habitat \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \frac{\partial u_1}{\partial t} =d_1(x)\frac{\partial^2 u_1}{\partial x^2}-a_1(x)\frac{\partial u_1}{\partial x}+u_1\left(b_1(x)-a_{11}(x)u_1-a_{12}(x)u_2\right),\\ \frac{\partial u_2}{\partial t} =d_2(x)\frac{\partial^2 u_2}{\partial x^2}-a_2(x)\frac{\partial u_2}{\partial x}+u_2\left(b_2(x)-a_{21}(x)u_1-a_{22}(x)u_2\right), \end{cases} t>0,~x\in\Bbb R, \end{equation*} where $d_i(\cdot)$, $a_i(\cdot)$, $b_i(\cdot)$, $a_{ij}(\cdot)$ $(i,j=1,2)$ are $…
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with Kolmogrov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type nonlinearities in general periodic domains or in infinite cylinders with oscillating boundaries. Having a variational formula for the minimal speed of propagation involving eigenvalue problems ( proved in Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{BHN1}), we consider the minimal speed of propagation as a function of diffusion factors, reaction factors and periodicity parameters. There we study the limits, the asymptotic behaviors and the variat…
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations in a periodic framework. It deals with travelling wave solutions of the equation $$u_t =\nabla\cdot(A(z)\nabla u) +q(z)\cdot\nabla u+ f(z,u), t \in \mathbb{R}, z \in Ω,$$ propagating with a speed $c.$ In the case of a "combustion" nonlinearity, the speed $c$ exists and it is unique, while the front $u$ is unique up to a translation in $t.$ We give a $\min-\max$ and a $\max-\min$ formula for this speed $c.$ On the other hand, in the case of a "ZFK" or a "KPP" nonlinearity, there exists a…
The goal of this paper is to find the homogenized equation of a heterogenous Fisher-KPP model in a periodic medium. The solutions of this model are pulsating travelling fronts whose \emph{speeds} are superior to a parametric minimal speed $c^*_L$. We first find the homogenized limit of the stationary states which depend on the space variable in many cases. Then, we prove that the pulsating travelling fronts converge to a classical $u_0:=u_0(t,x)$ of a homogenous reaction-diffusion equation. The homogenized limit $u_0$ is also a travelling front whose minimal speed of propagation is given in te…

This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating traveling fronts for the equation: $\partial_t u - \nabla \cdot (A(t, x)\nabla u) + q(t, x) \cdot \nabla u = f (t, x, u)$, (1) where the diffusion matrix $A$, the advection term $q$ and the reaction term $f$ are periodic in $t$ and $x$. We prove that there exist some speeds $c^*$ and $c^{**}$ such that there exists a pulsating traveling front of speed $c$ for all $c\ge c^{**}$ and that there exists no such front of speed $c<c^*$. We also give some spreading properties for front-like initial data. In the case of a KPP-type reaction term, w…
In this paper, some properties of the minimal speeds of pulsating Fisher-KPP fronts in periodic environments are established. The limit of the speeds at the homogenization limit is proved rigorously. Near this limit, generically, the fronts move faster when the spatial period is enlarged, but the speeds vary only at the second order. The dependence of the speeds on habitat fragmentation is also analyzed in the case of the patch model.
