Nanoscale step structures have attracted recent interest owing to their importance in both fundamental and applied research, for example in adsorption, in catalysis, and in directing nanowire growth. Here, we used a template-stripping method to obtain vicinal-like surface structures on grains of polycrystalline gold and investigated the effect of annealing temperature on the formation of these surfaces.
Chemically synthesized single-crystalline gold microplates have been attracting increasing interests because of their potential as high-quality gold films for nanotechnology. We present the growth of tens of nanometer thick and tens of micrometer large single-crystalline gold plates directly on solid substrates by solution-phase synthesis. Compared to microplates deposited on substrates from dispersion phase, substrate-grown plates exhibit significantly higher quality by avoiding severe small-particle contamination and aggregation. Substrate-grown gold plates also open new perspec-tives to stu…
Gold is widely used as the substrate material in many graphene devices, due to its superior optoelectronic properties and chemical stability. However, there has been little experimental investigation on the optical contrast of graphene films on Au substrates. Here we report accurate measurement of the optical contrast spectra of few-layer graphene flakes on bulk Au. We used a high-resolution optical microscopy with a 100x magnification objective, accurately determining the thickness of flakes as small as one micrometer in lateral size, which are highly desired in many applications. The results…
In this paper, we report our study on gold (Au) films with different thicknesses deposited on single layer graphene (SLG) as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for the characterization of rhodamine (R6G) molecules. We find that an Au film with a thickness of ~7 nm deposited on SLG is an ideal substrate for SERS, giving the strongest Raman signals for the molecules and the weakest photoluminescence (PL) background. While Au films effectively enhance both the Raman and PL signals of molecules, SLG effectively quenches the PL signals from the Au film and molecules. The former is …
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have been found an excellent substrate for noble metal particles enabled surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), thanks to their good adsorption of aromatic molecules, high thermal stability and weak Raman scattering. Faceted gold (Au) nanoparticles have been synthesized on BN nanosheets by a simple but controllable and reproducible sputtering and annealing method. The size and density of the Au particles can be controlled by sputtering time, current and annealing temperature etc. Under the same sputtering and annealing conditions, the Au parti…
Germanosilicide thin films are quite different from silicides and germanides. The germanium composition is not homogeneous, grains have a different shape, and the substrate is generally strained. This affects grain boundary grooving and favors agglomeration of germanosilicide films. Our thermodynamics model shows that the equilibrium Ge composition of germanosilicide films formed on strained substrates is inhomogeneous and these films are more likely to agglomerate than those formed on relaxed substrates, in agreement with experiments. Grain shape too can affect agglomeration: polygonal films,…
The responsive behavior of methanethiol and methylthiolate molecules on the Au(111) surface with an applied electrical potential is studied, and it is shown how the sulfur adsorption site, the S-H bond orientation and the interacting energy change with an external electric field strength. The electron charge density corresponding to an electric field minus that obtained in zero field, with zero-field optimal geometry, is calculated to explain the responsive behavior. The interacting energy for the intact methanethiol adsorption is larger than that for the dissociative one, showing that an exte…
Thin films of gold were deposited on single crystalline CaF2 substrates of (100) and (111) orientation by thermal evaporation. The resulting film structure was analyzed by means of atomic force microscopy in dependence of substrate temperature and deposition thickness. A marked substrate dependency was found. On CaF2 (100), extended and flat plateaus with diameters of several hundreds of nanometers form in a network-like arrangement for deposition thicknesses between 30 and 45 nm. On CaF2 (111), closed films of small average roughness develop at film thicknesses between 70 and 90 nm. These fil…
Strong room-temperature grain coarsening in gold films on polyimide induced by cyclic uniaxial mechanical strain is demonstrated. Detailed electron backscatter diffraction analysis revealed that, in contrast to the predictions of shear-coupled grain boundary migration model, the grain coarsening is isotropic and coarsened grains do not exhibit any specific crystallographic orientations or misorientations to the neighboring grains. It is shown that a thermodynamic model where the driving force appears due to the difference in yield stresses between the grains with different sizes provides an ad…
Grain boundary (GB) kinetics is important for many applications in 2d materials and metal thin films. To study how the substrate shape affects GB mobility and kinetics, we develop a kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulation method and an analytical model for GBs on the curved substrate by combining disconnection theory and by Foppl von Karman equations. Using sinusoidal MoS2 as an example, we can increase its GB mobility more than 50 times by changing substrate shape amplitudes and periods. We find that amplitude change GB mobility exponentially while wave vector change GB mobility linearly. The si…
Synthesis and characterization of high-quality single-crystal WSe2 films on highly-insulating substrate is presented. We demonstrate for the first time that the presence of gold nanoparticles in the basal plane of a WSe2 film can enhance its Raman scattering intensity. The experimentally observed enhancement ratio in the Raman signal correlates well with the simulated electric field intensity using a three-dimensional electromagnetic software and theoretical calculation. This work provides guidelines for the use of two-dimensional WSe2 films as a SERS substrate.
We present theoretical calculations for the absorption properties of protein-coated gold nanoparticles on graphene and graphite substrates. As the substrate is far away from nanoparticles, numerical results show that the number of protein bovine serum molecules molecules aggregating on gold surfaces can be quantitatively determined for gold nanoparticles with arbitrary size by means of the Mie theory and the absorption spectra. The presence of graphitic substrate near protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles substantially enhances the red shift of the surface plasmon resonances of the nanoparticl…
The application of graphene in electronic devices requires large scale epitaxial growth. The presence of the substrate, however, usually reduces the charge carrier mobility considerably. We show that it is possible to decouple the partially sp3-hybridized first graphitic layer formed on the Si-terminated face of silicon carbide from the substrate by gold intercalation, leading to a completely sp2-hybridized graphene layer with improved electronic properties.
We study the role of gold droplets in the initial stage of nanowire growth via the vapor liquid solid method. Apart from serving as a collections center for growth species, the gold droplets carry an additional crucial role that necessarily precedes the nanowire emergence, that is, they assist the nucleation of nanocraters with strongly faceted 111B side walls. Only once these facets become sufficiently large and regular, the gold droplets start nucleating and guiding the growth of nanowires. We show that this dual role of the gold droplets can be detected and monitored by high energy electron…
Graphene devices require electric contacts with metals, particularly with gold. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies of electron local density of states performed on mono-, bi- and tri- graphene layer deposited on metallic conductive Au/Cr/SiO2/Si substrate shows that gold substrate causes the Fermi level shift downwards which means that holes are donated by metal substrate to graphene which becomes p-type doped. These experimental results are in good accordance with recently published density function theory calculations. The estimated positions of the Dirac point show that the higher numb…
Enhanced diffusion of gold atoms into silicon substrate has been studied in Au thin films of various thicknesses (2.0, 5.3, 10.9 and 27.5 nm) deposited on Si(111) and followed by irradiation with 1.5 MeV Au2+ at a flux of 6.3x10^12 ions cm-2 s-1 and fluence up to 1x10^15 ions cm-2. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements showed the presence of gold silicide formation for the above-mentioned systems at fluence greater than equal to 1x1014 ions cm-2. The maximum depth to which the gold atoms have been diffused at a fluence of 1x10^14 ions cm-2 for the cases of 2.0, 5.3,…
The gold-assisted exfoliation is a very effective method to produce large-area ($cm^2$-scale) membranes of molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) for electronics. However, the strong $MoS_2/Au$ interaction, beneficial for the exfoliation process, has a strong impact on the vibrational and light emission properties of $MoS_2$. Here, we report an atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro-Raman ($μ-R$) and micro-Photoluminescence ($μ-PL$) investigation of $MoS_2$ with variable thickness exfoliated on Au and subsequently transferred on an $Al_2O_3/Si$ substrate. The $E_{2g}$ - $A_{1g}$ vibrational modes separa…
Despite the large number of experiments demonstrating that grains in a metallic material can grow at room temperature due to applied mechanical load, the mechanisms and the driving forces responsible for mechanically induced grain coarsening are still not understood. Here we present a systematic study of room temperature grain coarsening induced by cyclic strain in thin polymer-supported gold films. By means of detailed electron backscatter diffraction analysis we were able to capture both the growth of individual grains and the evolution of the whole microstructure on the basis of statistical…
Direct magnetization measurements of thin gold films are presented. These measurements integrate the signal from the thin film under study and the magnetic contribution of the film's interface with the substrate. The diamagnetic contribution to the signal from the bulk substrate is of the same order as the noise level. we find that thin gold films can exhibit positive magnetization. The character of their magnetic behavior is strongly substrate dependent.
At a single atom thick, it is challenging to distinguish graphene from its substrate using conventional techniques. In this paper we show that friction force microscopy (FFM) is a simple and quick technique for identifying graphene on a range of samples, from growth substrates to rough insulators. We show that FFM is particularly effective for characterising graphene grown on copper where it can correlate the graphene growth to the three-dimensional surface topography and map the crystallographic orientation of the graphene nondestructively, reproducibly and at high resolution. We expect FFM t…
In this work, we have studied theoretically the effects of gold adsorption on the Al(001) surface, using {\it ab initio} pseudo-potential method in the framework of the density functional theory. Having found the hollow sites at the Al(001) surface as the most preferred adsorption sites, we have investigated the effects of the Au adsorption with different coverages ($Θ$=0.11, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 ML) on the geometry, adsorption energy, surface dipole moment, and the work-function of the Al(001) surface. The results show that, even though the work-function of the Al substrate increases with t…
The technology problems of fabricating different, nanometers sized gold particles in the layered composites like light-sensitive chalcogenide glass/gold nanoparticles/transparent substrate or titanium/titanium oxide/gold nanoparticles were investigated in our work. Combination of ion implantation, plasma deposition with annealing processes results physical routes for creation of gold nanoparticles in the mentioned structures, which possess plasmon effects. These functionalized structures are planned to use for investigations of optical recording processes, biocompatibility of titanium implants…
The purpose of the present article is to make a model using analytical equations, based on elasticity theory of continuous media for small deformations, with the aim of completely characterizing the material in their mechanical properties as well as the principal stresses-strains of thin films. The approach differs from the standard literature which usually brings crystal symmetries or is directly concerned with crystalline materials. It is entirely possible to define and to analyze anisotropy in elastic media from first principles in thin films. Therefore, the constitutive relation between st…
Gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation currently represents a promising method to separate ultra-large (cm-scale) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers (1L) with excellent electronic and optical properties from the parent van der Waals (vdW) crystals. The strong interaction between $Au$ and chalcogen atoms is the key to achieve this nearly perfect 1L exfoliation yield. On the other hand, it may affect significantly the doping and strain of 1L TMDs in contact with Au. In this paper, we systematically investigated the morphology, strain, doping, and electrical properties of large area…
The interaction of thioglycolic acid with the Au(111) surface is investigaged, and it is found that at the low coverage the molecule lies down on the substrate. If the mercaptan-hydrogen atom is eliminated, the resulting SCH_2COOH molecule is randomly oriented on the surface. If the carboxylic acid group in the HSCH_2COOH molecule is deprotonated instead, the HSCH_2COO^ molecule lies down on the surface. However, when the mercaptan-hydrogen atom in the HSCH_2COO^- molecule is removed, the resulting SCH_2COO^- molecule rises up to a certain level on the substrate. The calculated Raman vibration…
We present SEM images of films thermally evaporated onto Anodic Aluminum Oxide substrates that are patterned with a hexagonal array of 34 and 80 nm diameter holes spaced by 100 nm. Over a range of film thicknesses, Pb and Sn films spontaneously self assemble into an array of nano-crystals in registry with the underlying hole lattice. The development of the arrays with thickness indicates that surface energies drive coalescing grains to move over the holes. Materials that wet the substrate or whose grains do not coalesce at these substrate temperatures do not form arrays. We discuss some potent…
We report on the gold assisted epitaxial growth of Ge nanostructures under ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions (\approx3\times 10-10 mbar) on clean Ge (100) surfaces. For this study, \approx2.0 nm thick Au samples were grown on the substrate surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Thermal annealing was carried out inside the UHV chamber at temperature \approx500°C and following this, well ordered gold nanostructures placed on pedestal Ge were formed. A \approx 2 nm Ge film was further deposited on the above surface while the substrate was kept at a temperature of \approx 500°C. The height of t…
In this paper we demonstrated the thermal Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) growth at 250 °C of highly homogeneous and ultra-thin ($\approx$ 3.6 nm) $Al_2O_3$ films with excellent insulating properties directly onto a monolayer (1L) $MoS_2$ membrane exfoliated on gold. Differently than in the case of 1L $MoS_2$ supported by a common insulating substrate ($Al_2O_3/Si$), a better nucleation process of the high-k film was observed on the 1L $MoS_2/Au$ system since the ALD early stages. Atomic force microscopy analyses showed a $\approx 50\%$ $Al_2O_3$ surface coverage just after 10 ALD cycles, its in…
Pairs of electrodes with nanometer separation (nano-gap) are achieved through an electromigration-induced break-junction (EIBJ) technique at room temperature. Lithographically defined gold (Au) wires are formed by e-beam evaporation over oxide coated silicon substrates silanized with (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and then subjected to electromigration at room temperature to create a nanometer scale gap between the two newly formed Au electrodes. The Si-O-Si covalent bond at the SiO$_2$ surface and the Au-sulphur (Au-S) bond at the top evaporated Au side, makes MPTMS as an efficien…
A high-throughput investigation of local epitaxy (called combinatorial substrate epitaxy) was carried out on Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ Ruddlesden-Popper thin films of six thicknesses (from 20 to 400 nm), all deposited on isostructural polycrystalline Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates. Electron backscatter diffraction revealed grain-over-grain local epitaxial growth for all films, resulting in a single orientation relationship ($OR$) for each substrate-film grain pair. Two preferred epitaxial $ORs$ accounted for more than 90 \% of all ORs on 300 different microcrystals, based on analyzing 50 grain pairs for each th…
Nanofibers functionalized by metal nanostructures and particles are exploited as effective flexible substrates for SERS analysis. Their complex three-dimensional structure may provide Raman signals enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to untextured surfaces. Understanding the origin of such improved performances is therefore very important for pushing nanofiber-based analytical technologies to their upper limit. Here we report on polymer nanofiber mats which can be exploited as substrates for enhancing the Raman spectra of adsorbed probe molecules. The increased surface area and the scatte…
We report a direct observation of segregation of gold atoms to the near surface regime due to 1.5 MeV Au2+ ion impact on isolated gold nanostructures deposited on silicon. Irradiation at fluences of 6x10^13, 1x10^14 and 5x10^14 ions cm-2 at a high beam flux of 6.3x1012 ions cm-2 s-1 show a maximum transported distance of gold atoms into the silicon substrate to be 60, 45 and 23 nm, respectively. At a lower fluence (6x1013 ions cm-2) transport has been found to be associated with the formation of gold silicide (Au5Si2). At a high fluence value of 5x10^14 ions cm-2, disassociation of gold silici…
The discovery of stable room temperature ferroelectricity in Croconic Acid, an organic ferroelectric material, with polarization values on par with those found in inorganic ferroelectric materials and highest among organic ferroelectric materials, has opened up possibilities to realize myriads of nano-electronic and spintronic devices based on organic ferroelectrics. Such possibilities require an adequate understanding of the ferroelectric properties of Croconic Acid grown on surfaces that are commonly employed in device fabrication. While several macroscopic studies on relatively larger cryst…
This paper is devoted to present the results of creation of gold nanoparticles on titanium surface. We focused on the problem how to create gold nanoparticles on the titanium surface with defined particle size and distribution, which could be interesting for several applications (e.g. providing well-defined substrates for biomedical research, etc.). To do that the sample is affected by the complex physical rout of gold nanoparticles formation: by gold ion implantation, thin Au layer deposition and thermal annealing. The effect of the technology, influence on the surface structure and its param…
Two-dimensional MoS2 is a crystalline semiconductor with high potential for numerous technologies. Research in recent years has sought to exploit the direct band gap and high carrier mobility properties of monolayer MoS2 for functional applications. To date, the production of MoS2 has remained at the research level and samples are usually synthesized in small quantities using small yield, expensive techniques. In order to realize scalable MoS2-based technology, large-area, high-quality and affordable MoS2 wafers must become available. Here we report on MoS2 films grown on 100 mm sapphire wafer…
Carbon is one of the most investigated materials and shows chaotic behavior in terms of evolving structure. Synthesizing carbon materials largely depend on the deposition technique, process parameters, condition of substrate surface and ratios of the gaseous chemistry. A variety of techniques have been employed to depositing carbon films from various gaseous mixtures to different substrate materials. In this study, carbon thin and thick films are discussed for different techniques known as hot filament chemical vapor deposition and microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition where their synthes…
Chemically derived graphene sheets were found to self-assemble onto patterned gold structures via electrostatic interactions between noncovalent functional groups on GS and gold. This afforded regular arrays of single graphene sheets on large substrates, characterized by scanning electron and Auger microscopy imaging and Raman spectroscopy. Self assembly was used for the first time to produce on-substrate and fully-suspended graphene electrical devices. Molecular coatings on the GS were removed by high current electrical annealing, which recovered the high electrical conductance and Dirac poin…
The electronic Seebeck response in a conductor involves the energy-dependent mean free path of the charge carriers and is affected by crystal structure, scattering from boundaries and defects, and strain. Previous photothermoelectric (PTE) studies have suggested that the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline metal nanowires are related to grain structure, though direct evidence linking crystal microstructure to the PTE response is difficult to elucidate. Here, we show that room temperature scanning PTE measurements are sensitive probes that can detect subtle changes in the local Seebeck…
Specific heat of polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin films on the fused quartz substrate was measured by ac-hot probe method. Phase transition temperature, excess entropy and spontaneous polarization were determined as a function of film thickness and grain size. The variation of the latter was obtained in the limits 30 - 150 nm by changing of the temperature of the substrate during sputtering while thickness of films 20 - 1100 nm was controlled by the conditions of sputtering. It was found that the relation between the thickness and grain size is important for the size effects in polycrystalline film…
We have studied the graphene/gold interface by means of density functional theory (DFT) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Weak interaction between graphene and the underlying gold surface leaves unperturbed Dirac cones in the band-structure, but they can be shifted with respect to the Fermi level of the whole system, which results in effective doping of graphene. DFT calculations revealed that the interface is extremely sensitive to the adsorption distance and to the structure of metal's surface, in particular strong variation in doping can be attributed to the specific rearrangements…
Accurate assessment of the antibacterial activity of graphene requires consideration of both the graphene fabrication method and, for supported films, the properties of the substrate. Large-area graphene films produced by chemical vapor deposition were grown directly on copper substrates or transferred on a gold substrate and their effect on the viability and proliferation of the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli were assessed. The viability and the proliferation of both bacterial species were not affected when they were grown on a gra…
Samples of Au clusters deposited by laser ablation on an amorphous-carbon substrate are investigated. After a few months storage at room temperature the initially statistically distributed clusters are found to be collected in agglomerates consisting of larger clusters embedded in an Au film typically covering areas of size 25$\times$70 nm$^2$. The Au film is determined to be probably 4 to 8 monolayers but at most 7 nm thick. Evidence is found that a number of clusters consisting of less then 50 atoms are pinned at intrusions of the substrate. These results were derived using high resolution t…
Nanoisland gold films, deposited by vacuum evaporation of gold onto Si(100) substrates, were irradiated with 1.5 MeV Au$^{2+}$ ions up to a fluence of $5\times 10^{14}$ ions cm$^{-2}$ and at incidence angles up to $60^{\circ}$ with respect to the surface normal. The sputtered particles were collected on carbon coated grids (catcher grid) during ion irradiation and were analyzed with transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The average sputtered particle size and the areal coverage are determined from transmission electron microscopy measurements, whereas the…
When Chen et al. (2015, Acta Mater. 87, 78-85) investigated the deformation behavior of oligocrystalline gold microwires with varying diameters in both uniaxial tension and torsion, contrary size effects were observed for the different load cases. In accompanying microstructural studies it was found, that the microwires of different thickness reveal distinctive differences in grain size and texture, respectively. As a consequence, a significant influence of these microstructural variations on the determined size effects was assumed. However, within the frame of their work, a direct confirmatio…
Mesocrystals are nanostructured materials consisting of individual nanocrystals having a preferred crystallographic orientation. On mesoscopic length scales, the properties of mesocrystals are strongly affected by structural heterogeneity. Here, we report the detailed structural characterization of a faceted mesocrystal grain self-assembled from 60 nm sized gold nanocubes. Using coherent X-ray diffraction imaging, we determined the structure of the mesocrystal with the resolution sufficient to resolve each gold nanoparticle. The reconstructed electron density of the gold mesocrystal reveals it…
Recently high density (HD) nonmagnetic (NM) cobalt has been discovered in a cobalt thin film, grown on Si(111). This cobalt film had a natural cobalt oxide at the top. The oxide layer forms when the film is taken out of the electron-beam deposition chamber and exposed to air. Thin HD NM cobalt layers were found near the cobalt/silicon and the cobalt-oxide/cobalt interfaces, while the thicker mid-depth region of the film was hcp cobalt with normal density and normal magnetic moment. If an ultrathin film of gold is grown on the cobalt layer, before exposing it to air, the oxidation of the cobalt…
The influence of a patterned substrate on obliquely deposited, exchange biased Co/CoO films was studied. It was found that substrates decorated with nanoparticle patterns provide the option to manipulate the orientation of the magnetic easy axis in obliquely deposited thin films. The complementary methods of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry were used to disentangle the different contributions to the magnetic hysteresis of such complex magnetic systems.
Near-field mapping has been widely used to study hyperbolic phonon-polaritons in van der Waals crystals. However, an accurate measurement of the polaritonic loss remains challenging because of the inherent complexity of the near-field signal and the substrate-mediated loss. Here we demonstrate that large-area monocrystalline gold flakes, an atomically-flat low-loss substrate for image polaritons, provide a platform for precise near-field measurement of the complex propagation constant of polaritons in van der Waals crystals. As a topical example, we measure propagation loss of the image phonon…
Monolithic integration of III-V optoelectronic devices with materials for various functionalities inexpensively is always desirable. Polysilicon (poly-Si) is an ideal platform because it is dopable and semi-conducting and can be deposited and patterned easily on a wide range of low cost substrates. However, the lack of crystalline coherency in poly-Si poses an immense challenge for high-quality epitaxial growth. In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, direct growth of micron-sized InGaAs/GaAs nanopillars on polysilicon. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the micron-sized pil…
