This paper aims to define and study currents and slices of currents in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$. Currents, depending on their integration properties and on those of their boundaries, can be classified into subspaces and, assuming their support to be compact, we can work with currents of finite mass, define the notion of slices of Heisenberg currents and show some important properties for them. While some such properties are similarly true in Riemannian settings, others carry deep consequences because they do not include the slices of the middle dimension $n$, which opens new challenges and scenarios for the possibility of developing a compactness theorem. Furthermore, this suggests that the study of currents on the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ diverges from the other cases, because that is the only situation in which the dimension of the slice of a hypersurface, $2n-1$, coincides with the middle dimension $n$, which triggers a change in the associated differential operator in the Rumin complex.
In this note we prove that the Heisenberg group with a left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric admits a completely integrable totally geodesic distribution of codimension 1. This is on the contrary to the Riemannian case, as it was proved by T. Hangan.
We use a Riemannnian approximation scheme to define a notion of $\textit{sub-Riemannian Gaussian curvature}$ for a Euclidean $C^{2}$-smooth surface in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$ away from characteristic points, and a notion of $\textit{sub-Riemannian signed geodesic curvature}$ for Euclidean $C^{2}$-smooth curves on surfaces. These results are then used to prove a Heisenberg version of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. An application to Steiner's formula for the Carnot-Carathéodory distance in $\mathbb{H}$ is provided.
We prove a version of Gauss-Bonnet theorem in sub-Riemannian Heisenberg space $H^1$. The sub-Riemannian distance makes $H^1$ a metric space and consenquently with a spherical Hausdorff measure. Using this measure, we define a Gaussian curvature at points of a surface S where the sub-Riemannian distribution is transverse to the tangent space of S. If all points of S have this property, we prove a Gauss-Bonnet formula and for compact surfaces (which are topologically a torus) we obtain $\int_S K = 0$.
The notion of $Γ$-symmetric space is a natural generalization of the classical notion of symmetric space based on $\z_2$-grading of Lie algebras. In our case, we consider homogeneous spaces $G/H$ such that the Lie algebra $\g$ of $G$ admits a $Γ$-grading where $Γ$ is a finite abelian group. In this work we study Riemannian metrics and Lorentzian metrics on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_3$ adapted to the symmetries of a $Γ$-symmetric structure on $\mathbb{H}_3$. We prove that the classification of $\z_2^2$-symmetric Riemannian and Lorentzian metrics on $\mathbb{H}_3$ corresponds to the class…

We show that in the first sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group there are intrinsic graphs of smooth functions that are both critical and stable points of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under compactly supported variations of contact diffeomorphisms, despite the fact that they are not area-minimizing surfaces. In particular, we show that if $f:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a $C^1$-intrinsic function, and $\nabla^f\nabla^ff=0$, then the first contact variation of the sub-Riemannian area of its intrinsic graph is zero and the second contact variation is positive.
It is shown that parts of planes, helicoids and hyperbolic paraboloids are the only minimal surfaces ruled by geodesics in the three dimensional Riemannian Heisenberg group. It is also shown that they are the only surfaces in the three dimensional Heisenberg group whose mean curvature is zero with respect to both of the standard Riemannian metric and the standard Lorentzian metric.
We verify if Gausssian curvature of surfaces and normal curvature of curves in surfaces introduced by Diniz-Veloso arXiv:1210.7110 and by Balogh-Tyson-Vecchi arXiv:1604.00180 to prove Gauss-Bonnet theorems in Heisenberg space $\mathbb H^1$ are equal. The authors in arXiv:1604.00180 utilize a limit of Gaussian and normal curvatures defined in the Riemannian approximations scheme $(\mathbb R^3,g_L)$ introduced by Gromov to study sub-Riemannian spaces. They show that these limits exist (unlike the limit of Riemannian surface area form or length form), and they obtain Gauss-Bonnet theorem in $\mat…
Minimal surfaces in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group can be constructed by means of a Riemannian approximation scheme, as limit of Riemannian minimal surfaces. We study the regularity of Lipschitz, non-characteristic minimal surfaces which arise as such limits. Our main results are a-priori estimates on the solutions of the approximating Riemannian PDE and the ensuing $C^{\infty}$ regularity of the sub-Riemannian minimal surface along its Legendrian foliation.
We study heat kernel measures on sub-Riemannian infinite-dimensional Heisenberg-like Lie groups. In particular, we show that Cameron-Martin type quasi-invariance results hold in this subelliptic setting and give $L^p$-estimates for the Radon-Nikodym derivatives. The main ingredient in our proof is a generalized curvature-dimension estimate which holds on approximating finite-dimensional projection groups. Such estimates were first introduced by Baudoin and Garofalo in \cite{BaudoinGarofalo2011}.
The paper is devoted to the large scale geometry of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H$ equipped with left-invariant Riemannian distances. We prove that two such distances have bounded difference if and only if they are asymptotic, i.e., their ratio goes to one, at infinity. Moreover, we show that for every left-invariant Riemannian distance $d$ on $\mathbb H$ there is a unique subRiemanniann metric $d'$ for which $d-d'$ goes to zero at infinity, and we estimate the rate of convergence. As a first immediate consequence we get that the Riemannian Heisenberg group is at bounded distance from its as…
We address the problem of integrability of the sub-Riemannian mean curvature of an embedded hypersurface around isolated characteristic points. The main contribution of this note is the introduction of a concept of mildly degenerate characteristic point for a smooth surface of the Heisenberg group, in a neighborhood of which the sub-Riemannian mean curvature is integrable (with respect to the perimeter measure induced by the Euclidean structure). As a consequence we partially answer to a question posed by Danielli-Garofalo-Nhieu in [Danielli D., Garofalo N., Nhieu D.M., Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.,…
In this note, we obtain the asymptotic estimate for the time derivative of the $Φ$-entropy in terms of the lower bound on the Bakry-Emery $Γ_2$ curvature. In the cases of Hyperbolic space and Heisenberg group, we show that the time derivative of the $Φ$-entropy is non-increasing, and we also get sharp asymptotic bound for the time derivative of the entropy in the Heisenberg group.
We consider surfaces of class $C^1$ in the $3$-dimensional sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group ${\mathbb H}^1$. Assuming the surface is area-stationary, i.e., a critical point of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under compactly supported variations, we show that its regular part is foliated by horizontal straight lines. In case the surface is complete and oriented, without singular points, and stable, i.e., a second order minimum of perimeter, we prove that the surface must be a vertical plane. This implies the following Bernstein type result: a complete locally area-minimizing intrinsic graph of a $C…
We consider the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $δ_E$ to a closed set $E$ in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\ge 1$. The $\mathbb{H}$-regularity of $δ_E$ is proved under mild conditions involving a general notion of singular points. In case $E$ is a Euclidean $C^k$ submanifold, $k\ge 2$, we prove that $δ_E$ is $C^k$ out of the singular set. Explicit expressions for the volume of the tubular neighborhood when the boundary of $E$ is of class $C^2$ are obtained, out of the singular set, in terms of the horizontal principal curvatures of $\partial E$ and of the function $\langl…
We study isometries in the contact sub-pseudo-Riemannian geometry. In particular we give an upper bound on the dimension of the isometry group of a general sub-pseudo-Riemannian manifold and prove that the maximal dimension is attained for the left invariant structures on the Heisenberg group.
Let Hn denote the (2n + 1)-dimensional (sub-Riemannian) Heisenberg group. In this note, we shall prove an integral identity (see Theorem 1.2) which generalizes a formula obtained in the Seventies by Reilly. Some first applications will be given in Section 4.
We study a family of spheres with constant mean curvature (CMC) in the Riemannian Heisenberg group $H^1$. These spheres are conjectured to be the isoperimetric sets of $H^1$. We prove several results supporting this conjecture. We also focus our attention on the sub-Riemannian limit.
We classify all the translating solitons to the mean curvature flow in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group that are invariant under the action of some one-parameter group of isometries of the ambient manifold. The problem is solved considering any canonical deformation of the standard Riemannian metric of the Heisenberg group. We highlight similarities and differences with the analogous Euclidean translators: we mention in particular that we describe the analogous of the tilted grim reaper cylinders, of the bowl solution and of translating catenoids, but some of them are not convex in contr…
We investigate the notion of H-subdifferential and H-normal map of a function on the Heisenberg group, based on its sub-Riemannian structure. In particular, a characterization of the convexity of a function is given via the nonemptiness of the H-subdifferential at every point.
We study constant mean curvature graphs in the Riemannian 3-dimensional Heisenberg spaces ${\cal H}={\cal H}(τ)$. Each such ${\cal H}$ is the total space of a Riemannian submersion onto the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ with geodesic fibers the orbits of a Killing field. We prove the existence and uniqueness of CMC graphs in ${\cal H}$ with respect to the Riemannian submersion over certain domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ taking on prescribed boundary values.
We build an analogue for the Levi-Civita connection on Riemannian manifolds for sub-Riemannian manfiolds modeled on the Heisenberg group. We demonstrate some geometric properties of this connection to justify our choice and show that this connection is unique in having these properties.
We consider the biharmonicity condition for maps between Riemannian manifolds (see [BK]), and study the non-geodesic biharmonic curves in the Heisenberg group H_3. First we prove that all of them are helices, and then we obtain explicitly their parametric equations.
We consider the three-dimensional Heisenberg group, equipped with any left-invariant metric, either Lorentzian or Riemannian. We completely classify their affine vector fields and investigate their relationship with Killing vector fields and their casual character. We also classify their Ricci, curvature and matter collineations, proving that there are no nontrivial examples.
We investigate the minimal surface problem in the three dimensional Heisenberg group, H, equipped with its standard Carnot-Caratheodory metric. Using a particular surface measure, we characterize minimal surfaces in terms of a sub-elliptic partial differential equation and prove an existence result for the Plateau problem in this setting. Further, we provide a link between our minimal surfaces and Riemannian constant mean curvature surfaces in H equipped with different Riemannian metrics approximating the Carnot-Caratheodory metric. We generate a large library of examples of minimal surfaces a…
In the infinite dimensional Heisenberg group, we construct a left invariant weak Riemannian metric that gives a degenerate geodesic distance. The same construction yields a degenerate sub-Riemannian distance. We show how the standard notion of sectional curvature adapts to our framework, but it cannot be defined everywhere and it is unbounded on suitable sequences of planes. The vanishing of the distance precisely occurs along this sequence of planes, so that the degenerate Riemannian distance appears in connection with an unbounded sectional curvature. In the 2005 paper by Michor and Mumford,…
Timelike surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group with left invariant semi-Riemannian metric are studied. In particular, non-vertical timelike minimal surfaces are characterized by the non-conformal Lorentz harmonic maps into the de Sitter two phere. On the basis of the characterization, the generalized Weierstrass type representation will be established through the loop group decompositions.
We prove that, in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$, an entire locally Lipschitz intrinsic graph admitting vanishing first variation of its sub-Riemannian area and non-negative second variation must be an intrinsic plane, i.e., a coset of a two dimensional subgroup of $\mathbb{H}$. Moreover two examples are given for stressing result's sharpness.
By adapting a technique of Molchanov, we obtain the heat kernel asymptotics at the sub-Riemannian cut locus, when the cut points are reached by an $r$-dimensional parametric family of optimal geodesics. We apply these results to the bi-Heisenberg group, that is, a nilpotent left-invariant sub-Rieman\-nian structure on $\mathbb{R}^{5}$ depending on two real parameters $α_{1}$ and $α_{2}$. We develop some results about its geodesics and heat kernel associated to its sub-Laplacian and we illuminate some interesting geometric and analytic features appearing when one compares the isotropic ($α_{1}=…
We classify all self-dual Einstein four-manifolds invariant under a principal action of the three-dimensional Heisenberg group with non-degenerate orbits. The metrics are explicit and we find, in particular, that the Einstein constant can take any value. Then we study when the corresponding (Riemannian or neutral-signature) metrics are (geodesically) complete. Finally, we exhibit the solutions of non-zero Ricci-curvature as different branches of one-loop deformed universal hypermultiplets in Riemannian and neutral signature.
In this paper we study the notion of geodesic curvature of smooth horizontal curves parametrized by arc lenght in the Heisenberg group, that is the simplest sub-Riemannian structure. Our goal is to give a metric interpretation of this notion of geodesic curvature as the first corrective term in the Taylor expansion of the distance between two close points of the curve.
We prove that no Brunn--Minkowski inequality from the Riemannian theories of curvature-dimension and optimal transportation can by satisfied by a strictly subRiemannian structure. Our proof relies on the same method as for the Heisenberg group together with new investigations by Agrachev, Barillari and Rizzi on ample normal geodesics of subRieman-nian structures and the geodesic dimension attached to them.
In this paper we consider surfaces of class $C^1$ with continuous prescribed mean curvature in a three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold and prove that their characteristic curves are of class $C^2$. This regularity result also holds for critical points of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under a volume constraint. All results are valid in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$.
In this paper the classification of left-invariant Riemannian metrics, up to the action of the automorphism group, on cotangent bundle of (2n+1)-dimensional Heisenberg group is presented. Also, it is proved that the complex structure on that group is unique and the corresponding pseudoKähler metrics are described and shown to be Ricci flat. It is well known that this algebra admits an ad-invariant metric of neutral signature. Here, the uniqueness of such metric is proved
We initiate the study of X-ray tomography on sub-Riemannian manifolds, for which the Heisenberg group exhibits the simplest nontrivial example. With the language of the group Fourier Transform, we prove an operator-valued incarnation of the Fourier Slice Theorem, and apply this new tool to show that a sufficiently regular function on the Heisenberg group is determined by its line integrals over sub-Riemannian geodesics. We also consider the family of taming metrics $g_ε$ approximating the sub-Riemannian metric, and show that the associated X-ray transform is injective for all $ε>0$. This resul…
In this note I study the Sasakian geometry associated to the standard CR structure on the Heisenberg group, and prove that the Sasaki cone coincides with the set of extremal Sasakian structures. Moreover, the scalar curvature of these extremal metrics is constant if and only if the metric has $Φ$-sectional curvature $-3.$ I also briefly discuss some relations with the well-know sub-Riemannian geometry of the Heisenberg group as well as the standard Sasakian structure induced on compact quotients.
In the present paper we consider generic Sub-Riemannian structures on the co-rank 1 non-holonomic vector distributions and introduce the associated canonical volume and ''horizontal'' area forms. As in the classical case, the Sub-Riemannian minimal surfaces can be defined as the critical points of the '`horizontal'' area functional. We derive an intrinsic equation for minimal surfaces associated to a generic Sub-Riemannian structure of co-rank 1 in terms of the canonical volume form and the ``horizontal'' normal. The presented construction permits to describe the Sub-Riemannian minimal surface…
In this paper, we compute sub-Riemannian limits of Gaussian curvature associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections and the adapted connection for a Euclidean $C^2$-smooth surface in the Heisenberg group away from characteristic points and signed geodesic curvature associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections and the adapted connection for Euclidean $C^2$-smooth curves on surfaces. We get Gauss-Bonnet theorems associated to two kinds of Schouten-Van Kampen affine connections in the Heisenberg group.
In this paper a conformal classification of three dimensional left-invariant sub-Riemannian contact structures is carried out; in particular we will prove the following dichotomy: either a structure is locally conformal to the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H_3$, or its conformal classification coincides with the metric one. If a structure is locally conformally flat, then its conformal group is locally isomorphic to $SU(2,1)$.
We study the Gauss map of minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. We prove that the Gauss map of a nowhere vertical minimal surface is harmonic into the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$. Conversely, any nowhere antiholomorphic harmonic map into $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the Gauss map of a nowhere vertical minimal surface. Finally, we study the image of the Gauss map of complete nowhere vertical minimal surfaces.
