We study the intrinsic effects of dimensional reduction on the transport equation of a perfectly two-dimensional Landau-Fermi liquid. By employing the orthogonality condition on the 2D analog of the Fourier-Legendre expansion, we find that the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of the fermionic system differ from its three-dimensional counterpart, with the latter changing drastically. Specifically, the modified Landau-Silin kinetic equation is heavily dependent on the solution of a non-trivial contour integral specific to the 2D liquid. We find the solution to this integral and its generalizations, effectively reducing the problem of solving for the collective excitations of a collisonless two-dimensional Landau-Fermi liquid to solving for the roots of some high-degree polynomial. This analysis ultimately lays the mathematical foundation for the exploration of atypical behavior in the non-equilibrium properties of two-dimensional fermionic liquids in the context of the Landau quasiparticle paradigm.
We study the Ginsburg-Landau expansion for the non-Fermi model proposed by Anderson. We analyze the deviations of the main properties of a non-Fermi superconductor from the isotropic s-wave bidimensiona superconductor.
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
Motivated by recent experiments in the Kitaev honeycomb lattice, Kondo insulators, and the "Luttinger's theorem-violating" Fermi liquid phase of the underdoped cuprates, we extend the theoretical machinery of Landau-Fermi liquid theory to a system of itinerant, interacting Majorana-like particles. Building upon a previously introduced model of "nearly self-conjugate" fermionic polarons, a Landau-Majorana kinetic equation is introduced to describe the collective modes and Fermi surface instabilities in a fluid of particles whose fermionic degrees of freedom obey the Majorana reality condition. …
We calculate the Landau interaction function f(k,k') for the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model on the square lattice using second and higher order perturbation theory. Within the Landau-Fermi liquid framework we discuss the behavior of spin and charge susceptibilities as function of the onsite interaction and band filling. In particular we analyze the role of elastic umklapp processes as driving force for the anisotropic reduction of the compressibility on parts of the Fermi surface.
One of the most successful theories of a non-Fermi liquid metallic state is the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) theory of the half-filled Landau level. In this paper, we study continuous quantum phase transitions out of the CFL state and into a Landau Fermi liquid, in the limit of no disorder and fixed particle number. This transition can be induced by tuning the bandwidth of the Landau level relative to the interaction energy, for instance through an externally applied periodic potential. We find a transition to the Landau Fermi liquid through a gapless Mott insulator with a Fermi surface of neu…
Landau-Fermi liquid theory is conventionally believed to hold whenever the interacting single-particle density of states develops a $δ$-like component at the Fermi surface, which is associated with quasiparticles. Here we show that a microscopic justification can be actually achieved under more general circumstances, even in case coherent quasiparticles are totally missing and the interacting single-particle density of states vanishes at the chemical potential as consequence of a pole singularity in the self-energy.
We study Fermi liquids with a Fermi surface that lacks continuous rotational invariance, and in the presence of an arbitrary quartic interaction. We obtain the expressions of the generalized static susceptibilities that measure the linear response of a generic order parameter to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. We apply our formulae to the spin and charge susceptibilities. Based on the resulting expressions, we make a proposal for the definition of the Landau parameters in non-isotropic Fermi liquid.
Introducing both the Berry curvature and chiral anomaly into the Landau's Fermi-liquid theory, we investigate collective dynamics of Fermi-surface fluctuations and reveal their instabilities in an interacting Weyl metal phase with broken time reversal symmetry. Based on the Boltzmann-equation framework, we find criteria for the stability of the topological Fermi-liquid state as a function of forward scattering Landau's interaction parameters and the distance of a pair of Weyl points given by an external magnetic field. In addition to these instability criteria for general angular momentum chan…
We examine a two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a Fermi surface which touches the Umklapp surface first at the 4 points $(\pm π/2, \pm π/2)$ as the electron density is increased. Umklapp processes at the 4 patches near $(\pm π/2, \pmπ/2)$ lead the renormalization group equations to scale to strong coupling resembling the behavior of a 2-leg ladder at half-filling. The incompressible character of the fixed point causes a breakdown of Landau theory at these patches. A further increase in density spreads the incompressible regions so that the open Fermi surface shrinks to 4 disconnected segments. …
The failure of Landau-Fermi liquid theory is often considered a telltale sign of universal, scale-invariant behavior in the emergent field theory of interacting fermions. Nevertheless, there exist borderline cases where weak scale invariance coupled with particle-hole asymmetry can coexist with the Landau quasiparticle paradigm. In this letter, I show explicitly that a Landau-Fermi liquid can exist for weak power-law scaling of the retarded Green's function. Such an exotic variant of the traditional Fermi liquid, although exhibiting a finite quasiparticle weight and large quasiparticle lifetim…
We study the momentum distribution function n(k) in the 2D t-J model on small clusters by exact diagonalization. We show that n(k) can be decomposed systematically into two components with Bosonic and Fermionic doping dependence. The Bosonic component originates from the incoherent motion of holes and has no significance for the low energy physics. For the Fermionic component we exlicitely perform the one-to-one Landau mapping between the low lying eigenstates of the t-J model clusters and those of an equivalent system of spin-1/2 quasiparticles. This mapping allows to extract the quasiparticl…
Nematicity in quantum Hall systems has been experimentally well established at excited Landau levels. The mechanism of the symmetry breaking, however, is still unknown. Pomeranchuk instability of Fermi liquid parameter $F_{\ell} \le -1$ in the angular momentum $\ell=2$ channel has been argued to be the relevant mechanism, yet there are no definitive theoretical proofs. Here we calculate, using the variational Monte Carlo technique, Fermi liquid parameters $F_\ell$ of the composite fermion Fermi liquid with a finite layer width. We consider $F_{\ell}$ in different Landau levels $n=0,1,2$ as a f…
We analyse the low-energy physics of nearly ferromagnetic metals in two spatial dimensions using the functional renormalization group technique. We find a new low-energy fixed point, at which the fermionic (electron-like) excitations are non-Fermi-liquid ($z_f = 13/10$) and the magnetic fluctuations exhibit an anomalous Landau damping whose rate vanishes as $Γ_{\bf q} \sim \vert {\bf q} \vert^{3/5}$ in the low-$\vert {\bf q} \vert$ limit. We discuss this renormalization of the Landau-damping exponent, which is the major novel prediction of our work, and highlight the possible link between that…
We study the effects of spin-antisymmetric interactions on the stability of a Landau-Fermi liquid on the square lattice, using the generalized Pomeranchuk method for two-dimensional lattice systems. In particular, we analyze interactions that could induce instabilities of the so called spin-split type, that is when spin-up and spin-down Fermi surfaces are displaced with respect to each other. The phase space is studied as a function of the strength of the interaction $V$, the electron chemical potential $μ$ and an external magnetic field $h$. We find that such interactions produce in general a…
Non-fermi liquid and unconventional quantum critical points (QCP) with strong fractionalization are two exceptional phenomena beyond the classic condensed matter doctrines, both of which could occur in strongly interacting quantum many-body systems. This work demonstrates that using a controlled method one can construct a non-Fermi liquid within a considerable energy window based on the unique physics of unconventional QCPs. We will focus on the "nearly-marginal non-Fermi liquid", defined as a state whose fermion self-energy scales as $Σ_f(i ω) \sim i \mathrm{sgn}(ω)|ω|^α$ with $α$ close to $1…
We apply the finite-temperature renormalization-group (RG) to a model based on an effective action with a short-range repulsive interaction and a rotation invariant Fermi surface. The basic quantities of Fermi liquid theory, the Landau function and the scattering vertex, are calculated as fixed points of the RG flow in terms of the effective action's interaction function. The classic derivations of Fermi liquid theory, which apply the Bethe-Salpeter equation and amount to summing direct particle-hole ladder diagrams, neglect the zero-angle singularity in the exchange particle-hole loop. As a c…
We consider the interaction-driven Mott transition at zero temperature from the viewpoint of microscopic Fermi liquid theory. To this end, we derive an exact expression for the Landau parameters within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approximation to the single-band Hubbard model. At the Mott transition the symmetric and the anti-symmetric Landau parameter diverge. The vanishing compressibility at the Mott transition directly implies the divergence of the forward scattering amplitude in the charge sector, which connects the proximity of the Mott phase to a tendency towards phase separat…
It is shown how Luttinger liquids may be studied using sea-bosons. The main advantage of the sea-boson method is its ability to provide information about short-wavelength physics in addition to the asymptotics and is naturally generalisable to more than one dimension. In this article, we solve the Luttinger model and the Calogero-Sutherland model, the latter in the weak-coupling limit. The anomalous exponent we obtain in the former case is identical to the one obtained by Mattis and Lieb. We also apply this method to solve the two-dimensional analog of the Luttinger model and show that the sys…
We report optical measurements demonstrating that the low-energy relaxation rate ($1/τ$) of the conduction electrons in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ obeys scaling relations for its frequency ($ω$) and temperature ($T$) dependence in accordance with Fermi-liquid theory. In the thermal relaxation regime, $1/τ\propto (\hbarω)^2 + (pπ\kB T)^2$ with $p=2$, and $ω/T$ scaling applies. Many-body electronic structure calculations using dynamical mean-field theory confirm the low-energy Fermi-liquid scaling, and provide quantitative understanding of the deviations from Fermi-liquid behavior at higher energy and temper…
We construct explicit lowest-Landau-level wave functions for the composite-fermion Fermi sea and its low energy excitations following a recently developed approach [Pu, Wu and Jain, Phys. Rev. B 96, 195302 (2018)] and demonstrate them to be very accurate representations of the Coulomb eigenstates. We further ask how the Berry phase associated with a closed loop around the Fermi circle, predicted to be $π$ in a Dirac composite fermion theory satisfying particle-hole symmetry [D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)], is affected by Landau level mixing. For this purpose, we consider a simple mo…
Landau's phenomenological theory of Fermi liquids is a fundamental paradigm in many-body physics that has been remarkably successful in explaining the properties of a wide range of interacting fermion systems, such as liquid helium-3, nuclear matter, and electrons in metals. The d-dimensional boundaries of (d+1)-dimensional topological phases of matter such as quantum Hall systems and topological insulators provide new types of many-fermion systems that are topologically distinct from conventional d-dimensional many-fermion systems. We construct a phenomenological Landau theory for the two-dim…
We generalize the Landau levels of two-dimensional Dirac fermions to three dimensions and above with the full rotational symmetry. Similarly to the two-dimensional case, there exists a branch of zero energy Landau levels of fractional fermion modes for the massless Dirac fermions. The spectra of other Landau levels distribute symmetrically with respect to the zero energy scaling with the square root of the Landau-level indices. This mechanism is a nonminimal coupling of Dirac fermions to the background fields. This high dimensional relativistic Landau-level problem is a square-root problem of …
In this paper we study the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation for Fermi liquid superconductors with strong Landau interactions $F_0$ and $F_1$. We show that Landau interactions renormalize two parameters entering the GL equation leading to renormalization of superfluid density and separation of length and energy scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations. The separation of energy/length scales for amplitude and phase fluctuations in term leads to unconventional (2D) KT transition and vortex liquid phase. Application of the GL equation to describe underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates is being discussed.
We present a theory of spontaneous Fermi surface deformations for half-filled Landau levels (filling factors of the form $ν=2n+1/2$). We assume the half-filled level to be in a compressible, Fermi liquid state with a circular Fermi surface. The Landau level projection is incorporated via a modified effective electron-electron interaction and the resulting band structure is described within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We regulate the infrared divergences in the theory and probe the intrinsic tendency of the Fermi surface to deform through Pomeranchuk instabilities. We find that the correspo…
One challenge in contemporary condensed matter physics is to understand unconventional electronic physics beyond the paradigm of Landau Fermi-liquid theory. Here, we present a perspective that posits that most such examples of unconventional electronic physics stem from restrictions on the degrees of freedom of quantum electrons in Landau Fermi liquids. Since the degrees of freedom are deeply connected to the system's symmetries and topology, these restrictions can thus be realized by external constraints or by interaction-driven processes via the following mechanisms: (i) symmetry breaking, (…
A lattice model of spinless interacting electrons is used to formulate the Landau theory of the Fermi liquid to electron glass quantum phase transition. We demonstrate that the presence of additional random site energies does not affect the character of the transition, once the replica symmetry breaking is considered self-consistently at the mean-field level. Inside the glass phase, the low temperature conductivity assumes a non-Fermi liquid ~ T^{3/2} form, in agreement with recent experiments.
We study the Fermi liquid properties of the cold atomic dipolar Fermi gases with the explicit dipolar anisotropy using perturbative approaches. Due to the explicit dipolar anisotropy, Fermi surfaces exhibit distortions of the $d_{r^2-3z^2}$-type in three dimensions and of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-type in two dimensions. The fermion self-energy, effective mass, and Fermi velocity develop the same anisotropy at the Hartree-Fock level proportional to the interaction strength. The Landau interaction parameters in the isotropic Fermi liquids become the tri-diagonal Landau interaction matrices in the dipol…
Topological fermions as excitations from multi-degenerate Fermi points have been attracting increasing interests in condensed matter physics. They are characterized by topological charges, and magnetic fields are usually applied in experiments for their detection. Here we present an index theorem that reveals the intrinsic connection between the topological charge of a Fermi point and the in-gap modes in the Landau band structure. The proof is based on mapping fermions under magnetic fields to a topological insulator whose topological number is exactly the topological charge of the Fermi point…
We study the field theory dual to a charged gravitational background in which the low temperature entropy scales linearly with the temperature. We exhibit the existence of a sound mode which is described by hydrodynamics, even at energies much larger than the temperature, and explain how this, and other properties of the field theory, are consistent with those of a (3+1)-dimensional Landau Fermi liquid, finely tuned to the Pomeranchuk critical point. We also discuss how one could engineer a higher-derivative gravitational Lagrangian which reproduces the correct low temperature behavior of shea…
We consider the behavior of strongly correlated electron liquid in high-temperature superconductors within the framework of the fermion condensation model. We show that at low temperatures the normal state recovered by the application of a magnetic field larger than the critical field can be viewed as the Landau Fermi liquid induced by the magnetic field. In this state, the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Korringa law are held and the elementary excitations are the Landau Fermi Liquid quasiparticles. Contrary to what might be expected from the Landau theory, the effective mass of quasiparticles de…
Majorana fermions were originally proposed as elementary particles acting as their own antiparticles. In recent years, it has become clear that Majorana fermions can instead be realized in condensed-matter systems as emergent quasiparticles, a situation often accompanied by topological order. Here we propose a physical system which realizes Landau levels - highly degenerate single-particle states usually resulting from an orbital magnetic field acting on charged particles - for Majorana fermions. This is achieved in a variant of a quantum spin system due to Kitaev which is distorted by triaxia…
The physics of the state at even denominator fractional fillings of Landau levels depends on the Coulomb pseudopotentials, and produces, in different GaAs Landau levels, a composite fermion Fermi sea, a stripe phase, or, possibly, a paired composite fermion state. We consider here even denominator fractions in graphene, which has different pseudopotentials as well as a possible four fold degeneracy of each Landau level. We test various composite fermion Fermi sea wave functions (fully polarized, SU(2) singlet, SU(4) singlet) as well as the paired composite fermion states in the n=0 and $n=1$ L…
We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition…
A continuous unitary transformation is introduced which realizes Landau's mapping of the elementary excitations (quasi-particles) of an interacting Fermi liquid system to those of the system without interaction. The conservation of the number of quasi-particles is important. The transformation is performed numerically for a one-dimensional system, i.e. the worst case for a Fermi liquid approach. Yet evidence for Luttinger liquid behavior is found. Such an approach may open a route to a unified description of Fermi and Luttinger liquids on all energy scales.
A quasiparticle pattern advanced in Landau's first article on Fermi liquid theory is adapted to elucidate the properties of a class of strongly correlated Fermi systems characterized by a Lifshitz phase diagram featuring a quantum critical point (QCP) where the density of states diverges. The necessary condition for stability of the Landau Fermi Liquid state is shown to break down in such systems, triggering a cascade of topological phase transitions that lead, without symmetry violation, to states with multi-connected Fermi surfaces. The end point of this evolution is found to be an exception…
We study the dynamics of the half-filled zeroth Landau level of Dirac fermions using mirror symmetry, a supersymmetric duality between certain pairs of $2+1$-dimensional theories. We show that the half-filled zeroth Landau level of a pair of Dirac fermions is dual to a pair of Fermi surfaces of electrically-neutral composite fermions, coupled to an emergent gauge field. Thus, we use supersymmetry to provide a derivation of flux attachment and the emergent Fermi liquid-like state for the lowest Landau level of Dirac fermions. We find that in the dual theory the Coulomb interaction induces a dyn…
The electron-electron interaction in the Landau levels of bilayer graphene is markedly different from that of conventional semiconductors such as GaAs. We show that in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, in the orbital which is dominated by the non-relativistic second Landau level wave function, by tuning the magnetic field a topological quantum phase transition from an Abelian composite fermion to a non-Abelian parton fractional quantum Hall state can be induced at filling factors $1/2, ~2/5$ and $3/7$. The parton states host exotic anyons that can potentially be utilized to store an…
The electromagnetic properties of a Fermi liquid superconductor with singular Landau parameter $F_{1s}\to-1$, corresponding to a state with marginal spin-charge separation (MSCS) is analyzed in this paper. We show that the MSCS state describes a strongly phase-disordered superconductor which is a diamagnetic metal with Drude-like optical conductivity. The phase diagram and electromagnetic properties of the MSCS state is found to be in qualitative agreement with what is observed in the pseudo-gap phase of (underdoped) High-$T_c$ cuprates. We predicted that vortices with {\em un-quantized} magne…
There is increasing experimental evidence for fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν=2+3/8$. Modeling it as a system of composite fermions, we study the problem of interacting composite fermions by a number of methods. In our variational study, we consider the Fermi sea, the Pfaffian paired state, and bubble and stripe phases of composite fermions, and find that the Fermi sea state is favored for a wide range of transverse thickness. However, when we incorporate interactions between composite fermions through composite-fermion diagonalization on systems with up to 25 composite fer…
In this paper we generalize slave-boson mean-field theory for $t-J$ model to the time-dependent regime, and derive transport equations for $t-J$ model, both in the normal and superconducting states. By eliminating the boson and constraint fields exactly in the equations of motion we obtain a set of transport equations for fermions which have the same form as Landau transport equations for normal Fermi liquid and Fermi liquid superconductor, respectively with all Landau parameters explicity given. Our theory can be viewed as a refined version of U(1) Gauge theory where all lattice effects are r…
The paradigm of Landau's Fermi liquid theory has been challenged with the finding of a strongly interacting Fermi liquid that cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting system. A spin-1 two-channel Kondo impurity with anisotropy D has a quantum phase transition between two topologically different Fermi liquids with a peak (dip) in the Fermi level for D < Dc (D > Dc). Extending this theory to general multi-orbital problems with finite magnetic field, we reinterpret in a unified and consistent fashion several experimental studies of iron phthalocyanine molecules on Au(111) that were …
We describe a technique which allows a direct measurement of the relative Fermi energy in an electron system using a double layer structure, where graphene is one of the two layers. We illustrate this method by probing the Fermi energy as a function of density in a graphene monolayer, at zero and in high magnetic fields. This technique allows us to determine the Fermi velocity, Landau level spacing, and Landau level broadening in graphene. We find that the N=0 Landau level broadening is larger by comparison to the broadening of upper and lower Landau levels.
For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi su…
We consider a holographic theory as a Ginzberg-Landau theory working for strongly interacting system near the quantum critical point: we take the bulk matter field $Φ^I(r,x)$, the dual of the fermion bilinear, as the order parameter. We calculate and classify the fermion spectral functions in the presence of such orders. Depending on the symmetry, we found spectral features like the gap, pseudo-gap, flat disk bands and the Fermi-arc connecting the two Dirac cones, which are familiar in Dirac material and Kondo lattice. Many of above features are associated with the zero modes whose presence is…
It is shown that the main features of the phase diagram for high Tc superconductivity can be calculated as a function of doping in a simple, essentially unique non-Landau/Fermi liquid with quartic interactions. The phase diagram depends on a single parameter 0<gamma<1 determined by the strength of the interaction at short distances. A new d-wave gap equation has solutions that fall under a superconducting dome, which terminates at the renormalization group fixed point. Optimal doping is estimated to occur just below 3/2 π^2. The overall scale for Tc is set by the recently measured universal no…
We investigate broken rotational symmetry (BRS) states at half-filling of the valence Landau level (LL). We generalize Rezayi-Read's (RR) composite fermion (CF) trial wavefunctions to include anisotropic coupling of the flux quanta to electrons, thus generating a nematic order in the underlying CF liquid. Using the Fermi hypernetted-chain (FHNC) method which readily gives results in the thermodynamic limit, we determine in detail the properties of these states. By using the anisotropic pair distribution and static structure functions we determine the correlation energy and find that, as expect…
In strongly correlated materials, quasiparticle excitations can carry fractional quantum numbers. An intriguing possibility is the formation of fractionalized, charge-neutral fermions, e.g., spinons and fermionic excitons, that result in neutral Fermi surfaces and Landau quantization in an insulator. While previous experiments in quantum spin liquids, topological Kondo insulators, and quantum Hall systems have hinted at charge-neutral Fermi surfaces, evidence for their existence remains far from conclusive. Here we report experimental observation of Landau quantization in a two dimensional (2D…
