For interacting 2D electrons in the presence of magnetic field at half filling, the system forms a `composite Fermi liquid(CFL)' with emergent Fermi surface and exhibits metallic behavior, based on the standard Halperin, Lee, and Read(HLR) field theory. Recently, Son introduces a composite Dirac theory as the low energy effective description of Half-filled Landau Level. Such theory exhibits particle-hole symmetry and the underlying composite Fermi surface displays a robust $π$ Berry phase. In this paper, we start from the bilayer Half-filled Landau Level system where the two composite Fermi surface acquires interlayer coherence and forms bonding/anti-bonding composite fermi sea. The corresponding interlayer coherent composite Fermi liquid(ICCFL) phase provides a straightforward landscape to verify the Dirac nature in Son's theory and extract the hidden Berry phase structure of the composite Fermi surface. The ICCFL phase contains two Fermi surfaces which are detached in most regions but adhesive at two hot spots. Such nematic structure is a consequence of the Berry phase encoded in the Dirac Fermi surface which is absent in HLR theory. Due to the nematicity in ICCFL, the system supports half-quantum vortex with deconfined $\fracπ{2}$ gauge flux and the phase transition toward ICCFL contains a Lifshitz criticality with $z=3$ dynamical exponent. In addition, the exciton order parameter carries topological spin number so the ICCFL contains a unique Wen-Zee term which connects EM response with the background geometry curvature.
We develop a vortex metal theory for partial filled Landau Level at $ν=\frac{1}{2n}$, whose ground state contains a composite Fermi surface(FS) formed by the vortex of electrons. In the projected Landau Level limit, the composite Fermi surface contains $\frac{-π}{n}$ Berry phase. Such fractional Berry phase is a consequence of LL projection which produces the GMP guiding center algebra and embellishes an anomalous velocity to the equation of motion for the vortex metal. Further, we investigate a particle-hole symmetric bilayer system with $ν_1=\frac{1}{2n}$ and $ν_2=1-\frac{1}{2n}$ at each lay…
We construct model wavefunctions for the half-filled Landau level parameterized by "composite fermion occupation-number configurations" in a two-dimensional momentum space which correspond to a Fermi sea with particle-hole excitations. When these correspond to a weakly-excited Fermi sea, they have large overlap with wavefunctions obtained by exact diagonalization of lowest-Landau-level electrons interacting with a Coulomb interaction, allowing exact states to be identified with quasiparticle configurations. We then formulate a many-body version of the single-particle Berry phase for adiabatic …
The half filled Landau level is expected to be approximately particle-hole symmetric, which requires an extension of the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory of the compressible state observed at this filling. Recent work indicates that, when particle-hole symmetry is preserved, the composite Fermions experience a quantized $π$-Berry phase upon winding around the composite Fermi-surface, analogous to Dirac fermions at the surface of a 3D topological insulator. In contrast, the effective low energy theory of the composite fermion liquid originally proposed by HLR lacks particle-hole symmetry and has …
We study the interplay of particle-hole symmetry and fermion-vortex duality in multicomponent half-filled Landau levels, such as quantum Hall gallium arsenide bilayers and graphene. For the $ν{=}1/2{+}1/2$ bilayer, we show that particle-hole-symmetric interlayer Cooper pairing of composite fermions leads to precisely the same phase as the electron exciton condensate realized in experiments. This equivalence is easily understood by applying the recent Dirac fermion formulation of $ν{=}1/2$ to two components. It can also be described by Halperin-Lee-Read composite fermions undergoing interlayer …
We report interlayer electronic transport in CaMnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Quantum oscillations and angular magnetoresistance suggest coherent electronic conduction and valley polarized conduction of Dirac states. Small cyclotron mass, large mobility of carriers and nontrivial Berry's phase are consistent with the presence of Dirac fermions on the side wall of the warped cylindrical Fermi surface. Similar to SrMnBi$_{2}$ that features an anisotropic Dirac cone, our results suggest that magnetic field-induced changes in the interlayer conduction are also present in layered bismuth-based materia…
We derive the definition of the Berry phase for the adiabatic transport of a composite fermion (CF) in a half-filled composite Fermi-liquid (CFL). It is found to be different from that adopted in previous investigations by Geraedts et al. For the standard CFL wave function, we analytically show that the Berry curvature is uniformly distributed in the momentum space. For the Jain-Kamilla wave function, we numerically show that its Berry curvature has a continuous distribution inside the Fermi sea and vanishes outside. We conclude that the CF with respect to both the microscopic wave-functions i…
We address the question of whether fractionally filled bands with a nontrivial Chern index in zero external field could also exhibit a Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). Numerical works suggest this is possible. Analytic treatments are complicated by a non-vanishing band dispersion and a non-constant Berry flux. We propose embedding the Chern band in an auxiliary lowest Landau level (LLL) and then using composite fermions. We find some states which have no analogue in the continuum, and dependent on the interplay between interactions and the lattice. The approach extends to two-dimensional…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to extract the band dispersion and the Fermi surface of BaCu$_2$As$_2$ and $α$-BaCu$_2$Sb$_2$. While the Cu $3d$ bands in both materials are located around 3.5 eV below the Fermi level, the low-energy photoemission intensity mainly comes from As $4p$ states, suggesting a completely filled Cu $3d$ shell. The splitting of the As $3d$ core levels and the lack of pronounced three-dimensionality in the measured band structure of BaCu$_2$As$_2$ indicate a surface state likely induced by the cleavage of this material in the collapsed tetragonal phase, …
Coulomb drag between two parallel two dimensional electron gases has been measured at high magnetic fields in samples with two different layer spacings. As the layer filling factor deviates from nu=1/2, we find that the magnitude of the drag is enhanced quadratically with Delta nu = nu - 1/2, and the curvature of the enhancement is insensitive to both the sign of Delta nu and the spacing between the layers. Our results suggest that the enhancement is not due to non-perturbative interlayer correlations.
We discuss monolayer and bilayer quantum Hall systems in which each layer is a half-filled Landau level (LL) system. In the mean field approximation of the Son's formalism there is a common pairing structure that underlines the possibilities for paired ground states in both systems. We argue that the particle-hole (PH) Pfaffian state in the (particle-hole symmetric) half-filled LL of a monolayer, and analogous state in the PH symmetric bilayer (in which each layer is half-filled LL) can be considered as {\em critical states} i.e. states that cannot describe a phase under PH symmetry. We point …
Half-filled Landau levels admit the theoretically powerful fermion-vortex duality but longstanding puzzles remain in their experimental realization as $ν_T=1$ quantum Hall bilayers, further complicated by Zheng et al's recent numerical discovery of an unknown phase at intermediate layer spacing. Here we propose that half-filled quantum Hall bilayers ($ν_T=1$) at intermediate values of the interlayer distance $d/\ell_B$ enter a phase with \textit{paired exciton condensation}. This phase shows signatures analogous to the condensate of interlayer excitons (electrons bound to opposite-layer holes)…
The study of topological magnetic excitations has attracted widespread attention in the past few years. In this thesis, I have studied some examples of novel topological magnonic phases/phenomena in low-dimensional quantum magnets. The first chapter motivates the research based on the research gap in this field of study. The second chapter is written to make the thesis self-sufficient and the concepts are explained through examples. In the second chapter, the following formalisms and physical observables are described: Holstein-Primakoff, bond operator, Schwinger boson, Bogoliubov-Valatin, Gro…
Employing a combination of functional renormalization group calculations and projective determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the Hubbard model on the square lattice bilayer at half filling. From this combined analysis, we obtain a comprehensive account on the ground state phase diagram with respect to the extent of the system's metallic and (antiferromagnetically ordered) Mott-insulating as well as band-insulating regions. By means of an unbiased functional renormalization group approach, we exhibit the antiferromagnetic Mott-insulating state as the relevant instability of…
We consider an efficient scheme to simulate fermionic Hubbard models with nonlocal density-density interactions in two dimensions, based on bond-centered auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. The simulations are shown to be sign-problem free within a finite, restricted parameter range. Using this approach, we first study the Hubbard model on the half-filled square lattice bilayer, including an interlayer repulsion term in addition to the local repulsion, and present the ground state phase diagram within the accessible parameter region. Starting from the antiferromagnetically ordered state in th…
A set of recent results indicates that fractionally filled bands of Chern insulators in two dimensions support fractional quantum Hall states analogous to those found in fractionally filled Landau levels. We provide an understanding of these results by examining the algebra of Chern band projected density operators. We find that this algebra closes at long wavelengths and for constant Berry curvature, whereupon it is isomorphic to the W-Infinity algebra of lowest Landau level projected densities first identified by Girvin, MacDonald and Platzman [Phys. Rev. B 33, 2481 (1986).] For Hamiltonians…
In this work, we investigate the nature of the fractional quantum Hall state in the 1/3-filled second Landau level (SLL) at filling factor $ν=7/3$ (and 8/3 in the presence of the particle-hole symmetry) via exact diagonalization in both torus and spherical geometries. Specifically, we compute the overlap between the exact 7/3 ground state and various competing states including (i) the Laughlin state, (ii) the fermionic Haffnian state, (iii) the antisymmetrized product state of two composite fermion seas at 1/6 filling, and (iv) the particle-hole (PH) conjugate of the $Z_4$ parafermion state. A…
We present a theory of the isotropic-nematic quantum phase transition in the composite Fermi liquid arising in half-filled Landau levels. We show that the quantum phase transition between the isotropic and the nematic phase is triggered by an attractive quadrupolar interaction between electrons, as in the case of conventional Fermi liquids. We derive the theory of the nematic state and of the phase transition. This theory is based on the flux attachment procedure which maps an electron liquid in half-filled Landau levels into the composite Fermi liquid close to a nematic transition. We show th…
We consider a half-filled generalized Hubbard chain with electron-hole symmetric correlated hopping and on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsions U and V respectively. In addition to the insulating charge- and spin-density wave phases for large V and U respectively, we identify a phase with dominant superconducting correlations at large distances for small U and V. Using two Berry phases (one associated to the charge and the other to the spin degrees of freedom) as discrete order parameters, we construct a phase diagram for the three thermodynamic phases.
We study the half filled Hubbard chain including next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. The model has three phases: one insulating phase with dominant spin-density-wave correlations at large distances (SDWI), another phase with dominant spin-dimer correlations or dimerized insulator (DI), and a third one in which long distance correlations indicate singlet superconductivity (SS). The boundaries of the SDWI are accurately determined numerically through a crossing of excited energy levels equivalent to the jump in the spin Berry phase. The DI-SS boundary is studied using several indicators like cor…
The ground state phase diagram of the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model in a bilayer is investigated using cluster dynamical mean field theory. For weak to intermediate values of Coulomb repulsion $U$, the system undergoes a transition from a Mott insulating phase to a metallic phase and then onto a band insulating phase as the interlayer hopping is increased. In the strong coupling case, the model exhibits a direct crossover from a Mott insulating phase to a band insulating phase. These results are robust with respect to the presence or absence of magnetic order.
Composite fermions (CFs) are the particles underlying the novel phenomena observed in partially filled Landau levels. Both microscopic wave functions and semi-classical dynamics suggest that a CF is a dipole consisting of an electron and a double $2h/e$ quantum vortex, and its motion is subject to a Berry curvature that is uniformly distributed in the momentum space. Based on the picture, we study the electromagnetic response of composite fermions. We find that the response in the long-wavelength limit has a form identical to that of the Dirac CF theory. To obtain the result, we show that the …
We reveal a proximity effect between a topological band (Chern) insulator described by a Haldane model and spin-polarized Dirac particles of a graphene layer. Coupling weakly the two systems through a tunneling term in the bulk, the topological Chern insulator induces a gap and an opposite Chern number on the Dirac particles at half-filling resulting in a sign flip of the Berry curvature at one Dirac point. We study different aspects of the bulk-edge correspondence and present protocols to observe the evolution of the Berry curvature as well as two counter-propagating (protected) edge modes wi…
We have used density functional theory calculations based on the projector augmented wave method to investigate the electronic structure of Au-incorporated anatase TiO$_2$(001) surface. Due to the coordination with several level oxygens, Au atoms can be encapsulated inside TiO$_2$ slab. Au is adsorbed over the surface Ti--O bond, so called the bridge site on anatase TiO$_2$(001)--1$\times$1 surface. However, for 0.25 ML coverage, Au atoms energetically prefer to stay at 0.64 Å above the midpoint of the two surface oxygens which is significantly closer to the surface layer. When implanted insid…
We study the coupled quantum Hall bilayers each at half-filled first excited Landau levels with varying the layer distance. Based on numerical exact diagonalization on torus, we identify two distinct phases separated by a critical layer distance $d_c$. From $d_c$ to infinite layer distance, the topological phase is smoothly connected to a direct tensor product of two Moore-Read states, while the interlayer coherence emerges at $d<d_c$ characterized by the $xy$ easy-plane ferromagnetic energy spectra, gapless pseudospin excitations and the finite exciton superfluid stiffness, corresponding to t…
We perform an extensive exact diagonalization study of interaction driven insulators in spin- and valley-polarized moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene aligned with its hexagonal boron nitride substrate. In addition to previously reported fractional Chern insulator phases, we provide compelling evidence for competing charge-density-wave phases at multiple fractional fillings of a realistic single-band model. A thorough analysis at different interlayer hopping parameters, motivated by experimental variability, and the role of kinetic energy at various Coulomb interaction strengths highl…
Heavy fermion systems contain not only strong electron correlations, which promote a rich set of quantum phases, but also a large spin-orbit coupling, which tends to endow the electronic states a topological character. Kondo insulators are understood in terms of a lattice of local moments coupled to conduction electrons in a half-filled band, i.e., with a dense population of about one electron per unit cell. Here, we propose that a new class of Kondo insulator arises when the conduction-electron band is nearly empty ( or, equivalently, full ) . We demonstrated the effect through a honeycomb An…
The surface of a Weyl semimetal famously hosts an exotic topological metal that contains open Fermi arcs rather than closed Fermi surfaces. In this work, we show that the surface is also endowed with a feature normally associated with strongly interacting systems, namely, Luttinger arcs, defined as zeros of the electron Green's function. The Luttinger arcs connect surface projections of Weyl nodes of opposite chirality and form closed loops with the Fermi arcs when the Weyl nodes are undoped. Upon doping, the ends of the Fermi and Luttinger arcs separate and the intervening regions get filled …
We study the phase diagram of quantum Hall bilayer systems with total filing $ν_T=1/2+1/2$ of the lowest Landau level as a function of layer distances $d$. Based on numerical exact diagonalization calculations, we obtain three distinct phases, including an exciton superfluid phase with spontaneous interlayer coherence at small $d$, a composite Fermi liquid at large $d$, and an intermediate phase for $1.1<d/l_B<1.8$ ($l_B$ is the magnetic length). The transition from the exciton superfluid to the intermediate phase is identified by (i) a dramatic change in the Berry curvature of the ground stat…
