Opened up by early contributions due to, among others, H. Bohr, Hardy-Riesz, Bohnenblust-Hille, Neder and Landau the last 20 years show a substantial revival of systematic research on ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$, and more recently even on general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_n s}$. This involves the intertwining of classical work with modern functional analysis, harmonic analysis, infinite dimensional holomorphy and probability theory as well as analytic number theory. Motivated through this line of research the main goal of this article is to start a systematic study of a variety of fundamental aspects of vector-valued general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_{n} s}$, so Dirichlet series, where the coefficient are not necessarily in $\mathbb{C}$ but in some arbitrary Banach space $X$.
The abscissas of convergence, uniform convergence and absolute convergence of vector valued Dirichlet series with respect to the original topology and with respect to the weak topology $σ(X,X')$ of a locally convex space $X$, in particular of a Banach space $X$, are compared. The relation of their coincidence with geometric or topological properties of the underlying space $X$ is investigated. Cotype in the context of Banach spaces, and nuclearity and certain topological invariants for Fréchet spaces play a relevant role.
We study random unconditionality of Dirichlet series in vector-valued Hardy spaces $\mathcal H_p(X)$. It is shown that a Banach space $X$ has type 2 (respectively, cotype 2) if and only if for every choice $(x_n)_n\subset X$ it follows that $(x_n n^{-s})_n$ is Random unconditionally convergent (respectively, divergent) in $\mathcal H_2(X)$. The analogous question on $\mathcal H_p(X)$ spaces for $p\neq2$ is also explored. We also provide explicit examples exhibiting the differences between the unconditionality of $(x_n n^{-s})_n$ in $\mathcal H_p(X)$ and that of $(x_n z^n)_n$ in $H_p(X)$.
We study Hausdorff-Young type inequalities for vector-valued Dirichlet series which allow to compare the norm of a Dirichlet series in the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}_{p} (X)$ with the $q$-norm of its coefficients. In order to obtain inequalities completely analogous to the scalar case, a Banach space must satisfy the restrictive notion of Fourier type/cotype. We show that variants of these inequalities hold for the much broader range of spaces enjoying type/cotype. We also consider Hausdorff-Young type inequalities for functions defined on the infinite torus $\mathbb{T}^{\infty}$ or the boolean …
We present an abstract approach to the abscissas of convergence of vector-valued Dirichlet series. As a consequence we deduce that the abscissas for Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series are all equal. We also introduce and study weak versions of the abscissas for scalar-valued Dirichlet series.
We consider various Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series whose norms are given by weighted $\ell^2$ norms of the Dirichlet coefficients. We characterize the multiplier algebras for some of these spaces.
Inspired by results of Bayart on ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$, the main purpose of this article is to start an $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_{n}s}$. Whereas the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of ordinary Dirichlet series, in view of an ingenious identification of Bohr, can be seen as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on the infinite dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^\infty$, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series is build as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on certain compact abelian groups, including the Bohr compactification $\overline{\…
Inspired by a recent article on Fréchet spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ due to J.~Bonet, we study topological and geometrical properties of certain scales of Fréchet spaces of general Dirichlet spaces $\sum a_n e^{-λ_n s}$. More precisely, fixing a frequency $λ= (λ_n)$, we focus on the Fréchet space of $λ$-Dirichlet series which have limit functions bounded on all half planes strictly smaller than the right half plane $[\mathrm{Re} >0]$. We develop an abstract setting of pre-Fréchet spaces of $λ$-Dirichlet series generated by certain admissible normed spaces of $λ$-Dirich…
We study composition operators on spaces of double Dirichlet series, focusing our interest on the characterization of the composition operators of the space of bounded double Dirichlet series $\HCdos$. We also show how the composition operators of this space of Dirichlet series are related to the composition operators of the corresponding spaces of holomorphic functions. Finally, we give a characterization of the superposition operators in $\HC$ and in the spaces $\mathcal{H}^p$.
The main purpose of this article is to survey on some key elements of a recent $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_{n}s}$, which was mainly inspired by the work of Bayart and Helson on ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$. In view of an ingenious identification of Bohr, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of ordinary Dirichlet series can be seen as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on the infinite dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^\infty$. Extending these ideas, the $\mathcal{H}_p$-theory of $λ$-Dirichlet series is build as a sub-theory of Fourier analysis on what we ca…
We show that the symbol of a bounded composition operator on the Wiener algebra of Dirichlet series does not need to belong to this algebra. Our example even gives an absolutely summing (hence compact) composition operator.
For a Dirichlet series g, we study the Volterra operator Tg of symbol g, acting on a class of weighted Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series. We obtain sufficient / necessary conditions for Tg to be bounded (resp. compact), involving BMO and Bloch type spaces on some half-plane. We also investigate the membership of Tg in Schatten classes. We also relate the boundedness of Tg to the boundedness of a multiplicative Hankel form of symbol g.
Given a frequency $λ$, we study general Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_n s}$. First, we give a new condition on $λ$ which ensures that a somewhere convergent Dirichlet series defining a bounded holomorphic function in the right half-plane converges uniformly in this half-plane, improving classical results of Bohr and Landau. Then, following recent works of Defant and Schoolmann, we investigate Hardy spaces of these Dirichlet series. We get general results on almost sure convergence which have an harmonic analysis flavour. Nevertheless, we also exhibit examples showing that it seems hard to g…
We study boundedness and compactness of composition operators on weighted Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series. Particularly, we obtain in some specific cases, upper and lower bounds of the essential norm of these operators and a criterion of compactness on classicals weighted Bergman spaces. Moreover, a sufficient condition of compactness is obtained using the notion of Carleson's measure.
A new and simple proof of the embedding of the Hardy--Hilbert space of Dirichlet series into a conformally invariant Hardy space of the half-plane is presented, and the optimal constant of the embedding is computed.
We show that a composition operator on weighted Bergman spaces $\mathcal{A}_μ^p$ is invertible if and only if it is Fredholm if and only if it is an isometry.
Inversion theorems of Wiener type are essential tools in analysis and number theory. We derive a weighted version of an inversion theorem of Wiener type for general Dirichlet series from that of Edwards from 1957, and we outline an alternative proof based on the duality theory of convex cones and extension techniques for characters of semigroups. Variants and arithmetical applications are described, including the case of multidimensional weighted generalized Dirichlet series.
A result of Helson on general Dirichlet series $\sum a_{n} e^{-λ_{n}s}$ states that, whenever $(a_{n})$ is $2$-summable and $λ=(λ_{n})$ satisfies a certain condition introduced by Bohr, then for almost all homomorphism $ω\colon (\mathbb{R},+) \to \mathbb{T}$ the Dirichlet series $\sum a_{n} ω(λ_{n})e^{-λ_{n}s}$ converges on the open right half plane $[Re>0]$. For ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$ Hedenmalm and Saksman related this result with the famous Carleson-Hunt theorem on pointwise convergence of Fourier series, and Bayart extended it within his theory of Hardy spaces $\mathcal…
Hartman proved in 1939 that the width of the largest possible strip in the complex plane, on which a Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ is uniformly a.s.-sign convergent (i.e., $\sum_n \varepsilon_n a_n n^{-s}$ converges uniformly for almost all sequences of signs $\varepsilon_n =\pm 1$) but does not convergent absolutely, equals $1/2$. We study this result from a more modern point of view within the framework of so called Hardy-type Dirichlet series with values in a Banach space.
Continuity, compactness, the spectrum and ergodic properties of the differentiation operator are investigated, when it acts in the Fréchet space of all Dirichlet series that are uniformly convergent in all half-planes $\{s \in \mathbb{C} \ | \ {\rm Re} s > \varepsilon \}$ for each $\varepsilon>0$. The properties of the formal inverse of the differentiation are also investigated.
The aim of this paper is to study when two composition operators on the Hilbert space of Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients belong to the same component or when their difference is compact. As a corollary we show that if a linear combination of composition operators with polynomial symbols of degree at most 2 is compact, then each composition operator is compact.
Given a Banach space $X$ and $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, it is well known that the two Hardy spaces $H_p(\mathbb{T},X)$ ($\mathbb{T}$ the torus) and $H_p(\mathbb{D},X)$ ($\mathbb{D}$ the disk) have to be distinguished carefully. This motivates us to define and study two different types of Hardy spaces $\mathcal{H}_p(X)$ and $\mathcal{H}^+_p(X)$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ with coefficients in $X$. We characterize them in terms of summing operators as well as holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables, and prove that they coincide whenever $X$ has the analytic Radon-Nikodým Prop…
The Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series denoted by ${\cal H}^p$ ($p\ge1$) have been studied in [12] when p = 2 and in [3] for the general case. In this paper we study some Lp-generalizations of spaces of Dirichlet series, particularly two families of Bergman spaces denoted ${\cal A}^p$ and ${\cal B}^p$. We recover classical properties of spaces of analytic functions: boundedness of point evaluation, embeddings between these spaces and "Littlewood-Paley" formulas when p = 2. We also show that the ${\cal B}^p$ spaces have properties similar to the classical Bergman spaces of the unit disk while the…
We introduce a framework to derive quantitative central limit theorems in the context of non-linear approximation of Gaussian random variables taking values in a separable Hilbert space. In particular, our method provides an alternative to the usual (non-quantitative) finite dimensional distribution convergence and tightness argument for proving functional convergence of stochastic processes. We also derive four moments bounds for Hilbert-valued random variables with possibly infinite chaos expansion, which include, as special cases, all finite-dimensional four moments results for Gaussian app…
We develop the theory of tamed spaces which are Dirichlet spaces with distribution-valued lower bounds on the Ricci curvature and investigate these from an Eulerian point of view. To this end we analyze in detail singular perturbations of Dirichlet form by a broad class of distributions. The distributional Ricci bound is then formulated in terms of an integrated version of the Bochner inequality using the perturbed energy form and generalizing the well-known Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition. Among other things we show the equivalence of distributional Ricci bounds to gradient estimate…
We prove results on complex interpolation of vector-valued Sobolev spaces over the half-line with Dirichlet boundary condition. Motivated by applications in evolution equations, the results are presented for Banach space-valued Sobolev spaces with a power weight. The proof is based on recent results on pointwise multipliers in Bessel potential spaces, for which we present a new and simpler proof as well. We apply the results to characterize the fractional domain spaces of the first derivative operator on the half line.
The weak well-posedness results of the strongly damped linear wave equation and of the non linear Westervelt equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions are proved on arbitrary three dimensional domains or any two dimensional domains which can be obtained by a limit of NTA domains caractarized by the same geometrical constants. The two dimensional result is obtained thanks to the Mosco convergence of the functionals corresponding to the weak formulations for the Westervelt equation with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The non homogeneous Dirichlet condition is also tr…
We obtain new results on Fourier multipliers for Dirichlet-Hardy spaces. As a consequence, we establish a Littlewood-Paley type inequality which yields a simple proof that the Dirichlet monomials form a Schauder basis for p>1.
We characterize the space of multipliers from the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $\mathcal H_p$ into $\mathcal H_q$ for every $1 \leq p,q \leq \infty$. For a fixed Dirichlet series, we also investigate some structural properties of its associated multiplication operator. In particular, we study the norm, the essential norm, and the spectrum for an operator of this kind. We exploit the existing natural identification of spaces of Dirichlet series with spaces of holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables and apply several methods from complex and harmonic analysis to obtain our results.…
We show that, in every weighted Dirichlet space on the unit disk with superharmonic weight, the Taylor series of a function in the space is $(C,α)$-summable to the function in the norm of the space, provided that $α>1/2$. We further show that the constant $1/2$ is sharp, in marked contrast with the classical case of the disk algebra.
This paper is associated with Nevanlinna class, Dirichlet series and Szegö's problem in infinitely many variables. As we will see, there is a natural connection between these topics. The paper first introduces the Nevanlinna class and the Smirnov class in this context, and generalizes the classical theory in finitely many variables to the infinite-variable setting. These results applied to Szegö's problem on Hardy spaces in infinitely many variables. Moreover, this paper is also devoted to the study of the correspondence between the Nevanlinna functions and Dirichlet series.
In this paper, we are interested in explicit zero-free discs for some Dirichlet series and we also study a general Beurling-Nyman criterion for $L$-functions. Our results generalize and improve previous results obtained by N. Nikolski and by A. de Roton. As a concrete application, we get, for example, a Beurling-Nyman type criterion for the Siegel zero problem.
We study the boundary behavior of functions in the Hardy spaces HD^p for ordinary Dirichlet series. Our main result, answering a question of H. Hedenmalm, shows that the classical F. Carlson theorem on integral means does not extend to the imaginary axis for functions in HD^\infty, i.e., for ordinary Dirichlet series in H^\infty of the right half-plane. We discuss an important embedding problem for HD^p, the solution of which is only known when p is an even integer. Viewing HD^p as Hardy spaces of the infinite-dimensional polydisc, we also present analogues of Fatou's theorem.
We study 1D discrete Schrödinger operators $H$ with integer-valued potential and show that, $(i)$, invertibility (in fact, even just Fredholmness) of $H$ always implies invertibility of its half-line compression $H_+$ (zero Dirichlet boundary condition, i.e. matrix truncation). In particular, the Dirichlet eigenvalues avoid zero -- and all other integers. We use this result to conclude that, $(ii)$, the finite section method (approximate inversion via finite and growing matrix truncations) is applicable to $H$ as soon as $H$ is invertible. The same holds for $H_+$.
We introduce a mean counting function for Dirichlet series, which plays the same role in the function theory of Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series as the Nevanlinna counting function does in the classical theory. The existence of the mean counting function is related to Jessen and Tornehave's resolution of the Lagrange mean motion problem. We use the mean counting function to describe all compact composition operators with Dirichlet series symbols on the Hardy--Hilbert space of Dirichlet series, thus resolving a problem which has been open since the bounded composition operators were described b…
We present some open problems and describe briefly some possible research directions in the emerging theory of Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series and their intimate counterparts, Hardy spaces on the infinite-dimensional torus. Links to number theory are emphasized throughout the paper.
We denote by $\Hp$ the Hilbert space of ordinary Dirichlet series with square-summable coefficients. The main result is that a bounded sequence of points in the half-plane $σ>1/2$ is an interpolating sequence for $\Hp$ if and only if it is an interpolating sequence for the Hardy space $H^2$ of the same half-plane. Similar local results are obtained for Hilbert spaces of ordinary Dirichlet series that relate to Bergman and Dirichlet spaces of the half-plane $σ>1/2$.
