We study thermodynamics of dynamical traversable wormholes. These wormholes are investigated in the background of different cosmological models, with and without the cosmological constant, and which include the power-law and exponential cosmologies also. We work out the generalized surface gravity for wormholes of different shapes. The surface gravity is evaluated at the trapping horizon and the unified first law of thermodynamics is set up. The thermodynamic stability of these wormholes has also been investigated. Some cases of asymptotically flat, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter wormholes have been considered as well. Our results generalize those that exist for static Morris-Thorne wormholes.
In this paper we study the relationship between the Einstein field equations for the (2+1)-dimensional evolving wormhole and the first law of thermodynamics. It has been shown that the Einstein field equations can be rewritten as a similar form of the first law of thermodynamics at the dynamical trapping horizon (as proposed by Hayward) for the dynamical spacetime which describes intrinsic thermal properties associated with the trapping horizon. For a particular choice of the shape and potential functions we are able to express field equations as a similar form of first law of thermodynamics $…
From a geometric point of view, we show that the unitary symmetries $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ stem fundamentally from Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström wormhole geometry through spacetime complexification. Then, we develop quantum tunneling which makes these wormholes traversable for particles. Finally, this leads to wormhole thermodynamics.
In the context of GR, we study the thermodynamic stability of evolving Lorentzian wormholes at the apparent horizon. The average pressure of the anisotrropic components is considered as the pressure of the wormhole. According to the requirements of stable equilibrium in conventional thermodynamics, we calculate the heat capacity at constant pressure and Gibbs free energy and analyze the local and global thermodynamic stability of the wormhole.
The thermodynamic stability of a thin-shell wormhole in a Schwarzschild bulk is considered. From the first law, entropy function is found which satisfies the local intrinsic stability conditions. Heat capacity emerges as a well-defined regular function justifying the stability of a Schwarzschild thin-shell wormhole. The scope of applications of the method is not limited by the Schwarzschild wormhole.
In the context of modified $f(R)$ gravity theory, we study time-dependent wormhole spacetimes in the radiation background. In this framework, we attempt to generalize the thermodynamic properties of time-dependent wormholes in $f(R)$ gravity. Finally, at event horizon, the rate of change of total entropy has been discussed.
We study the thermodynamic equilibrium of matter in a wormhole `station' which connects various distinct asymptotic regions of a spacetime. An example of the `station' is a traversable wormhole connecting two distant regions. The temperatures of matter in the `station' measured at various asymptotic regions are not necessarily the same. We propose a generalized `temperature' which characterizes the thermal equilibrium in the spacetime with the `station'. We additionally discuss how thermal `equilibrium' works for a multiply connected spacetime.
In the frame work of Palatini approach to modified $f(R)$ theories of gravity, we attempt to investigate the thermodynamic behavior of time-dependent wormhole geometries. By considering an evolving wormhole spacetime, we find the field equations in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. The energy density and pressure are redefined in order to satisfy the continuity equation. To discuss the thermodynamic behavior, an expression for the variation of total entropy is obtained. Then, we extend our discussions to apparent and event horizons of evolving wormholes. We employ the radius of apparent and event horiz…
This paper deals with some thermodynamical aspects of Lorentzian wormholes, including the formulation of the three main laws and the consideration of a possible thermal emission made up of some sort of phantom radiation coming out from the wormhole at a negative temperature. In order for these topics to be consistently developed we have used a 2+2 formalism first advanced by Hayward for spherically symmetric space-times, where a generalized surface gravity is defined on the trapping horizon. Our results generalize still further those of the already generalized gravitational thermodynamics.
In the context of modified $f(R)$ gravity, we attempt to study the thermodynamic properties of the evolving Lorentzian wormholes at the apparent horizon. It is shown that the wormhole can be derived from a particular $f(R)$ model in the radiation background. Moreover, it has been shown that the field equations can be cast to a similar form $dE = TdS + WdV + Td\bar{S}$ at the apparent horizon for the evolving Lorentzian wormhole. Compared to the case of Einstein's general relativity, an additional term $Td\bar{S}$ appears here.
In this paper thermodynamics of static Morris-Thorne wormholes has been discussed in the context of $f(R)$ gravity. The generalized surface gravity, unified first law of thermodynamics and wormhole dynamics have been studied at trapping horizons. We have investigated thermodynamics in non-minimal coupling of curvature and matter which produces very complex equations. Our results generalize the results that have already been derived in Einstein's gravity in the absence of curvature-matter coupling.
In this work, we study the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) at the apparent horizon of an evolving Lorentzian wormhole. We obtain the expressions of thermal variables at the apparent horizon. Choosing the two well-known entropy functions i.e. power-law and logarithmic, we obtain the expressions of GSL. We have analyzed the GSL using a power-law form of scale factor $a(t)=a_0t^n$ and the special form of shape function $b(r)=\frac{b_{0}}{r}$. It is shown that GSL is valid in the evolving wormhole spacetime for both choices of entropies if the power-law exponent is small, but for la…
In classical thermodynamics, heat cannot spontaneously pass from a colder system to a hotter system, which is called the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, if the initial states are entangled, the direction of the thermodynamic arrow of time may not be guaranteed. Here we take the thermofield double state at $0+1$ dimension as the initial state and assume its gravity duality to be the eternal black hole in AdS$_2$ space. We make the temperature difference between the two sides by changing the Hamiltonian. We turn on proper interaction between the two sides and calculate the changes in energ…

In this paper we show that, analogously to as it occurs for black holes, there exist three well-defined laws for Lorentzian wormhole thermodynamics and that these laws are related with a thermal phantom-like radiation process coming from the wormhole throat. It is argued that the existence of wormholes could be manifested by means such a radiation. These results are obtained by analyzing the Hayward formalism of spherically symmetric solutions containing trapping horizons, the phenomenon of phantom accretion onto wormholes and the development of phantom thermodynamics.

Recently Verlinde has suggested a new approach to gravity which interprets gravitational interaction as a kind of entropic force. The new approach uses the holographic principle by stating that the information is kept on the holographic screens which coincide with equipotential surfaces. Motivated by this new interpretation of gravity (but not being limited by it) we study equipotential surfaces, the Unruh-Verlinde temperature, energy and acceleration for various static space-times: generic spherically symmetric solutions, axially symmetric black holes immersed in a magnetic field, traversable…
We present several classes of exact solutions in the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system with a cosmological constant. The spacetime has spherical, plane, or hyperbolic symmetry and the higher-dimensional solutions are obtained in a closed form only in the plane symmetric case. Among them, the class-I solution represents an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AdS) dynamical black hole or wormhole. In four and higher dimensions, the generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass blows up at AdS infinity, inferring that the spacetime is only locally AdS. In three dimensions, the scalar field becomes triv…
We study the classical Euclidean wormholes in the context of extended theories of gravity. With no loss of generality, we use the dynamical equivalence between $f(\tilde{R})$ gravity and scalar-tensor theories to construct a point-like Lagrangian in the flat FRW space time. We first show the dynamical equivalence between Palatini $f(\tilde{R})$ gravity and the Brans-Dicke theory with self-interacting potential, and then show the dynamical equivalence between the Brans-Dicke theory with self-interacting potential and the minimally coupled O'Hanlon theory. We show the existence of new Euclidean …
We present the Jacobi metric formalism for dynamical wormholes. We show that in isotropic dynamical spacetimes , a first integral of the geodesic equations can be found using the Jacobi metric, and without any use of geodesic equation. This enables us to reduce the geodesic motion in dynamical wormholes to a dynamics defined in a Riemannian manifold. Then, making use of the Jacobi formalism, we study the circular stable orbits in the Jacobi metric framework for the dynamical wormhole background. Finally, we also show that the Gaussian curvature of the family of Jacobi metrics is directly relat…
We investigate the necessary condition for the existence of classical Euclidean wormholes in a conformally non-invariant gravitational model minimally coupled to an scalar field. It is shown that while the original Ricci tensor with positive eigenvalues does not allow the Euclidean wormholes to occur, under dynamical conformal transformations the Ricci tensor, with respect to the original metric, is dynamically coupled with the conformal field and its eigenvalues may become negative allowing the Euclidean wormholes to occur. Therefore, it is conjectured that dynamical conformal transformations…

Crude comparison between four alternative proposals for the very definition of a wormhole is provided, all of which were intended to apply to the dynamical cases. An interesting dynamical solution, based upon large scale magnetic fields, is used for the comparisons. Such solution goes beyond the perfect fluid approximation due to an anisotropic pressure component, bringing to the fore some unsuspected features of those definitions. Certain notions as reversible traversability are claimed as a way to select among those definitions the best suited one to represent our intuition of what a wormhol…
Static asymptotically Lifshitz wormholes and black holes in vacuum are shown to exist for a class of Lovelock theories in d=2n+1>7 dimensions, selected by requiring that all but one of their n maximally symmetric vacua are AdS of radius l and degenerate. The wormhole geometry is regular everywhere and connects two Lifshitz spacetimes with a nontrivial geometry at the boundary. The dynamical exponent z is determined by the quotient of the curvature radii of the maximally symmetric vacua according to n(z^2-1)+1=(l/L)^2, where L corresponds to the curvature radius of the nondegenerate vacuum. Lig…
We quantize the two-dimensional projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a bi-local as well as space-like wormhole interaction. The resulting quantum Hamiltonian coincides with the one obtained through summing over all genus in the string field theory for two-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations. This implies that our wormhole interaction can be interpreted as a splitting or joining interaction of one-dimensional strings.
In this study we present evolving wormhole configurations in third-order {Lovelock} gravity and investigate the possibility that these solutions satisfy the energy conditions. Using a generalized Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime, we derive evolving wormhole geometries by considering a constraint on the Ricci scalar. In standard cosmological models, the Ricci scalar is independent of the radial coordinate $r$ and is only a function of time. We use this property to introduce dynamic wormhole solutions expanding in an inflationary cosmological background and explore the effects of higher-orde…
The thin-shell wormhole created using the Darmois-Israel formalism applied to Robinson-Trautman family of spacetimes is presented. The stress energy tensor created on the throat is interpreted in terms of two dust streams and it is shown that asymptotically this wormhole settles to the Schwarzschild wormhole with a throat located at the horizon position. This behavior shows a nonlinear stability (within the Robinson-Trautman class) of this spherically symmetric wormhole. The gravitational radiation emitted by the Robinson-Trautman wormhole during the transition to spherical symmetry is indisti…

Lightlike p-branes (LL-branes) with dynamical (variable) tension allow simple and elegant Polyakov-type and dual to it Nambu-Goto-like world-volume action formulations. Here we first briefly describe the dynamics of LL-branes as test objects in various physically interesting gravitational backgrounds of black hole type, including rotating ones. Next we show that LL-branes are the appropriate gravitational sources that provide proper matter energy momentum tensors in the Einstein equations of motion needed to generate traversable wormhole solutions, in particular, self-consistent cylindrical ro…
A dynamical theory of traversable wormholes is detailed in spherical symmetry. Generically a wormhole consists of a tunnel of trapped surfaces between two mouths, defined as temporal outer trapping horizons with opposite senses, in mutual causal contact. In static cases, the mouths coincide as the throat of a Morris-Thorne wormhole, with surface gravity providing an invariant measure of the radial curvature or "flaring-out". The null energy condition must be violated at a wormhole mouth. Zeroth, first and second laws are derived for the mouths, as for black holes. Dynamic processes involving w…
The dynamical generation of wormholes within an extension of General Relativity (GR) containing (Planck's scale-suppressed) Ricci-squared terms is considered. The theory is formulated assuming the metric and connection to be independent (Palatini formalism) and is probed using a charged null fluid as a matter source. This has the following effect: starting from Minkowski space, when the flux is active the metric becomes a charged Vaidya-type one, and once the flux is switched off the metric settles down into a static configuration such that far from the Planck scale the geometry is virtually i…

First a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe filled with dust and a conformally invariant scalar field is quantized. For the closed model we find a discrete set of wormhole quantum states. In the case of flat spacelike sections we find states with classical behaviour at small values of the scale factor and quantum behaviour for large values of the scale factor. Next we study a FRW model with a conformally invariant scalar field and a nonvanishing cosmological constant dynamically introduced by regarding the vacuum as a perfect fluid. The ensuing Wheeler-DeWitt equation turns out to be a b…
Consistent Lagrangian description of lightlike p-branes (LL-branes) is presented in two equivalent forms - a Polyakov-type formulation and a dual to it Nambu-Goto-type formulation. An important characteristic feature of the LL-branes is that the brane tension appears as a non-trivial additional dynamical degree of freedom. Next, properties of p=2 LL-brane dynamics (as a test brane) in D=4 Kerr or Kerr-Newman gravitational backgrounds are discussed in some detail. It is shown that the LL-brane automatically positions itself on the horizon and rotates along with the same angular velocity. Finall…
Motivated by the cosmological wormhole solutions obtained from our recent numerical investigations, we provide a definition of a wormhole which applies to dynamical situations. Our numerical solutions do not have timelike trapping horizons but they are wormholes in the sense that they connect two or more asymptotic regions. Although the null energy condition must be violated for static wormholes, we find that it can still be satisfied in the dynamical context. Two analytic solutions for a cosmological wormhole connecting two Friedmann universes without trapping horizons are presented.
A lattice regularization for the $2$d projectable Horava-Lifshitz (HL) quantum gravity is known to be the $2$d causal dynamical triangulations (CDT), and the $2$d CDT can be generalized so as to include all possible genus contributions non-perturbatively. We show that in the context of HL gravity, effects coming from such a non-perturbative sum over topologies can be successfully taken into account, if we quantize the $2$d projectable HL gravity with a simple bi-local wormhole interaction. This conference paper is based on the article, Phys. Lett. B 816 (2021), 136205.
Dynamical wormholes in higher dimensions which admit flat emergent universe (EU) model is presented. The EU model is free from initial singularity with other observed features of the universe. The basic assumption of EU model was that the present universe emerged out from a static Einstein universe. EU model originates from a dynamical wormhole, its throat is the seed of Einstein Static universe. A class of cosmological solutions in a higher dimensional flat universe is presented. A new shape function for closed universe is determined. The non-linear equation of state (EoS) corresponds to thre…
The dynamical behavior of traversable wormholes and black holes under impulsive radiation is studied in an exactly soluble dilaton gravity model. Simple solutions are presented where a traversable wormhole is constructed from a black hole, or the throat of a wormhole is stably enlarged or reduced. These solutions illustrate the basic operating principles needed to construct similar analytic solutions in full Einstein gravity.
In this paper, we examine the existence of traversable wormhole solutions within the Chern-Simons modified gravity. We find a non-trivial solution in the theory with dynamical Chern-Simons coefficient in the absence of matter sources. This result displays a situation opposite to GR where the matter sources violating the energy conditions are required.
