We derive the fluctuation theorem for a stochastic and periodically driven system coupled to two reservoirs with the aid of a master equation. We write down the cumulant generating functions for both the current and entropy production in closed compact forms so as to treat the adiabatic and nonadiabatic contributions systematically. We derive the fluctuation theorem by taking into account the time reversal symmetry and the property that the instantaneous currents flowing into the left and the right reservoir are not equal. It is found that the fluctuation-dissipation relation derived from the fluctuation theorem involves an expansion with respect to the time derivative of the affinity.
We study Markovian stochastic motion on a graph with finite number of nodes and adiabatically periodically driven transition rates. We show that, under general conditions, the quantized currents that appear at low temperatures are a manifestation of topological invariants in the counting statistics of currents. This observation provides an approach for classification of topological properties of the counting statistics, as well as for extensions of the phenomenon of the robust quantization of currents at low temperatures to the properties of the counting statistics which persist to finite temp…
We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states ap…
We study a model of isothermal steady-state work-to-work converter, where a single quantum two-level system (TLS) driven by time-dependent periodic external fields acts as the working medium and is permanently put in contact with a thermal reservoir at fixed temperature $T$. By combining Short-Iterative Lanczos (SIL) method and analytic approaches, we study the converter performance in the linear response regime and in a wide range of driving frequencies, from weak to strong dissipation. We show that for our ideal quantum machine several parameter ranges exist where a violation of Thermodynami…
We introduce a switching mechanism in the asymptotic occupations of quantum states induced by the combined effects of a periodic driving and a weak coupling to a heat bath. It exploits one of the ubiquitous avoided crossings in driven systems and works even if both involved Floquet states have small occupations. It is independent of the initial state and the duration of the driving. As a specific example of this general switching mechanism we show how an asymmetric double well potential can be switched between the lower and the upper well by a periodic driving that is much weaker than the asym…
We derive general relations between maximum power, maximum efficiency, and minimum dissipation regimes from linear irreversible thermodynamics. The relations simplify further in the presence of a particular symmetry of the Onsager matrix, which can be derived from detailed balance. The results are illustrated on a periodically driven system and a three terminal device subject to an external magnetic field.
Laser technology has developed and accelerated photo-induced nonequilibrium physics from both scientific and engineering viewpoints. The Floquet engineering, i.e., controlling material properties and functionalities by time-periodic drives, is a forefront of quantum physics of light-matter interaction, but limited to ideal dissipationless systems. For the Floquet engineering extended to a variety of materials, it is vital to understand the quantum states emerging in a balance of the periodic drive and energy dissipation. Here we derive the general description for nonequilibrium steady states (…
We evaluate the Onsager matrix for a system under time-periodic driving by considering all its Fourier components. By application of the second law, we prove that all the fluxes converge to zero in the limit of zero dissipation. Reversible efficiency can never be reached at finite power. The implication for an Onsager matrix, describing reduced fluxes, is that its determinant has to vanish. In the particular case of only two fluxes, the corresponding Onsager matrix becomes symmetric.
Periodically driven coherent conductors provide a universal platform for the development of quantum transport devices. Here, we lay down a comprehensive theory to describe the thermodynamics of these systems. We first focus on moderate thermo-electrical biases and low driving frequencies. For this linear response regime, we establish generalized Onsager-Casimir relations and an extended fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Furthermore, we derive a family of thermodynamic bounds proving that any local matter or heat current puts a non-trivial lower limit on the overall dissipation rate of a coheren…
We present a general formulation of Floquet states of periodically time-dependent open Markovian quasi-free fermionic many-body systems in terms of a discrete Lyapunov equation. Illustrating the technique, we analyze periodically kicekd XY spin 1/2 chain which is coupled to a pair of Lindblad reservoirs at its ends. A complex phase diagram is reported with re-entrant phases of long range and exponentially decaying spin-spin correlations as some of the system's parameters are varied. The structure of phase diagram is reproduced in terms of counting non-trivial stationary points of Floquet quasi…
We investigate a long time asymptotic state of periodically driven open quantum systems analytically. The model we consider in this paper is a free fermionic system coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. We clarify some generic properties of the system which are independent of the details of the reservoir in the high frequency regime of the external driving. When the frequency of the external driving is much larger than the energy cutoff of the system-reservoir coupling, the low-energy properties of the system are equivalent to those of the Gibbs distribution of a Floquet effective Hamil…
We study experimentally the fluctuations of the injected and dissipated energy in a system of a colloidal particle trapped in a double well potential periodically modulated by an external perturbation. The work done by the external force and the dissipated energy are measured close to the stochastic resonance where the injected power is maximum. We show that the steady state fluctuation theorem holds in this system.
As a paradigmatic model of open quantum system, the spin-boson model is widely used in theoretical and experimental investigations. Beyond the weak coupling limit, the spin dynamics can be described by a time-nonlocal generalized master equation with a memory kernel accounting for the dissipative effects induced by the bosonic environment. When the spin is additionally modulated by an external time-periodic electromagnetic field, the interplay between dissipation and modulations yields a spectrum of nontrivial asymptotic states, especially in the regime of nonlinear response. Here we implement…
We derive a general expression for the cumulant generating function (CGF) of non-Markovian quantum stochastic transport processes. The long-time limit of the CGF is determined by a single dominating pole of the resolvent of the memory kernel from which we extract the zero-frequency cumulants of the current using a recursive scheme. The finite-frequency noise is expressed not only in terms of the resolvent, but also initial system-environment correlations. As an illustrative example we consider electron transport through a dissipative double quantum dot for which we study the effects of dissipa…
We provide a detailed investigation on the fluctuations of the currents in the discrete model of Feynman's ratchet proposed by Jarzynski and Mazonka in 1999. Two macroscopic currents are identified, with the corresponding affinities determined using Schnakenberg's graph analysis. We also investigate full counting statistics of the two currents and show that fluctuation theorem holds for their joint probability distribution. Moreover, fluctuation-dissipation relation, Onsager reciprocal relation and their nonlinear generalizations are numerically shown to be satisfied in this model.
Periodic driving is used to operate machines that go from standard macroscopic engines to small non-equilibrium micro-sized systems. Two classes of such systems are small heat engines driven by periodic temperature variations and molecular pumps driven by external stimuli. Well known results that are valid for nonequilibrium steady states of systems driven by fixed thermodynamic forces, instead of an external periodic driving, have been generalized to periodically driven heat engines only recently. These results include a general expression for entropy production in terms of currents and affin…
We demonstrate that the counting statistics of currents in periodically driven ergodic stochastic systems can show sharp changes of some of its properties in response to continuous changes of the driving protocol. To describe this effect, we introduce a new topological phase factor in evolution of the moment generating function which is akin to the topological geometric phase in evolution of a periodically driven quantum mechanical system with time-reversal symmetry. This phase leads to the prediction of a sign change for the difference of the probabilities to find even and odd number particle…
We apply the quantum jump approach to address the statistics of work in a driven two-level system coupled to a heat bath. We demonstrate how this question can be analyzed by counting photons absorbed and emitted by the environment in repeated experiments. We find that the common non-equilibrium fluctuation relations are satisfied identically. The usual fluctuation-dissipation theorem for linear response applies for weak dissipation and/or weak drive. We point out qualitative differences between the classical and quantum regimes.
Periodically driven quantum systems host a range of non-equilibrium phenomena which are unrealizable at equilibrium. Discrete time-translational symmetry in a periodically driven many-body system can be spontaneously broken to form a discrete time crystal, a putative quantum phase of matter. We present the observation of discrete time crystalline order in a driven system of paramagnetic $P$ -donor impurities in isotopically enriched $^{28}Si$ cooled below $10$ K. The observations exhibit a stable subharmonic peak at half the drive frequency which remains pinned even in the presence of pulse er…
Several recent inequalities bound the precision of a current - counting net number of transitions in a system - by a thermodynamic measure of dissipation. However, while currents may be defined locally, dissipation is a global property. Inspired by the fact that ever since Carnot cycles are the unit elements of thermodynamic processes, we prove similar bounds tailored to cycle currents - counting net cycle completions - in terms of their conjugate affinities. We show that these inequalities are stricter than previous ones, even far from equilibrium, and that they allow to tighten those on tran…
Recent large deviation results have provided general lower bounds for the fluctuations of time-integrated currents in the steady state of stochastic systems. A corollary are so-called thermodynamic uncertainty relations connecting precision of estimation to average dissipation. Here we consider this problem but for counting observables, i.e., trajectory observables which, in contrast to currents, are non-negative and non-decreasing in time (and possibly symmetric under time reversal). In the steady state, their fluctuations to all orders are bound from below by a Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distrib…
Thermodynamics of nanoscale devices is an active area of research. Despite their noisy surrounding they often produce mechanical work (e.g. micro-heat engines), display rectified Brownian motion (e.g. molecular motors). This invokes research in terms of experimentally quantifiable thermodynamic efficiencies. Here, a Brownian particle is driven by a harmonic confinement with time-periodic contraction and expansion. The system produces work by being alternately (time-periodically) connected to baths with different dissipations. We analyze the system theoretically using stochastic thermodynamics.…
We study the asymptotic and pre-asymptotic diffusive properties of Brownian particles in channels whose section varies periodically in space. The effective diffusion coefficient $D_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is numerically determined by the asymptotic behavior of the root mean square displacement in different geometries, considering even cases of steep variations of the channel boundaries. Moreover, we compared the numerical results to the predictions from the various corrections proposed in the literature to the well known Fick-Jacobs approximation. Building an effective one dimensional equation for the…
Fluctuations of thermodynamic quantities become non-negligible and play an important role when the system size is small. We develop finite-time thermodynamics of fluctuations in microscopic heat engines whose environmental temperature and mechanical parameter are driven periodically in time. Within the slow-driving regime, this formalism universally holds in a coarse-grained time scale whose resolution is much longer than the correlation time of the fluctuations, and is shown to be consistent with the relation analogous to the fluctuation-dissipation relation. Employing a geometric argument, a…
We analyze the time-dependent energy and heat flows in a resonant level coupled to a fermionic continuum. The level is periodically forced with an external power source that supplies energy into the system. Based on the tunneling Hamiltonian approach and scattering theory, we discuss the different contributions to the total energy flux. We then derive the appropriate expression for the dynamical dissipation, in accordance with the fundamental principles of thermodynamics. Remarkably, we find that the dissipated heat can be expressed as a Joule law with a universal resistance that is constant a…
We investigate the conditions under which periodically driven quantum systems subject to dissipation exhibit a stable subharmonic response. Noting that coupling to a bath introduces not only cooling but also noise, we point out that a system subject to the latter for the entire cycle tends to lose coherence of the subharmonic oscillations, and thereby the long-time temporal symmetry breaking. We provide an example of a short-ranged two-dimensional system which does not suffer from this and therefore displays persistent subharmonic oscillations stabilised by the dissipation. We also show that t…

Discrete time crystals are periodically driven systems that display spontaneous symmetry breaking of time translation invariance in the form of indefinite subharmonic oscillations. We introduce a thermodynamically consistent model for a discrete time crystal and analyze it using the framework of stochastic thermodynamics. In particular, we evaluate the rate of energy dissipation of this many body system of interacting noisy subharmonic oscillators in contact with a heat bath. Our model displays the novel phenomena of subharmonic synchronization, which corresponds to collective subharmonic osci…
A trade-off between the precision of an arbitrary current and the dissipation, known as the thermodynamic uncertainty relation, has been investigated for various Markovian systems. Here, we study the thermodynamic uncertainty relation for underdamped Langevin dynamics. By employing information inequalities, we prove that, for such systems, the relative fluctuation of a current at a steady state is constrained by both the entropy production and the average dynamical activity. We find that, unlike what is the case for overdamped dynamics, the dynamical activity plays an important role in the bou…
We consider a dissipative quantum Ising model periodically driven by a train of $π$-pulses and investigate dissipative discrete time crystals (DTCs) in solids. In this model, the interaction between the spins spontaneously breaks the discrete time translation symmetry, giving rise to a dissipative DTC, where two ferromagnetic states are switched alternately by each pulse. We microscopically describe the generic dissipation due to thermal contact to an equilibrium heat bath using the Bloch-Redfield equation. In contrast to other DTC studies, this dissipation stabilizes, rather than destroys, th…
We study the dynamics of a simple adaptive system in the presence of noise and periodic damping. The system is composed by two paths connecting a source and a sink, the dynamics is governed by equations that usually describe food search of the paradigmatic Physarum polycephalum. In this work we assume that the two paths undergo damping whose relative strength is periodically modulated in time and analyse the dynamics in the presence of stochastic forces simulating Gaussian noise. We identify different responses depending on the modulation frequency and on the noise amplitude. At frequencies sm…
Oscillations in nonequilibrium noisy systems are important physical phenomena. These oscillations can happen in autonomous biochemical oscillators such as circadian clocks. They can also manifest as subharmonic oscillations in periodically driven systems such as time-crystals. Oscillations in autonomous systems and, to a lesser degree, subharmonic oscillations in periodically driven systems have been both thoroughly investigated, including their relation with thermodynamic cost and noise. We perform a systematic study of oscillations in a third class of nonequilibrium systems: feedback driven …
Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs) are recently established relations between the relative uncertainty of time-integrated currents and entropy production in nonequilibrium systems. For small perturbations away from equilibrium, linear response (LR) theory provides the natural framework to study generic nonequilibrium processes. Here we use LR to derive TURs in a straightforward and unified way. Our approach allows us to generalize TURs to systems without local time reversal symmetry, including, for example, ballistic transport, and periodically driven classical and quantum systems. We …

From synthetic active devices such as self-propelling Janus colloids to micro-organisms like bacteria, micro-algae, living cells in tissues, active fluctuations are ubiquitous. Thermodynamics of small systems involving thermal as well as active fluctuations are of immense importance. They can be employed to extract thermodynamic work. Here we propose a simple model system that can produce thermodynamic work exploiting active fluctuations. We consider a Brownian particle, trapped by an externally controlled harmonic confinement which time-periodically contracts and expands by modulating its spr…
