Strong quantum fluctuations in magnetic systems can create disordered quantum spin liquid phases of matter which are not predicted by classical physics. The complexity of the exotic phenomena on display in spin liquids has led to a great deal of theoretical and experimental interest. However, understanding the fundamental nature of the excitations in these systems remains challenging. In this work, we consider the Lifshitz quantum critical point in a two-dimensional frustrated $XY$ antiferromagnet. At this point, quantum fluctuations destroy long range order, leading to the formation of an algebraic Lifshitz spin liquid. We demonstrate that the bosonic magnon excitations are long-lived and well-defined in the Lifshitz spin liquid phase, though paradoxically, the dynamic structure factor has a broad non-Lorentzian frequency distribution with no single-particle weight. We resolve this apparent contradiction by showing that the Lifshitz spin liquid suffers from an infrared catastrophe: An external physical probe always excites an infinite number of arbitrarily low energy quasiparticles, which leads to significant radiative broadening of the spectrum.
Here we investigate antiferromagnetic Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$, a nonsymmorphic Zintl phase. Our electrical transport data show that Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$ is remarkably insulating and exhibits an exceptionally large negative magnetoresistance, which is consistent with the presence of magnetic polarons. From {\it ab initio} calculations, the paramagnetic state of Eu$_{5}$In$_{2}$Sb$_{6}$ is a topologically nontrivial semimetal within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), whereas an insulating state with trivial topological indices is obtained using a modified Becke-Johnson potential.…
With a mean field approach, the heavy Fermi liquid in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model is carefully considered in the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. As the ratio of the local Heisenberg superexchange coupling to the Kondo coupling increases, the Fermi surface structure changes dramatically. From the analysis of the ground state energy density, multiple Lifshitz type phase transitions occur at zero temperature.
Manganites are famous mostly for the colossal magnetoresistive effect, which involves the phase separation between ferromagnetic phase and charge-ordered CE-type antiferromagnetic phases. Furthermore, manganites contain some typical magnetic ferroelectrics, e.g. E-type antiferromagnetic $o$-HoMnO$_3$. Here we re-examined these zigzag-winding antiferromagnetic phases (CE-type and E-type antiferromagnets) from the topological perspective. Our theoretical analysis proved that the E-type phase is a weak topological insulator belonging to the $\mathbb{Z}$ class. In momentum space, we classify the s…
We investigate the ultrafast dynamics of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, a prototype material showing a Lifshitz-type transition as a function of temperature. In the paramagnetic metallic state, the photo-reflectivity shows a sub-picosecond relaxation, followed by a featureless small offset. In the antiferromagnetic state slightly below $T_N$, however, the photo-reflectivity resurges over hundreds of picoseconds, which goes beyond the usual realm of the effective-temperature model. Our observations are consistent with the Lifshitz phase transition of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ driven by the evolution of the local m…
We report occurrence of large magnetoresistance in lightly doped antiferromagnetic paraelectric EuTiO3. Reports of magnetoresistance in rare-earth titanates (RTiO3 oxides) are very scarce because they are highly insulating at low temperatures. EuTiO3 is an insulator at 2.5 K and 1% La3+ substitution for Eu2+ lowers the resistivity over five orders of magnitude at 2.5 K. It is shown that Eu0.99La0.01TiO3 which is antiferromagnetic below T= 5.43 K shows large magnetoresistance over a wide temperature. At 2.5 K, magnetoresistance is -42 % for H = 6 kOe and it increases to -75 % for H = 7 T. Even …
The heavy-Fermion liquid with short-range antiferromagnetic correlations is carefully considered in the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model. As the ratio of the local Heisenberg superexchange $J_{H}$ to the Kondo coupling $J_{K}$ increases, Lifshitz transitions are anticipated, where the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) of the heavy quasiparticles changes from a hole-like circle to four kidney-like pockets centered around $(π,π)$. In-between these two limiting cases, a first-order quantum phase transition is identified at $J_{H}/J_{K}=0.1055$ where a small circle begins to emerge …
We investigate the reconstruction of a Fermi surface, which is called a Lifshitz transition, in magnetically ordered phases of the periodic Anderson model on a square lattice with a finite Coulomb interaction between f electrons. We apply the variational Monte Carlo method to the model by using the Gutzwiller wavefunctions for the paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and charge-density-wave states. We find that an antiferromagnetic phase is realized around half-filling and a ferromagnetic phase is realized when the system is far away from half-filling. In both magnetic phases, Lifsh…
The $S=1/2$ square-lattice $J$-$Q$ model hosts a deconfined quantum phase transition between antiferromagnetic and dimerized (valence-bond solid) ground states. We here study two deformations of this model -- a term projecting staggered singlets as well as a modulation of the $J$ terms forming alternating "staircases" of strong and weak couplings. The first deformation preserves all lattice symmetries. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that it nevertheless introduces a second relevant field, likely by producing topological defects. The second deformation induces helical valence-bo…
We present temperature-dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on $La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MO_{3}$ ($x\sim0.33$) films with different degrees of biaxial strain. A depletion in normalized conductance around the Fermi level is observed both above and below the insulator-to-metal transition temperature $T_{MI}$, for weakly as well as highly-strained films. This pseudogap-like depletion globally narrows on cooling. The zero-bias conductance decreases on cooling in the insulating phase, reaches a minimum close to $T_{MI}$ and increases on cooling in the metallic phase, following the trend of m…
Magnetic and other unconventional electronic orders are discussed for heavy electrons. In addition to the ordinary Kondo lattice, we consider non-Kramers systems taking the two-channel Kondo lattice, and another lattice that consists of a singlet-triplet f2 configuration. The latter gives a scalar order with staggered sublattices of crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo singlets, which accounts for the observed order in PrFe4P12. In the two-channel Kondo lattice, an odd-frequency pairing is realized that becomes degenerate at half-filling with a composite order involving both localized an…
Antiferromagnetic quantum spin systems can exhibit a transition between collinear and spiral ground states, driven by frustration. Classically this is a smooth crossover and the crossover point is termed a Lifshitz point. Quantum fluctuations change the nature of the transition. In particular it has been argued previously that in the two-dimensional (2D) case a spin liquid (SL) state is developed in the vicinity of the Lifshitz point, termed a Lifshitz SL. In the present work, using a field theory approach, we solve the Lifshitz quantum phase transition problem for the 2D frustrated XY-model. …
We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and cl…

We propose a skyrmion liquid state for the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) phase in Ge-substituted YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$, where skyrmions form their Fermi surface, argued to result from the strongly coupled nature between skyrmions and itinerant electrons. The fermionized skyrmion theory identifies the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition with the Lifshitz transition, where the quantum critical point (QCP) is characterized by the dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$. Nonlocal interactions between skyrmions allow a critical line above the AF QCP, which originates from the Kondo-coupling effect with itinerant e…
Experiments in spintronics and magnonics operate with macroscopically large number of localized spins within ferromagnetic (F) or antiferromagnetic (AF) materials, so that their nonequilibrium dynamics is standardly described by the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation treating localized spins as classical vectors of fixed length. However, spin is a genuine quantum degree of freedom, and even though quantum effects become progressively less important for spin value $S>1$, they exist for all $S < \infty$. While this has motivated exploration of limitations/breakdown of the LL equation, by using exampl…
Three decades ago Ioffe and Larkin pointed out a generic mechanism for the formation of a gapped spin liquid. In the case when a classical two-dimensional (2D) frustrated Heisenberg magnet undergoes a Lifshitz transition between a collinear Néel phase and a spin spiral phase, quantum effects usually lead to the development of a spin-liquid phase sandwiched between the Néel and spin spiral phases. In the present work, using field theory techniques, we study properties of this universal spin liquid phase. We examine the phase diagram near the Lifshitz point and calculate the positions of critica…
An effective Hamiltonian describing fluctuation effects in the magnetic phases of the Hubbard model in terms of spinon excitations is derived. A comparison of spin-rotational Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson and Ribeiro-Wen dopon representations is performed. The quantum transition into the half-metallic ferromagnetic state with vanishing of spin-down Fermi surface is treated as the topological Lifshitz transition in the quasimomentum space. The itinerant-localized magnetism transitions and Mott transition in antiferromagnetic state are considered in the topological context. Related metal-insul…
The magnetoelectric coupling, i.e., cross-correlation between electric and magnetic orders, is a very desirable property to combine functionalities of materials for next-generation switchable devices. Multiferroics with spin-driven ferroelectricity presents such a mutual interaction concomitant with magneto- and electro-active excitations called electromagnons. TbMnO3 is a paradigmatic material in which two electromagnons have been observed in the cycloidal magnetic phase. However, their observation in TbMnO3 is restricted to the cycloidal spin phase and magnetic ground states that can support…
Theoretical Study of Half-Doped Models for Manganites: Fragility of the CE Phase with Disorder, Two Types of Colossal Magnetoresistances, and Charge-Ordered States for Electron-Doped Materials
Phase inhomogeneity of otherwise chemically homogenous electronic systems is an essential ingredient leading to fascinating functional properties, such as high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprates, colossal magnetoresistance in manganites, and giant electrostriction in relaxors. In these materials distinct phases compete and can coexist due to intertwined ordered parameters. Charge degrees of freedom play a fundamental role, although phase-separated ground states have been envisioned theoretically also for pure spin systems with geometrical frustration that serves as a source of phase competiti…
Fate of entanglement in magnetism under Lindbladian or non-Markovian dynamics and conditions for their transition to Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert classical dynamics
The phase diagrams of LaMnO$_3$ perovskites have been intensely studied due to the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) exhibited by compositions around the $\frac{3}{8}^{th}$ doping level. However, phase segregation between ferromagnetic (FM) metallic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating states, which itself is believed to be responsible for the colossal change in resistance under applied magnetic field, has prevented an atomistic-level understanding of the orbital ordered (OO) state at this doping level. Here, through the detailed crystallographic analysis of the phase diagram of a prototype s…
Recent neutron scattering measurements on the spinel CdCr2O4 revealed a rare example of helical magnetic order in geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The spin spiral characterized by an incommensurate wavevector Q = 2pi (0, delta, 1) with delta ~0.09 is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion. Here we conduct a systematic study on the magnetic ground state resulting from the interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and further neighbor exchange couplings, two of the most important mechanisms for stabilizing incommensurate spin orders. We compute the low-energy sp…
The electrical resistance, Hall resistance and thermoelectric power of the Ising-like antiferromagnet UIrSi3 were measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field. We have observed that the unequivocally different characters of first-order and second-order magnetic phase transitions lead to distinctly different magnetotransport properties in the neighborhood of corresponding critical temperatures and magnetic fields, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the electrical and Hall resistivity in the antiferromagnetic state, and the polarized and normal regimes of paramagnetic state a…
We use a non-equilibrium many-body theory that engages the elements of transient coherence, correlation, and nonlinearity to describe changes in the magnetic and electronic phases of strongly correlated systems induced by femtosecond nonlinear photoexcitation. Using a generalized tight--binding mean field approach based on Hubbard operators and including the coupling of the laser field, we describe a mechanism for simultaneous insulator--to--metal and anti-- to ferro--magnetic transition to a transient state triggered by non-thermal ultrafast spin and charge coupled excitations. We demontrate,…
Within a mean-field approximation, the ground state and finite temperature phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model have been carefully studied as functions of the Kondo coupling $J$ and the conduction electron concentration $n_{c}$. In addition to the conventional hybridization between local moments and itinerant electrons, a staggered hybridization is proposed to characterize the interplay between the antiferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect. As a result, a heavy fermion antiferromagnetic phase is obtained and separated from the pure antiferromagnetic ordered phase …
Quantum magnets admit more than one classical limit and $N$-level systems with strong single-ion anisotropy are expected to be described by a classical approximation based on SU($N$) coherent states. Here we test this hypothesis by modeling finite temperature inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data of the effective spin-one antiferromagnet \bfso{}. The measured dynamic structure factor is calculated with a generalized Landau-Lifshitz dynamics for SU($3$) spins. Unlike the traditional classical limit based on SU($2$) coherent states, the results obtained with classical SU($3$) spins are in good…
Non-collinear chiral antiferromagnets like Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge are known to show gigantic anomalous Hall response depending on the orientation of their inverse chiral magnetic order of Mn atoms in Kagome layers. Here we study the stability of such magnetic order in the absence of external magnetic fields on the basis of stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for a simplified two-dimensional model of these materials. We find that even without external magnetic fields, the ordered state is, once formed, highly stable against thermal fluctuations. Moreover, we show that if Mn spins are well conf…
Motivated by experiments on non-magnetic triangular-lattice Mott insulators, we study one candidate paramagnetic phase, the columnar dimer (or valence-bond) phase. We apply variants of the bond-operator theory to a dimerized and spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and determine its zero-temperature phase diagram and the spectrum of elementary triplet excitations (triplons). Depending on model parameters, we find that the minimum of the triplon energy is located at either a commensurate or an incommensurate wavevector. Condensation of triplons at this commensurate-incommensurate tra…
The impulsive generation of two-magnon modes in antiferromagnets by femtosecond optical pulses, so-called femto-nanomagnons, leads to coherent longitudinal oscillations of the antiferromagnetic order parameter that cannot be described by a thermodynamic Landau-Lifshitz approach. We argue that this dynamics is triggered as a result of a laser-induced modification of the exchange interaction. In order to describe the oscillations we have formulated a quantum mechanical description in terms of magnon pair operators and coherent states. Such an approach allowed us to} derive an effective macroscop…
We present resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) results from small band width manganites (Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$, which show that the CE-type spin ordering (SO) at the phase boundary is stabilized only below the canted antiferromagnetic transition temperature and enhanced by ferromagnetism in the macroscopically insulating state (FM-I). Our results reveal the fragility of the CE-type ordering that underpins the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in this system, as well as an unexpected cooperative interplay between FM-I and CE-type SO which is in contrast to the competitive interplay between the …
The standard model of spin-transfer torque (STT) in antiferromagnetic spintronics considers exchange of angular momentum between quantum spins of flowing electrons and noncollinear-to-them localized spins treated as classical vectors. These vectors are assumed to realize Néel order in equilibrium, $\uparrow \downarrow \ldots \uparrow \downarrow$, and their STT-driven dynamics is described by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. However, many experimentally employed materials (such as archetypal NiO) are strongly electron-correlated antiferromagnetic Mott insulators (AFMI) where localize…
We demonstrate that magnetic phase separation and competing spin order in the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites can be directly explored via tuning strain in bulk samples of nanocrystalline La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$. Our results show that strain can be reversibly frozen into the lattice in order to stabilize coexisting antiferromagnetic domains within the nominally ferromagnetic metallic state of La$_{5/8}$Ca$_{3/8}$MnO$_3$. The measurement of tunable phase separation via magnetic neutron powder diffraction presents a direct route of exploring the correlated spin properties of phase sep…
