On a compact $\partial\bar\partial$-manifold $X$, one has the Hodge decomposition: the de Rham cohomology groups split into subspaces of pure-type classes as $H_{dR}^k (X)=\oplus_{p+q=k}H^{p,\,q}(X)$, where the $H^{p,\,q}(X)$ are canonically isomorphic to the Dolbeault cohomology groups $H_{\bar\partial}^{p,\,q}(X)$. For an arbitrary nonnegative integer $r$, we introduce the class of page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds by requiring the analogue of the Hodge decomposition to hold on a compact complex manifold $X$ when the usual Dolbeault cohomology groups $H^{p,\,q}_{\bar\partial}(X)$ are replaced by the spaces $E_{r+1}^{p,\,q}(X)$ featuring on the $(r+1)$-st page of the Frölicher spectral sequence of $X$. The class of page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds coincides with the usual class of $\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds when $r=0$ but may increase as $r$ increases. We give two kinds of applications. On the one hand, we give a purely numerical characterisation of the page-$r$-$\partial\bar\partial$-property in terms of dimensions of various cohomology vector spaces. On the other hand, we obtain several classes of examples, including all complex parallelisable nilmanifolds and certain families of solvmanifolds and abelian nilmanifolds. Further, there are general results about the behaviour of this new class under standard constructions like blow-ups and deformations.
We show the vanishing of the log-term in the Fefferman expansion of the Bergman kernel of the disk bundle over a compact simply-connected homogeneous Kaehler--Einstein manifold of classical type.
We prove the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations, the hard Lefschetz theorem and the Lefschetz decomposition for compact Kahler manifolds in the mixed situation.
The nonabelian Hodge correspondence (Corlette-Simpson correspondence), between the polystable Higgs bundles with vanishing Chern classes on a compact Kähler manifold $X$ and the completely reducible flat connections on $X$, is extended to the Fujiki class $\mathcal C$ manifolds.
We prove the Hodge symmetry type result on the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in the direct sum of holomorphic line bundles. Consequently, we show the vanishing and non-vanishing of Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in holomorphic line bundles.
For complex parallelisable manifolds $Γ\backslash G$, with $G$ a solvable or semisimple complex Lie group, the Frölicher spectral sequence degenerates at the second page. In the solvable case, the de-Rham cohomology carries a pure Hodge structure. In contrast, in the semisimple case, purity depends on the lattice, but there is always a direct summand of the de Rham cohomology which does carry a pure Hodge structure and is independent of the lattice.
A systematic study of the contributions at infinity for the cohomology of variations of polarized Hodge structures over quasicompact Kähler manifolds. Several isomorphisms between different cohomologies given.
We review the recent development of Hodge theory for almost complex manifolds. This includes the determination of whether the Hodge numbers defined by $\bar\partial$-Laplacian are almost complex, almost Kähler, or birational invariants in dimension four.
Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau threefold. A conifold transition first contracts $X$ along disjoint rational curves with normal bundles of type $(-1,-1)$, and then smooth the resulting singular complex space $\bar{X}$ to a new compact complex manifold $Y$. Such $Y$ is called a Clemens manifold and can be non-Kähler. We prove that any small smoothing $Y$ of $\bar{X}$ satisfies $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma. We also show that the resulting pure Hodge structure of weight three on $H^3(Y)$ is polarized by the cup product. These results answer some questions of R. Friedman.
We establish the Hodge conjecture for the top dimensional cohomology group with integer coefficients of any $q$-complete complex manifold $X$ with $q<\dim X$. This holds in particular for the complement $X=\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n\setminus A$ of any complex projective manifold defined by $q<n$ independent equations.
We give a complex polarized variation of Hodge structure over a compact K"ahler manifold $M$ which controls all finite-dimensional complex polarized variations of Hodge structure over $M$ and their tensor relations. As a corollary, we obtain the cohomology algebra with values in a local system admitting multiplicative Hodge structures.
We establish a compact analog of the P = W conjecture. For a holomorphic symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration, we show that the perverse numbers associated with the fibration match perfectly with the Hodge numbers of the total space. This builds a new connection between the topology of Lagrangian fibrations and the Hodge theory of hyper-Kähler manifolds. We present two applications of our result, one on the topology of the base and fibers of a Lagrangian fibration, the other on the refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of a K3 surface. Furthermore, we show that the perverse filtration as…
We study the generic Hodge groups $\Hg(\sX)$ of local universal deformations $\sX$ of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with onedimensional complex moduli, give a complete list of all possible choices for $\Hg(\sX)_{\R}$ and determine the latter real groups for known examples.
This note is inspired by the work of Deligne on the local behavior of Hodge structures at infinity. We study limit mixed Hodge structures of degenerating families of compact hyperkähler manifolds. We show that when the monodromy action on $H^2$ has maximal index of unipotency, the limit mixed Hodge structures on all cohomology groups are of Hodge-Tate type.
Let X be a complex algebraic manifold of dimension n+1 embedded in a sufficiently higher dimensional complex projective space, and Y a generic hyperplane section of X. We describe the mixed Hodge structure on H^p(X-Y,C) and the Hodge filtration of the middle primitive cohomology group H^n(Y,C)_0 of Y in terms of rational integrals on X. We determine the structure of the Hodge ring, a natural object encoding the Hodge numbers of all compact Kaehler manifolds. As a consequence of this structure, there are no unexpected relations among the Hodge numbers, and no essential differences between the Hodge numbers of smooth complex projective varieties and those of arbitrary Kaehler manifolds. The consideration of certain natural ideals in the Hodge ring allows us to determine exactly which linear combinations of Hodge numbers are birationally invariant, and which are topological invariants. Combining the Hodge and unitary bordism rin…
We treat two quite different problems related to changes of complex structures on Kähler manifolds by using global geometric method. First, by using operators from Hodge theory on compact Kähler manifold, we present a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic canonical forms in different complex structures. As applications, we give a closed explicit formula for certain canonical sections of Hodge bundles on marked and polarized moduli spaces of projective manifolds, and provide a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic pluricanonical forms under certain natural conditions. Se…
We extend the results of generic vanishing theory to polarizable real Hodge modules on compact complex tori, and from there to arbitrary compact Kähler manifolds. As applications, we obtain a bimeromorphic characterization of compact complex tori among compact Kähler manifolds, semi-positivity results, and a description of the Leray filtration for maps to tori.
The purpose of this note is to give an account of a well-known folklore result: the Hodge structure on the second cohomology of a compact hyperkähler manifold uniquely determines Hodge structures on all higher cohomology groups. We discuss the precise statement and its proof, which are somewhat difficult to locate in the literature.
We extend the notion of essential deformations from the case of the Iwasawa manifold, for which they were introduced recently by the first-named author, to the general case of page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds that were jointly introduced very recently by all three authors. We go on to obtain an analogue of the unobstructedness theorem of Bogomolov, Tian and Todorov for page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds. As applications of this discussion, we study the small deformations of certain Nakamura solvmanifolds and reinterpret the cases of the Iwasawa manifold and its $5$-dimensional …
Summary: The Hodge conjecture asks whether rational Hodge classes on a smooth projective manifolds are generated by the classes of algebraic subsets, or equivalently by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. On a compact Kaehler manifold, Hodge conjecture is known to be false if algebraic subsets are replaced with analytic subsets. Here we show that it is even false that for a Kaehler manifold, Hodge classes are generated by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. We also show that finite free resolution do not in general exist for coherent sheaves on compact Kaehler manifolds.
Based on work of R. Lazarsfeld and M. Popa, we use the derivative complex associated to the bundle of the holomorphic p-forms to provide inequalities for all the Hodge numbers of a special class of irregular compact Kaehler manifolds. For 3-folds and 4-folds we give an asymptotic bound for all the Hodge numbers in terms of the irregularity. As a byproduct, via the BGG correspondence, we also bound the regularity of the exterior cohomology modules of bundles of holomorphic p-forms.
This is a written-up version of eight introductory lectures to the Hodge theory of projective manifolds. The table of contents should be self-explanatory. The only exception is section 8 where I discuss, in a simple example, a technique for studying the class map for homology classes on the fibers of a map and one for approximating a certain kind of primitive vectors.
We explain the homological relation between the Frobenius structure on the deformation space of Calabi-Yau manifold and the gauge theory of Kodaira-Spencer gravity. We show that the genus zero generating function of descendant invariants on Calabi-Yau manifolds from Barannikov's semi-infinite variation of Hodge structures is equivalent to the Kodaira-Spencer gauge theory at tree level.
Let (M,I, ω, Ω) be a nearly Kaehler 6-manifold, that is, an SU(3)-manifold with the (3,0)-form Ωand the Hermitian form ωwhich satisfies $dω=3λ\ReΩ, d\ImΩ=-2λω^2$, for a non-zero real constant λ. We develop an analogue of Kaehler relations on M, proving several useful identities for various intrinsic Laplacians on M. When M is compact, these identities bring powerful results about cohomology of M. We show that harmonic forms on M admit the Hodge decomposition, and prove that H^{p,q}(M)=0 unless p=q or (p=1, q=2) or (p=2, q=1).
Short survey based on talk given at the Institut Henri Poincare January 17th 2012, during program on surface groups. The aim was to describe some background results before describing in detail (in subsequent talks) the results of [Boa11c] related to wild character varieties and irregular mapping class groups.
Calabi--Yau manifolds have risen to prominence in algebraic geometry, in part because of mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry. After Bershadsky--Cecotti--Ooguri--Vafa (BCOV), it is expected that genus 1 curve counting on a Calabi--Yau manifold is related to a conjectured invariant, only depending on the complex structure of the mirror, and built from Ray--Singer holomorphic analytic torsions. To this end, extending work of Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa in dimension 3, we introduce and study the BCOV invariant of Calabi--Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimension. To determine it, knowledge of its behaviou…
The transcendental Hodge lattice of a projective manifold $M$ is the smallest Hodge substructure in $p$-th cohomology which contains all holomorphic $p$-forms. We prove that the direct sum of all transcendental Hodge lattices has a natural algebraic structure, and compute this algebra explicitly for a hyperkahler manifold. As an application, we obtain a theorem about dimension of a compact torus $T$ admitting a symplectic embedding to a hyperkahler manifold $M$. If $M$ is generic in a $d$-dimensional family of deformations, then $\dim T\geq 2^{[(d+1)/2]}$.
We study the moduli space M(G,A) of flat G-bundles on an Abelian surface A, where G is a compact, simple, simply connected, connected Lie group. Equivalently, M(G,A) is the (coarse) moduli space of s-equivalence classes of holomorphic semi-stable G_C-bundles with trivial Chern classes where G_C is the complexified group. M(G,A) has the structure of a hyperkahler orbifold. We show that when G is Sp(n) or SU(n), M(G,A) has a natural hyperkahler desingularization which we exhibit as a moduli space of G_C-bundles with an altered stability condition. In this way, we obtain the two known families of…
We prove that affine invariant manifolds in strata of flat surfaces are algebraic varieties. The result is deduced from a generalization of a theorem of Möller. Namely, we prove that the image of a certain twisted Abel-Jacobi map lands in the torsion of a factor of the Jacobians. This statement can be viewed as a splitting of certain mixed Hodge structures.
In this paper, it is proved that the Hodge metric completion of the moduli space of polarized and marked Calabi-Yau manifolds, i.e. the Torelli space, is a complex affine manifold. As applications we prove that the period map from the Torelli space and the extended period map from its completion space, both are injective into the period domain, and that the completion space is a bounded domain of holomorphy with a complete Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we show that the period map from the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds with level $m$ structure is also injective.
We realize O'Grady's six dimensional example of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifold as a quotient of an IHS manifold of K3$^{[3]}$-type by a birational involution, thereby computing its Hodge numbers.
Let M be a hypercomplex Hermitian manifold, (M,I) the same manifold considered as a complex Hermitian with a complex structure I induced by the quaternions. The standard linear-algebraic construction produces a canonical nowhere degenerate (2,0)-form on (M,I). It is well known that M is hyperkaehler if and only if the form Ωis closed with respect to the de Rham differential. The M is called HKT (hyperkaehler with torsion) if this form is closed with respect to the Dolbeault differential (this condition is weaker. Conjecturally, all compact hypercomplex manifolds admit an HKT-metrics. We exploi…
We study restrictions on cohomology algebras of Kaehler compact manifolds, not depending on the h^{p,q} numbers or the symplectic structure. To illustrate the effectiveness of these restrictions, we give a number of examples of compact symplectic manifolds satisfying the Lefschetz property but not having the cohomology algebra of a compact Kaehler manifold. We also prove the stability of these restrictions under products.
We define the C^*-action on moduli spaces of reductive representations of fundamental groups of quasi-compact Kaehler manifolds by solving Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation. As applications in algebraic geometry we show a non-abelian Hodge (p,q)-type theorem for families of quasi-projective manifolds. We also prove that any discrete sub group of a Lie group of rank >1 that is not of Hodge type can't be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kaehler manifold.
It is known that many Calabi-Yau manifolds form a connected web. The question of whether all Calabi-Yau manifolds form a single web depends on the degree of singularity that is permitted for the varieties that connect the distinct families of smooth manifolds. If only conifolds are allowed then, since shrinking two-spheres and three-spheres to points cannot affect the fundamental group, manifolds with different fundamental groups will form disconnected webs. We examine these webs for the tip of the distribution of Calabi-Yau manifolds where the Hodge numbers (h^{11}, h^{21}) are both small. In…
In this work we use Hodge theoretic methods to study homotopy types of complex projective manifolds with arbitrary fundamental groups. The main tool we use is the \textit{schematization functor} $X \mapsto (X\otimes \mathbb{C})^{sch}$, introduced by the third author as a substitute for the rationalization functor in homotopy theory in the case of non-simply connected spaces. Our main result is the construction of a \textit{Hodge decomposition} on $(X\otimes\mathbb{C})^{sch}$. This Hodge decomposition is encoded in an action of the discrete group $\mathbb{C}^{\times δ}$ on the object $(X\otimes…
We construct Hodge filtered function spaces associated to infinite loop spaces. For Brown-Peterson cohomology, we show that the corresponding Hodge filtered spaces satisfy an analog of Wilson's unstable splitting. As a consequence, we obtain an analog of Quillen's theorem for Hodge filtered Brown-Peterson cohomology for complex manifolds.
We give an alternative computation of the Betti and Hodge numbers for manifolds of $OG6$ type using the method of Ngô Strings introduced by de Cataldo, Rapagnetta, and Saccà.
We introduce an "extended locus of Hodge classes" that also takes into account integral classes that become Hodge classes "in the limit". More precisely, given a polarized variation of integral Hodge structure of weight zero on a Zariski-open subset of a complex manifold, we construct a canonical analytic space that parametrizes limits of integral classes; the extended locus of Hodge classes is an analytic subspace that contains the usual locus of Hodge classes, but is finite and proper over the base manifold. The construction uses Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules and a small generalizati…
We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fou…
We show that special cycles generate a large part of the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces associated to orthogonal groups. We prove in particular that classes of totally geodesic submanifolds generate the cohomology groups of degree $n$ of compact congruence $p$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds "of simple type" as long as $n$ is strictly smaller than $\frac{p}{3}$. We also prove that for connected Shimura varieties associated to $\OO (p,2)$ the Hodge conjecture is true for classes of degree $< \frac{p+1}{3}$. The proof of our general theorem makes use of the recent endoscopic classificat…
After explaining the definition of pure and mixed Hodge modules on complex manifolds, we describe some of Saito's most important results and their proofs, and then discuss two simple applications of the theory.
For an arbitrary semisimple Frobenius manifold we construct Hodge integrable hierarchy of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. In the particular case of quantum cohomology the tau-function of a solution to the hierarchy generates the intersection numbers of the Gromov--Witten classes and their descendents along with the characteristic classes of Hodge bundles on the moduli spaces of stable maps. For the one-dimensional Frobenius manifold the Hodge hierarchy is a deformation of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy depending on an infinite number of parameters. Conjecturally this hierarchy is…
