Floquet theory combined with the generalized Van Vleck nearly degenerate perturbation theory, has been widely employed for studying various two-level systems that are driven by external fields via the time-dependent longitudinal (i.e., diagonal) couplings. However, three-level systems strongly driven by the time-dependent transverse (i.e., off-diagonal) couplings have rarely been investigated, due to the breakdown of the traditional rotating wave approximation. Meanwhile, the conventional perturbation theory is not directly applicable, since a small parameter for the perturbed part is no longer apparent. Here we develop a double-unitary-transformation approach to deal with the periodically modulated and strongly driven systems, where the time-dependent Hamiltonian has large off-diagonal elements. The first unitary transformation converts the strong off-diagonal elements to the diagonal ones, and the second enables us to harness the generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory to deal with the transformed Floquet matrix and also allows us to reduce the infinite-dimensional Floquet Hamiltonian to a finite effective one. For a strongly modulated three-level system, with the combination of the Floquet theory and the transformed generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory, we obtain analytical results of the system, which agree well with exact numerical solutions. This method offers a useful tool to analytically study the multi-level systems with strong transverse couplings.
We in this paper demonstrate that the $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for a periodically driven system can be generated from a kernel Hamiltonian by a generalized gauge transformation. The kernel Hamiltonian is Hermitian and static, while the time-dependent transformation operator has to be $PT$ symmetric and non-unitary in general. Biorthogonal sets of eigenstates appear necessarily as a consequence of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We obtain analytically the wave functions and associated non-adiabatic Berry phase $γ_{n}$ for the $n$th eigenstate. The classical version of the non-Hermiti…
We present theoretical study of revival phenomena for a wave packet initially well localized in a one-dimensional potential in the presence of an external periodic modulating field. The classical motion, revival, and super-revival time scale are derived exactly for wave packet excited in the one dimension box potential.
We study in this paper the time evolution of $PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian consisting of periodically driven $SU(1,1)$ generators. A non-Hermitian invariant operator is adopted to solve the Schrödinger equation, since the time-dependent Hamiltonian is no longer a conserved quantity. We propose a scheme to construct the non-Hermitian invariant with a $PT$-symmetric but non-unitary transformation operator. The eigenstates of invariant and its complex conjugate form a bi-orthogonal basis to formulate the exact solution. We obtain the non-adiabatic Berry phase, which reduces to the adia…
We investigate the analytical solution of a two-level system subject to a monochromatical, linearly polarized external field that was published a couple of years ago. In particular, we derive an explicit expression for the quasienergy. Moreover, we calculate the time evolution of a typical two-level system over a full period by evaluating series solutions of the confluent Heun equation. This is possible without invoking the connection problem of this equation since the complete time evolution of the system under consideration can be reduced to that of the first quarter-period.
We present a systematic construction of effective Hamiltonians of periodically driven quantum systems. Because of an equivalence between the time dependence of a Hamiltonian and an interaction in its Floquet operator, flow equations, that permit to decouple interacting quantum systems, allow us to identify time-independent Hamiltonians for driven systems. With this approach, we explain the experimentally observed deviation of expected suppression of tunneling in ultracold atoms.
Quantum revivals are investigated for the dynamics of an atom in a driven gravitational cavity. It is demonstrated that the external driving field influences the revival time significantly. Analytical expressions are presented which are based on second order perturbation theory and semiclassical secular theory. These analytical results explain the dependence of the revival time on the characteristic parameters of the problem quantitatively in a simple way. They are in excellent agreement with numerical results.
We find the conditions under which the spectrum of the unitary time evolution operator for a periodically rank-N kicked system remains pure point. This stability result allows one to analyse the onset of, or lack of chaos in this class of quantum mechanical systems, extending the results for rank-1 systems produced by Combescure and others. This work includes a number of unitary theorems equivalent to those well known and used in the self-adjoint theory.
We calculate the quantum revival time for a wave-packet initially well localized in a one-dimensional potential in the presence of an external periodic modulating field. The dependence of the revival time on various parameters of the driven system is shown analytically. As an example of application of our approach, we compare the analytically obtained values of the revival time for various modulation strengths with the numerically computed ones in the case of a driven gravitational cavity. We show that they are in very good agreement.
Periodically driven dynamics of open quantum systems is very interesting because typically non-equilibrium steady state is reached, which is characterized by a non-vanishing current. In this work, we study time discrete and periodically driven dynamics experimentally for a single photon that its coupled to its environment. We develop a comprehensive theory which explains the experimental observations and offers an analytical characterization of the non-equilibrium steady states of the system. We demonstrate that the periodic driving and the properties of the environment can be engineered in su…
We present analytical treatment of quantum walks on multidimensional hyper-cycle graphs. We derive the analytical expression of the probability distribution for strong and weak decoherence regimes. Upper bound to mixing time is obtained.
The mixed states are important in quantum optics since they frequently appear in the decoherence problems. When one of the components of the system is prepared in the mixed state and the evolution operator of this system is not available, one cannot deduce the density matrix. We present analytical approach to accurately solve this problem. The approach can be applied on the condition that the Schrödinger's equation of the system is solvable with any arbitrary initial state. In deriving the solution we exploit the fact that any mixed state can be expressed in terms of a phase state. The approac…
We study the dynamics of a two-level quantum system under the influence of sinusoidal driving in the intermediate frequency regime. Analyzing the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, we find combinations of the field parameters for which population transfer is optimal and takes place through a series of well defined steps of fixed duration. We also show how the corresponding evolution operator can be approximated at all times by a very simple analytical expression. We propose this model as being specially suitable for treating periodic driving at avoided crossings found in complex multi-level systems…
Extending notions of phase transitions to nonequilibrium realm is a fundamental problem for statistical mechanics. While it was discovered that critical transitions occur even for transient states before relaxation as the singularity of a dynamical version of free energy, their nature is yet to be elusive. Here, we show that spontaneous symmetry breaking can occur at a short-time regime and causes universal dynamical quantum phase transitions in periodically driven unitary dynamics. Unlike conventional phase transitions, the relevant symmetry is antiunitary: its breaking is accompanied by a ma…
A growing number of experimental set-ups in cavity optomechanics exploit periodically driven fields. However, such set-ups are not amenable to analysis using simple, yet powerful, closed-form expressions of linearized optomechanics, which have provided so much of our present understanding of experimental optomechanics. In the present paper, we formulate a new method to calculate quantum noise spectra in modulated optomechanical systems, which we analyze, compare, and discuss with two other recently proposed solutions: we term these (i) frequency-shifted operators (ii) Floquet and (iii) iterati…
The recurrence phenomena of an initially well localized wave packet are studied in periodically driven power-law potentials. For our general study we divide the potentials in two kinds, namely tightly binding and loosely binding potentials. In the presence of an external periodically modulating force, these potentials may exhibit classical and quantum chaos. The dynamics of a quantum wave packet in the modulated potentials displays recurrences at various time scales. We develop general analytical relations for these times and discuss their parametric dependence.
We consider topological phases in periodically driven (Floquet) systems exhibiting many-body localization, protected by a symmetry $G$. We argue for a general correspondence between such phases and topological phases of undriven systems protected by symmetry $\mathbb{Z} \rtimes G$, where the additional $\mathbb{Z}$ accounts for the discrete time translation symmetry. Thus, for example, the bosonic phases in $d$ spatial dimensions without intrinsic topological order (SPT phases) are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(\mathbb{Z} \rtimes G, \mathrm{U}(1))$. For unitary symmetries, we int…
We theoretically report the emergence of $Z_4$ parafermion edge modes in a periodically driven spinful superconducting chain with modest fermionic Hubbard interaction. These parafermion edge modes represent $\pm π/(2T)$ quasienergy excitations ($T$ being the driving period), which have no static counterpart and arise from the interplay between interaction effect and periodic driving. At special parameter values, these exotic quasiparticles can be analytically and exactly derived. Strong numerical evidence of their robustness against variations in parameter values and spatial disorder is furthe…
The Groverian measures are analytically computed in various types of three-qubit states. The final results are also expressed in terms of local-unitary invariant quantities in each type. This fact reflects the manifest local-unitary invariance of the Groverian measure. It is also shown that the analytical expressions for various types have correct limits to other types. For some types (type 4 and type 5) we failed to compute the analytical expression of the Groverian measure in this paper. However, from the consideration of local-unitary invariants we have shown that the Groverian measure in t…
In this work, we present a new approach to disordered, periodically driven (Floquet) quantum many-body systems based on flow equations. Specifically, we introduce a continuous unitary flow of Floquet operators in an extended Hilbert space, whose fixed point is both diagonal and time-independent, allowing us to directly obtain the Floquet modes. We first apply this method to a periodically driven Anderson insulator, for which it is exact, and then extend it to driven many-body localized systems within a truncated flow equation ansatz. In particular we compute the emergent Floquet local integral…
The dynamics of a qubit under the decoherence of a two level fluctuator (TLF) in addition to its coupling to a bosonic bath is investigated theoretically. Two different methods are applied and compared for this problem. One is a perturbation method based on a unitary transformation. With the merit of our unitary transformation, non-adiabatic effect can be taken into account efficiently. And the other one is the numerically exact method, namely the quasi-adiabatic path-integral (QUAPI) propagator technique. We find that the analytical method works well for a wide parameter range and show good a…
Detection and manipulation of excitations with non-Abelian statistics, such as Majorana fermions, are essential for creating topological quantum computers. To this end, we show the connection between the existence of such localized particles and the phenomenon of unitary subharmonic response (SR) in periodically driven systems. In particular, starting from highly nonequilibrium initial states, the unpaired Majorana modes exhibit spin oscillations with twice the driving period, are localized, and can have exponentially long lifetimes in clean systems. While the lifetime of SR is limited in tran…
Recurrence behavior of wave packets in coupled higher dimensional systems and periodically driven systems is analyzed, which takes place in the realm of higher coupling/modulation strength. We analyze the wave packet dynamics close to nonlinear resonances developed in the systems and provide the analytical understanding of recurrence times. We apply these analytical results to investigate the recurrence times of matter waves in optical lattice in the presence of external periodic forcing. The obtained analytical results can experimentally be observed using currently available experimental setup…
We investigate multi-"photon" interband excitation processes in an optical lattice that is driven periodically in time by a modulation of the lattice depth. Assuming the system to be prepared in the lowest band, we compute the excitation spectrum numerically. Moreover, we estimate the effective coupling parameters for resonant interband excitation processes analytically, employing degenerate perturbation theory in Floquet space. We find that below a threshold driving strength, interband excitations are suppressed exponentially with respect to the inverse driving frequency. For sufficiently low…
We present a theoretical method to generate a highly accurate {\em time-independent} Hamiltonian governing the finite-time behavior of a time-periodic system. The method exploits infinitesimal unitary transformation steps, from which renormalization group-like flow equations are derived to produce the effective Hamiltonian. Our tractable method has a range of validity reaching into frequency regimes that are usually inaccessible via high frequency $ω$ expansions in the parameter $h/ω$, where $h$ is the upper limit for the strength of local interactions. We demonstrate our approach on both inte…
In the thermodynamics of nanoscopic systems the relation between classical and quantum mechanical description is of particular importance. To scrutinize this correspondence we study an anharmonic oscillator driven by a periodic external force with slowly varying amplitude both classically and within the framework of quantum mechanics. The energy change of the oscillator induced by the driving is closely related to the probability distribution of work for the system. With the amplitude $λ(t)$ of the drive increasing from zero to a maximum $λ_{max}$ and then going back to zero again initial and …
The dynamics of qubits coupled to a harmonic oscillator with time-periodic coupling is investigated in the framework of Floquet theory. This system can be used to model nonadiabatic phenomena that require a periodic modulation of the qubit/oscillator coupling. The case of a single qubit coupled to a resonator populated with $n= 0,1$ photons is explicitly treated. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation describing the system's dynamics is solved within the Floquet formalism and a perturbative approach in the time- and Laplace-domain. Good quantitative agreement is found between the analytical a…
We study the dynamical fidelity $\mathcal{F} (t)$ and the Loschmidt echo $\mathcal{L} (t)$, following a periodic driving of the transverse magnetic field of a quantum Ising chain (back and forth across the quantum critical point) by calculating the overlap between the initial ground state and the state reached after $n$ periods $τ$. We show that $\log{\mathcal{F}}(nτ)/L$ (the logarithm of the fidelity per-site) reaches a steady value in the asymptotic limit $n\to \infty$, and we derive an exact analytical expression for this quantity. Remarkably, the steady state value of $[\log{\mathcal{F}}(n…
Optimal realizations of quantum technology tasks lead to the necessity of a detailed analytical study of the behavior of a $d$-level quantum system (qudit) under a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In the present article, we introduce a new general formalism describing the unitary evolution of a qudit $(d\geq2)$ in terms of the Bloch-like vector space and specify how in a general case this formalism is related to finding time-dependent parameters in the exponential representation of the evolution operator under an arbitrary time-dependent Hamiltonian. Applying this new general formalism to a qubit c…
We study the Floquet edge states in arrays of periodically curved optical waveguides described by the modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Beyond the bulk-edge correspondence, our study explores the interplay between band topology and periodic modulations. By analysing the quasi-energy spectra and Zak phase, we reveal that, although topological and non-topological edge states can exist for the same parameters, \emph{they can not appear in the same spectral gap}. In the high-frequency limit, we find analytically all boundaries between the different phases and study the coexistence of topologic…
In this work we study the entanglement entropy of a uniform quantum Ising chain in transverse field undergoing a periodic driving of period $τ$ . By means of Floquet theory we show that, for any subchain, the entanglement entropy tends asymptotically to a value $τ$ - periodic in time. We provide a semi-analytical formula for the leading term of this asymptotic regime: It is constant in time and obeys a volume law. The entropy in the asymptotic regime is always smaller than the thermal one: because of integrability the system locally relaxes to a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) density matrix.…
Periodic driving has the longstanding reputation for generating exotic phases of matter with no static counterparts. This work explores the interplay among periodic driving, interaction effects, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry that leads to the emergence of Floquet symmetry protected second-order topological phases in a simple but insightful two-dimensional spin-1/2 lattice. Through a combination of analytical and numerical treatments, we verify the formation of 0 and $π$ modes, i.e., corner localized $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry broken operators that respectively commute and anticommute with the one-p…
We found an universal local unitary (orthogonal) transformation which transforms any centrosymmetric (CS) density matrix ρ_{CS} into the X density matrix ρ_X: H\otimes Hρ_{CS}H\otimes H=ρ_X, where H is the Hadamard transformation. Because quantum discord is invariant under the local unitary transformations, this remarkable property allows to get the discord of general two-qubit CS states in the analytical form using the corresponding well-known formulas for the X states. Examples of systems with CS density matrices provided from the recent literature, including XXZ spin model with the Dzyalosh…
Two-level boson systems displaying a quantum phase transition from a spherical (symmetric) to a deformed (broken) phase are studied. A formalism to diagonalize Hamiltonians with $O(2L+1)$ symmetry for large number of bosons is worked out. Analytical results beyond the simple mean-field treatment are deduced by using the continuous unitary transformations technique. In this scheme, a 1/N expansion for different observables is proposed and allows one to compute the finite-size scaling exponents at the critical point. Analytical and numerical results are compared and reveal the power of the prese…
We take a central spin model (CSM), consisting of a one dimensional environmental Ising spin chain and a single qubit connected globally to all the spins of the environment, to study numerically the excess energy (EE) of the environment and the logarithm of decoherence factor namely, dynamical fidelity susceptibility per site (DFSS), associated with the qubit under a periodic driving of the transverse field term of environment across its critical point using the Floquet technique. The coupling to the qubit, prepared in a pure state, with the transverse field of the spin chain yields two sets o…

Using the density matrix formalism, we prove an existence theorem of the periodic steady-state for an arbitrary periodically-driven system. This state has the same period as the modulated external influence, and it is realized as an asymptotic solution ($t$$\to$$+\infty$) due to relaxation processes. The presented derivation simultaneously contains a simple computational algorithm non-using both Floquet and Fourier theories, i.e. our method automatically guarantees a full account of all frequency components. The description is accompanied by the examples demonstrating a simplicity and high eff…
We introduce an efficient algorithm for the computation of the $W_3$ invariant of general unitary maps, which converges rapidly even on coarse discretization grids. The algorithm does not require extensive manipulation of the unitary maps, identification of the precise positions of degeneracy points, or fixing the gauge of eigenvectors. After construction of the general algorithm, we explain its application to the $2+1$ dimensional maps that arise in the Floquet-Bloch theory of periodically driven two-dimensional quantum systems. We demonstrate this application by computing the $W_3$ invariant…
We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. …
In recent experiments, time-dependent periodic fields are used to create exotic topological phases of matter with potential applications ranging from quantum transport to quantum computing. These nonequilibrium states, at high driving frequencies, exhibit the quintessential robustness against local disorder similar to equilibrium topological phases. However, proving the existence of such topological phases in a general setting is an open problem. We propose a universal effective theory that leverages on modern free probability theory and ideas in random matrices to analytically predict the exi…
