This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating travelling fronts for a KPP reaction-diffusion equation posed in a multi-dimensional periodic medium. We provide an alternative proof of the classic existence result. Our proof relies largely on the construction of a wave profile under a moving frame, which avoids many technical difficulties in dealing with degenerate elliptic equations. Intriguingly, our analysis also yields that the profile of the front propagating along each rational direction in $\mathbb{S}^{N-1}$ is periodic in time.
Pulsating fronts for nonlocal dispersion and KPP nonlinearity
We consider a periodic reaction diffusion system which, because of competition between $u$ and $v$, does not enjoy the comparison principle. It also takes into account mutations, allowing $u$ to switch to $v$ and vice versa. Such a system serves as a model in evolutionary epidemiology where two types of pathogens compete in a heterogeneous environment while mutations can occur, thus allowing coexistence. We first discuss the existence of nontrivial positive steady states, using some bifurcation technics. Then, to sustain the possibility of invasion when nontrivial steady states exist, we constr…
We study front propagation phenomena for a large class of nonlocal KPP-type reaction-diffusion equations in oscillatory environments, which model various forms of population growth with periodic dependence. The nonlocal diffusion is an anisotropic integro-differential operator of order $α\in (0,2)$.
The aim of this paper is to study the generalized Fisher-KPP equation with nonlocal diffusion. In specific we prove the existence of a critical speed so that traveling front type solutions exist up to this critical speed and non-existence of traveling fronts below this critical value. Moreover, we obtain uniqueness, up to translation, and decay estimates of these traveling fronts.
We propose a simple alternative proof of a famous result of Gallay regarding the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the critical front of the Fisher-KPP equation which shows that perturbations of the critical front decay algebraically with rate $t^{-3/2}$ in a weighted $L^\infty$ space. Our proof is based on pointwise semigroup methods and the key remark that the faster algebraic decay rate $t^{-3/2}$ is a consequence of the lack of an embedded zero of the Evans function at the origin for the linearized problem around the critical front.
We consider a variational problem associated with the minimal speed of pulsating traveling waves of the equation $u_t=u_{xx}+b(x)(1-u)u$, $x\in{\mathbb R},\ t>0$, where the coefficient $b(x)$ is nonnegative and periodic in $x\in{\mathbb R}$ with a period $L>0$. It is known that there exists a quantity $c^*(b)>0$ such that a pulsating traveling wave with the average speed $c>0$ exists if and only if $c\geq c^*(b)$. The quantity $c^*(b)$ is the so-called minimal speed of pulsating traveling waves. In this paper, we study the problem of maximizing $c^*(b)$ by varying the coefficient $b(x)$ under …
This paper investigates the existence of generalized transition fronts for Fisher-KPP equations in one-dimensional, almost periodic media. Assuming that the linearized elliptic operator near the unstable steady state admits an almost periodic eigenfunction, we show that such fronts exist if and only if their average speed is above an explicit threshold. This hypothesis is satisfied in particular when the reaction term does not depend on x or (in some cases) is small enough. Moreover, except for the threshold case, the fronts we construct and their speeds are almost periodic, in a sense. When o…
The solution h to the Fisher-KPP equation with a steep enough initial condition develops into a front moving at velocity 2, with logarithmic corrections to its position. In this paper we investigate the value h(c t, t) of the solution ahead of the front, at time t and position c t, with c > 2. That value goes to zero exponentially fast with time, with a well-known rate, but the prefactor depends in a non-trivial way of c, the initial condition and the non-linearity in the equation. We compute an asymptotic expansion of that prefactor for velocities c close to 2. The expansion is surprisingly e…
We study entire solutions to homogeneous reaction-diffusion equations in several dimensions with Fisher-KPP reactions. Any entire solution $0<u<1$ is known to satisfy \[ \lim_{t\to -\infty} \sup_{|x|\le c|t|} u(t,x) = 0 \qquad \text{for each $c<2\sqrt{f'(0)}\,$,} \] and we consider here those satisfying \[ \lim_{t\to -\infty} \sup_{|x|\le c|t|} u(t,x) = 0 \qquad \text{for some $c>2\sqrt{f'(0)}\,$.} \] When $f$ is $C^2$ and concave, our main result provides an almost complete characterization of transition fronts as well as transition solutions with bounded width within this class of solutions.
We study the asymptotic spreading of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) fronts in heterogeneous shifting habitats, with any number of shifting speeds, by further developing the method based on the theory of viscosity solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Our framework addresses both reaction-diffusion equation and integro-differential equations with a distributed time-delay. The latter leads to a class of limiting equations of Hamilton-Jacobi-type depending on the variable $x/t$ and in which the time and space derivatives are coupled together. We will first establish uniqueness results for …
In a recent paper by Cantrell, Cosner and Yu, two-component KPP systems with competition of Lotka--Volterra type were analyzed and their long-time behavior largely settled. In particular, the authors established that any constant positive steady state, if unique, is necessarily globally attractive. In the present paper, we give an explicit and biologically very natural example of oscillatory three-component system. Using elementary techniques or pre-established theorems, we show that it has a unique constant positive steady state with two-dimensional unstable manifold, a stable limit cycle, a …
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a monostable integro-differential Fisher-KPP equation , that is where the standard Laplacian is replaced by a convolution term, when the dispersal kernel is fat-tailed. We focus on two different regimes. Firstly, we study the long time/long range scaling limit by introducing a relevant rescaling in space and time and prove a sharp bound on the (super-linear) spreading rate in the Hamilton-Jacobi sense by means of sub-and super-solutions. Secondly, we investigate a long time/small mutation regime for which, after identifying a relevant rescaling …
This paper establishes the spectral stability in exponentially weighted spaces of smooth traveling monotone fronts for reaction diffusion equations of Fisher-KPP type with nonlinear degenerate diffusion coefficient. It is assumed that the former is degenerate, that is, it vanishes at zero, which is one of the equilibrium points of the reaction. A parabolic regularization technique is introduced in order to locate a subset of the compression spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave, whereas the point spectrum is proved to be stable with the use of energy estimates. Detailed asymptoti…
We consider the non-local Fisher-KPP equation modeling a population with individuals competing with each other for resources with a strength related to their distance, and obtain the asymptotics for the position of the invasion front starting from a localized population. Depending on the behavior of the competition kernel at infinity, the location of the front is either $2t - ({3}/2)\log t + O(1)$, as in the local case, or $2t - O(t^β)$ for some explicit $β\in (0,1)$. Our main tools here are alocal-in-time Harnack inequality and an analysis of the linearized problem with a suitable moving Diri…
We study the one-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation, with an initial condition $u_0(x)$ that coincides with the step function except on a compact set. A well-known result of M. Bramson states that, as $t\to+\infty$, the solution converges to a traveling wave located at the position $X(t)=2t-(3/2)\log t+x_0+o(1)$, with the shift $x_0$ that depends on $u_0$. U. Ebert and W. Van Saarloos have formally derived a correction to the Bramson shift, arguing that $X(t)=2t-(3/2)\log t+x_0-3\sqrtπ/\sqrt{t}+O(1/t)$. Here, we prove that this result does hold, with an error term of the size $O(1/t^{1-γ})$, for …
We consider a nonlocal generalization of the Fisher-KPP equation in one spatial dimension. As a parameter is varied the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this Turing bifurcation. Our results are two-fold. First, we prove the existence of a two-parameter family of bifurcating stationary periodic solutions and derive a rigorous asymptotic approximation of these solutions. We also study the spectral stability of the bifurcating stationary periodic solutions with respect to almost co-periodic perturbations. Secondly, we restrict to a specific class of exponential ke…
We investigate the uniform boundedness of the fronts of the solutions to the randomized Fisher-KPP equation and to its linearization, the parabolic Anderson model. It has been known that for the standard (i.e. deterministic) Fisher-KPP equation, as well as for the special case of a randomized Fisher-KPP equation with so-called ignition type nonlinearity, one has a uniformly bounded (in time) transition front. Here, we show that this property of having a uniformly bounded transition front fails to hold for the general randomized Fisher-KPP equation. Nevertheless, we establish that this property…
In the current series of two papers, we study the long time behavior of the following random Fisher-KPP equation $$ u_t =u_{xx}+a(θ_tω)u(1-u),\quad x\in\R, \eqno(1) $$ where $ω\inΩ$, $(Ω, \mathcal{F},\mathbb{P})$ is a given probability space, $θ_t$ is an ergodic metric dynamical system on $Ω$, and $a(ω)>0$ for every $ω\inΩ$. We also study the long time behavior of the following nonautonomous Fisher-KPP equation, $$ u_t=u_{xx}+a_0(t)u(1-u),\quad x\in\R, \eqno(2) $$ where $a_0(t)$ is a positive locally Hölder continuous function. In the first part of the series, we studied the stability of posit…
We consider the one-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation with step-like initial data. Nolen, Roquejoffre, and Ryzhik showed that the solution $u$ converges at long time to a traveling wave $ϕ$ at a position $\tilde σ(t) = 2t - (3/2)\log t + α_0- 3\sqrtπ/\sqrt{t}$, with error $O(t^{γ-1})$ for any $γ>0$. With their methods, we find a refined shift $σ(t) = \tilde σ(t) + μ_* (\log t)/t + α_1/t$ such that in the frame moving with $σ$, the solution $u$ satisfies $u(t,x) = ϕ(x) + ψ(x)/t + O(t^{γ-3/2})$ for a certain profile $ψ$ independent of initial data. The coefficient $α_1$ depends on initial data, bu…
We revisit the existence and stability of the critical front in the extended Fisher-KPP equation, refining earlier results of Rottschäfer and Wayne [28] which establish stability of fronts without identifying a precise decay rate. We verify that the front is marginally spectrally stable: while the essential spectrum touches the imaginary axis at the origin, there are no unstable eigenvalues and no eigenvalue (or resonance) embedded in the essential spectrum at the origin. Together with the recent work of Avery and Scheel [3], this implies nonlinear stability of the critical front with sharp $t…
We study the front of the solution to the F-KPP equation with randomized non-linearity. Under suitable assumptions on the randomness involving spatial mixing behavior and boundedness, we show that the front of the solution lags at most logarithmically in time behind the front of the solution of the corresponding linearized equation, i.e. the parabolic Anderson model. This can be interpreted as a partial generalization of Bramson's findings for the homogeneous setting. Building on this result, we establish functional central limit theorems for the fronts of the solutions to both equations.
We establish the logarithmic Bramson correction to the position of solutions to the Fisher--KPP equation with nonlocal diffusion. Solutions with step-like initial data typically resemble a front at position $c_{*} t - \frac{3}{2 λ_{*}} \log t + \mathcal{O}(1)$ for explicit constants $c_{*}$ and $λ_{*}$. However, certain singular diffusions exhibit more exotic behavior.
This paper is concerned with the existence of pulsating front solutions in space-periodic media for a bistable two-species competition--diffusion Lotka--Volterra system. Considering highly competitive systems, a simple "high frequency or small amplitudes" algebraic sufficient condition for the existence of pulsating fronts is stated. This condition is in fact sufficient to guarantee that all periodic coexistence states vanish and become unstable as the competition becomes large enough.
We prove the existence of traveling fronts in diffusive Rosenzweig-MacArthur and Holling-Tanner population models and investigate their relation with fronts in a scalar Fisher-KPP equation. More precisely, we prove the existence of fronts in a Rosenzweig-MacArthur predator-prey model in two situations: when the prey diffuses at the rate much smaller than that of the predator and when both the predator and the prey diffuse very slowly. Both situations are captured as singular perturbations of the associated limiting systems. In the first situation we demonstrate clear relations of the fronts wi…
We consider a space-inhomogeneous Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov (KPP) equation with a nonlocal diffusion and an almost-periodic nonlinearity. By employing and adapting the theory of homogenization, we show that solutions of this equation asymptotically converge to its stationary states in regions of space separated by a front that is determined by a Hamilton-Jacobi variational inequality.
We establish in this paper the logarithmic Bramson correction for Fisher-KPP equations on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}$. The level sets of solutions with step-like initial conditions are located at position $c_*t-\frac{3}{2λ_*}\ln t+\mathcal{O}(1)$ as $t\rightarrow+\infty$ for some explicit positive constants $c_*$ and $λ_*$. This extends a well-known result of Bramson in the continuous setting to the discrete case using only PDE arguments. A by-product of our analysis also gives that the solutions approach the family of logarithmically shifted traveling front solutions with minimal wave speed $c_*…
