This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the Burgers equation with the critical dissipation. The well-posedness and analyticity in both of the space and the time variables are studied based on the frequency decomposition method. The large time behavior is revealed for any large initial data. As a result, it is shown that any smooth and integrable solution is analytic in space and time as long as time is positive and behaves like the Poisson kernel as time tends to infinity. The corresponding results are also obtined for the quasi-geostrophic equation.
Analytic continuation of viscous shock solution for the generalized Burgers equation with polynomial nonlinear source term is investigated. We show that a pertubated wave recovers its analyticity in the space variable in the strip limited by the first pair of singularities of the wave.
By using a new bilinear estimate, a pointwise estimate of the generalized Oseen kernel and an idea of fractional bootstrap, we show in this note that solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with fractional dissipation are analytic in space variables.
The paper is a comprehensive study of the existence, uniqueness, blow up and regularity properties of solutions of the Burgers equation with fractional dissipation. We prove existence of the finite time blow up for the power of Laplacian $α< 1/2,$ and global existence as well as analyticity of solution for $α\geq 1/2.$ We also prove the existence of solutions with very rough initial data $u_0 \in L^p,$ $1 < p < \infty.$ Many of the results can be extended to a more general class of equations, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation.
We study the Cauchy problem for the quasi-geostrophic equations with the critical dissipation in the two dimensional half space under the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We show the global existence, the uniqueness and the analyticity of solutions, and the real analyticity up to the boundary is obtained. We will show one of natural ways to estimate the nonlinear term for functions satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition.
We consider bounded weak solutions to the Burgers equation for which every entropy dissipation is representable by a measure and we prove that all these measures are concentrated on the graphs of countably many Lipschitz curves. The main tool is the Lagrangian representation, which is an extension of the method of characteristics to the non-smooth setting.
We consider the fractional Burgers' equation on $\R^N$ with the critical dissipation term. We follow the parabolic De-Giorgi's method of Caffarelli and Vasseur \cite{Driftdiffusion} and show existence of smooth solutions given any initial datum in $L^2(\R^N)$.
In this paper we study the inviscid limit of the Benjamin-Ono-Burgers equation in the energy space $ H^{1/2} (\R) $ or $ H^{1/2}(\T) $. We prove the strong convergence in the energy space of the solution to this equation toward the solution of the Benjamin-Ono equation as the dissipation coefficient converges to $ 0 $.
The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{\fracα{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers' solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state s…
In this paper, we study a one dimensional nonlinear equation with diffusion $-ν(-\partial_{xx})^{\fracα{2}}$ for $0\leq α\leq 2$ and $ν>0$. We use a viscous-splitting algorithm to obtain global nonnegative weak solutions in space $L^1(\mathbb{R})\cap H^{1/2}(\mathbb{R})$ when $0\leqα\leq 2$. For subcritical $1<α\leq 2$ and critical case $α=1$, we obtain global existence and uniqueness of nonnegative spatial analytic solutions. We use a fractional bootstrap method to improve the regularity of mild solutions in Bessel potential spaces for subcritical case $1<α\leq 2$. Then, we show that the solu…
We consider higher order viscous Burgers' equations with generalized nonlinearity and study the associated initial value problems for given data in the $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces. We introduce appropriate time weighted spaces to derive multilinear estimates and use them in the contraction mapping principle argument to prove local well-posedness for data with Sobolev regularity below $L^2$. We also prove ill-posedness for this type of models and show that the local well-posedness results are sharp in some particular cases viz., when the orders of dissipation $p$, and nonlinearity $k+1$, satisfy…
We prove that the KdV-Burgers is globally well-posed in $ H^{-1}(\T) $ with a solution-map that is analytic from $H^{-1}(\T) $ to $C([0,T];H^{-1}(\T))$ whereas it is ill-posed in $ H^s(\T) $, as soon as $ s<-1 $, in the sense that the flow-map $u_0\mapsto u(t) $ cannot be continuous from $ H^s(\T) $ to even ${\cal D}'(\T) $ at any fixed $ t>0 $ small enough. In view of the result of Kappeler and Topalov for KdV it thus appears that even if the dissipation part of the KdV-Burgers equation allows to lower the $ C^\infty $ critical index with respect to the KdV equation, it does not permit to imp…
We develop a Lagrangian approach to conservation-law anomalies in weak solutions of inviscid Burgers equation, motivated by previous work on the Kraichnan model of turbulent scalar advection. We show that the entropy solutions of Burgers possess Markov stochastic processes of (generalized) Lagrangian trajectories backward in time for which the Burgers velocity is a backward martingale. This property is shown to guarantee dissipativity of conservation-law anomalies for general convex functions of the velocity. The backward stochastic Burgers flows with these properties are not unique, however. …
We investigate the analyticity of the attractors of a class of Kuramoto-Sivashinsky type pseudo-differential equations in higher dimensions, which are periodic in all spatial variables and possess a universal attractor. This is done by fine-tuning the techniques used in a previous work of the second author, which are based on an analytic extensibility criterion involving the growth of $\nabla^n u$, as $n$ tends to infinity (here $u$ is the solution). These techniques can now be utilised in a variety of higher dimensional equations possessing universal attractors, including Topper--Kawahara equ…
The generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation (gBBMB) describes the flow of blood through a long, viscoelastic artery. In this article we introduce a formulation of gBBMB valid on networks with semi-infinite edges joined at a single junction, with the network's edges corresponding to a segment of the arterial tree. To reflect sudden changes in the material properties of blood vessels, the coefficients of gBBMB are allowed to take different values on each edge of the network. Critically, our formulation ensures that the total mass of the solution to gBBMB is constant in time, even in th…
We review some recent results for a class of fluid mechanics equations called active scalars, with fractional dissipation. Our main examples are the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, the Burgers equation, and the Cordoba-Cordoba-Fontelos model. We discuss nonlocal maximum principle methods which allow to prove existence of global regular solutions for the critical dissipation. We also recall what is known about the possibility of finite time blow up in the supercritical regime.
In this paper, we study the small-time global null controllability of the generalized Burgers' equations $y_t + γ|y|^{γ-1}y_x-y_{xx}=u(t)$ on the segment $[0,1]$. The scalar control $u(t)$ is uniform in space and plays a role similar to the pressure in higher dimension. We set a right Dirichlet boundary condition $y(t,1)=0$, and allow a left boundary control $y(t,0)=v(t)$. Under the assumption $γ>3/2$ we prove that the system is small-time global null controllable. Our proof relies on the return method and a careful analysis of the shape and dissipation of a boundary layer.
This investigation is a part of a research program aiming to characterize the extreme behavior possible in hydrodynamic models by analyzing the maximum growth of certain fundamental quantities. We consider here the rate of growth of the classical and fractional enstrophy in the fractional Burgers equation in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Since solutions to this equation exhibit, respectively, globally well-posed behavior and finite-time blow-up in these two regimes, this makes it a useful model to study the maximum instantaneous growth of enstrophy possible in these two distinct s…
The critical Burgers equation $\partial_t u + u \partial_x u + Λu = 0$ is a toy model for the competition between transport and diffusion with regard to shock formation in fluids. It is well known that smooth initial data does not generate shocks in finite time. Less is known about the long-time behavior for `shock-like' initial data: $u_0 \to \pm a$ as $x \to \mp \infty$. We describe this long-time behavior in the general setting of multidimensional critical scalar conservation laws $\partial_t u + \text{div}f(u) + Λu = 0$ when the initial data has limits at infinity. The asymptotics are give…
We consider a rather general class of evolutionary PDEs involving dissipation (of possibly fractional order), which competes with quadratic nonlinearities on the regularity of the overall equation. This includes as prototype models, Burgers' equation, the Navier-Stokes equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equations and the Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis. Here we establish a Petrowsky type parabolic estimate of such equations which entail a precise time decay of higher-order Sobolev norms for this class of equations. To this end, we introduce as a main new tool, an "infinite order energy…
In this work, we are interested in the small time global null controllability for the viscous Burgers' equation y_t - y_xx + y y_x = u(t) on the line segment [0,1]. The second-hand side is a scalar control playing a role similar to that of a pressure. We set y(t,1) = 0 and restrict ourselves to using only two controls (namely the interior one u(t) and the boundary one y(t,0)). In this setting, we show that small time global null controllability still holds by taking advantage of both hyperbolic and parabolic behaviors of our system. We use the Cole-Hopf transform and Fourier series to derive p…
We consider the long time behavior of the solutions to the Burgers-FKPP equation with advection of a strength $β\in\mathbb{R}$. This equation exhibits a transition from pulled to pushed front behavior at $β_c=2$. We prove convergence of the solutions to a traveling wave in a reference frame centered at a position $m_β(t)$ and study the asymptotics of the front location $m_β(t)$. When $β< 2$, it has the same form as for the standard Fisher-KPP equation established by Bramson \cite{Bramson1,Bramson2}: $m_β(t) = 2t - (3/2)\log(t) + x_\infty + o(1)$ as $t\to+\infty$. This form is typical of pulled…
We construct new integrable coupled systems of N=1 supersymmetric equations and present integrable fermionic extensions of the Burgers and Boussinesq equations. Existence of infinitely many higher symmetries is demonstrated by the presence of recursion operators. Various algebraic methods are applied to the analysis of symmetries, conservation laws, recursion operators, and Hamiltonian structures. A fermionic extension of the Burgers equation is related with the Burgers flows on associative algebras. A Gardner's deformation is found for the bosonic super-field dispersionless Boussinesq equatio…
We study the dissipation mechanism of a stochastic particle system for the Burgers equation. The velocity field of the viscous Burgers and Navier-Stokes equations can be expressed as an expected value of a stochastic process based on noisy particle trajectories [Constantin and Iyer Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 3 (2008) 330-345]. In this paper we study a particle system for the viscous Burgers equations using a Monte-Carlo version of the above; we consider N copies of the above stochastic flow, each driven by independent Wiener processes, and replace the expected value with $\frac{1}{N}$ times the su…
We present a technique for derivation of a priori bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of space-periodic three-dimensional solutions to evolutionary partial differential equations of hydrodynamic type. It involves a transformation of the flow velocity in the Fourier space, which introduces a feedback between the index of the norm and the norm of the transformed solution, and results in emergence of a mildly dissipative term. To illustrate the technique, we derive finite-time bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of solutions to the Euler and inviscid Burgers equations, and global in time bounds for the V…
This study is motivated by the question of how singularity formation and other forms of extreme behavior in nonlinear dissipative partial differential equations are affected by stochastic excitations. To address this question we consider the 1D fractional Burgers equation with additive colored noise as a model problem. This system is interesting, because in the deterministic setting it exhibits finite-time blow-up or a globally well-posed behavior depending on the value of the fractional dissipation exponent. The problem is studied by performing a series of accurate numerical computations comb…
We consider the generalised Burgers equation $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}=0,\ t \geq 0,\ x \in S^1, $$ where $f$ is strongly convex and $ν$ is small and positive. We obtain sharp estimates for Sobolev norms of $u$ (upper and lower bounds differ only by a multiplicative constant). Then, we obtain sharp estimates for small-scale quantities which characterise the decaying Burgers turbulence, i.e. the dissipation length scale, the structure functions and the energy spectrum. The proof uses a quantitative version of an ar…
We consider a modification of the three-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations and other hydrodynamical evolution equations with space-periodic initial conditions in which the usual Laplacian of the dissipation operator is replaced by an operator whose Fourier symbol grows exponentially as $\ue ^{|k|/\kd}$ at high wavenumbers $|k|$. Using estimates in suitable classes of analytic functions, we show that the solutions with initially finite energy become immediately entire in the space variables and that the Fourier coefficients decay faster than $\ue ^{-C(k/\kd) \ln (|k|/\kd)}$ for any $C<1/(2\ln…
In this paper, we establish Gevrey class regularity of solutions to a class of dissipative equations with an analytic nonlinearity in the whole space. This generalizes the results of Ferrari and Titi in the periodic space case with initial data in $L^2-$based Sobolev spaces to the $L^p$ setting and in the whole space. Our generalization also includes considering rougher initial data, in negative Sobolev spaces in some cases including the Navier-Stokes and the subcritical quasi-geostrophic equations, and allowing the dissipation operator to be a fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we derive global …
We analyze a class of linear shell models subject to stochastic forcing in finitely many degrees of freedom. The unforced systems considered formally conserve energy. Despite being formally conservative, we show that these dynamical systems support dissipative solutions (suitably defined) and, as a result, may admit unique (statistical) steady states when the forcing term is nonzero. This claim is demonstrated via the complete characterization of the solutions of the system above for specific choices of the coupling coefficients. The mechanism of anomalous dissipations is shown to arise via a …

We analyze the propagation of Lipschitz continuity of solutions to various linear and nonlinear drift-diffusion systems, with and without incompressibility constraints. Diffusion is assumed to be either fractional or classical. Such equations model the incompressible Navier-Stokes systems, generalized viscous Burgers-Hilbert equation and various active scalars. We derive conditions that guarantee the propagation of Lipschitz regularity by the incompressible NSE in the form of a non-local, one dimensional viscous Burgers-type inequality. We show the analogous inequality is always satisfied for …
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in a rectangle with the usual no-slip boundary condition prescribed on the upper and lower boundaries. We prove that for any positive time, for any finite energy initial data, there exist controls on the left and right boundaries and a distributed force, which can be chosen arbitrarily small in any Sobolev norm in space, such that the corresponding solution is at rest at the given final time. Our work improves earlier results where the distributed force is small only in a negative Sobolev space. It is a further step towards an answer to …
