We present an effective Hamiltonian theory available for some quasi-periodically driven quantum systems which does not need the knowledge of the Fourier frequencies of the control signal. It could also be available for some chaotically driven quantum systems. It is based on the Koopman approach which generalizes the Floquet approach used with periodically driven systems. We show the properties of the quasi-energy states (eigenvectors of the effective Hamiltonian) as quasi-recurrent states of the quantum system.
We in this paper demonstrate that the $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for a periodically driven system can be generated from a kernel Hamiltonian by a generalized gauge transformation. The kernel Hamiltonian is Hermitian and static, while the time-dependent transformation operator has to be $PT$ symmetric and non-unitary in general. Biorthogonal sets of eigenstates appear necessarily as a consequence of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We obtain analytically the wave functions and associated non-adiabatic Berry phase $γ_{n}$ for the $n$th eigenstate. The classical version of the non-Hermiti…
We study in this paper the time evolution of $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian consisting of periodically driven $SU(1,1)$ generators. A non-Hermitian invariant operator is adopted to solve the Schrödinger equation, since the time-dependent Hamiltonian is no longer a conserved quantity. We propose a scheme to construct the non-Hermitian invariant with a $PT$-symmetric but non-unitary transformation operator. The eigenstates of invariant and its complex conjugate form a bi-orthogonal basis to formulate the exact solution. We obtain the non-adiabatic Berry phase, which reduces to the adia…
We study the scattering of photons from periodically modulated quantum-optical systems. For excitation-number conserving quantum optical systems, we connect the analytic structure of the frequency-domain N-photon scattering matrix of the system to the Floquet decomposition of its effective Hamiltonian. Furthermore, it is shown that the first order contribution to the transmission or equal-time N-photon correlation spectrum with respect to the modulation frequency is completely geometric in nature i.e. it only depends on the Hamiltonian trajectory and not on the precise nature of the modulation…

An integrable model subjected to a periodic driving gives rise generally to a non-integrable Floquet Hamiltonian. Here we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the integrable Lieb--Liniger model in presence of a linear potential with a periodic time--dependent strength is instead integrable and its quasi-energies can be determined using the Bethe ansatz approach. We discuss various aspects of the dynamics of the system at stroboscopic times and we also propose a possible experimental realisation of the periodically driven tilting in terms of a shaken rotated ring potential.
The dynamics of classical and quantum systems which are driven by a high frequency ($ω$) field is investigated. For classical systems the motion is separated into a slow part and a fast part. The motion for the slow part is computed perturbatively in powers of $ω^{-1}$ to order $ω^{-4}$ and the corresponding time independent Hamiltonian is calculated. Such an effective Hamiltonian for the corresponding quantum problem is computed to order $ω^{-4}$ in a high frequency expansion. Its spectrum is the quasienergy spectrum of the time dependent quantum system. The classical limit of this effective …
We analyse periodically modulated quantum systems with $SU(2)$ and $SU(1,1)$ symmetries. Transforming the Hamiltonian into the Floquet representation we apply the Lie transformation method, which allows us to classify all effective resonant transitions emerging in time-dependent systems. In the case of a single periodically perturbed system, we propose an explicit iterative procedure for the determination of the effective interaction constants corresponding to every resonance both for weak and strong modulation. For coupled quantum systems we determine the efficient resonant transitions appear…
Driving a quantum system periodically in time can profoundly alter its long-time dynamics and trigger topological order. Such schemes are particularly promising for generating non-trivial energy bands and gauge structures in quantum-matter systems. Here, we develop a general formalism that captures the essential features ruling the dynamics: the effective Hamiltonian, but also the effects related to the initial phase of the modulation and the micro-motion. This framework allows for the identification of driving schemes, based on general N-step modulations, which lead to configurations relevant…
We find the conditions under which the spectrum of the unitary time evolution operator for a periodically rank-N kicked system remains pure point. This stability result allows one to analyse the onset of, or lack of chaos in this class of quantum mechanical systems, extending the results for rank-1 systems produced by Combescure and others. This work includes a number of unitary theorems equivalent to those well known and used in the self-adjoint theory.
We investigate a Bose Einstein condensate held in a 1D optical lattice whose phase undergoes a fast oscillation using a statistical analysis. The averaged potential experienced by the atoms boils down to a periodic potential having the same spatial period but with a renormalized depth. However, the atomic dynamics also contains a \emph{micromotion} whose main features are revealed by a Kolmorogov-Smirnov analysis of the experimental momentum distributions. We furthermore discuss the impact of the micromotion on a quench process corresponding to a proper sudden change of the driving amplitude w…
The violation of the Floquet version of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is systematically discussed with realistic Hamiltonians. Our model is based on the PXP type interactions without disorder. We exactly prove the existence of many-body scar states in the Floquet eigenstates, by showing the explicit expressions of the wave functions. Using the underlying physical mechanism, various driven Hamiltonians with Floquet-scar states can be systematically engineered.
We present a systematic construction of effective Hamiltonians of periodically driven quantum systems. Because of an equivalence between the time dependence of a Hamiltonian and an interaction in its Floquet operator, flow equations, that permit to decouple interacting quantum systems, allow us to identify time-independent Hamiltonians for driven systems. With this approach, we explain the experimentally observed deviation of expected suppression of tunneling in ultracold atoms.
We propose a quantum metrology protocol for measuring frequencies and weak forces based on a periodic modulating quantum Jahn-Teller system composed of a single spin interacting with two bosonic modes. We show that in the first order of the frequency drive the time-independent effective Hamiltonian describes spin-dependent interaction between the two bosonic modes. In the limit of high-frequency drive and low bosonic frequency the quantum Jahn-Teller system exhibits critical behaviour which can be used for high-precision quantum estimation. A major advantage of our scheme is the robustness of …
We study the dynamics of isolated interacting spin chains that are periodically driven by sudden quenches. Using full exact diagonalization of finite chains, we show that these systems exhibit three distinct regimes. For short driving periods, the Floquet Hamiltonian is well approximated by the time-averaged Hamiltonian, while for long periods the evolution operator exhibits properties of random matrices of a Circular Ensemble (CE). In-between, there is a crossover regime. Based on a finite-size scaling analysis and analytic arguments we argue that, for thermodynamically large systems and non-…
We explore the charging of a quantum battery based on spin systems through periodic modulation of a transverse-field like Ising Hamiltonian. In the integrable limit, we find that resonance tunneling can lead to a higher transfer of energy to the battery and better stability of the stored energy at specific drive frequencies. When the integrability is broken in the presence of an additional longitudinal field, we find that the effective Floquet Hamiltonian contains terms which may lead to a global charging of the battery. However, we do not find any quantum advantage in the charging power, thus…
Floquet theory combined with the generalized Van Vleck nearly degenerate perturbation theory, has been widely employed for studying various two-level systems that are driven by external fields via the time-dependent longitudinal (i.e., diagonal) couplings. However, three-level systems strongly driven by the time-dependent transverse (i.e., off-diagonal) couplings have rarely been investigated, due to the breakdown of the traditional rotating wave approximation. Meanwhile, the conventional perturbation theory is not directly applicable, since a small parameter for the perturbed part is no longe…
The Floquet-Magnus expansion is a useful tool to calculate an effective Hamiltonian for periodically driven systems. In this study, we investigate the convergence of the expansion for a one-body nonlinear system in a continuous space, a driven anharmonic oscillator. In this model, all eigenstates of the time evolution operator are found to be localized in energy space, and the expectation value of the energy is bounded from above. We first propose a general procedure to estimate the radius of convergence of the Floquet-Magnus expansion for periodically driven systems with an unbounded energy s…
We present an approach for obtaining eigenfunctions of periodically driven time-dependent Hamiltonians. Assuming an approximate scale separation between two spatial regions where different potentials dominate, we derive an explicit expansion for scattering problems with mixed cylindrical and spherical symmetry, by matching wavefunctions of a periodic linear drive in the exterior region to solutions of an arbitrary interior potential expanded in spherical waves. Using this method we study quasi-bound states of a square-well potential in three dimensions subject to an axial driving force. In the…
We consider wave transport phenomena in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric extension of the periodically-kicked quantum rotator model and reveal that dynamical localization assists the unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$ phase. In the delocalized (quantum resonance) regime, $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is always in the broken phase and ratchet acceleration arises as a signature of unidirectional non-Hermitian transport. An optical implementation of the periodically-kicked $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian, based on transverse beam propagation in a passive optical resonator with combined phase and loss gratings, is …
We study heating rates in strongly interacting quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Using a numerical linked cluster expansion, we calculate the energy as a function of the driving time and find a robust exponential regime. The heating rates are shown to be in excellent agreement with Fermi's golden rule. We discuss the relationship between heating rates and, within the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, the smooth function that characterizes the off-diagonal matrix elements of the drive operator in the eigenbasis of the static Hamiltonian. We show that such a function, in no…
We study the quantum version of a tilting and flashing Hamiltonian ratchets, consisting of a periodic potential and a time-periodic driving field. The system dynamics is governed by a Floquet evolution matrix bearing the symmetry of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The dc-current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting when all the relevant symmetries are violated. Those eigenstates which mostly contribute to a directed transport reside in phase space regions corresponding to classical resonances. Quantum dynamics leads to the dependence of the avera…
Complete positivity is a ubiquitous assumption in the study of quantum systems interacting with the environment, despite repeated efforts to point out that the assumption is not empirically justified. It will be shown that Hamiltonian evolution of a quantum system and its environment can be negative (i.e.\ not completely positive) in the energy basis, by showing that such evolution is {\it almost always} negative for given initial conditions. Ignoring or "correcting" experimental data that is not completely positive may cause the loss of important information regarding system-environment corre…
We present a theoretical method to generate a highly accurate {\em time-independent} Hamiltonian governing the finite-time behavior of a time-periodic system. The method exploits infinitesimal unitary transformation steps, from which renormalization group-like flow equations are derived to produce the effective Hamiltonian. Our tractable method has a range of validity reaching into frequency regimes that are usually inaccessible via high frequency $ω$ expansions in the parameter $h/ω$, where $h$ is the upper limit for the strength of local interactions. We demonstrate our approach on both inte…
Floquet engineering, modulating quantum systems in a time periodic way, lies at the central part for realizing novel topological dynamical states. Thanks to the Floquet engineering, various new realms on experimentally simulating topological materials have emerged. Conventional Floquet engineering, however, only applies to time periodic non-dissipative Hermitian systems, and for the quantum systems in reality, non-Hermitian process with dissipation usually occurs. So far, it remains unclear how to characterize topological phases of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems via the frequency sp…
We study the evolution of bosons in a periodically driven optical lattice during a slow change of the driving amplitude. Both the regime of high frequency and low frequency driving are investigated. In the low frequency regime, resonant absorption of energy is observed. In the high frequency regime, the dynamics is compared to a system with an effective Hamiltonian in which the atoms are `dressed' by the driving field. This `dressing' can dramatically change the amplitude and sign of the effective tunneling. A particular focus of this study is the investigation of the time-scales necessary for…
We propose a realization of a synthetic Random Flux Model in a two-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian for two atom species we show how to use fast-periodic modulation of the system parameters to construct random gauge field. We investigate the transport properties of such a system and describe the impact of time-reversal symmetry breaking and correlations in disorder on Anderson localization length.
We consider a model of leaky quantum wire in three dimensions. The Hamiltonian is a singular perturbation of the Laplacian supported by a line with the coupling which is bounded and periodically modulated along the line. We demonstrate that such a system has a purely absolutely continuous spectrum and its negative part has band structure with an at most finite number of gaps. This result is extended also to the situation when there is an infinite number of the lines supporting the perturbations arranged periodically in one direction.
We propose a general framework to solve tight binding models in D dimensional lattices driven by ac electric fields. Our method is valid for arbitrary driving regimes and allows to obtain effective Hamiltonians for different external fields configurations. We establish an equivalence with time independent lattices in D+1 dimensions, and analyze their topological properties. Further, we demonstrate that non-adiabaticity drives a transition from topological invariants defined in D+1 to D dimensions. Our approach provides a theoretical framework to analyze ac driven systems, with potential applic…
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
We give a systematic review of the adiabatic theorem and the leading non-adiabatic corrections in periodically-driven (Floquet) systems. These corrections have a two-fold origin: (i) conventional ones originating from the gradually changing Floquet Hamiltonian and (ii) corrections originating from changing the micro-motion operator. These corrections conspire to give a Hall-type linear response for non-stroboscopic (time-averaged) observables allowing one to measure the Berry curvature and the Chern number related to the Floquet Hamiltonian, thus extending these concepts to periodically-driven…
We provide numerical evidence for a temporal quantum-mechanical interference phenomenon: time molecules (TM). A variety of such stroboscopic states are observed in the dynamics of two interacting qubits subject to a periodic sequence of $π$-pulses with the period $T$. The TMs appear periodically in time and have a large duration, $δt_\mathrm{TM} \gg T$. All TMs demonstrate an almost zero value of the total polarization and a strong enhancement of the entanglement entropy $S$ up to the maximum value $S=\ln 2$ of a corresponding Bell state. The TMs are generated by the commensurability of the Fl…
We derive a systematic high-frequency expansion for the effective Hamiltonian and the micromotion operator of periodically driven quantum systems. Our approach is based on the block diagonalization of the quasienergy operator in the extended Floquet Hilbert space by means of degenerate perturbation theory. The final results are equivalent to those obtained within a different approach [Phys.\ Rev.\ A {\bf 68}, 013820 (2003), Phys.\ Rev.\ X {\bf 4}, 031027 (2014)] and can also be related to the Floquet-Magnus expansion [J.\ Phys.\ A {\bf 34}, 3379 (2000)]. We discuss that the dependence on the d…
We discuss the universal nature of relaxation in isolated many-body quantum systems subjected to global and strong periodic driving. Our rigorous Floquet analysis shows that the energy of the system remains almost constant up to an exponentially long time in frequency for arbitrary initial states and that an effective Hamiltonian obtained by a truncation of the Floquet-Magnus expansion is a quasi-conserved quantity for long time scale. These two general properties lead to intriguing classification on the initial stage of relaxation, one of which is similar to the prethermalization phenomenon i…
We experimentally study a periodically driven many-body localized system realized by interacting fermions in a one-dimensional quasi-disordered optical lattice. By preparing the system in a far-from-equilibrium state and monitoring the remains of an imprinted density pattern, we identify a localized phase at high drive frequencies and an ergodic phase at low ones. These two distinct phases are separated by a dynamical phase transition which depends on both the drive frequency and the drive strength. Our observations are quantitatively supported by numerical simulations and are directly connect…
According to the second law of thermodynamics the total entropy of a system is increased during almost any dynamical process. The positivity of the specific heat implies that the entropy increase is associated with heating. This is generally true both at the single particle level, like in the Fermi acceleration mechanism of charged particles reflected by magnetic mirrors, and for complex systems in everyday devices. Notable exceptions are known in noninteracting systems of particles moving in periodic potentials. Here the phenomenon of dynamical localization can prevent heating beyond certain …
We develop a flow renormalization approach for periodically-driven quantum systems, which reveals prethermal dynamical regimes and associated timescales via direct correspondence between real time and flow time behavior. In this formalism, the dynamical problem is recast in terms of coupling constants of the theory flowing towards an attractive fixed point that represents the thermal Floquet Hamiltonian at long times, while narrowly avoiding a series of unstable fixed points which determine distinct prethermal regimes at intermediate times. We study a class of relevant perturbations that trigg…
We perform an ab-initio comparison between nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory and optical lattice experiments by studying the time evolution of double occupations in the periodically driven Fermi-Hubbard model. For off-resonant driving, the range of validity of a description in terms of an effective static Hamiltonian is determined and its breakdown due to energy absorption close to resonance is demonstrated. For near-resonant driving, we investigate the response to a change in driving amplitude and discover an asymmetric excitation spectrum with respect to the detuning. In general, we…

We consider a periodically driven quantum system described by a Hamiltonian which is the product of a slowly varying Hermitian operator $V\left(\boldsymbolλ\left(t\right)\right)$ and a dimensionless periodic function with zero average. We demonstrate that the adiabatic evolution of the system within a fully degenerate Floquet band is accompanied by non-Abelian (non-commuting) geometric phases appearing when the slowly varying parameter $\boldsymbolλ=\boldsymbolλ\left(t\right)$ completes a closed loop. The geometric phases can have significant values even after completing a single cycle of the …
We study the dynamics of the periodically driven Rydberg chain starting from the state with zero Rydberg excitations (vacuum state denoted by $|0\rangle$) using a square pulse protocol in the high drive amplitude limit. We show, using exact diagonalization for finite system sizes ($L\le 26$), that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the system, within a range of drive frequencies which we chart out, hosts a set of quantum scars which have large overlap with the $|0\rangle$ state. These scars are distinct from their counterparts having high overlap with the maximal Rydberg excitation state ($|\mathbb{Z}…
The periodically driven quantum Ising chain has recently attracted a large attention in the context of Floquet engineering. In addition to the common paramagnet and ferromagnet, this driven model can give rise to new topological phases. In this work we systematically explore its quantum phase diagram, by examining the properties of its Floquet ground state. We specifically focus on driving protocols with time-reversal invariant points, and demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of distinct phases. These phases are separated by second-order quantum phase transitions, accompanied by con…
We aim to give a pedagogic presentation of the open system dynamics of a periodically driven qubit in contact with a temperature bath. We are specifically interested in the thermodynamics of the qubit. It is well known that by combining the Markovian approximation with Floquet theory it is possible to derive a stochastic Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{C}^2$ for the state of the qubit. We follow here a different approach. We use Floquet theory to embed the time-non autonomous qubit dynamics into time-autonomous yet infinite dimensional dynamics. We refer to the resulting infinite dimensional …
