Nonperturbative approach based on exact solution of Boltzmann kinetic equation in the relaxation time approximation is developed for the study of nonlinear response of electron-doped few-layer graphene to a high-frequency electromagnetic field. It is shown that nonperturbative approach can be applied to a two-dimensional conductor with an arbitrary isotropic spectrum of carriers.
We present a nonperturbative quasi-classical theory of graphene photoconductivity. We consider the influence of low-frequency (microwave, terahertz, mid-infrared) radiation on the static conductivity of a uniform graphene layer and calculate its photoconductivity as a function of frequency, polarization and strength of the external ac electric field, as well as on the material properties (electron density, scattering time) and temperature. The theory is valid at frequencies $\hbarω\lesssim 2E_F$ and at arbitrarily strong ac electric fields. We compare our results with those of the third-order …
An electromagnetic response of a single graphene layer to a uniform, arbitrarily strong electric field $E(t)$ is calculated by solving the kinetic Boltzmann equation within the relaxation-time approximation. The theory is valid at low (microwave, terahertz, infrared) frequencies satisfying the condition $\hbarω\lesssim 2E_F$, where $E_F$ is the Fermi energy. We investigate the saturable absorption and higher harmonics generation effects, as well as the transmission, reflection and absorption of radiation incident on the graphene layer, as a function of the frequency and power of the incident r…
We investigate a valleytronic device based on graphene with charge separation at different sublattices and correspondingly at nonequivalent valleys. We characterize the maximality condition of valley polarization and investigate the parameters and conditions upon which we can coherently control the carriers and store data via valley degree of freedom. The valley polarization is controlled by the amplitude as well as the carrier envelope phase of the pulse and the curvature of the electron trajectory in the reciprocal space. When strong field excitation is taken into account, the optical select…
Graphene exhibits extremely strong optical nonlinearity when a strong perpendicular magnetic field is applied, the response current shows strong field dependence even for moderate light intensity, and the perturbation theory fails. We nonperturbatively calculate full optical conductivities induced by a periodic field in an equation-of-motion framework based on the Floquet theorem, with the scattering described phenomenologically. The nonlinear response at high fields is understood in terms of the dressed electronic states, or Floquet states, which is further characterized by the optical conduc…
The microscopic quantum theory of nonlinear stimulated scattering of chiral particles in doped $AB$ stacked bilayer graphene on Coulomb field of charged impurities in the presence of strong coherent electromagnetic radiation is presented. The Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix is solved analytically. Here the interaction of electrons with the scattering potential is taken into account as a perturbation. The absorption rate of nonlinear inverse-bremsstrahlung for a grand canonical ensemble of fermionic chiral particles is calculated using the obtained solution. The analysis o…
Electromagnetic waves reflection, transmission and absorption by graphene - magnetic semiconductor - graphene sandwich-structure in magnetic field: Faraday geometry
In a system with a Dirac-like linear dispersion there are always states that fulfill the resonance condition for electromagnetic radiation of arbitrary frequency $Ω$. When a flat band is present two kinds of resonant transitions are found. Considering the $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ graphene model as a minimal model with a flat band and Dirac cones, and describing the dynamics using the interaction picture, we study the band transitions induced by an external electromagnetic field. We found that transitions depend upon the relative angle between the electron momentum and the electromagnetic field wave v…
We report on the synthesis of the epoxy-based composites with graphene fillers and testing their electromagnetic shielding efficiency by the quasi-optic free-space method in the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (220 - 325 GHz). The curing adhesive composites were produced by a scalable technique with a mixture of single-layer and few-layer graphene layers of a few-micron lateral dimensions. It was found that the electromagnetic transmission, T, is low even at small concentrations of graphene fillers: T<1% at frequency of 300 GHz for a composite with only 1 wt% of graphene. The main shieldin…
Electromagnetic dressing by a high-frequency field drastically modifies the electronic transport properties on Dirac systems. Here its effects on the energy spectrum of graphene with two possible phases of Kekulé distortion (namely, Kek-Y and Kek-O textures) are studied. Using Floquet theory it is shown how circularly polarized light modifies the gapless spectrum of the Kek-Y texture, producing dynamical band gaps at the Dirac point that depends on the amplitude and the frequency of the electric field, and breaks the valley degeneracy of the gapped spectrum of the Kek-O texture. To further exp…
Multifunctional graphene-based and amorphous magnetic materials: synthesis, characterization, and applications in electromagnetic shielding and advanced gas sensing
We consider a periodic array of graphene nanoribbons under the action of a strong dc electric field $E_0$ and an external electromagnetic excitation with the frequency $ω$ and the lateral wave vector $q$. Solving the quasi-classical Boltzmann kinetic equation and calculating the surface dynamic conductivity $σ_{2D}(q,ω,E_0)$ and the absorption coefficient of such a system we show that the real part of the conductivity and the absorption coefficient may become negative under certain conditions. Physically this corresponds to the amplification of the electromagnetic waves at the expense of the e…
