Discrete time crystals are periodically driven systems that display spontaneous symmetry breaking of time translation invariance in the form of indefinite subharmonic oscillations. We introduce a thermodynamically consistent model for a discrete time crystal and analyze it using the framework of stochastic thermodynamics. In particular, we evaluate the rate of energy dissipation of this many body system of interacting noisy subharmonic oscillators in contact with a heat bath. Our model displays the novel phenomena of subharmonic synchronization, which corresponds to collective subharmonic oscillations of the individual units.
Subharmonic response is a well known phenomena in, e.g., deterministic nonlinear dynamical systems. We investigate the conditions under which such subharmonic oscillations can persist for a long time in open systems with stochastic dynamics due to thermal fluctuations. In contrast to stochastic autonomous systems in a stationary state, for which the number of coherent oscillations is fundamentally bounded by the number of states in the underlying network, we demonstrate that in periodically driven systems, subharmonic oscillations can, in principle, remain coherent forever, even in networks wi…
We investigate the conditions under which periodically driven quantum systems subject to dissipation exhibit a stable subharmonic response. Noting that coupling to a bath introduces not only cooling but also noise, we point out that a system subject to the latter for the entire cycle tends to lose coherence of the subharmonic oscillations, and thereby the long-time temporal symmetry breaking. We provide an example of a short-ranged two-dimensional system which does not suffer from this and therefore displays persistent subharmonic oscillations stabilised by the dissipation. We also show that t…
We show the emergence of Floquet time crystal (FTC) phases in the Floquet dynamics of periodically driven $p$-spin models, which describe a collection of spin-1/2 particles with all-to-all $p$-body interactions. Given the mean-field nature of these models, we treat the problem exactly in the thermodynamic limit and show that, for a given $p$, these systems can host various robust time-crystalline responses with period $nT$, where $T$ is the period of the drive and $n$ an integer between 2 and $p$. In particular, the case of four-body interactions ($p=4$) gives rise to both a usual period-doubl…
Oscillations in nonequilibrium noisy systems are important physical phenomena. These oscillations can happen in autonomous biochemical oscillators such as circadian clocks. They can also manifest as subharmonic oscillations in periodically driven systems such as time-crystals. Oscillations in autonomous systems and, to a lesser degree, subharmonic oscillations in periodically driven systems have been both thoroughly investigated, including their relation with thermodynamic cost and noise. We perform a systematic study of oscillations in a third class of nonequilibrium systems: feedback driven …
Driven many-body systems have been shown to exhibit discrete time crystal phases characterized by broken discrete time-translational symmetry. This has been achieved generally through a subharmonic response, in which the system undergoes one oscillation every other driving period. Here, we demonstrate that classical time crystals do not need to resonate in a subharmonic fashion but instead can also exhibit a continuously tunable anharmonic response to driving, which we show can emerge through a coresonance between modes in different branches of the dispersion relation in a parametrically drive…

The control of many-body quantum dynamics in complex systems is a key challenge in the quest to reliably produce and manipulate large-scale quantum entangled states. Recently, quench experiments in Rydberg atom arrays (Bluvstein et. al., arXiv:2012.12276) demonstrated that coherent revivals associated with quantum many-body scars can be stabilized by periodic driving, generating stable subharmonic responses over a wide parameter regime. We analyze a simple, related model where these phenomena originate from spatiotemporal ordering in an effective Floquet unitary, corresponding to discrete time…
The spontaneous breaking of time-translation symmetry in periodically driven quantum systems leads to a new phase of matter: discrete time crystals (DTC). This phase exhibits collective subharmonic oscillations that depend upon an interplay of non-equilibrium driving, many-body interactions, and the breakdown of ergodicity. However, subharmonic responses are also a well-known feature of classical dynamical systems ranging from predator-prey models to Faraday waves and AC-driven charge density waves. This raises the question of whether these classical phenomena display the same rigidity charact…
We describe a possible general and simple paradigm in a classical thermal setting for discrete time crystals (DTCs), systems with stable dynamics which is subharmonic to the driving frequency thus breaking discrete time-translational invariance. We consider specifically an Ising model in two dimensions, as a prototypical system with a phase transition into stable phases distinguished by a local order parameter, driven by a thermal dynamics and periodically kicked. We show that for a wide parameter range a stable DTC emerges. The phase transition to the DTC state appears to be in the equilibriu…
Periodically driven quantum systems host a range of non-equilibrium phenomena which are unrealizable at equilibrium. Discrete time-translational symmetry in a periodically driven many-body system can be spontaneously broken to form a discrete time crystal, a putative quantum phase of matter. We present the observation of discrete time crystalline order in a driven system of paramagnetic $P$ -donor impurities in isotopically enriched $^{28}Si$ cooled below $10$ K. The observations exhibit a stable subharmonic peak at half the drive frequency which remains pinned even in the presence of pulse er…
Symmetry-breaking dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) abound in the fluctuations of nonequilibrium systems. Here we show that the spectral features of a particular class of DPTs exhibit the fingerprints of the recently discovered time-crystal phase of matter. Using Doob's transform as a tool, we provide a mechanism to build time-crystal generators from the rare event statistics of some driven diffusive systems. An analysis of the Doob's smart field in terms of the order parameter of the transition then leads to the time-crystal exclusion process (tcEP), a stochastic lattice gas subject to an ex…

Despite being forbidden in equilibrium, spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry can occur in periodically driven, Floquet systems with discrete time-translation symmetry. The period of the resulting discrete time crystal is quantized to an integer multiple of the drive period, arising from a combination of collective synchronization and many body localization. Here, we consider a simple model for a one dimensional discrete time crystal which explicitly reveals the rigidity of the emergent oscillations as the drive is varied. We numerically map out its phase diagram and compute the pr…
We reveal a continuous dynamical heating transition between a prethermal and an infinite-temperature stage in a clean, chaotic periodically driven classical spin chain. The transition time is a steep exponential function of the drive frequency, showing that the exponentially long-lived prethermal plateau, originally observed in quantum Floquet systems, survives the classical limit. Even though there is no straightforward generalization of Floquet's theorem to nonlinear systems, we present strong evidence that the prethermal physics is well described by the inverse-frequency expansion. We relat…
