Chemically derived graphene sheets were found to self-assemble onto patterned gold structures via electrostatic interactions between noncovalent functional groups on GS and gold. This afforded regular arrays of single graphene sheets on large substrates, characterized by scanning electron and Auger microscopy imaging and Raman spectroscopy. Self assembly was used for the first time to produce on-substrate and fully-suspended graphene electrical devices. Molecular coatings on the GS were removed by high current electrical annealing, which recovered the high electrical conductance and Dirac point of the GS. Molecular sensors for highly sensitive gas detections are demonstrated with self-assembled GS devices.
Graphene is an intriguing material with properties that are distinct from those of other graphitic systems. The first samples of pristine graphene were obtained by peeling off and epitaxial growth. Recently, the chemical reduction of graphite oxide was used to produce covalently functionalized single-layer graphene oxide. However, chemical approaches for the large-scale production of highly conducting graphene sheets remain elusive. Here, we report that the exfoliation-reintercalation-expansion of graphite can produce high-quality single-layer graphene sheets stably suspended in organic solven…
In this work, fundamental results for carrier statistics in graphene 2-dimensional sheets and nanoscale ribbons are derived. Though the behavior of intrinsic carrier densities in 2d graphene sheets is found to differ drastically from traditional semiconductors, very narrow (sub-10 nm) ribbons are found to be similar to traditional narrow-gap semiconductors. The quantum capacitance, an important parameter in the electrostatic design of devices, is derived for both 2d graphene sheets and nanoribbons.
Graphene based sheets have stimulated great interest due to their superior mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. A general visualization method that allows quick observation of these single atomic layers would be highly desirable as it can greatly facilitate sample evaluation and manipulation, and provide immediate feedback to improve synthesis and processing strategies. Here we report that graphene based sheets can be made highly visible under a fluorescence microscope by quenching the emission from a dye coating, which can be conveniently removed afterwards by rinsing without disrup…
We have investigated the effect of ambient gas pressure (Argon) used during thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide on the number of graphene sheets in the resulting graphene. The ambience gas Ar pressures used are 80, 25, 1 atmosphere and 10-3 as well as 10-5 torr. We have found curious result that the number of graphene sheets in exfoliated graphene stack is dependent on the applied pressure for exfoliation of graphite oxide (GO). By lowering the exfoliation pressure, the numbers of sheets get reduced. The numbers of sheets in exfoliated graphene stack have been determined by Lorentzian fit of…
Strain induced band gap deformations of hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene and hexagonal BN sheet have been investigated using first principles density functional calculations. Within harmonic approximation, the deformation is found to be higher for hydrogenated systems than for the fluorinated systems. Interestingly, our calculated band gap deformation for hydrogenated/fluorinated graphene and BN sheets are positive, while those for pristine graphene and BN sheet are found to be negative. This is due to the strong overlap between nearest neighbor π orbitals in the pristine sheets, that is abse…
Basing on the molecular theory of graphene, the influence of the chemical modification of edge atoms of a graphene sheet is studied in terms of mechanochemical reactions. The mechanical behavior of graphene is shown to be not only highly anisotropic with respect to the direction of the load application, but greatly dependent on the chemical modification of the edges as well. A topological character of the graphene deformation is discussed.
A plethora of different morphologies are fabricated by the self assembly of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) exfoliated flakes with the help of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique at the liquid/air interface. The MoS2 flakes are chemically exfoliated in various solvents but their stable sheet like assembly on substrate is achieved only in case of the flakes exfoliated in dimethylformamide. The density of the monolayer sheets is finely controlled by the surface pressure while the stabilization of MoS2 LB film onto the water subphase results in its self assembly into diffusion limited cluster aggregate…
Large area graphene sheets grown by chemical vapor deposition can potentially be employed as a transparent electrode in photovoltaics if their sheet resistance can be significantly lowered, without any loss in transparency. Here, we report the fabrication of a graphene-conducting-carbon-nanotube (CCNT) hybrid material with a sheet resistance considerably lower than neat graphene, and with the requisite small reduction in transparency. Graphene is deposited on top of a a self-assembled CCNT monolayer which creates parallel conducting paths on the graphene surface. The hybrid thereby circumvents…
To clarify the yielding mechanism of small hydrocarbon molecules in chemical sputtering between hydrogen and graphene sheets, we made classical molecular dynamics simulation with modified Brenner's REBO potential which we proposed to deal with chemical reaction. As the simulation model, we prepared more realistic physical system, which is composed of 160 incident hydrogen atoms and ten graphene multilayers, than our previous model. From the present work, we found the following fact: breaking the covalent bonds between carbon atoms by hydrogen does not play an important role during destruction …
Using ab initio methods, we propose a simple and effective way to substitutionally dope graphene sheets with Boron. The method consists of selectively exposing each side of the graphene sheet to different elements. We first expose one side of the membrane to Boron, while the other side is exposed to Nitrogen. Proceeding this way, the B atoms will be spontaneously incorporated into the graphene membrane, without any activation barrier. In a second step, the system should be exposed to a H-rich environment, that will remove the CN radical from the layer and form HCN, leading to a perfect substit…
DFT calculation of various atomic species on graphene sheet is investigated as prototypes for formation of nano-structures on carbon nanotube (CNT) wall. We investigate computationally adsorption energies and adsorption sites on graphene sheet for a lot of atomic species including transition metals, noble metals, nitrogen and oxygen, using the DFT calculation as a prototype for CNT. The suitable atomic species can be chosen as each application from those results. The calculated results show us that Mo and Ru are bounded strongly on graphene sheet with large diffusion barrier energy. On the oth…
Graphene has attracted much attention due to its interesting properties and potential applications. Chemical exfoliation methods have been developed to make graphene recently, aimed at large-scale assembly and applications such as composites and Li ion batteries. Although efficient, the chemical exfoliation methods involve oxidation of graphene and introduce defects in the as-made sheets. Hydrazine reduction at 100 has shown to partially restore the structure and conductance of graphite oxide. However, the reduced GO still shows strong defect peaks in Raman spectra with higher resistivity than…
We have performed an {\it ab initio} theoretical investigation of graphene sheet adsorbed on amorphous SiO$_2$ surface (G/a-SiO$_2$). We find that graphene adsorbs on the a-SiO$_2$ surface through van der Waals interactions. The inhomogeneous topology of the a-SiO$_2$ clean surface promotes a total charge density displacement on the adsorbed graphene sheet, giving rise to electron-rich as well as hole-rich regions on the graphene. Such anisotropic distribution of the charge density may contribute to the reduction of the electronic mobility in G/a-SiO$_2$ systems. Furthermore, the adsorbed grap…
Direct growth of flat micrometer-sized bilayer graphene islands in between molybdenum disulfide sheets is achieved by chemical vapor deposition of ethylene at about 800 °C. The temperature assisted decomposition of ethylene takes place mainly at molybdenum disulfide step edges. The carbon atoms intercalate at this high temperature, and during the deposition process, through defects of the molybdenum disulfide surface such as steps and wrinkles. Post growth atomic force microscopy images reveal that circular flat graphene islands have grown at a high yield. They consist of two graphene layers s…
We have used Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) and Photo Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) to study and improve the quality of graphene films grown on Ir(111) using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CVD at elevated temperature already yields graphene sheets that are uniform and of monatomic thickness. Besides domains that are aligned with respect to the substrate, other rotational variants grow. Cyclic growth exploiting the faster growth and etch rates of the rotational variants, yields films that are 99 % composed of aligned domains. Precovering the substrate with a high density of graph…
We performed a first principles investigation on the structural and electronic properties of group-IV (C, SiC, Si, Ge, and Sn) graphene-like sheets in flat and buckled configurations and the respective hydrogenated or fluorinated graphane-like ones. The analysis on the energetics, associated with the formation of those structures, showed that fluorinated graphane-like sheets are very stable, and should be easily synthesized in laboratory. We also studied the changes on the properties of the graphene-like sheets, as result of hydrogenation or fluorination. The interatomic distances in those gra…
It is shown that lines of adsorbed hydrogen pair atoms divide the graphene sheet into strips and form hydrogen-based superlattice structures (2HG-SL). We show that the forming of 2HG-SL drastically changes the electronic properties of graphene from semimetal to semiconductor. The electronic spectra of "zigzag" (n,0) 2HG-SL is similar to that of (n,0) carbon nanotubes and have a similar oscillation of band gap with number n, but with non-zero minimal values. The composite dual-periodic (n,0)+(m,0) 2HG-SLs of "zigzag" strips are analyzed, with the conclusion that they may be treated as quasi-two…
In this work, linear polystyrene-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) and heteroarm star PS_22P2VP_22 ionizable block copolymers were used as dispersing agents for the liquid-phase exfoliation of pristine graphene. Various strategies such as direct exfoliation, film hydration and phase transfer have been employed and compared. The best strategy involved a two-step process, namely, pre-exfoliation of graphite in polymer/CHCl3 solutions followed by phase transfer to acidified water. High concentrations of stable aqueous suspensions of graphene flakes, highly enriched in monolayer structures, were t…
The electronic and structural properties of (i) boron doped graphene sheets, and (ii) the chemisorption processes of hydrogen adatoms on the boron doped graphene sheets have been examined by {\it ab initio} total energy calculations.
A cheap and flexible method is introduced that enables the epitaxial growth of bilayer graphene on Pt(111) by sequential chemical vapour deposition. Extended regions of two stacked graphene sheets are obtained by, first, the thermal decomposition of ethylene and the subsequent formation of graphene. In the second step, a sufficiently thick Pt film buries the first graphene layer and acts as a platform for the fabrication of the second graphene layer in the third step. A final annealing process then leads to the diffusion of the first graphene sheet to the surface until the bilayer stacking wit…
First principles calculations based on density functional theory reveal some unusual properties of BN sheet functionalized with hydrogen and fluorine. These properties differ from those of similarly functionalized graphene even though both share the same honeycomb structure. (1) Unlike graphene which undergoes a metal to insulator transition when fully hydrogenated, the band gap of the BN sheet significantly narrows when fully saturated with hydrogen. Furthermore, the band gap of the BN sheet can be tuned from 4.7 eV to 0.6 eV and the system can be a direct or an indirect semiconductor or even…
The amount of rippling in graphene sheets is related to the interactions with the substrate or with the suspending structure. Here, we report on an irreversibility in the response to forces that act on suspended graphene sheets. This may explain why one always observes a ripple structure on suspended graphene. We show that a compression-relaxation mechanism produces static ripples on graphene sheets and determine a peculiar temperature $T_c$, such that for $T<T_c$ the free-energy of the rippled graphene is smaller than that of roughened graphene. We also show that $T_c$ depends on the structur…
We employ scanning probe microscopy to reveal atomic structures and nanoscale morphology of graphene-based electronic devices (i.e. a graphene sheet supported by an insulating silicon dioxide substrate) for the first time. Atomic resolution STM images reveal the presence of a strong spatially dependent perturbation, which breaks the hexagonal lattice symmetry of the graphitic lattice. Structural corrugations of the graphene sheet partially conform to the underlying silicon oxide substrate. These effects are obscured or modified on graphene devices processed with normal lithographic methods, as…
Ever since the discovery of graphene and subsequent explosion of interest in single atom thick materials, studying their mechanical properties has been an active area of research. New length scales often necessitate a rethinking of physical laws, making such studies crucial for understanding and ultimately utilizing novel material properties. Here we report on the investigation of nanoscale periodic ripples in suspended, single layer graphene sheets by scanning tunneling microscopy and atomistic scale simulations. Unlike the sinusoidal ripples found in classical fabrics, we find that graphene …
We demonstrate high-resolution modification of suspended multi-layer graphene sheets by controlled exposure to the focused electron beam of a transmission electron microscope. We show that this technique can be used to realize, on timescales of a few seconds, a variety of features, including nanometer-scale pores, slits, and gaps that are stable and do not evolve over time. Despite the extreme thinness of the suspended graphene sheets, extensive removal of material to produce the desired feature geometries is found to not introduce long-range distortion of the suspended sheet structure.
We present ab initio calculations for single-atom vacancies in graphene. In agreement with earlier work, we find that vacancies are responsible for the magnetism recently observed experimentally, creating a center with net spin. For small supercells, there is a strong symmetry breaking in the supercell with respect to the perfect graphene structure, and this symmetry breaking is much smaller for larger supercells. The influence of the adsorption of H, O and N atoms on the spin center of the bare single-atom vacancy and its influence on the magnetism induced in these samples is investigated. A …
Carbon nanostructures are promising ballistic protection materials, due to their low density and excellent mechanical properties. Recent experimental and computational investigations on the behavior of graphene under impact conditions revealed exceptional energy absorption properties as well. However, the reported numerical and experimental values differ by an order of magnitude. In this work, we combined numerical and analytical modeling to address this issue. In the numerical part, we employed reactive molecular dynamics to carry out ballistic tests on single and double-layered graphene shee…
Compressed hydrogen passes through a series of layered structures in which the layers can be viewed as distorted graphene sheets. The electronic structures of these layered structures can be understood by studying simple model systems- an ideal single hydrogen graphene sheet and three-dimensional model lattices consisting of such sheets. The energetically stable structures result from structural distortions of model graphene-based systems due to electronic instabilities towards Peierls or other distortions associated with the opening of a band gap. Two factors play crucial roles in the metalli…
The formation of atomic nanoclusters on suspended graphene sheets have been investigated by employing a Molecular dynamics simulation at finite temperature. Our systematic study is based on temperature dependent Molecular dynamics simulations of some transition and alkali atoms on suspended graphene sheets. We find that the transition atoms aggregate and make various size nanoclusters distributed randomly on graphene surface. We also report that most alkali atoms make one atomic layer on graphene sheets. Interestingly, the potassium atoms almost deposit regularly on the surface at low temperat…
Following the successful utilization of LiFePO4 as a novel cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries, interest and efforts have grown in the research of another olivine structured material LiMnPO4 due to its higher operating potential voltage and energy density. However, high rate performance for LiMnPO4-based cathode materials has been challenging due to its extremely low electrical and ionic conductivities. Here, we develop a synthesis of Fe-doped LiMnPO4 (LiMn0.75Fe0.25PO4) nanorods directly bonded on graphene sheets (reduced from graphene oxide) to render LiMn0.75Fe0.25PO4 nanoro…
We have computationally investigated absorption spectra of a specifically configured set of graphene-based molecules involving (1) a sp2 bare graphene sheet; (2) framed graphene sheets containing different chemical addends terminating dangling bonds of edge atoms but keeping sp2 configured basal plane; and (3) bulk sp3 graphene sheets resulted from the chemical modification occurred at not only the bare sheet circumference but at its basal plane as well. Framed molecules, open-shell by nature, present different kinds of reduced graphene oxides and present the main building blocks of graphene q…
The cyanides $M$CN, $M$=Cu, Ag, Au, have experimentally a structure with hexagonally packed, infinite -$M$-CN-$M$-CN- chains. Following our earlier study for AuCN, we now predict that all three $M$CN could have an alternative $M_3$C$_3$N$_3$ sheet structure of comparable energy with the known one. The valence isoelectronic systems $M$C$_2$ versus $M_3$C$_6$, $M$=Be-Ba; Zn-Hg are also studied. Now, the known dicarbides have the CaC$_2$ or MgC$_2$ chain structures. The predicted sheets lie energetically below the chains for $M$ = Zn, Cd, and Hg. All these systems are experimentally unknown. Inde…
Intrinsic layered structure of graphite is the source of ongoing and expanding search of ways of obtaining low-cost and promising graphite thin layers. We report on a novel method of obtaining and separating rubbed graphite sheets by using water soluble NaCl substrate. The electrical behavior of sheets was characterized by current-voltage measurements. An in-plane electrical unisotropy depending on rubbing direction is discovered. Optical microscopy observations combined with discovered non-linear electrical behavior revealed that friction leads to the formation of sheet makeup which contain a…
We formulate a nonlinear continuum model of a graphene sheet supported by a flat rigid substrate. The sheet is parallel to the substrate and loaded on a pair of opposite edges. A typical cross-section of the sheet is modeled as an elastica. We use elementary techniques from bifurcation theory to investigate how the buckling of the sheet depends on the boundary conditions, the composition of the substrate, and the length of the sheet. We also present numerical results that illustrate snap-buckling of the sheet.
We study a suspended graphene sheet subject to the electric field of a gate underneath. We compute the elastic deformation of the sheet and the corresponding effective gauge field, which modifies the electronic transport. In a clean system the two-terminal conductance of the sample is reduced below the ballistic limit and is almost totally suppressed at low carrier concentrations in samples under tension. Residual disorder restores a small finite conductivity.
We have carried out first-principles calculations on electronic properties of graphene quantum dots embedded in hexagonal boron nitride monolayer sheets. The calculations with density functional theory show that the band gaps of quantum dots are determined by the quantum confinement effects and the hybridization of π orbitals from B, N and C atoms. The energy states near the Fermi level are found to be strongly localized within and in the vicinity of the quantum dots.
We demonstrate that a monolayer graphene membrane is impermeable to standard gases including helium. By applying a pressure difference across the membrane, we measure both the elastic constants and the mass of a single layer of graphene. This pressurized graphene membrane is the world's thinnest balloon and provides a unique separation barrier between 2 distinct regions that is only one atom thick.
The light-like dispersion of graphene monolayer results in many novel electronic properties in it1, however, this gapless feature also limits the applications of graphene monolayer in digital electronics2. A rare working solution to generate a moderate bandgap in graphene monolayer is to cut it into one-dimensional (1D) nanometre-wide ribbons3-13. Here we show that a wide bandgap can be created in a unique 1D strained structure, i.e., graphene-nanoribbon-like (GNR-like) structure, of a continuous graphene sheet via strong interaction between graphene and the metal substrate, instead of cutting…
We consider the effect of atomic hydrogen exposure to a system of two undoped sheets of graphene grown near a silica surface (the first adsorbed to the surface and the second freestanding near the surface). In the absence of atomic hydrogen the van der Waals force between the sheets is attractive at all separations causing the sheets to come closer together. However, with addition of atomic hydrogen between the sheets the long range van der Waals interaction turns repulsive at a critical concentration. The underlying triple layer structure (SiO2 -Atomic Hydrogen Gas -Air) gives rise to a long …
Periodically corrugated epitaxial graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on metallic substrates are considered as perspective templates for the self-assembly of nanoparticles arrays. By using first-principles calculations, we determine binding energies and diffusion activation barriers of metal adatoms on graphene and h-BN. The observed chemical trends can be understood in terms of the interplay between charge transfer and covalent bonding involving the adatom d electrons. We further investigate the electronic effects of the metallic substrate and find that periodically corrugated templat…
The interlayer gallery between two adjacent sheets of van der Waals materials is expected to modify properties of atoms and molecules confined at the atomic interfaces. Here, we directly image individual hydrogen atom intercalated between two graphene sheets and investigate its dynamics by scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The intercalated hydrogen atom is found to be remarkably different from atomic hydrogen chemisorbed on external surface of graphene. Our STM measurements, complemented by first-principles calculations, show that the hydrogen atom intercalated between two graphene sheets …
A simple optical method is presented for identifying and measuring the effective optical properties of nanometer-thick, graphene-based materials, based on the use of substrates consisting of a thin dielectric layer on silicon. High contrast between the graphene-based materials and the substrate is obtained by choosing appropriate optical properties and thickness of the dielectric layer. The effective refractive index and optical absorption coefficient of graphene oxide, thermally reduced graphene oxide, and graphene are obtained by comparing the predicted and measured contrasts.
Optical extinction and absorption enhancement in the infrared range of a monolayer graphene sheet by patterning split ring resonators (SRRs) is studied. It is found that the electric mode is stronger in enhancing infrared extinction and absorption compared to the magnetic mode and other higher-order modes. We improve the infrared extinction of the SRR graphene sheet by increasing the graphene area ratio in the SRR unit cell design. With the increase of the graphene area ratio, the radiation ability of the electric dipolar mode and dissipation of graphene compete for a maximum infrared absorpti…
A model is proposed to study the electronic structure of slightly curved graphene sheets with an arbitrary number of pentagon-heptagon pairs and Stone-Wales defects based on a cosmological analogy. The disorder induced by curvature produces characteristic patterns in the local density of states that can be observed in scanning tunnel and transmission electron microscopy.
We demonstrate how self-assembled monolayers of aromatic molecules on copper substrates can be converted into high-quality single-layer graphene using low-energy electron irradiation and subsequent annealing. We characterize this two-dimensional solid state transformation on the atomic scale and study the physical and chemical properties of the formed graphene sheets by complementary microscopic and spectroscopic techniques and by electrical transport measurements. As substrates we successfully use Cu(111) single crystals and the technologically relevant polycrystalline copper foils.
Liquid phase exfoliation followed by Langmuir-Blodgett self-assembly (LBSA) is a promising method for scalable production of thin graphene films for transparent conductor applications. However, monolayer assembly into thin films often induces a high density of defects, resulting in a large sheet resistance that hinders practical use. We introduce UV/ozone as a novel photochemical treatment that reduces sheet resistance of LBSA graphene threefold, while preserving the high optical transparency. The effect of such treatment on our films is opposite to the effect it has on mechanically exfoliated…
We calculate core-level spectra for pristine and doped free-standing graphene sheets. Instructions for how to perform the calculations are given in detail. Although pristine graphene is not metallic the core-level spectrum presents low-energy tailing which is characteristic of metallic systems. The peak shapes vary with doping level in a characteristic way. The spectra are compared to experiments and show good agreement. We compare to two different pristine samples and to one doped sample. The pristine samples are one with quasi-free-standing epitaxial graphene on SiC obtained by hydrogen inte…
The viscosity of Graphene nano-sheet suspensions (GNS)and its behavior with temperature and concentration have been experimentally determined. A physical mechanism for the enhanced viscosity over the base fluids has been proposed for the poly-dispersed GNSs. Experimental data reveals that enhancement of viscosity for GNSs lie in between that of Carbon Nanotube Suspensions (CNTSs) and nano Alumina suspensions (nAS) , indicating the hybrid mechanism of percolation (like CNTs) and Brownian motion assisted sheet dynamics (like Alumina particles). Sheet dynamics and percolation, along with a propos…
At low energies, electrons in doped graphene sheets are described by a massless Dirac fermion Hamiltonian. In this work we present a semi-analytical expression for the dynamical density-density linear-response function of noninteracting massless Dirac fermions (the so-called "Lindhard" function) at finite temperature. This result is crucial to describe finite-temperature screening of interacting massless Dirac fermions within the Random Phase Approximation. In particular, we use it to make quantitative predictions for the specific heat and the compressibility of doped graphene sheets. We find …
The effect of vacancies on the robustness of zero-energy edge electronic states in zigzag-type graphene layer is studied at different concentrations and distributions of defects. All calculations are performed by using the Green's function method and the tight-binding approximation. It is found that the arrangement of defects plays a crucial role in the destruction of the edge states. We have specified a critical distance between edge vacancies when their mutual influence becomes significant and affects markedly the density of electronic states at graphene edge.
A continuum, post-deposition mesoscopic model of a Moiré-regulated self-assembly of metal nanoclusters on a twisted bilayer graphene is presented. Quasi-two-dimensional nanocluster-like steady states at a low adsorbate coverage are analytically determined for Pt, Ni, and Pb adsorbates, pointing that nanoclusters self-assemble at the Moiré cells centers. This is followed by the computations of nanoclusters self-assembly dynamics. Differences in the self-assembly efficiency for three chosen metals are highlighted across three typical values of an initial submonolayer coverage and for three tempe…
We have imaged a freestanding graphene sheet of 210 nm in diameter with 2 Angstrom resolution by combining coherent diffraction and holography with low-energy electrons. The entire sheet is reconstructed from just a single diffraction pattern displaying the arrangement of 660.000 individual graphene unit cells at once. Given the fact that electrons with kinetic energies of the order of 100 eV do not damage biological molecules, it will now be a matter to develop methods for depositing individual proteins onto such graphene sheets.
Thermal conduction in polymer nanocomposites depends on several parameters including the thermal conductivity and geometrical features of the nanoparticles, the particle loading, their degree of dispersion and formation of a percolating networks. To enhance efficiency of thermal contact between free-standing conductive nanoparticles were previously proposed. This work report for the first time the investigation of molecular junctions within a graphene polymer nanocomposite. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal transport efficiency of molecular junctions in p…
Superconductivity in graphite intercalated compounds has been studied for more than 40 years and it is still not fully understood, despite the recent progress and the discovery of relatively high Tc superconductivity in CaC6 and YbC6. Recent studies now suggest that the electron-phonon coupling is most likely responsible for pairing and that the intercalant-derived electronic states and vibrations play the dominant role. Here, we present the first studies of electronic structure in CaC6, a superconductor with Tc=11.6 K. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that, contrary to…
We report on suspended single-layer graphene deposition by a transfer-printing approach based on polydimethylsiloxane stamps. The transfer printing method allows the exfoliation of graphite flakes from a bulk graphite sample and their residue-free deposition on a silicon dioxide substrate. This deposition system creates a blistered graphene surface due to strain induced by the transfer process itself. Single-layer-graphene deposition and its "blistering" on the substrate are demonstrated by a combination of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic-force microscopy measuremen…
In this work, the tridiagonal method is used to distinguish between edges modes and area modes to study the edge sites properties effect on edge localized states of semi-infinite zigzag 2D honeycomb graphene sheet. The results show a realistic behavior for the dependance of edge localized states of zigzag graphene on the edge sites properties which explaining the experimental results of measured local density of states at the edge of graphene, while at the same time removing the inconsistence between the semiconductor behavior found in the experimental data for fabricated GNRs and the expected…
We have measured the impact of atomic hydrogen adsorption on the electronic transport properties of graphene sheets as a function of hydrogen coverage and initial, pre-hydrogenation field-effect mobility. Our results are compatible with hydrogen adsorbates inducing intervalley mixing by exerting a short-range scattering potential. The saturation coverages for different devices are found to be proportional to their initial mobility, indicating that the number of native scatterers is proportional to the saturation coverage of hydrogen. By extrapolating this proportionality, we show that the fiel…
We present numerical calculations of the impact of charge carriers-carriers interactions on the dynamical properties of quasiparticles such as renormalized velocity and quasiparticle inelastic scattering lifetime in a gapped graphene sheet. Our formalism is based on the many-body $G_0W$-approximation for the self-energy. We present results for the many-body renormalized velocity suppression and the renormalization constant over a broad range of energy gap values. We find that the renormalized velocity is almost independence of the carrier densities at large density regime. We also show that th…
An important tool in the field of metamaterials is the extraction of effective material parameters from simulated or measured scattering parameters of a sample. Here we discuss a retrieval method for thin-film structures that can be approximated by a two-dimensional scattering sheet. We determine the effective sheet conductivity from the scattering parameters and we point out the importance of the magnetic sheet current to avoid an overdetermined inversion problem. Subsequently, we present two applications of the sheet retrieval method. First, we determine the effective sheet conductivity of t…
