The failure of Landau-Fermi liquid theory is often considered a telltale sign of universal, scale-invariant behavior in the emergent field theory of interacting fermions. Nevertheless, there exist borderline cases where weak scale invariance coupled with particle-hole asymmetry can coexist with the Landau quasiparticle paradigm. In this letter, I show explicitly that a Landau-Fermi liquid can exist for weak power-law scaling of the retarded Green's function. Such an exotic variant of the traditional Fermi liquid, although exhibiting a finite quasiparticle weight and large quasiparticle lifetime, is shown to always be incompatible with Luttinger's theorem for any non-trivial scaling. This result yields evidence for a Fermi liquid-like ground state in the high-field, underdoped pseudogap phase of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors.
Landau-Fermi liquid theory is conventionally believed to hold whenever the interacting single-particle density of states develops a $δ$-like component at the Fermi surface, which is associated with quasiparticles. Here we show that a microscopic justification can be actually achieved under more general circumstances, even in case coherent quasiparticles are totally missing and the interacting single-particle density of states vanishes at the chemical potential as consequence of a pole singularity in the self-energy.
Motivated by recent experiments in the Kitaev honeycomb lattice, Kondo insulators, and the "Luttinger's theorem-violating" Fermi liquid phase of the underdoped cuprates, we extend the theoretical machinery of Landau-Fermi liquid theory to a system of itinerant, interacting Majorana-like particles. Building upon a previously introduced model of "nearly self-conjugate" fermionic polarons, a Landau-Majorana kinetic equation is introduced to describe the collective modes and Fermi surface instabilities in a fluid of particles whose fermionic degrees of freedom obey the Majorana reality condition. …
Landau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass $m^{\star}$. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Ferm…
We report optical measurements demonstrating that the low-energy relaxation rate ($1/τ$) of the conduction electrons in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ obeys scaling relations for its frequency ($ω$) and temperature ($T$) dependence in accordance with Fermi-liquid theory. In the thermal relaxation regime, $1/τ\propto (\hbarω)^2 + (pπ\kB T)^2$ with $p=2$, and $ω/T$ scaling applies. Many-body electronic structure calculations using dynamical mean-field theory confirm the low-energy Fermi-liquid scaling, and provide quantitative understanding of the deviations from Fermi-liquid behavior at higher energy and temper…
We study the stability of Kitaev quasiparticles in the presence of a perturbing Heisenberg interaction as a Fock space localization phenomenon. We identify parameter regimes where Kitaev states are localized, fractal or delocalized in the Fock space of exact eigenstates, with the first two implying quasiparticle stability. Finite temperature calculations show that a vison gap, and a nonzero plaquette Wilson loop at low temperatures, both characteristic of the deconfined Kitaev spin liquid phase, persist far into the neighboring phase that has a concomitant stripy spin-density wave (SDW) order.…
We present a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Ca$_{1.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$RuO$_4$. Four distinct bands are revealed and along the Ru-O bond direction their orbital characters are identified through a light polarization analysis and comparison to dynamical mean-field theory calculations. Bands assigned to $d_{xz}, d_{yz}$ orbitals display Fermi liquid behavior with fourfold quasiparticle mass renormalization. Extremely heavy fermions - associated with a predominantly $d_{xy}$ band character - are shown to display non-Fermi-liquid behavior. We thus demonstrate that Ca$_{1…
We explore with exact diagonalization the propagation of a single hole in four magnetic phases of the t-J-like Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice: the Neel antiferromagnetic, stripe, zigzag and Kitaev spin-liquid phase. We find coherent propagation of spin-polaron quasiparticles in the antiferromagnetic phase by a similar mechanism as in the $t$-$J$ model for high-$T_c$ cuprates. In the stripe and zigzag phases clear quasiparticles features appear in spectral functions of those propagators where holes are created and annihilated on one sublattice, while they remain largely {\it hid…
We investigate the real-time spin response of the $S=1$ Kitaev model upon stimuli of a pulsed magnetic field in one of the edges using the exact diagonalization method. It is found that the pulsed magnetic field has no effect on the appearance of the spin moments in the quantum spin liquid region, but induces the spin oscillations in the other edge region with a small magnetic field. This is understood by the existence of the itinerant quasiparticles, which carry the spin excitations without the spin polarization in the quantum spin liquid state. This suggests that the spin fractionalizations …
We give a self-consistent theory of the scale dependent effective mass enhancement m*/m of quasiparticles by 3D antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations in the presence of disorder at an AFM quantum critical point. The coupling of fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom in the critical regime is described in terms of a critical quasiparticle theory. Using the fact that even in the "non-Fermi liquid" regime the quasiparticle width does not exceed the quasiparticle energy, we adopt relations from Fermi liquid theory to determine the dependence of the spin fluctuation spectrum on m*/m, from whi…
Strong quantum fluctuations in magnetic systems can create disordered quantum spin liquid phases of matter which are not predicted by classical physics. The complexity of the exotic phenomena on display in spin liquids has led to a great deal of theoretical and experimental interest. However, understanding the fundamental nature of the excitations in these systems remains challenging. In this work, we consider the Lifshitz quantum critical point in a two-dimensional frustrated $XY$ antiferromagnet. At this point, quantum fluctuations destroy long range order, leading to the formation of an alg…
We have prepared high-quality epitaxial thin films of CaRuO$_3$ with residual resistivity ratios up to 55. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance and a $T^2$ temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity only below 1.5 K, whose coefficient is substantially suppressed in large magnetic fields, establish CaRuO$_3$ as a Fermi liquid (FL) with anomalously low coherence scale. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) $T^{3/2}$ dependence is found between 2 and 25 K. The high sample quality allows access to the intrinsic electronic properties via THz spectroscopy. For frequencies below 0.6 THz…
Strongly correlated Fermi systems are among the most intriguing, best experimentally studied and fundamental systems in physics. There is, however, lack of theoretical understanding in this field of physics. The ideas based on the concepts like Kondo lattice and involving quantum and thermal fluctuations at a quantum critical point have been used to explain the unusual physics. Alas, being suggested to describe one property, these approaches fail to explain the others. This means a real crisis in theory suggesting that there is a hidden fundamental law of nature. It turns out that the hidden f…
One of the most successful theories of a non-Fermi liquid metallic state is the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) theory of the half-filled Landau level. In this paper, we study continuous quantum phase transitions out of the CFL state and into a Landau Fermi liquid, in the limit of no disorder and fixed particle number. This transition can be induced by tuning the bandwidth of the Landau level relative to the interaction energy, for instance through an externally applied periodic potential. We find a transition to the Landau Fermi liquid through a gapless Mott insulator with a Fermi surface of neu…
Motivated by theory and experiments on strain induced pseudo-Landau levels (LLs) of Dirac fermions in graphene and topological materials, we consider its extension for Bogoliubov quasiparticles (QPs) in a nodal superconductor (SC). We show, using an effective low energy description and numerical lattice calculations for a d-wave SC, that a spatial variation of the electronic hopping amplitude or a spatially varying s-wave pairing component can act as a pseudo-magnetic field for the Bogoliubov QPs, leading to the formation of pseudo-LLs. We propose realizations of this phenomenon in the cuprate…
In periodic systems of interacting electrons, Fermi and Luttinger surfaces refer to the locations within the Brillouin zone of poles and zeros, respectively, of the single-particle Green's function at zero energy and temperature. Such difference in analytic properties underlies the emergence of well-defined quasiparticles close to a Fermi surface, in contrast to their supposed non-existence close to a Luttinger surface, where the single-particle density-of-states vanishes at zero energy. We here show that, contrary to such common belief, coherent `quasiparticles' do exist also approaching a Lu…
We study the intrinsic effects of dimensional reduction on the transport equation of a perfectly two-dimensional Landau-Fermi liquid. By employing the orthogonality condition on the 2D analog of the Fourier-Legendre expansion, we find that the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of the fermionic system differ from its three-dimensional counterpart, with the latter changing drastically. Specifically, the modified Landau-Silin kinetic equation is heavily dependent on the solution of a non-trivial contour integral specific to the 2D liquid. We find the solution to this integral and its gen…
A quasiparticle pattern advanced in Landau's first article on Fermi liquid theory is adapted to elucidate the properties of a class of strongly correlated Fermi systems characterized by a Lifshitz phase diagram featuring a quantum critical point (QCP) where the density of states diverges. The necessary condition for stability of the Landau Fermi Liquid state is shown to break down in such systems, triggering a cascade of topological phase transitions that lead, without symmetry violation, to states with multi-connected Fermi surfaces. The end point of this evolution is found to be an exception…
We study Fermi liquids with a Fermi surface that lacks continuous rotational invariance, and in the presence of an arbitrary quartic interaction. We obtain the expressions of the generalized static susceptibilities that measure the linear response of a generic order parameter to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. We apply our formulae to the spin and charge susceptibilities. Based on the resulting expressions, we make a proposal for the definition of the Landau parameters in non-isotropic Fermi liquid.
We examine a wavefunction ansatz in which a doped hole can experience a quantum transition from a charge $+e$ Landau quasiparticle to a neutral spinon as a function of the underlying spin-spin correlation. As shown variationally, such a wavefunction accurately captures all the essential features revealed by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group simulations in a two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder. Hence its analytic form can provide an explicit understanding of the mechanism for the unconventional ground state. The transition in the phase diagram is accompanied by a change of the h…
The quasiparticle formalism invented by Lev Landau for description of conventional Fermi liquids is generalized to exotic superconductivity attributed to Cooper pairing, whose measured properties defy explanation within the standard BCS-Fermi Liquid description. We demonstrate that in such systems the quasiparticle number remains equal to particle number, just as in common Fermi liquids. We are then able to explain the puzzling relationship between the variation with doping $x$ of two key properties of the family La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu0$_4$ of exotic superconductors, namely the $T=0$ superfluid de…
The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and the Boltzmann transport equation for one-dimensional charge-density-wave (CDW) conductors are derived from a microscopic model by applying the Keldysh Green's function approach under a quasiclassical approximation. The effects of external electric field and impurity pinning of the CDW are fully taken into account without relying on a phenomenological argument. These equations simultaneously describe spatiotemporal dynamics of both the CDW and quasiparticles, so they serve as a powerful tool to analyze various nonequilibrium phenomena, such as the…
We construct model wavefunctions for the half-filled Landau level parameterized by "composite fermion occupation-number configurations" in a two-dimensional momentum space which correspond to a Fermi sea with particle-hole excitations. When these correspond to a weakly-excited Fermi sea, they have large overlap with wavefunctions obtained by exact diagonalization of lowest-Landau-level electrons interacting with a Coulomb interaction, allowing exact states to be identified with quasiparticle configurations. We then formulate a many-body version of the single-particle Berry phase for adiabatic …
We investigate the transport properties of a correlated metal within dynamical mean field theory. Canonical Fermi liquid behavior emerges only below a very low temperature scale $T_{FL}$. Surprisingly the quasiparticle scattering rate follows a quadratic temperature dependence up to much higher temperatures and crosses over to saturated behavior around a temperature scale $T_{sat}$. We identify these quasiparticles as constituents of the hidden Fermi liquid. The non-Fermi liquid transport above $T_{FL}$, in particular the linear-in-$T$ resistivity, is shown to be a result of a strongly tempera…
Nematicity in quantum Hall systems has been experimentally well established at excited Landau levels. The mechanism of the symmetry breaking, however, is still unknown. Pomeranchuk instability of Fermi liquid parameter $F_{\ell} \le -1$ in the angular momentum $\ell=2$ channel has been argued to be the relevant mechanism, yet there are no definitive theoretical proofs. Here we calculate, using the variational Monte Carlo technique, Fermi liquid parameters $F_\ell$ of the composite fermion Fermi liquid with a finite layer width. We consider $F_{\ell}$ in different Landau levels $n=0,1,2$ as a f…
Hund's coupling is shown to generally favor, in a doped half-filled Mott insulator, an increase in the compressibility culminating in a Fermi-liquid instability towards phase separation. The largest effect is found about the frontier between an ordinary and an orbitally-decoupled ("Hund's") metal. The increased compressibility implies an enhancement of quasiparticle scattering, thus favoring other possible symmetry breakings. This physics is shown to happen in simulations of the 122 Fe-based superconductors, possibly implying the relevance of this mechanism in the enhancement of the the critic…
According to Landau's Fermi liquid theory, the main properties of the quasiparticle excitations of an electron gas are embodied in the effective mass $m^*$, which determines the energy of a single quasiparticle, and the Landau interaction function, which indicates how the energy of a quasiparticle is modified by the presence of other quasiparticles. This simple paradigm underlies most of our current understanding of the physical and chemical behavior of metallic systems. The quasiparticle effective mass of the three-dimensional homogeneous electron gas has been the subject of theoretical contr…
We measure weak quasiparticle tunneling across a constriction in the second Landau level. At $ν$ = 7/3, 8/3 and 5/2, comparison of temperature and DC bias dependence to weak tunneling theory allows extracting parameters that describe the edges' quasiparticle excitations. At $ν$ = 8/3, our results are well described by a particle-hole conjugate Laughlin state, but not compatible with proposed non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations. For $ν$ = 5/2, our measurements are in good agreement with previous experiments and favor the Abelian (3,3,1) or (1,1,3)-states. At these filling factors, we further …
We report a polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy study of the orbital dependence of the quasiparticles properties in the prototypical multi-band Fermi liquid Sr\textsubscript{2}RuO\textsubscript{4}. We show that the quasiparticle scattering rate displays $ω^{2}$ dependence as expected for a Fermi liquid. Besides, we observe a clear polarization-dependence in the energy and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass, with the $d_{xz/yz}$ orbital derived quasiparticles showing significantly more robust Fermi liquid properties than the $d_{xy}$ orbital derived ones. …
