We present a theoretical method to generate a highly accurate {\em time-independent} Hamiltonian governing the finite-time behavior of a time-periodic system. The method exploits infinitesimal unitary transformation steps, from which renormalization group-like flow equations are derived to produce the effective Hamiltonian. Our tractable method has a range of validity reaching into frequency regimes that are usually inaccessible via high frequency $ω$ expansions in the parameter $h/ω$, where $h$ is the upper limit for the strength of local interactions. We demonstrate our approach on both interacting and non-interacting many-body Hamiltonians where it offers an improvement over the more well-known Magnus expansion and other high frequency expansions. For the interacting models, we compare our approximate results to those found via exact diagonalization. While the approximation generally performs better globally than other high frequency approximations, the improvement is especially pronounced in the regime of lower frequencies and strong external driving. This regime is of special interest because of its proximity to the resonant regime where the effect of a periodic drive is the most dramatic. Our results open a new route towards identifying novel non-equilibrium regimes and behaviors in driven quantum many-particle systems.
When the discrete time-translation symmetry of isolated, periodically driven systems is spontaneously broken, a new phase of matter can emerge. We review some recent developments on both the theoretical underpinnings and experimental realizations of time crystalline order. Particular attention is placed on delineating the key features of time crystals, which distinguish them from other oscillatory non-equilibrium phenomena.
We study the coherent dynamics of a quantum many-body system subject to a time-periodic driving. We argue that in many cases, destructive interference in time makes most of the quantum averages time-periodic, after an initial transient. We discuss in detail the case of a quantum Ising chain periodically driven across the critical point, finding that, as a result of quantum coherence, the system never reaches an infinite temperature state. Floquet resonance effects are moreover observed in the frequency dependence of the various observables, which display a sequence of well-defined peaks or dip…
We present a general formulation of Floquet states of periodically time-dependent open Markovian quasi-free fermionic many-body systems in terms of a discrete Lyapunov equation. Illustrating the technique, we analyze periodically kicekd XY spin 1/2 chain which is coupled to a pair of Lindblad reservoirs at its ends. A complex phase diagram is reported with re-entrant phases of long range and exponentially decaying spin-spin correlations as some of the system's parameters are varied. The structure of phase diagram is reproduced in terms of counting non-trivial stationary points of Floquet quasi…
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
The Floquet-Magnus expansion is a useful tool to calculate an effective Hamiltonian for periodically driven systems. In this study, we investigate the convergence of the expansion for a one-body nonlinear system in a continuous space, a driven anharmonic oscillator. In this model, all eigenstates of the time evolution operator are found to be localized in energy space, and the expectation value of the energy is bounded from above. We first propose a general procedure to estimate the radius of convergence of the Floquet-Magnus expansion for periodically driven systems with an unbounded energy s…
We discuss dynamics of periodically-driven open quantum systems. The time evolution of the quantum state is described by the quantum master equation and the form of the dissipator is chosen so that the instantaneous stationary state is given by the Gibbs distribution. We find that the correlation between the population part and the coherence part of the density operator is induced by an adiabatic gauge potential. Although the introduction of the counterdiabatic term eliminates the correlation, additional correlations prevent a convergence to the Gibbs distribution. We study the performance of …
We analyse quasi-periodically driven quantum systems that can be mapped exactly to periodically driven ones and find Floquet Time Spirals in analogy with spatially incommensurate spiral magnetic states. Generalising the mechanism to many-body systems we discover that a form of discrete time-translation symmetry breaking can also occur in quasi-periodically driven systems. We construct a discrete time quasi-crystal stabilised by many-body localisation. Crucially, it persists also under perturbations that break the equivalence with periodic systems. As such it provides evidence of a stable quasi…
We investigate the long-time behavior of quantum N-level systems that are coupled to a Markovian environment and subject to periodic driving. As our main result, we obtain a general algebraic condition ensuring that all solutions of a periodic quantum master equation with Lindblad form approach a unique limit cycle. Quite intuitively, this criterion requires that the dissipative terms of the master equation connect all subspaces of the system Hilbert space during an arbitrarily small fraction of the cycle time. Our results provide a natural extension of Spohn's algebraic condition for the appr…
We introduce a model for a periodically driven electron pump that sequentially interact with an arbitrary number of heat and particle reservoirs. Exact expressions for the thermodynamic fluxes, such as entropy production and particle flows are derived arbitrarily far from equilibrium. We use the present model to perform a comparative study of thermodynamic uncertainty relations that are valid for systems with time-periodic driving.
We develop a flow renormalization approach for periodically-driven quantum systems, which reveals prethermal dynamical regimes and associated timescales via direct correspondence between real time and flow time behavior. In this formalism, the dynamical problem is recast in terms of coupling constants of the theory flowing towards an attractive fixed point that represents the thermal Floquet Hamiltonian at long times, while narrowly avoiding a series of unstable fixed points which determine distinct prethermal regimes at intermediate times. We study a class of relevant perturbations that trigg…
The violation of the Floquet version of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis is systematically discussed with realistic Hamiltonians. Our model is based on the PXP type interactions without disorder. We exactly prove the existence of many-body scar states in the Floquet eigenstates, by showing the explicit expressions of the wave functions. Using the underlying physical mechanism, various driven Hamiltonians with Floquet-scar states can be systematically engineered.
We derive general bounds on the linear response energy absorption rates of periodically driven many-body systems of spins or fermions on a lattice. We show that for systems with local interactions, energy absorption rate decays exponentially as a function of driving frequency in any number of spatial dimensions. These results imply that topological many-body states in periodically driven systems, although generally metastable, can have very long lifetimes. We discuss applications to other problems, including decay of highly energetic excitations in cold atomic and solid-state systems.
We show a new mechanism to extract energy from non-equilibrium fluctuations typical of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems. The transduction of energy between the driving force and the system is revealed by an \emph{anomalous} behavior of the susceptibility, leading to a diminution of the dissipated power and consequently to an improvement of the transport properties. The general framework is illustrated by the analysis of some relevant cases.
We study the large-time behavior of a class of periodically driven macroscopic systems. We find, for a certain range of the parameters of either the system or the driving fields, the time-averaged asymptotic behavior effectively is that of certain other equilibrium systems. We then illustrate with a few examples how the conventional knowledge of the equilibrium systems can be made use in choosing the driving fields to engineer new phases and to induce new phase transitions.
We present the stochastic thermodynamic analysis of a time-periodic single particle pump, including explicit results for flux, thermodynamic force, entropy production, work, heat and efficiency. These results are valid far from equilibrium. The deviations from the linear (Onsager) regime are discussed.
We consider the drift and diffusion properties of periodically driven renewal processes. These processes are defined by a periodically time dependent waiting time distribution, which governs the interval between subsequent events. We show that the growth of the cumulants of the number of events is asymptotically periodic and develop a theory which relates these periodic growth coefficients to the waiting time distribution defining the periodic renewal process. The first two coefficients, which are the mean frequency and effective diffusion coefficient of the number of events are considered in …
Understanding the equilibration of isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics is an interesting topic. In this paper, we look at the early time behaviour of periodically and quasi-periodically driven Transverse field Ising chains when and their corresponding dynamical free energies. We study the system under different frequencies and observe how the system evolves with changes in the field amplitudes in both types of oscillations.
We show that periodically driven superconducting vortices in the presence of quenched disorder exhibit a transition from reversible to irreversible flow under increasing vortex density or cycle period. This type of behavior has recently been observed for periodically sheared colloidal suspensions and we demonstrate that driven vortex systems exhibit remarkably similar behavior. We also provide evidence that the onset of irreversible behavior is a dynamical phase transition.
The theory of linear stochastic thermodynamics is developed for periodically driven systems in contact with a single reservoir. Appropriate thermodynamic forces and fluxes are identified, starting from the entropy production for a Markov process. Onsager coefficients are evaluated, the Onsager-Casimir relations are verified, and explicit expressions are given for an expansion in terms of Fourier components. The results are illustrated on a periodically modulated two level system including the optimization of the power output.
The periodically driven quantum Ising chain has recently attracted a large attention in the context of Floquet engineering. In addition to the common paramagnet and ferromagnet, this driven model can give rise to new topological phases. In this work we systematically explore its quantum phase diagram, by examining the properties of its Floquet ground state. We specifically focus on driving protocols with time-reversal invariant points, and demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of distinct phases. These phases are separated by second-order quantum phase transitions, accompanied by con…
We derive a linear thermodynamics theory for general Markov dynamics with both steady-state and time-periodic drivings. Expressions for thermodynamic quantities, such as mechanical and chemical work, heat and entropy production are obtained in terms of equilibrium probability distribution and the drivings. The entropy production is derived as a bilinear function of thermodynamic forces and the associated fluxes. We derive explicit formulae for the Onsager coefficients and use them to verify the Onsager-Casimir reciprocal relations. Our results are illustrated on a periodically driven quantum d…
We demonstrate ballistic spin transport of an integrable unitary quantum circuit, which can be understood either as a paradigm of an integrable periodically driven (Floquet) spin chain, or as a Trotterized anisotropic ($XXZ$) Heisenberg spin-1/2 model. We construct an analytic family of quasi-local conservation laws that break the spin-reversal symmetry and compute a lower bound on the spin Drude weight which is found to be a fractal function of the anisotropy parameter. Extensive numerical simulations of spin transport suggest that this fractal lower bound is in fact tight.
For periodically driven systems, we derive a family of inequalities that relate entropy production with experimentally accessible data for the mean, its dependence on driving frequency, and the variance of a large class of observables. With one of these relations, overall entropy production can be bounded by just observing the time spent in a set of states. Among further consequences, the thermodynamic efficiency both of isothermal cyclic engines like molecular motors under a periodic load and of cyclic heat engines can be bounded using experimental data without requiring knowledge of the spec…
We study the effect of noise-enhanced stability of periodically driven metastable states in a system described by piecewise linear potential. We find that the growing of the average escape time with the intensity of the noise is depending on the initial condition of the system. We analytically obtain the condition for the noise enhanced stability effect and verify it by numerical simulations.
Periodic driving is used to operate machines that go from standard macroscopic engines to small non-equilibrium micro-sized systems. Two classes of such systems are small heat engines driven by periodic temperature variations and molecular pumps driven by external stimuli. Well known results that are valid for nonequilibrium steady states of systems driven by fixed thermodynamic forces, instead of an external periodic driving, have been generalized to periodically driven heat engines only recently. These results include a general expression for entropy production in terms of currents and affin…
The Floquet eigenvalue problem is analyzed for periodically driven Friedrichs models on discrete and continuous space. In the high-frequency regime, there exists a Floquet bound state consistent with the Floquet-Magnus expansion in the discrete Friedrichs model, while it is not the case in the continuous model. In the latter case, however, the bound state predicted by the Floquet-Magnus expansion appears as a metastable state whose lifetime diverges in the limit of large frequencies. We obtain the lifetime by evaluating the imaginary part of the quasi-energy of the Floquet resonant state. In t…
We develop a theory to calculate the effective phase diffusion coefficient and the mean phase velocity in periodically driven stochastic models with two discrete states. This theory is applied to a dichotomically driven Markovian two state system. Explicit expressions for the mean phase velocity, the effective phase diffusion coefficient and the Péclet number are analytically calculated. The latter shows as a measure of phase-coherence forced synchronization of the stochastic system with respect to the periodic driving. In a second step the theory is applied to a non Markovian two state model …
Periodically driven (Floquet) systems are said to prethermalize when their energy absorption is very slow for long time. This effect was first discovered in quantum spin models, where the heating rate is exponentially small in the ratio between the driving frequency and the spin bandwidth. Recently, it was shown that prethermalization occurs also in classical systems with an infinite bandwidth. Here, we address the open question of which small parameter controls the lifetime of the prethermal state in these systems. We, first, numerically study the dependence of the lifetime on the initial con…
We study the fluctuations of systems modeled by Markov jump processes with periodic generators. We focus on observables defined through time-periodic functions of the system's states or transitions. Using large deviation theory, canonical biasing and generalized Doob transform, we characterize the asymptotic fluctuations of such observables after a large number of periods by obtaining the Markov process that produces them. We show that this process, called driven process, is the minimum under constraint of the large deviation function for occupation and jumps.
Small nonequelibrium systems driven by an external periodic protocol can be described by Markov processes with time-periodic transition rates. In general, current fluctuations in such small systems are large and may play a crucial role. We develop a theoretical formalism to evaluate the rate of such large deviations in periodically driven systems. We show that the scaled cumulant generating function that characterizes current fluctuations is given by a maximal Floquet exponent. Comparing deterministic protocols with stochastic protocols, we show that, with respect to large deviations, systems …
We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states ap…
We evaluate the Onsager matrix for a system under time-periodic driving by considering all its Fourier components. By application of the second law, we prove that all the fluxes converge to zero in the limit of zero dissipation. Reversible efficiency can never be reached at finite power. The implication for an Onsager matrix, describing reduced fluxes, is that its determinant has to vanish. In the particular case of only two fluxes, the corresponding Onsager matrix becomes symmetric.
Periodically driven systems are a common topic in modern physics. In optical lattices specifically, driving is at the origin of many interesting phenomena. However, energy is not conserved in driven systems, and under periodic driving, heating of a system is a real concern. In an effort to better understand this phenomenon, the heating of single-band systems has been studied, with a focus on disorder- and interaction-induced effects, such as many-body localisation. Nevertheless, driven systems occur in a much wider context than this, leaving room for further research. Here, we fill this gap by…
We investigate the asymptotic distributions of periodically driven anharmonic Langevin systems. Utilizing the underlying $SL_2$ symmetry of the Langevin dynamics, we develop a perturbative scheme in which the effect of periodic driving can be treated nonperturbatively to any order of perturbation in anharmonicity. We spell out the conditions under which the asymptotic distributions exist and are periodic, and show that the distributions can be determined exactly in terms of the solutions of the associated Hill equations. We further find that the oscillating states of these driven systems are s…
We demonstrate that the counting statistics of currents in periodically driven ergodic stochastic systems can show sharp changes of some of its properties in response to continuous changes of the driving protocol. To describe this effect, we introduce a new topological phase factor in evolution of the moment generating function which is akin to the topological geometric phase in evolution of a periodically driven quantum mechanical system with time-reversal symmetry. This phase leads to the prediction of a sign change for the difference of the probabilities to find even and odd number particle…
Quenched randomness can lead to robust non-equilibrium phases of matter in periodically driven (Floquet) systems. Analyzing transitions between such dynamical phases requires a method capable of treating the twin complexities of disorder and discrete time-translation symmetry. We introduce a real-space renormalization group approach, asymptotically exact in the strong-disorder limit, and exemplify its use on the periodically driven interacting quantum Ising model. We analyze the universal physics near the critical lines and multicritical point of this model, and demonstrate the robustness of o…
We study the large-time behaviour of Brownian particles moving through a viscous medium in a confined potential, and which are further subjected to position-dependent driving forces that are periodic in time. We focus on the case where these driving forces are rapidly oscillating with an amplitude that is not necessarily small. We develop a perturbative method for the high-frequency regime to find the large-time behavior of periodically driven stochastic systems. The asymptotic distribution of Brownian particles is then determined to second order. To first order, these particles are found to e…
Time-dependently driven stochastic systems form a vast and manifold class of non-equilibrium systems used to model important applications on small length scales such as bit erasure protocols or microscopic heat engines. One property that unites all these quite different systems is some form of lag between the driving of the system and its response. For periodic steady states, we quantify this lag by introducing a generalized phase difference and prove a tight upper bound for it. In its most general version, this bound depends only on the relative speed of the driving.
Quantum phases of matter have many relevant applications in quantum computation and quantum information processing. Current experimental feasibilities in diverse platforms allow us to couple two or more subsystems in different phases. In this letter, we investigate the situation where one couples two domains of a periodically-driven spin chain where one of them is ergodic while the other is fully localized. By combining tools of both graph and Floquet theory, we show that the localized domain remains stable for strong disorder, but as this disorder decreases the localized domain becomes ergodi…
Small nonequilibrium systems in contact with a heat bath can be analyzed with the framework of stochastic thermodynamics. In such systems, fluctuations, which are not negligible, follow universal relations such as the fluctuation theorem. More recently, it has been found that, for nonequilibrium stationary states, the full spectrum of fluctuations of any thermodynamic current is bounded by the average rate of entropy production and the average current. However, this bound does not apply to periodically driven systems, such as heat engines driven by periodic variation of the temperature and art…
It is proved that the energy absorption in a periodically driven classical spin system is exponentially slow in frequency, which results in a two-step relaxation called the Floquet prethermalization. This result is shown by establishing the classical limit of the quantum spin dynamics. The Floquet prethermal state is well described by the Gibbs ensemble with respect to the static effective Hamiltonian obtained by a truncation of the Floquet-Magnus expansion. On the other hand, the same effective Hamiltonian does not reproduce the local dynamics for an exponentially long time. This is due to th…
Dynamic behavior of a site diluted Ising ferromagnet in the presence of periodically oscillating magnetic field has been analyzed by means of the effective field theory (EFT). Dynamic equation of motion have been solved for a honeycomb lattice ($z=3$) with the help of a Glauber type stochastic process. The global phase diagrams and the variation of the corresponding dynamic order parameter as a function of the Hamiltonian parameters and temperature has been investigated in detail and it has been shown that the system exhibits reentrant phenomena, as well as a dynamic tricritical point which di…
We introduce a switching mechanism in the asymptotic occupations of quantum states induced by the combined effects of a periodic driving and a weak coupling to a heat bath. It exploits one of the ubiquitous avoided crossings in driven systems and works even if both involved Floquet states have small occupations. It is independent of the initial state and the duration of the driving. As a specific example of this general switching mechanism we show how an asymmetric double well potential can be switched between the lower and the upper well by a periodic driving that is much weaker than the asym…
We study the response of one dimensional diffusive systems, consisting of particles interacting via symmetric or asymmetric exclusion, to time-periodic driving from two reservoirs coupled to the ends. The dynamical response of the system can be characterized in terms of the structure factor. We find an interesting frequency dependent response -- the current carrying majority excitons cyclically crosses over from a short wavelength mode to a long wavelength mode with an intermediate regime of coexistence. This effect being boundary driven, decays inversely with system size. Analytic calculation…
Driven diffusive systems have provided simple models for non-equilibrium systems with non-trivial structures. Steady state behaviour of these systems with constant boundary conditions have been studied extensively. Comparatively less work has been carried out on the responses of these systems to time dependent parameters. We report the modifications to the probability density function of a two particle exclusion model in response to a periodically changing perturbation to its boundary conditions. The changes in the shape of the distribution as a function of the frequency of the perturbation co…
We study probability distribution of a steady state of a periodically driven system coupled to a thermal bath by using a quantum master equation in the weak coupling limit. It is proved that, even when the external field is strong, the probability distribution is independent of the detailed nature of the thermal bath under the following conditions: (i) the Hamiltonian of the relevant system is bounded and the period of the driving field is short, (ii) the Hamiltonians for the driving field at different times commute, and (iii) the Hamiltonians of the driving field and of the interaction betwee…
Periodically driven quantum matter can realize exotic dynamical phases. In order to understand how ubiquitous and robust these phases are, it is pertinent to investigate the heating dynamics of generic interacting quantum systems. Here we study the thermalization in a periodically-driven generalized Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK)-model, which realizes a crossover from a heavy Fermi liquid (FL) to a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) at a tunable energy scale. Developing an exact field theoretic approach, we determine two distinct regimes in the heating dynamics. While the NFL heats exponentially and thermalizes …
The emergence of particle irreversibility in periodically driven colloidal suspensions has been interpreted as resulting either from a nonequilibrium phase transition to an absorbing state or from the chaotic nature of particle trajectories. Using a simple model of a driven suspension we show that a nonequilibrium phase transition is accompanied by hyperuniform static density fluctuations in the vicinity of the transition, where we also observe strong dynamic heterogeneities reminiscent of dynamics in glassy materials. We find that single particle dynamics becomes intermittent and strongly non…
We derive the fluctuation theorem for a stochastic and periodically driven system coupled to two reservoirs with the aid of a master equation. We write down the cumulant generating functions for both the current and entropy production in closed compact forms so as to treat the adiabatic and nonadiabatic contributions systematically. We derive the fluctuation theorem by taking into account the time reversal symmetry and the property that the instantaneous currents flowing into the left and the right reservoir are not equal. It is found that the fluctuation-dissipation relation derived from the …
We examine skyrmions driven periodically over random quenched disorder and show that there is a transition from reversible motion to a state in which the skyrmion trajectories are chaotic or irreversible. We find that the characteristic time required for the system to organize into a steady reversible or irreversible state exhibits a power law divergence near a critical ac drive period, with the same exponent as that observed for reversible to irreversible transitions in periodically sheared colloidal systems, suggesting that the transition can be described as an absorbing phase transition in …
Molecular dynamics simulations allow to study the structure and dynamics of single biomolecules in microscopic detail. However, many processes occur on time scales beyond the reach of fully atomistic simulations and require coarse-grained multiscale models. While systematic approaches to construct such models have become available, these typically rely on microscopic dynamics that obey detailed balance. In vivo, however, biomolecules are constantly driven away from equilibrium in order to perform specific functions and thus break detailed balance. Here we introduce a method to construct Markov…
Motivated to understand the asymptotic behavior of periodically driven thermodynamic systems, we study the prototypical example of Brownian particle, overdamped and underdamped, in harmonic potentials subjected to periodic driving. The harmonic strength and the coefficients of drift and diffusion are all taken to be $T$-periodic. We obtain the asymptotic distributions almost exactly treating driving nonperturbatively. In the underdamped case, we exploit the underlying $SL_2$ symmetry to obtain the asymptotic state, and study the dynamics and fluctuations of energies and entropy. We further obt…
We study Markovian stochastic motion on a graph with finite number of nodes and adiabatically periodically driven transition rates. We show that, under general conditions, the quantized currents that appear at low temperatures are a manifestation of topological invariants in the counting statistics of currents. This observation provides an approach for classification of topological properties of the counting statistics, as well as for extensions of the phenomenon of the robust quantization of currents at low temperatures to the properties of the counting statistics which persist to finite temp…
